Friends of Ferdies is an independent platform that identifies current, real needs at the school and then helps meet them through targeted, achievable two-month projects. The initiative is deeply learner-focused. It’s about removing barriers, creating opportunities, and adding value where it matters most, whether through academics, sport, infrastructure, or emotional well-being. One Project at a Time, With Purpose What makes this project different is its clear and focused approach: They look at what is most important right now, and they strive to complete that project fully before moving on to the next. This ensures real, visible impact, not just ideas or promises. Whether it's a new training facility, a safer environment, or upgraded cultural spaces, every project is realistic, goal-driven, and fully completed before starting the next. Transparency & Feedback Supporters are always kept in the loop. They receive updates on how their donations are used, and how the outcomes benefit the learners and the school. This openness builds trust and has already led to more and more individuals and companies reaching out on their own, asking how they can get involved. Anyone Can Be a Friend of Ferdies You don’t have to be a former student to help. This is open to everyone, parents, community members, former staff, local business owners, and even people who simply drive past the school every day and want to make a difference. What began as a dream is now an innovative web-based platform that helps service-based entrepreneurs and skilled workers find opportunities in a secure and affordable way. A Journey Rooted in Community Originally from Rustenburg, Dube found himself in Potchefstroom during his student years and never left. Something about the town, he says, just kept him there. Over time, Potchefstroom became the foundation for his entrepreneurial journey. JulukaWorx officially began two years ago, but it took time and effort to turn the concept into a working digital tool. Dube describes a process filled with trial and error, countless app versions, and lessons learned from mistakes that shaped the platform into what it is today. What Is JulukaWorx? At its core, JulukaWorx is a web-based app designed for artisans, service providers, and laborers, everyone from electricians, bakers, and plumbers to hairstylists and farm workers. It creates a digital bridge between skilled individuals and people who need their services. The goal is to replace outdated and often ineffective job-hunting methods, like standing on street corners or printing out endless CVs, with a mobile-friendly platform that makes connecting easier, safer, and more direct. Keeping It Simple, Safe and Smart A standout feature of JulukaWorx is its accessibility. It’s web-based, meaning it doesn’t take up much space on a phone. This was a deliberate decision, considering many users don’t have the latest smartphones or lots of storage. Instead, users can access the platform from their phones, public libraries, internet cafés, or any free Wi-Fi zone. Privacy and security are also top priorities. User contact details are hidden by default, with all communication taking place inside a built-in messaging system. This minimizes the risk of exploitation, scams, or unsafe interactions, especially important in areas where personal safety can’t be taken for granted. Solving a Real Problem The platform isn’t just a business idea, it’s a social solution. Dube explains that the North West province consistently has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. Many skilled individuals don’t know where to look for work, while potential employers don’t know where to find reliable workers. JulukaWorx addresses this disconnect by allowing users to set their preferred working radius, for example, only seeing jobs or clients within 20 km, and providing a rating system that builds trust and reputation over time. “Whether you’re a barista, a builder, or a beautician, JulukaWorx helps you find your next opportunity without wasting time or taxi fare.” For Workers and Employers Alike JulukaWorx is designed with two user types in mind: • Service Providers register with details about their skills, work radius, and availability. • Employers browse service providers, send private requests, and communicate securely within the platform. Instead of endlessly applying or hunting for gigs, service providers receive direct notifications from people who genuinely need their services. This reduces stress and saves valuable time for both sides. A Platform That Grows with You The cost of access is intentionally low: R120 per year, or R100 for early users signing up on 1 May, aligning with Workers’ Day. This ensures that the platform remains open and affordable for individuals from all income levels. Behind the scenes, a passionate team of seven (plus a dedicated marketing lead) continues to work on improving and promoting the platform. Each of them still holds a 9-to-5 job, but their shared belief in JulukaWorx keeps them committed. “We don’t want to sell user data or flood the platform with irrelevant content. We’re building something that people actually need and that they can trust.” Built in Potch, Designed for the World Although JulukaWorx is being launched in Potchefstroom, the platform is built to work anywhere. Its scalable structure means that service providers from any location can eventually join, making this a truly inclusive tool with potential to expand far beyond the local community. The first rollout focuses on Potch, with the town serving as a perfect test environment, a blend of rural villages, students, and working professionals. How to Join JulukaWorx From 1 May, users will be able to register on the JulukaWorx website for just R100 (launch offer), with full access to the app for one year. After that, the regular annual fee will be R120. Born in 1885, he made his Springbok debut in 1921, playing against the All Blacks. He also took part in the 1924 tour to Britain. Not only was he a pioneer, but he also had a rich sporting pedigree. He attended St. Andrew’s College and played rugby while studying in London. His legacy laid the groundwork for future generations of Dorp players to believe in their potential. Johan Claassen: The Towering Leader Johan Claassen remains one of the most iconic names associated with Potchefstroom Dorp Rugbyklub. In 1952, he moved from Sannieshof to Potchefstroom and immediately became a fixture in the Dorp team. He not only represented the club, but went on to captain Wes-Transvaal, Northern Transvaal, and eventually, the Springboks. The conversation takes viewers deep into the villages of Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique, places where modern comforts are few, but the spiritual hunger is immense. Into the Heart of Africa Pastor Ruaan describes his travels not as mere missions, but as heartfelt partnerships with local pastors and forgotten communities. Starting in 2019, his mission work has grown to include multiple visits per year. In these rural areas, basic resources are scarce, roads are nearly impassable, and in many places, the sight of a white visitor is still unfamiliar. Yet, in these very settings, Pastor Ruaan has witnessed some of the most profound encounters with God’s presence. “It’s not a performance. It’s not about comfort. It’s about meeting people exactly where they are—and showing them they are seen and loved.” Church Under Trees, Worship Without Walls One of the most touching parts of the episode is hearing how churches in remote areas are often nothing more than tree branches tied together and covered with grass. And yet, the worship is alive. Ruaan speaks of congregations with no instruments and no sound systems, yet the Spirit is tangible. He recounts moments where people walked over 30 kilometers just to attend a service. Children cry at the unfamiliar sight of a foreigner, while adults are overwhelmed with gratitude just to be seen, prayed for, and visited. “These pastors are the true heroes. They remain when we leave. They lead, they care, and they often do it in total obscurity.” Witchcraft, Miracles & Redemption While visiting these communities, Ruaan has seen firsthand the battle between light and darkness. In one Mozambique village, a revival broke out after witch doctors had a supernatural encounter during a crusade, eventually leading them to lay down their charms and give their lives to Jesus. Today, many of those villagers are part of the local church, walking long distances every Sunday to worship together. He also shares healing testimonies: a woman sick for months, unable to find help through doctors, was completely healed after a prayer of faith. Living Among Them: Faith in Action Ruaan doesn’t stay in hotels. He sleeps in tents, cooks his own food, and bathes with bucket water, choosing to fully immerse himself in the village life. He brings not only the Word, but also clothing, school supplies, and farming support. Through donations from the Potchefstroom community and his church, they've helped establish a school for orphans, paid teachers’ salaries, and fed entire villages recovering from drought. “When you go, you're not just going to give. You're also going to be changed.” Building the Builders A key focus of the mission is to empower pastors, not just to host crusades, but to equip local leaders who remain after the teams leave. Ruaan hosts multi-day leadership retreats where pastors receive in-depth teaching, prayer, and spiritual strengthening. The results? Churches are growing. Communities are transforming.
