Turkstra Bakkery, gevestig in die hart van Potchefstroom, is ‘n naam wat sinoniem is met tradisie, kwaliteit en ‘n diep verbintenis tot die gemeenskap. Hierdie legendariese bakkery, wat reeds sedert 1935 vars en heerlike gebak aan die inwoners van Potchefstroom voorsien, is nie net ‘n plek van nostalgie nie, maar ook ‘n voorbeeld van deursettingsvermoë en vakmanskap. Foto (Facebook): Turkstra Bakkery Turkstra se Verhaal Die geskiedenis van Turkstra Bakkery is nou verweef met dié van die Turkstra-familie, wie se storie begin met Andries Turkstra se reis vanaf Dokkum, Nederland. In 1926 het Andries na Suid-Afrika gekom, waar hy later sy verloofde, Hiske Wouters, verwelkom het. Die paartjie het aanvanklik ‘n bakkery in Brandfort bestuur, maar toe die vooruitsigte daar bleek was, het hulle in 1935 na Potchefstroom verhuis. Andries het ‘n bestaande bakkery in die La-Rochelle-gebou op die hoek van Wolmarans- en Kerkstraat gehuur. Om die plek bruikbaar te maak, het Andries en Hiske twee weke lank onverpoos geskrop en skoongemaak. Dié harde werk het vrugte afgewerp, en so is ‘n tradisie van uitnemendheid gebore wat tot vandag toe voortleef. Die ikoniese Turkstra-embleem is later ontwerp deur Klaas Turkstra, met die hulp van die familie se buurman, Lukie Berkowitz. Hierdie simbool, wat nou diep geanker is in Potchefstroom se gemeenskapsgeskiedenis, is ‘n getuigskrif van die bakkery se nalatenskap en kultuur. ‘n Lig vir die Gemeenskap Vanjaar het Turkstra Bakkery hul steun aan die gemeenskap verder versterk deur as ‘n trotse borg van die Abraham Kriel Liggiefees op te tree. Hierdie fees, wat die Kersseisoen met helder ligte en vreugdevolle atmosfeer vier, ondersteun ook ‘n waardige saak deur die Abraham Kriel Kinderhuis te bevoordeel. Serobe Adventures is gefokus op ontwikkeling [op alle vlakke] deur gebruik te maak van die natuurlike omgewing. Magriet Badenhorst was ‘n hoërskool hoof in die Vrystaat ,Frik was ‘n skoolhoof in Gauteng en 'n bekende in die sportkringe. Hiérdie twee dinamiese mense het dit goed gedink om die pret deel van skool, naamlik kampe, te vat en dit te kombineer met die buitelug en natuur. Wat begin het as ‘n lekker wegbreek vir kinders en onderwysers, het so gegroei dat hul omtrent elke naweek gasheer is vir verskeie skole in en om die area. Die hele familie het ‘n groot liefde vir diere en die natuur oor die algemeen en alle aktiwiteite (wat bou projekte insluit) word op só ‘n wyse gedoen dat die area se fauna en flora steeds bewaar word. Die Badenhorsts is steeds betrokke by Serobe Adventures, veral in 'n bemarkingshoedanigheid. Hulle is opgewonde om hulle droom, onder nuwe bestuur, te sien groei. Spasie vir die nasie Die perseel spog met ‘n nuutgeboude koshuis wat 200 kinders kan akkommodeer, die Boskamp kan 66 persone huisves en sodra die nuwe chalets gebou is en die bestaandes klaar opgeknap is, sal dié ‘n verdere 100 persone met ‘n holte vir hul kop voorsien. Met so baie slaapplek is dit geen wonder dat leier ontwikkeling, spanbou naweke, kerkkampe en graad agt kampe slegs ‘n paar van die groepe is wat by die teerpad afdraai na hierdie gronde toe. Een van Serobe Adventures se doelwitte is om elke kind huis toe te stuur met ‘n lewenservaring en bewustheid, nie net van hulself nie, maar ook van die groter prentjie.  Foto (Facebook): Die nuutgeboude koshuis wat 200 kinders kan akkommodeer Nuwe vaardighede is ‘n móét Die gronde bied ‘n groot verskeidenheid fasiliteite en aktiwiteite, onderandere: hindernisbane, high ropes bane, ziplining, abseiling, muurklim, staproetes, boogskiet, nagmars, lantern bekruip, sterrekyk en ‘n lekker groot swembad. Hul bied ook binnehuise uitdagings en aktiwiteite aan wat weer ander vaardighede ontwikkel en versterk. Die hoof doelwit wat die span tydens naweke het, is dat elke kind (of besoeker) ‘n nuwe vaardigheid leer. Ontwikkeling van die kinders is die belangrikste aspek vir die kamp. Vir netbalspelers ontvou 'n tipiese naweek soos volg: Dag 1: Die aankoms is geskeduleer tussen 10:00 vm. en 2:00 nm., waarna die spanne begin met ysbreker aktiwiteite om kameraadskap onder die deelnemers te bevorder. Dag 3: Die finale dag is gewy aan volledige dagwedstryde, met uitkloprondtes en eindig met 'n prysuitdelingseremonie. Dit is ook 'n dag waar ouers aangemoedig word om te kom en hul kinders te ondersteun. Die kampe is voordelig vir talle redes. Miskien is die belangrikste voordeel die geleentheid vir provinsies om mekaar se vaardighede en tegnieke te sien en te leer. Afrigters baat ook by hierdie ervarings, met toegang tot oefeninge, skeidsregterkursusse en wenke oor strapping tegnieke, wat die algehele afrigtings- en speelervaring verbeter. Nommer een prioriteit Veiligheid is die nommer een prioriteit by Serobe Adventures. Chantel en Jaco het beide NQF 4 diplomas in Avontuur en het elkeen hul AQF Kursus voltooi. Al die gidse is op een of ander manier gekwalifiseerd of het ‘n relevante diplome in Avontuur en/of Toerisme. Die fasiliteerders doen deurentyd kursusse en in-house training vind op ‘n gereelde basis plaas. Die personeel het óf Vlak 2 óf Vlak 3 Noodhulp en sommiges is gespesialiseer in Wilderness Based First Aid. Selfs elke personal flotation device (PFD) het ‘n veiligheid sertifikaat. “Ons het hard gewerk om te kom waar ons is in terme van opleiding”, het Chantel genoem.  Die bestuurspan by Serobe doen ‘n risiko assessering vir elke aktiwiteit, leerders moet vrywaringsvorms inhandig voor die tyd, die leerders word in kleiner, veiliger groepe verdeel en die kinders word nie sommer alleen gelaat nie - daar is altyd ‘n fasiliteerder in die omtrek. Foto (Facebook): Veiligheid is die nommer een prioriteit Splish splash Waar daar water betrokke is, is die risiko altyd hoër as met ander aktiwiteite. Wanneer die leerders swem, plaas die fasiliteerders hulself reg rondom die swembad en hou hul die kinders met valkoë dop, “dis snaaks hoe vinnig jy leer tel”, vertel Chantel laggend. Maar dit is heeltemal te verstane - ongelukke gebeur in ‘n oogwink. Wanneer die kinders nie [mag] swem nie, hardloop hulle deur die sproeier “soos toe ons klein was” en wanneer 'n speletjie soos Ring around the Rosies inkorporeer word, baljaar die kinders net so lekker soos wanneer hulle in ‘n swembad sou wees.  Alles en nog meer Vir leerders met spesiale behoeftes word die aktiwiteite vergemaklik, dit word nie uitgehaal nie. Hiérdie kinders wil alles ervaar wat ander kinders tydens hierdie kampe ervaar, “jy hanteer hulle soos enige ander kinders in terme van dissipline, maatreëls en dies meer”. Chantel kies spesifieke fasiliteerders soos die spesifieke groepe benodig en sy weet by watter fasiliteerder die kinders maklik aanklank sal vind.  Foto (Facebook): Spanne besig om vlotte te bou Los dit op die berg Byna elke kind wat die kamp bywoon het ‘n traumatiese ervaring gehad of gaan deur ‘n moeilike [emosionele] tyd. Dit is tydens hulle stil ‘berg sessies’ wat die kinders regtig ‘n ander tipe vrede en verligting ervaar - dit is werklik ‘n heilige oomblik. Alhoewel dit nie intensioneel gedoen word nie, is die oggende op die berg ‘n besonderse ervaring en ‘n persoonlike hoogtepunt vir Chantel. Dit is ook wanneer sy self besef dat dít wat hulle doen, werklik ‘n verskil maak in ‘n kind se lewe - in meer as een opsig. “Elke kind moet ten minste vier keer in hul lewe op ‘n skoolkamp gaan - twee op laerskool en twee op hoërskool”, het Chantel genoem. “Dit is nodig om deur daardie [verskillende] trauma te werk.” Verhelderende en verrykende ervarings Serobe Adventures maak voorsiening vir enigiemand, hetsy dit in terme van dieet vereistes, geloof of fisiese beperkings is. Hulle is ook oop vir ander voorstelle in terme van unieke of spesifieke aktiwiteite wat die onderwysers graag met die leerders wil doen. Chantel vertel van een skool waar die leerders deur die loop van die dag, na elke aktiwiteit, ‘n spesifieke kleur kaartjie gekry het. Dié kaartjies het verskillende bestanddele verteenwoordig en teen aandete, het hul potjiekos gemaak met dié ‘bestanddele’ wat hul teen die einde van die dag bymekaar gemaak het. Die leerders het self hul aandete voorberei - van vuurmaak tot die bestanddele in die pot meng; alles onder ‘n wakende oog van die fasiliteerders, natuurlik. Dit is verhelderende en verrykende ervarings soos dié wat Serobe uniek maak.  Hoe lyk die toekoms? Daar is baie planne en vooruitsigte waarna besoekers kan uitsien by Serobe Adventures. Hulle is besig om ‘n addisionele swembad te bou, ‘n nuwe volleyball baan, rugbyveld en binnehuise sport arena. By die ‘oord afdeling’ is hulle tans besig om nuwe chalets te bou en is van plan om die bestaande chalets te restoureer. ‘n Springmat en glybaan gaan ook hier aangebring word. Die afgeleë Boskamp gaan ook ‘n spreekwoordelike nuwe laag verf kry wat afdakke en ‘n klimraam vir die kleingoed insluit. Vierwielmotorfiets roetes en perdritte is ook nog ‘n droom wat Chantel vir die kamp het.  Foto (Facebook): Opgeknapte hindernisbane Hulle volg nie tendense nie Alhoewel hulle hul “eie ding doen” en nie juis steur aan die nuutste tendense in die industie nie, doen die personeel deurlopend kursusse om op hoogte te bly van veranderinge of nuwe veiligheidsmaatreëls in die industrie. Die Departement van Toerisme stel instansies in kennis van ‘n wet wat verander en dan moet die instansies dié nuwe wet implementeer. Met al die deurlopende veranderinge, leer die bestuur én personeel elke dag iets nuuts van die industrie. Hulle streef daarna om die programme ‘vars’ te hou om te verhoed dat dit vervelig word. “Jy dink deurentyd aan nog hindernisse wat jy kan bou, dink aan nog aktiwiteite wat jy kan doen”, het Chantel vertel.  Grootste uitdagings Vir Chantel, persoonlik, is die grootste uitdaging wanneer jou energie (as fasiliteerder) nie die energie van ‘n groep ewenaar nie. Die oorhoofse uitdaging is onderhoud in die algemeen. Omrede hul so baie keer back to back bespreek is met kampe, is dit moeilik om die hindernisse of aktiwiteite te onderhou. Dit is juis hoekom hulle die winter maande nou gebruik om al die onderhoud en instandhouding te doen, sodat hulle slaggereed is wanneer die groepe weer op Serobe neersak. The Promosa Community Youth Centre (PCYC) hosted its second annual Santa Gift Box Closing Event in a heartwarming celebration at The Grens Park in Promosa. This event, a beacon of community spirit and generosity, marked the culmination of a year of impactful programs and engagement with the youth, children, and artists of the area. The closing event saw these beautifully wrapped gifts distributed in a vibrant park setting, bringing a magical atmosphere to The Grens. Beyond the joy of gift-giving, the PCYC ensured that over 200 attendees were treated to a hearty meal. The food was made possible by the unwavering support of community sponsors, along with contributions from a dedicated 17-year-old staff member who stepped in to cover additional needs. This extraordinary gesture underscored the commitment of PCYC’s team to making a difference in the lives of the community. Donations and Outreach The Patriotic Alliance Party contributed to the event by donating clothing, which was distributed among the attendees.
