Exploring the Blue Wildebeest Welcome to the untamed African savannas, where the rhythmic gallop of the Blue Wildebeest echoes through the sweeping grasslands. Today, we embark on a captivating journey to uncover the secrets of this enigmatic species, also known as the Common Wildebeest.  With its distinct appearance, unique behaviors, and vital role in the ecosystem, the Blue Wildebeest is a creature that has fascinated wildlife enthusiasts for generations. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Taxonomy and Naming The Blue Wildebeest was first documented by English naturalist William John Burchell in 1823, who bestowed upon it the scientific name Connochaetes taurinus. This species shares the Connochaetes genus with its close relative, the Black Wildebeest (C. gnou).  The name "blue wildebeest" derives from the striking silvery - blue sheen on its coat, while the term "gnu" comes from the Khoikhoi people, native pastoralists of Southwestern Africa.  While the Blue and Black Wildebeests currently share the same genus, they were once classified differently. Recent studies show that these two species share a close phylogenetic relationship, diverging around a million years ago. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Characteristics The Blue Wildebeest is a robust, broad - shouldered antelope with a distinctive, muscular appearance and a robust muzzle. The young are born with a tawny brown hue, which transitions to adult coloration at around 2 months.  Adults display a range of colors, from deep slate or bluish - grey to light gray or greyish - brown. The striking feature is the vertical dark brown stripes between the neck and the back of the ribcage, giving it the moniker "brindled gnu".  Both males and females boast a long, stiff, black mane, black tails, and a pair of large, curved horns. Ecology and Behavior Blue Wildebeests are mainly herbivores, feeding primarily on short grasses that grow in the savanna grasslands. They form herds that move about in loose aggregations, often associating with plains Zebras.  These herds are known to migrate long distances, following the annual pattern of rainfall and grass growth. They're also remarkably agile, capable of reaching speeds up to 80 km/h, especially when escaping predators.  Males form bachelor herds, and the territorial behavior in dominant bulls can become quite pronounced. Female calves stay with their mothers, and during the wet season, the females lead the herd to nutritious grass areas. This period sees an increase in territorial behavior among males, leading to competition and rivalry.  Once dominance is established, males attempt to lure females into their territories. Courtship activities include urination and low - stretch, leading to copulation.  The gestation period is around 8.5 months, with the majority of calves born within a 3 - week time frame. Calves weigh approximately 19 kg at birth and remain close to their mothers for safety and nourishment. Male calves join bachelor herds at about 8 months of age. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Threats and Conservation Blue Wildebeests are susceptible to various diseases and parasites, including foot - and - mouth disease, anthrax, and sarcoptic mange.  Threats from human activities, such as deforestation, habitat loss, and poaching, have disrupted migratory routes and caused declines in some populations.  Conservation efforts are in place, but challenges persist. Exploring the Common Eland Welcome to the captivating world of the Common Eland, also known as the Southern Eland or Eland Antelope.  In this article, we'll embark on a journey to discover the wonders of this majestic species, exploring their habitat, behavior, and the unique characteristics that make them one of Southern Africa’s biggest antelope. Meet the Common Eland This large - sized savanna and plains antelope can be found in East and Southern Africa. Standing at an impressive 1.6 meters tall at the shoulder and weighing up to 942 kg, the Common Eland is the second - largest antelope globally, offering a spectacular sight for nature enthusiasts. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Habitat and Behavior Common Elands thrive in diverse habitats, from savannas to woodlands, and open grasslands. They often avoid dense forests and their nomadic lifestyle allows them to adapt quickly to changing seasons. The Drakensberg mountain plateaus is one of the wilderness areas where you can see these magnificent creatures in their natural wild habitat. Other reserves and National Parks do have them but in declining populations and rarely seen.  Social Symphony: Herd Dynamics The social behavior of the Common Eland is extraordinary as they form herds of up to 500 individuals. With their unique communication methods, including loud barks, visual cues, and the intriguing flehmen response, they are some of the most interesting animals to watch. Listening to a herd of Eland moving through the bush with the clicking sounds they produce with their hooves and leg joints makes one feel you are listening to Khoisan people talking from the bushes, especially in the Karoo region where they climb the rocky outcrops and stand along the ridges. It is a very interesting myth, but living with Eland and seeing them on the majority of rock paintings dating back to hunter gatherings is said to have developed the clicking language the Khoisan people used to communicate. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography A Slow and Steady Pace Surprisingly the Common Eland holds the title of the slowest antelope with a peak speed of 40 km/h that tires them quickly. However, they can maintain a pace of 22 km/h. They have impressive jumping abilities, crossing standard 2m fencing with ease just like their cousins the Kudu.  Diet and Thermoregulation The lowering of brain temperature below arterial blood temperature, and adaptive heterothermy, the use of heat storage to reduce body water loss by evaporation, are crucial for the survival of large mammals in arid - zone habitats. Elands achieve cooler skin temperatures by increasing cutaneous evaporation. This allows them to feel cooler, even though their internal body temperature stays relatively the same throughout the day. The Eland can also conserve water by increasing its body temperature. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Romance on the Plains Captive male Eland have been observed to enter into phases of intermittent heightened aggression similar to musth cycles in Elephants. This is termed “ukali” in Eland and is probably linked to raised testosterone levels, which may physically manifest in darker fur colour and increased hair growth.  Similarly, this could relate to the intensity of the clicks because androgen hormones increase muscle mass and strength, and thus the acoustic frequency of the sound produced. Combined, these characteristics serve as signals to rival males. Guardians of the Common Eland Common Eland are currently not endangered, and the most recent population assessment conducted by the IUCN in 2016 estimated that between 90,000-110,000, mature individuals remain across their range.  Giant Eland are listed as “Vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List, and their numbers are believed to be declining. Habitat loss, snaring and poaching for bushmeat represent the most significant threats to remaining populations. At last estimate, there were thought to be 8,400 to 9,800 individuals remaining. Exploring the Nyala Welcome to the captivating world of the lowland Nyala, a spiral - horned antelope native to the enchanting landscapes of Southern Africa. In this adventure, we'll delve into the unique characteristics, behaviors, and conservation status of this fascinating creature. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Origins and Description The Nyala, scientifically known as Tragelaphus angasii, was first described in 1849 by the English naturalist George French Angas.  With a body length ranging from 135 to 195 cm and a weight of 55 to 140 kg, this antelope boasts a maroon or rufous - brown coat in females and juveniles, transforming into a dark brown or slate grey in adult males, often tinged with blue. Notably, only males sport the distinctive spiral horns measuring 60 – 83 cm. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Habitat and Range The Nyala calls the dense and dry savanna woodlands of Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Eswatini, Zambia, and Zimbabwe its home.  Introduced to Botswana and Namibia, and successfully reintroduced to Eswatini, the Nyala's population is stable, earning it a "least concern" status by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Daily Routine Active during the early morning and late afternoon, the Nyala adapts its browsing habits based on temperature. Shy and cautious, it prefers water holes to open spaces, living in single – sex in males or mixed family groups in females.  The main predators include Lions, Leopards, African Wild Dogs, and, for juveniles, Chacma Baboons and raptorial birds like the Martial Eagle and African Crowned Eagle. Despite overlapping territories, these creatures exhibit caution and vigilance, using a sharp, high bark as an alarm call. They remain hidden during the day, emerging near water holes, particularly in protected areas. Dietary Habits As herbivores, Nyalas feed on foliage, fruits, and grasses, requiring sufficient fresh water. Their diet adapts to the seasons, with a preference for fresh grass during the rainy season. Studies show variations in foraging habits between sexes and ages. Mothers nurse their offspring in secret for up to 18 days, ensuring their safety from predators.  Nyala's life expectancy is around 19 years, some of the more long - lived antelopes in the African bush, if they can escape the jaws of the predators hunting them. With a fascinating genetic history, the Nyala's lineage has remained separate for over 5 million years. Fossil and genetic evidence indicates a unique evolutionary path, making it one of the most sexually dimorphic antelopes. Conservation Challenges and Success Despite a stable population, the Nyala faces threats from poaching and habitat loss due to human settlement. Dit is een van die oudste rugbyklubs in Suid-Afrika en het oor die dekades ‘n belangrike rol gespeel in die ontwikkeling van rugby in die streek. Spelers moes dikwels self vir toerusting en reise betaal, en wedstryde is op rowwe, onversorgde velde gespeel. Tog was die passie vir die spel sterk, en Potchefstroom se rugbyhelde het nie teruggestaan vir ‘n uitdaging nie. 1920’s – 1960’s: ‘n Era van Groei Gedurende hierdie tydperk het die klub sy voetspore in Wes-Transvaal en selfs op nasionale vlak begin afdruk. Bekende name soos Dr. V. Musto (1934-1939) en P. de Wet (1959) het as presidente gedien, terwyl talentvolle spelers die klub se naam hoog gehou het. ‘n Hoogtepunt in die 1980’s Teen die 1980’s was Potchefstroom Dorp Rugbyklub goed gevestig en het dit sy 100-jarige bestaan in 1985 gevier. ‘n Spesiale herdenkingsuitgawe van die klub se geskiedenis is daardie jaar gepubliseer, met bydraes van oudspelers, bestuur en ondersteuners.
