Exploring the Springbok As a nature guide and nature enthusiast, I have had the privilege of exploring the breathtaking landscapes of Southern Africa, and no experience is complete without encountering the iconic Springbok.  The Springbok, Antidorcas marsupialis, is a medium-sized antelope that graces the arid expanses of South and Southwest Africa with its elegance. With its striking features, intriguing behaviours, and historical significance, the Springbok is a true national treasure. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography A Portrait of the Springbok The Springbok is a beautiful sight, standing at 71 to 86 cm at the shoulder and weighing between 27 and 42 kg. It is characterized by its slender frame, long legs, and a pair of sleek black horns, which curve gracefully backward.  Its white face is adorned with a distinctive dark stripe running from the eyes to the mouth, and its coat, a light brown hue marked by a reddish-brown stripe, adds to its charm. The white rump flap distinguishes it from other African antelopes. One of the most enchanting aspects of the Springbok is its ability to perform a mesmerizing behaviour known as "pronking." This remarkable display involves the springbok leaping into the air, reaching heights of up to 2 meters, with a stiff-legged posture, arched back, and a raised white flap. This pronking behaviour is a sight to behold. An Enigmatic Way of Life Active mainly at dawn and dusk, Springbok form herds known as harems. In earlier times, these antelope embarked on epic migrations, known as "trekking", across the Kalahari desert and the Karoo.  Although such mass migrations are completely non-existent, you can still witness seasonal congregations in areas with short vegetation, such as the Kalahari desert. These agile antelopes are primarily browsers on shrubs and young succulents. These graceful creatures, in their prime condition, begin their annual rut as the rainy season begins.  The magic happens six months later, with newborns gracing the world in the splendid embrace of October and November, just before the rain returns. Yet, nature's clock isn't always set in stone; it dances to the tune of arid climates, sometimes shifting by a couple of months. Fascinatingly, young Springbok females can bear offspring as early as six to seven months of age, while the males need two years to reach maturity.  As the rutting season unfolds, the males transform into vigilant guardians of their territories, spanning a vast expanse of 25 to 70 hectares. In their fervent display of ardour, they emit resonant grunts, engage in spirited combat with the local vegetation using their formidable horns, and create symbolic middens using urine and dung.  The Springbok and Humans: A Fascinating Connection The Springbok has played a significant role in the lives of the people of South Africa. This antelope was adopted as a national symbol during the 20th century, a time marked by white minority rule.  It has been embraced by various South African sports teams, most notably the national rugby union team, where it became an enduring symbol of unity even after the end of apartheid. The Springbok also graced the logo of South African Airways for many years, highlighting its importance to the nation. This remarkable antelope is even featured on the reverse of the South African Krugerrand coin, further emphasizing its status as a national icon. The export of springbok skins, especially from Namibia and South Africa, has become a thriving industry.  Springbok meat is considered a delicacy and is readily available in South African supermarkets. It's worth noting that Springbok meat is exported as mechanically deboned meat to overseas markets, accounting for a significant portion of game meat production from Namibian farmlands. Conservation of The Springbok From a conservation perspective, the springbok is categorized as a "least concern" species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.  Fortunately, there are no major threats to their long-term survival, and their population is even expanding. It's a testament to the adaptability and resilience of this remarkable creature in the face of environmental challenges. Modern-day essentials such as rear air-conditioning, three 12V accessory sockets, keyless entry, cruise control, and a reverse camera come standard, indicating Suzuki’s commitment to providing a blend of luxury and practicality. Performance and Drive Under the hood, the XL6 houses the familiar K15B petrol four-cylinder engine, generating a respectable 77 kW at 6,000 r/min and 138 N.m at 4,400 r/min. On the move, especially during my drive from Lanseria airport to La Joya wellness centre and onward to the Kyalami Grand Prix circuit, the XL6 showcased its mettle. Local school Ferdie's is known for its prowess in academics, sports, and extracurricular activities. The year 2023 has proved to be a remarkable year for the school's disc shooting team, and the entire community can't help but share the excitement. A Season of Excellence The team's outstanding achievements have captured the local community's imagination and enthusiasm. Three of Ferdie's sharpshooters, who have been involved in the sport for the past five years, have once again performed incredibly well this year. They have also been selected to the North West team, which will participate in the South African National School Shooters Union's SA Championships, to be held in Johannesburg in October. Farewell to Senior Players During the past weekend's North West Disc Shooting Trials, the school bid farewell to Marno Colyn and Richter Jansen van Vuuren, both of whom are matriculating this year. League Participation and Achievements In the six league meetings held, the individual performances were outstanding. Marno's League Achievements: Participated in 5 leagues. Secured 3 first places, a 2nd place, and a 3rd place. Richter's League Achievements: Participated in all 6 leagues. Achieved a 2nd and 3rd place, and consistently ranked among the top 7 shooters. Hanno's League Achievements: Participated in all 6 leagues. Achieved a 2nd and 3rd place, and consistently ranked among the top 7 shooters. North West Trials - 4th and 5th August 2023 A shooter is preferably to participate in all six league competitions and the NG Open if they can. The best 3 scores are then used to issue trial invitations. The top 30 shooters in the trials are then selected to represent North West at the national competition. Trial Results: After the trials, the year's best shooters were named, and North West's team was announced to go to the national championships. Marno Colyn was named the best U21 shooter at the North West trials and also achieved the highest overall score that day. Marno was also named the best U21 shooter of the year. Calculated on total points, Marno was North West's best shooter this year. Hanno and Richter also achieved good scores and were placed 6th and 7th, respectively, and were included in the North West team. Congratulations, Team! Late last year we reported on the issue of the electricity meter issue facing the country, the original article below... and with JB Marks council finally announcing the implementation of the program today to avert the situation we described, there seems to have arisen more questions from the public. This week we will publish an update on the article and answer some of the most common questions, so do watch this space. Herewith the original article that provides some details on the program, as published last year. POTCHEFSTROOM – In a disheartening revelation, it appears that South Africa, including our local region, is on the cusp of a major electricity vending dilemma. By November 2024, millions of STS-compliant prepaid electricity meters will stop functioning, plummeting municipal electricity sale revenues to zero, and possibly leading to households being plunged into possible darkness yet again for completely different reasons. But how did we reach this point? Here's an overview of the background leading to this looming crisis: Origins of the System: In 1993, a new wave of prepaid electricity meters was launched in South Africa. These were designed to be tamper-proof and offered consumers the ease of paying for their electricity upfront, much like how prepaid mobile services work. The Unique Code System: The core design of these meters relies on a system that ensures every electricity voucher code entered is unique. This not only allowed consumers to pay for and vend electricity based on their needs but also protected against fraud. The Time-Stamp Dilemma: A key part of ensuring the uniqueness of every code was linking a section of the 20-digit token that users enter to the minute the token was purchased. However, this system had an inherent limitation. The designers allotted two bytes of space for the time segment of the token, which translates to 16,777,216 unique minutes, or roughly 31.92 years. Inbuilt Expiry Date: The system's architecture thus means these meters come with an inherent expiry date, calculated from their inception date in 1993. This brings us to a total shut-off on 24 November 2024 when these meters will run out of unique minutes and subsequently, stop functioning. Global Repercussions: Although this is a significant issue in South Africa, where 10 million such meters are in operation, this is a global concern. Around 70 million meters worldwide are expected to be hit by this expiry. The STSA's Proposed Solution: The Standard Transfer Specification Association (STSA) came up with an update to the system. This aims to change the base date for the token ID from 1993 to 2014, adding another two decades to the meters' functionality. Implementation Hurdles: While the solution sounds straightforward, the reality is far from it. Each meter needs to be manually updated as remote updates aren't possible. Eskom, the primary electricity public utility, has been aware of this looming challenge for nearly a decade. However, out of the 6.5 million meters under its jurisdiction, very few have been updated. Municipalities' Slow Response: Despite 167 licensed distribution zones in the country, only 43 municipalities have started the necessary update projects. This lax response rate exacerbates the urgency of the situation. Potchefstroom Status For Potchefstroom residents, the implications are serious. The SALGA dashboard indicates the JB Marks municipality has approximately 42,606 meters requiring updates. Regrettably, only 5,704 meters have seen these changes. Given the looming deadline, this equates to an target of resetting about 2,460 meters monthly. South African Local Government Association (SALGA) In July 2021, the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) undertook a comprehensive survey to gauge the current status of the Standard Transfer Specification (STS) prepayment meters TID rollover in South African municipalities. The survey came in anticipation of the critical 2024 TID rollover milestone. From the study, it emerged that South Africa has over 3.09 million prepaid meters in place. Notably, a limited number of municipalities have initiated the TID rollover process, with a significant proportion of these being located in regions like the Western Cape, Gauteng, and Kwazulu Natal. SALGA Workshop In light of these findings, on 24th March 2022, SALGA organized a workshop. This assembly aimed not only to discern the progress made by both municipalities and Eskom in the prepayment meter reset initiative but also to inaugurate the SALGA dashboard for the STS prepayment meter reset project. During this workshop, collaborative discussions unearthed the shared challenges municipalities face. Recognizing the mutual hurdles, the workshop underscored the importance of municipalities sharing insights and learning from each other's experiences. SALGA Tracking Dashboard A significant outcome of these efforts is the SALGA-established dashboard. It provides real-time data on the TID rollover meter reset, detailing metrics such as the total meters set for a reset, meters reset per municipality, and those still outstanding. With a commitment to regularly updating this dashboard, SALGA comitted to gather data from municipalities every quarter via an online questionnaire. The association urged municipalities to actively participate by filling out the questionnaire available through the provided link.
