The situation escalated following a mechanical failure at the Ikageng Water Pump Station on Tuesday, 28 November 2023. Pump Failures The crisis began when Pump 2 at the station suffered damage, causing an immediate halt to water supply in the area. Although the Service Provider and Instrumentation Crew were quick to respond, starting repair works on Wednesday, 29 November, their efforts were met with further setbacks. Pump 1, while initially operational, ceased functioning by late afternoon the same day. Loadshedding Complication Compounding the issue, scheduled load shedding on 29 November further disrupted any hope of immediate restoration of normal water supply, leaving residents dependent on water tankers for their basic needs. The council, in its media release, assured residents that maintenance work would commence on 30 November at 07h00, and apologized for the inconvenience, particularly to the residents of Old Ikageng. They also provided a contact number for the JB Marks Local Municipality Disaster Management Center to request water tanker services. Questioning Council Transparency However, the community's patience is wearing thin. Residents are not only exasperated by the current water supply disruption but are also questioning the municipality's overall efficiency and transparency. One resident criticized the council's statement for lacking a clear timeline for the restoration of regular water supply, expressing skepticism about the prolonged reliance on water tankers. Another resident pointed out the irony of scheduled load shedding during crucial repair works. Allegations from Community Moreover, the water crisis in the extensions, ongoing for over five months, has sparked allegations of corruption. Community members suspect that the water tankers supplied are part of a scheme benefiting associates within the council, though these claims remain unconfirmed. The lack of service delivery has led to several protest actions in the past.
