- The Old Gunpowder House of Potchefstroom - A Relic of South Africa’s Military PastIn Tourism and Accommodation·March 4, 2025Among the many historical structures in Potchefstroom, one of the most significant yet often overlooked is the Old Gunpowder House. Constructed between 1841 and 1863, this building stands as one of the oldest surviving structures in the city. Once a crucial part of Potchefstroom’s military and strategic landscape, it played a vital role during the First War of Independence (1880-1881) and remains a silent witness to South Africa’s tumultuous past. Image : Facebook Lennie Gouws The Role of Gunpowder in Early South African Settlements The use of gunpowder was an essential aspect of life for the early European settlers in South Africa. Whether for hunting or defense, gunpowder was in high demand. Before the widespread use of modern cartridges in the 1870s, firearms were loaded manually with loose gunpowder and projectiles, making the safe storage of these explosive materials a necessity. Due to the potential risk of accidental explosions, gunpowder magazines were constructed outside of main settlements. Potchefstroom, as an important Voortrekker town, was no exception. Early Efforts to Establish a Gunpowder Magazine Historical records suggest that in 1841, J.J. Hudson appealed to the Volksraad in Pietermaritzburg for a gunpowder magazine to be constructed in Potchefstroom. However, approval was contingent upon the town’s relocation from its original site near Boskop Dam to its current location. For years, government authorities stored gunpowder in the magistrate’s office, a less-than-ideal arrangement due to the risks associated with large quantities of explosives. The first official gunpowder magazine was constructed between 1854 and 1857. However, this structure suffered severe damage in 1880 when British forces partially demolished it to obtain materials for their fortifications during the First War of Independence. The Siege of Potchefstroom and the Magazine’s Role in Warfare The Old Gunpowder House became a critical site during the First Anglo-Boer War (1880-1881), particularly during the Siege of Potchefstroom. When British forces arrived in the town in late 1880, they confiscated all available weapons and ammunition and stored them inside the magazine. Recognizing its strategic importance, the Boer forces aimed to reclaim control of the gunpowder reserves. Both sides dug trenches leading toward the magazine in an attempt to gain access to the valuable ammunition stored inside. On the night of January 2, 1881, Lieutenant Rundle led a daring raid on the magazine, managing to seize nearly a ton of gunpowder and more than 30,000 rounds of ammunition. In retaliation, Boer forces shelled the magazine the following day. The magazine, which was already weakened from previous conflicts, suffered extensive damage. The Rebuilding of the Magazine Following the war, authorities constructed a fourth iteration of the gunpowder magazine in 1882, which is the structure still standing today. Recognizing the evolving nature of ammunition technology, the new magazine was built to store metallic cartridges rather than loose gunpowder, reducing fire hazards. As a result, merchants were eventually permitted to store ammunition in their shops rather than being required to keep it in the government-run facility. Heritage Status and Modern-Day Significance On August 31, 1973, the Old Gunpowder House was officially declared a National Monument, later reclassified as a Grade 2 Provincial Heritage Site. However, despite its historical significance, the building stands largely unnoticed by the thousands of travelers who pass by it daily. Located near the on-ramp to the N12 from Potchindustria, it remains in relative obscurity, its legacy overshadowed by modern infrastructure. The Potchefstroom gunpowder magazine serves as a rare reminder of a time when the town was a focal point of conflict and survival. Though no longer in use, it is a structure built to withstand the immense power of explosives—estimated at over 5,000 horsepower per kilogram of gunpowder. Conclusion The Old Gunpowder House of Potchefstroom is more than just an abandoned building; it is a symbol of the town’s rich military history and resilience. As one of the few remaining structures from the early days of the Voortrekkers, it deserves greater recognition and preservation efforts to ensure its story continues to be told for generations to come.0051

- Keenan Ahrends - The Jazz Guitarist You Need to KnowIn Music Talk ·February 26, 2025Keenan Ahrends is not just another jazz guitarist—he’s a musical storyteller. If you’ve never heard of him, don’t worry, you’re about to get schooled in all things Ahrends. This Johannesburg-based guitarist and composer has been making waves in the jazz world, both locally and internationally, with a style that’s as expressive as it is technically refined. Image : Facebook Keenan Ahrends From Teenage Strummer to Jazz Virtuoso Ahrends picked up the guitar at fifteen. Now, let’s be honest—most teenagers with a guitar either start a garage band or try (and fail) to impress their crushes with bad covers of love songs. But Ahrends? He took things seriously. So seriously that he ended up studying jazz performance at the University of Cape Town and the Norwegian Academy of Music, graduating in 2009. As if that wasn’t enough, he went back to the books and completed an honours degree in performance at Wits University in 2019. During this time, he dove deep into the life and music of South African jazz legend Errol Dyers. Not exactly light reading, but definitely a passion project that has shaped his approach to composition and improvisation. Learning from the Masters They say you’re only as good as the company you keep. Well, Ahrends has kept some legendary company. During his studies, he learned from top-tier musicians like Jon Eberson, Wayne Bosch, Eckhard Baur, Alvin Dyers, and Andrew Lilly. That’s like going to football practice and getting coached by Messi, Ronaldo, and Pele all at once. Touring the World, One Jazz Club at a Time Ahrends has done more touring than a rock star with a world map and a travel budget. He’s played all over, from Mozambique to Sweden, from Norway to Nigeria. And it’s not just the number of countries that impresses—it’s the venues and festivals he’s played at. Ever heard of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival? Of course, you have. What about the Joy of Jazz Festival? Standard Bank Youth Jazz Festival? He’s ticked all those boxes and more. He’s also performed at the Amersfoort Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, the Birds Eye Jazz Club in Switzerland, and even the Ocus Pocus Festival on Reunion Island. That last one sounds like a place where magic happens—and judging by his music, it probably did. Making Music That Matters In 2017, Ahrends dropped his debut album, Narrative, featuring a stellar lineup including Romy Brauteseth, Claude Cozens, Sisonke Xonti, and Nicholas Williams. It was met with critical acclaim because, well, it was good. Really good. Then, in 2022, he followed it up with Perseverance: Live at the Bird’s Eye. This time, he teamed up with Romy Brauteseth again, along with Sphelelo Mazibuko, Domenic Landolf, and Lukas Thoeni. Both albums showcase his signature style—evocative, emotive, and deeply rooted in the jazz tradition while pushing the genre forward. More Than Just a Guitarist Ahrends isn’t just about playing; he’s about composing too. He’s written extensively for his trio (featuring Brauteseth and Mazibuko) and has also arranged music for larger ensembles like the Cape Town Ghoema Orchestra. Basically, if there’s a jazz outfit worth knowing about, chances are Ahrends has either played with them, written for them, or influenced them in some way. The Big Apple and Back Home After a successful tour in New York, Ahrends is bringing his trio back home for a South African tour in February. The final stop? The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at UKZN, Durban. If you’re in the area, this is your chance to hear compositions from both his albums performed live by a world-class trio, featuring Benjamin Jephta on bass and Sphelelo Mazibuko on drums. Why You Should Be Listening to Keenan Ahrends Ahrends is one of those musicians who doesn’t just play music—he speaks through it. His playing is sensitive yet powerful, intricate yet accessible. He’s an important voice in the Southern African jazz scene, and if you haven’t checked out his work yet, now’s the time. His tour and projects are made possible through the support of Concerts SA, the Festival Enterprise Catalyst, SAMRO, the National Treasury Jobs Fund, and IKS Cultural Consulting—proving that even the jazz world recognizes that Ahrends is the real deal. So, do yourself a favour. Whether you’re a jazz aficionado or just someone looking to expand your playlist, give Keenan Ahrends a listen. Your ears will thank you. Bredell as superintendent.

- The Architectural Heritage of North-West University's Potchefstroom CampusIn Tourism and Accommodation·March 4, 2025North-West University's Potchefstroom Campus boasts a rich tapestry of architectural heritage, reflecting its evolution from modest beginnings to a prominent educational institution. This article delves into the history of some of its most significant buildings, highlighting their origins, architectural styles, and roles within the university's development. Image : NWU University Website Early Foundations: The Heimat Building The first permanent structure on the campus was the Heimat Building, inaugurated in 1927. Designed by renowned architect Gerard Moerdyk, this neo-Cape Dutch style edifice served as a male student residence, accommodating 50 students. The name "Heimat," meaning "home" in German, was affectionately chosen by its initial residents. Beyond its residential purpose, the Heimat Hall functioned as a dining area and venue for concerts and meetings until the Main Building's completion in 1931. Today, Heimat stands as a testament to the university's early commitment to providing a nurturing environment for its students. The Main Building: A Symbol of Resilience and Growth Officially opened on April 4, 1931, the Main Building was the first substantial academic structure on campus. Architect Henri Louw from Bloemfontein designed it in the Italian Renaissance style, evident in its distinctive balconies. The building's seven arches symbolize the seven candelabra in the university's emblem, reflecting a deep connection to its identity. Constructed at a cost of R372 652, primarily funded through donations, the cornerstone was laid by Dr. D.F. Malan, then Minister of Education, on August 4, 1930. Initially, it housed the rector's office, administrative functions, laboratories, and the library. In 1984, it was declared a National Monument, underscoring its historical and architectural significance. Image : NWU University Website The 1949 Library Fire: A Turning Point On February 23, 1949, tragedy struck when a short circuit ignited a fire in the library located in the Main Building's northeast wing. Despite efforts to contain it, the blaze destroyed approximately 30,000 books and 4,000 magazines, including irreplaceable manuscripts of poet Jan F.E. Celliers. This devastating event galvanized nationwide support, leading to generous donations of books and funds. Plans for a modern library were expedited, with the cornerstone laid in March 1951, marking a pivotal moment in the university's commitment to academic excellence. The Natural Sciences Complex: Embracing Modernity The evolution of the Natural Sciences Complex, colloquially known as the "Spider Building," showcases the university's dedication to advancing scientific education. The initial Physics Building, opened on June 11, 1955, featured the second lift installed in Potchefstroom, a testament to its modernity. By 1965, plans emerged to create a comprehensive complex linking existing facilities to accommodate departments like Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics. Architect Nardus Conradie designed the complex, and by 1979, the interconnected structures, resembling a spider from an aerial view, were completed. This innovative design facilitated interdisciplinary collaboration and reflected the university's forward-thinking approach. Image : NWU University Website Architectural Legacy and Cultural Significance The architectural heritage of NWU's Potchefstroom Campus is not merely a collection of buildings but a narrative of resilience, growth, and cultural identity. Each structure, from the neo-Cape Dutch Heimat to the Italian Renaissance Main Building and the modernist Spider Complex, embodies the university's journey through time. These edifices stand as enduring symbols of the institution's commitment to providing a nurturing and progressive environment for a diverse student body, honoring its past while embracing the future.0046
