IP and Music: A Rhythmic Celebration of Innovation
North-West University (NWU) is tuning into a global conversation with its World Intellectual Property (IP) Day Celebration happening on Friday, 9 May 2025, from 12:00 to 13:00. The event will be held at the NWU Potchefstroom Amphitheatre and brings together music and law in a uniquely engaging way.
This year’s global theme, “IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP,” spotlights how IP rights back the music industry—giving songwriters, performers, and composers the legal fuel to keep creating and thriving. It's not all abstract law talk, though. Expect something a little more upbeat.
A Line-Up That Blends Beats with Brainpower
The speakers lined up for this hour-long celebration bring perspectives from the stage, the studio, and the lecture hall:
Ms Bonolo Bliz – NWU alumna and Afro House artist, representing the rhythm side of rights.
Mr Christiaan Steyn – Founder and MD of STEYN IP, likely to drop a few truth bombs about navigating IP in the industry.
Prof Janelize Morelli – Associate Professor at the NWU School of Music, who knows a thing or two about how IP shapes the academic and creative side of music.
It’s a short but sweet event, and judging by the mix of speakers, there’ll be more than just legalese in the air. Expect live music, lively conversations, and perhaps some unexpected gems on how creativity meets copyright.

Whether you're in it for the music, the law, or just trying to look like you understand both, this event is one way to spend a Friday lunch hour not stuck behind a desk. And who knows—you might just leave knowing how your favourite amapiano banger is legally protected.
So go on, feel the beat of IP.
