Underestimated And Misunderstood Hyenas are often underestimated, but they are some of the most adaptable and successful predators in the wild. Unlike the common perception that they're scavengers, Hyenas are skilled hunters. They form powerful social groups known as clans and cooperate efficiently to take down prey, often leaving no waste behind. When it comes to raising their young, Hyenas choose to live underground in dens. Underground Predators These underground chambers offer protection against other predators and provide a safe environment for the cubs to grow and learn. As we observed from a safe distance, one curious youngster couldn't resist investigating our presence. Curious Pup It cautiously approached our vehicle, eventually coming right up to our phone camera. This intimate interaction provided us with a unique opportunity to capture this curious pup's inquisitive nature. Tension In The Air We found ourselves at a dry dam, a desolate landscape framed by the silhouette of acacia trees. The tension in the air was palpable as the powerful pride of Lions had just made a successful Zebra kill. Their triumphant roars echoed through the wilderness, signaling both their dominance and their feast for the night. In The Shadows But, in the shadows, lurking on the periphery of this carnivorous drama, were the patient Hyenas. Their den site wasn't too far from the kill, and they knew that their moment would come. Hyenas are clever scavengers, masters of patience, and cunning opportunists. This was their chance to secure a meal. Irresistible Scent As the Lions feasted, a sizable group of Hyenas gathered, drawn by the irresistible scent of fresh blood and the prospect of an easy meal. They circled the scene cautiously, their eerie laughter creating an eerie soundtrack to the unfolding spectacle. The Lions were not oblivious to the presence of their competitors, and they kept a watchful eye on the Hyenas, roaring their displeasure and warning them to keep their distance. The air was charged with the essence of the wild as we traversed the landscape, we went pass a prime site during the golden hours of dawn and dusk as there was colossal Giraffe bull who had fallen victim to a fierce battle with another male. Bone - Crushing Jaws Nature's duality unfolded before us; while the Giraffe's demise saddened us, it also presented an invaluable opportunity for the scavengers of the wild. A lone Hyena, with its bone - crushing jaws, reveled in the feast provided by the Giraffe's remains. The Ribcage The ribcage became a banquet, its powerful jaws effortlessly accessing the marrow within. As the Hyena feasted, we observed the inquisitive glances of other Giraffes in the vicinity, a poignant reminder of the delicate balance and interconnectedness of life in the wilderness. "The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow"- Nelson Mandela   Met ’n aansteeklike passie vir die jeug van vandag, wil oud-Potchefstromer, Janene de Beer, seker maak die jongklomp is toegerus vir hoërskool en bied ’n insiggewende kursus aan vir voornemende graad agt leerders, waar hul die nodige ‘gereedskap’ sal ontvang om hierdie nuwe fase van hul lewe te trotseer. Foto: Verskaf Toe sy in 2006 as eerstejaar aan die NWU se Potchefstroom Kampus kom studeer het, het dié dorpie dadelik ’n permanente plek in Janene se hart gekry. Nou, jare later, is sy terug in Potchefstroom, in haar eie praktyk en met een doel voor oë – om die jeug toe te rus vir die toekoms. "Dit begin alles hier" Toe sy haar studies in Psigologie en Teologie as opgewonde eerstejaar begin het, kon sy nooit raai dat die Mooirivier haar soveel jare later terug sou roep om hier ’n verskil te kom maak. Dit was tydens haar derde jaar dat haar fondamente totaal en al geskud is toe haar pa skielik oorlede is aan ’n hartaanval. Min het sy geweet dat hierdie traumatiese gebeurtenis die draaipunt in haar lewe sou wees; en dit was op hierdie stadium waar haar pad met dié van Professor Wentzel Coetzer gekruis het. Mentor, leier en hero Professor Coetzer, wat sedert 2003 by die NWU se Teologiese fakulteit doseer, is ‘n man met ‘n báie indrukwekkende akademiese agtergrond. Dit sluit in ’n MA in Grieks, PhD in Praktiese Teologie, 22 akademiese joernale en boonop het hy as studieleier en promotor gedien vir niks minder as 20 MA en 20 PhD studente nie - om net so paar prestasie hoogtepunte te noem. Nadat Janene berading by Professor Coetzer ontvang het om haar pa se dood te verwerk en talle van sy privaat kursusse bygewoon en voltooi het, het hy haar voorgestel aan sy kontakte in Amerika. Toe sy weer sien, is sy op die vliegtuig op pad na Orlando, Florida om vir ses maande met troubled teens te werk by House of Hope. Foto: Professor Wentzel, Janene en Mark Gregston tydens die AACC World Conference in Nashville, Tennessee in 2019 Terug op tuisbodem Na haar terugkoms, het sy in Brakpan opgeëindig waar sy as jeugwerker by die kerk en berader by twee hoërskole ingeskakel het. “Boy oh boy, man oh man! Het ek stories om te vertel van wat ek by die jeug en gemeenskap gesien en geleer het – trauma, maar ook stories van hoop.” Wanneer moeilike trauma situasies opgeduik het, wanneer sy begin uitbrand het en selfs toe sy oor ’n muur moes spring of oor ’n toiletafskorting moes klim om ’n kind te help, het sy op Professor Coetzer se knoppie gedruk. “Hy was my rots en my anker deur alles.” Janene vertel, tong in die kies, dat sy baie ontsteld is met haar destydse dosente omdat niemand haar gewaarsku of voorberei het op die feit dat ’n jeugberader ‘top fiks’ moet wees nie, juis vir uitsonderlike gevalle soos oor mure of toiletafskortings klouter. Haar droom is om die ou biblioteek in Brakpan in ’n nie-winsgewende organisasie te omskep. Die doel sal wees om tieners uit die moeilikheid te hou en om ook as veilige hawe te dien vir wanneer dinge rof gaan by hul huise. Die groot trek terug Potchefstroom toe Janene het besef dat die jeug van Brakpan nie die enigste gemeenskap is wie in afgryslike toestande gedompel is nie en toe sy besluit om die skuif na Potchefstroom te maak en eindelik haar eie praktyk oop te maak, het Professor Coetzer nie twee keer gedink om sy hulp aan te bied nie. “Ons hele jong generasie is onder druk soos nog nooit tevore en sosiale media is die grootste sondebok!” vertel sy. “My hartsprojek is om kursusse aan te bied vir Potchefstroom se kids, tweens and teens. Ons moet ons jongelinge inlig oor dwelms, selfies, die gevare van sosiale media, depressie, verhoudings, kuber boelies en vele meer.” Foto: Janene saam met graad 11 leerders tydens 'n belydenis kamp Punch kursus Die eerste, twee-dag “Punch” kursus skop af in Januarie vir voornemende graad agt leerders. “Ek gaan hul voorberei vir alles wat hoërskool inhou. Die goed en die kwaad, die lekker en die sleg en hoe ‘n mens met dit alles deal." Janene is op die oomblik ook besig om ’n boek te skryf oor alles wat sy die laaste paar jaar by die jeug geleer het. “Ek hoop die boek sal as ’n kompas kan dien vir ons jong generasie hier in Suid-Afrika.” Vir nou is sy weer 'n Potchefstromer met die hoop om haar merk hier in die gemeenskap te los.
