- Suzuki Swift 1.2 GLX Wins Best Budget Car in SA at the 2025 CarsAwardsIn Car Talk·March 5, 2025When shopping for an affordable new car, many buyers assume they’ll have to make sacrifices in quality, safety, or technology. However, Suzuki continues to prove that affordability doesn’t mean compromise. The 2025 CarsAwards, sponsored by Absa, once again crowned the Suzuki Swift 1.2 GLX as the Best Budget Car in South Africa, marking yet another win for this popular hatchback. Image: Penta Suzuki Potchefstroom This year, the Swift faced tough competition from two strong rivals in the Budget Car category: the all-new Hyundai Exter 1.2 Executive - Final Score: 71.2% and the feature-packed Mahindra XUV 3XO 1.2T MX3 - Final Score: 69.2%. These three finalists were chosen based on their affordability, practicality, fuel efficiency, and overall value for money—critical factors for budget-conscious South African buyers. Despite the impressive credentials of its competitors, the Suzuki Swift outperformed them all, earning a category-winning 73.3% score. But what makes the Swift such a dominant force in this segment? What Makes a “Best Budget Car”? The Budget Car category is one of the most competitive in the CarsAwards because it speaks to the heart of the South African market—where value, efficiency, and reliability are key. To qualify, vehicles had to meet these criteria: ✅ Price under R300 000 ✅ ABS, at least two airbags, and a service plan included ✅ Strong fuel efficiency, practicality, and overall brand reputation With these requirements in mind, the Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Exter, and Mahindra XUV 3XO emerged as the top three contenders, proving they offer some of the best bang-for-buck in the local car market. Image: CarsAwards Why the Suzuki Swift Stands Out The Suzuki Swift 1.2 GLX claimed the title because of its exceptional blend of affordability, features, and low running costs. It’s fun to drive, incredibly fuel-efficient, and comes with a long warranty and solid after-sales support. With a 5-year/200 000 km warranty, a low fuel consumption of just 4.4 L/100 km, and a host of modern safety and convenience features, it’s easy to see why the Swift continues to dominate this category—winning six out of the last eight CarsAwards in the Budget Car segment. - PAWS: Meet Layla- Tiekie and Doepie – In Need of a HomeIn Paws·March 13, 2025Finding a new best friend isn't about scrolling through fancy breeders or browsing pet stores. Sometimes, the perfect companion is already waiting—tail wagging, eyes hopeful—at a shelter like Potchefstroom Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). This time, we’re introducing three characters looking for their second shot at a forever home. Layla – The Gentle German Shorthaired Pointer First up, meet Layla—a five-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer with a heart as big as her floppy ears. Already sterilised, this girl is all about love and loyalty. She’s the kind of dog who’ll sit by your side no matter what, whether you’re binge-watching rugby or braaing with mates. She’s affectionate, well past the puppy chaos phase, and ready to settle down in a home that will appreciate her sweet nature. Tiekie – Small Dog, Big Personality On the other end of the size spectrum, we’ve got Tiekie, a two-year-old Chihuahua mix who had to be left behind when his family moved. Small but mighty, Tiekie may be pocket-sized, but don’t let that fool you—he’s got all the charm and confidence of a much bigger dog. If you’re looking for a little companion with a big presence, Tiekie might just be your guy. Doepie – The Fluffy Mystery Man Then there’s Doepie, a two-year-old Poodle mix who was found wandering the streets and never claimed. That means he’s still waiting for someone to give him the love and care he deserves. With his curly coat and easygoing vibe, Doepie is a classic underdog story in the making. He’s got the looks, the charm, and the potential to be the best snuggle buddy around. How to Adopt or Foster Adopting a dog isn’t just about giving them a home—it’s about changing both their life and yours. These three legends are available through PAWS, and if you’re keen to meet them (or foster while they wait for a permanent home), give 071 681 9264 a call. They’re ready when you are. 🐾2020

Unwavering Focus With an unwavering focus, it directed its attention towards both the guests and myself. The mother Cheetah, casting a sidelong glance, seemed unfazed by our familiar presence. Young animals, driven by their innate curiosity, explore anything novel in their surroundings. Gentle Reminder This behavior may serve as a way for the mother Cheetah to convey that our presence posed no threat. Despite their familiarity, it's crucial to remember that these are still wild creatures. As a gentle reminder, the cub, perhaps feeling a bit uneasy, concluded the encounter by hissing at my camera when it ventured too close, emphasizing the importance of respecting their wild nature. Tension In The Air On a recent game drive, we were fortunate to witness an intense encounter between two majestic Cheetah brothers and a formidable herd of Buffalo. As we approached the scene, the tension in the air was palpable. Two Cheetah Brothers and A Herd of Cape Buffalo The two Cheetah brothers had their eyes fixed on the approaching herd of Buffalo. Cheetahs are known to primarily hunt smaller prey, but the Buffalo, a giant of the savanna, were no strangers to their presence. The Buffalo seemed to understand that they weren't the typical menu for these sleek predators, but they also knew that their newborn calves could be potential targets if separated from the safety of the herd. The Standoff The standoff continued, creating a heart-pounding moment as we watched these two remarkable species coexist. The Buffalo meandered by, and the Cheetahs remained still, fully aware of the potential consequences of their actions. Wonder and Fascination This unique sighting serves as a reminder of the complex interactions that occur in the animal kingdom. Nature's dynamics are a constant source of wonder and fascination, and Southern Africa continues to be a sanctuary for unforgettable wildlife encounters. Harmony of Life In The Wild As we left the scene, the Cheetahs' choice to wait and the Buffalo's vigilance left us with a deep appreciation for the delicate harmony of life in the wild. This was not just a moment of predation but a testament to the intricate web of survival and coexistence that is the hallmark of Southern Africa's game drives. Safari Experience Southern Africa is renowned for its incredible wildlife and captivating safari experiences, here our encounter was with a coalition of two brother Cheetahs, who exemplified the power of collaboration and strategic hunting. Cheetahs are typically solitary animals, but in this case, two brothers had formed a close-knit partnership. Range of Advantages This unique bond offered them a range of advantages, including increased safety, better chances of successful hunts, and heightened vigilance against potential threats. As predators, Cheetahs rely on their exceptional speed and precision to secure a meal. Targeting Impala During our game drive, the brotherly coalition demonstrated their hunting prowess by targeting a young impala. The impala, while agile and alert, was no match for the well-coordinated cheetah team. The young impala, chosen for its manageable size and ease of consumption, fell victim to the Cheetahs' lightning-fast sprint. Well Deserved Meal Working together, they executed a seamless chase and brought down their prey with impressive skill. Their successful kill provided them with a well-deserved meal, rich in nutrition and energy. The Cheetahs knew the importance of efficiency in the wild, where danger could lurk around every corner. Efficiency In The Wild After securing their meal, they wasted no time in consuming it. Their swift feeding allowed them to leave the area promptly, reducing the risk of attracting other predators to the scene. It highlighted the importance of collaboration, adaptability, and efficiency in the wild. A Lasting Impression The Cheetah coalition's successful hunt was a testament to their ability to thrive in this challenging environment, and it left a lasting impression on all those fortunate enough to witness it. - Birds I Love – The Yellow – Billed StorkIn Green Talk·November 22, 2023Discovering the Yellow - Billed Stork Today, we venture into the captivating world of the Yellow - Billed Stork (Mycteria ibis), a magnificent wading Stork that graces the landscapes of Africa. Join me as we uncover the fascinating details about its taxonomy, behavior, and the colourful spectacle it brings to the avian tapestry. Taxonomy Tales and Evolutionary Connections The evolutionary history of the Yellow - Billed Stork, a close relative of the American Woodstork, Milky Stork, and Painted Stork. These four species, collectively known as Wood Storks, share remarkable similarities in behavior and morphology, forming a distinctive clade. Initially associated with the genus Ibis, the Yellow - Billed Stork has long been recognized as a true Stork, dispelling any confusion about its classification. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography A Visual Symphony: Description of the Yellow - Billed Stork Picture a Stork standing tall at 90 - 105 cm, adorned with a white body, a short black tail glossed with hues of green and purple, and a deep yellow, slightly curved bill. During the breeding season, a stunning transformation of pink hues grace the upper wings, legs turn bright pink, and the bill and face deepen in colour. Juveniles, in contrast, sport a more subdued greyish - brown attire. Ballet of the Skies: Flight and Aerobatics The Yellow - Billed Stork takes to the skies with alternating flaps and glides, covering vast distances with a soaring and gliding motion. Impressively, they showcase aerobatic feats, diving deeply at high speeds and flipping over in a display of aerial prowess. During their non - vocal moments, these Storks engage in hissing falsetto screams and bill clattering, creating a symphony of sounds, especially in courtship displays. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Habitat Tales: From East Africa to Madagascar Yellow - Billed Stork's preferred habitats, range from wetlands and shallow lakes to mudflats. While primarily found in Eastern Africa, their distribution extends from Senegal to South Africa, with occasional sightings in western Madagascar. Their migratory patterns, are shaped by rainfall and local conditions, as some populations become facultative nomads, migrating to optimize feeding opportunities. Dinner Time Drama: Food and Feeding Habits They patiently wade through water, relying on their sense of touch to detect and capture prey. Their diet includes small freshwater fish, crustaceans, worms, and occasional amphibians or birds. When feeding they snap their bill and systematically stir their feet through the water to chase up anything lurking underneath the surface, displaying a keen hunting strategy. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Breeding Ballet: Courtship, Nesting, and Family Life Males showcase intricate displays like Display Preening and Swaying - Twig Grasping. Their breeding behavior is synchronized with rainfall and flooding, ensuring an ample supply of food for the young. They also perform collaborative efforts from both parents during incubation, feeding, and guarding the nestlings until they fledge after 50 - 55 days. Conservation Challenges and Cultural Connections The challenges faced by Yellow - Billed Storks are poaching and habitat reduction, especially in East Africa. Despite being listed under the African - Eurasian Waterbird Agreement, the species is currently categorized as Least Concern due to its widespread distribution and relatively high breeding success. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Conclusion In the grand symphony of African nature, the Yellow - Billed Stork stands as a majestic player, weaving together tales of evolution, survival, and the delicate dance of life. Celebrating and conserving the beauty and resilience of this remarkable wading Stork for future generations is indeed needed, a true gem in the avian kingdom. - Birds I Love - The Southern Carmine Bee - EaterIn Green Talk·February 27, 2024Discovering the Southern Carmine Bee - Eater In the vibrant tapestry of the African wilderness, where every hue finds its echo and every sound its harmony, there exists a creature whose very existence is a testament to nature's extravagance - the Southern Carmine Bee - Eater (Merops nubicoides). This bird, with its dazzling carmine plumage and acrobatic flights, is not just a marvel of the avian world but a vital player in the ecological balance of its habitat. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography A Portrait in the Carmine Bee - Eater Imagine a bird so vivid that its presence seems like a brushstroke on the canvas of the open savanna and river valleys it calls home. The Southern Carmine Bee - Eater stands out for its rich, carmine red coloration, contrasted strikingly with a blue crown and undertail. Adults sport flamboyant reddish - pink plumage and elongated tail streamers that flutter like ribbons in the breeze. Even in flight, their grace is unmatched, with silver - grey tails and a light blue underbelly completing this masterpiece of nature's design. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Nomads of the African Skies This species embarks on a migratory journey that is as dramatic as their appearance. From the breeding grounds in Zimbabwe and Zambia to the summer retreats in South Africa and back to the heart of Equatorial Africa, their life is a cycle of endless movement. This journey takes them across a variety of landscapes, from KwaZulu - Natal and Namibia to Gabon and Kenya, painting the skies with their vibrant colors. Masters of the Air The Southern Carmine Bee - Eater's diet is a testament to its aerial prowess. Primarily feeding on Bees, Wasps, and other flying insects, these birds have honed a remarkable hunting strategy. They perform a delicate dance in the air, snatching their prey mid - flight or using larger animals and even vehicles as moving vantage points to catch insects trying to escape. Their ability to neutralize their prey's stingers by skillfully rubbing them against a perch before consumption showcases their adaptability and intelligence. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Life in Harmony Breeding and social life for these Bee - Eaters are as communal as their hunting. Preferring the vertical banks of low - altitude river valleys and floodplains for nesting, they dig long burrows where life begins in earnest. Here, in colonies that can number in the thousands, they lay their eggs and raise their young in a bustling community, sharing the duties and joys of family life. A Symphony of Colors and Sounds The Southern Carmine Bee - Eater not only dazzles the eyes but also the ears. Their calls - a deep, nasal "gra - gra - gra" - are a staple sound in their habitat, contributing to the rich auditory tapestry of the African wilderness. These sounds, along with their vivid colors, make them not just a sight to behold but a presence to be experienced fully. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Guardians of the Ecosystem Beyond their beauty, these birds play a crucial role in their ecosystems. By controlling insect populations, they help maintain the delicate balance of their habitats. Yet, they face threats from habitat destruction, the use of insecticides, and direct exploitation by humans, drawn by their stunning feathers or in misguided attempts to protect beekeeping interests.
