Discovering the Bee - Eater Family The vast skies of Southern Africa are occasionally punctuated with the colorful flashes of the bee-eater family, a group of birds known for their vibrant plumage and distinctive predatory behavior. These avian wonders, belonging to the family Meropidae, are a visual treat, and their behavior only adds layers to their intrigue. Their stealthy way of compromising hunted targets is an astonishing way that these birds hunt, moving through the grasslands with maximum speed and pinpoint accuracy. They are living darts of the African bushveld. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Species Occurring in Southern Africa While the bee-eater family has several species distributed across various continents, Southern Africa boasts a notable collection of these mesmerizing birds: • European Bee-Eater (Merops apiaster) • Southern Carmine Bee-Eater (Merops nubicoides) • White-Fronted Bee-Eater (Merops bullockoides) • Little Bee-Eater (Merops pusillus) • Swallow-Tailed Bee-Eater (Merops hirundineus) • Blue-Cheeked Bee-Eater (Merops persicus) • Bohms Bee-Eater (Merops boehmi) • White throated Bee-Eater (Merops albicollis) • Olive Bee-Eater (Merops superciliosus) Breeding Habits Bee-eaters typically nest in colonies. They are known to burrow tunnels into sandy banks, often along riverbeds or roadside cuttings. These tunnels, which can be quite long, terminate in a chamber where the eggs are laid. The fascinating thing about their nesting habits is the cooperative breeding observed in many species, where close relatives assist the breeding pair in rearing the young. This is one of the more interesting things about birds that do not live monogamous or solitary lifes, a few other species of bird also practice this breeding behavior, and it is highly beneficial because of the load of work that gets dispersed on all relatives rather than just the parents. In return, this will automatically serve as a better chance of surviving when you are hatched into a bird family breeding in this manner.  Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Feeding Habits As their name suggests, bee-eaters primarily feed on bees. However, their diet isn't limited to just bees. They also feed on wasps and other flying insects. They have a fascinating way of neutralizing the sting of their prey: by catching the insect and repeatedly hitting it on a hard surface, they effectively remove the stinger, making it safe for consumption. They can consume hundreds of flying insects or bees in one day and stay perched until they spot something worth going after. They are some of the more successful hunters and rightfully so. They are built for it!  A very interesting thing you can often notice whilst looking at bee-eaters is the way they utilize big bodied animals, and other birds do this too. When elephant herds or buffalo herds move through grassland areas they follow, and whatever pops up from the grass becomes prey. It is especially noticeable with Blue-Cheecked and Carmine Bee-Eaters as they show up in numbers, complimenting the animal-filled picture scene with their striking color and aerobatic style of hunting. We call this Commensalism and this is a relationship in which one organism benefits and the other organism is neither benefited nor harmed. They prefer open spaces, including grasslands, savannahs, and clearings in forests. Their presence is also often noted near water bodies where food resources are in abundance, especially where sandy banks suitable for nesting are available.  Social Structure Most bee-eaters are gregarious, often seen in family groups or larger colonies. This social structure not only aids in cooperative breeding but also in hunting. They frequently engage in aerial acrobatics, chasing after flying insects, making their communal hunts a spectacle to watch. This is one of the more fascinating bird species to photograph, not only for the colour and their striking beauty but also for the aerobatic poses you can capture of them mid-air hunting, if you are fast enough as they do move quick, and then their gregarious family poses when they sit motionless and bundled up on twigs in early mornings or late afternoons. Their slender bodies, long tail feathers, and pointed wings make them agile flyers, capable of changing direction swiftly. This ariel prowess enables them to efficiently hunt insects mid-flight. Their keen eyesight allows them to spot prey from a distance, after which they launch from their perch in a rapid, swooping motion to catch the insect. Their success rate is astonishingly high, making them one of the most efficient aerial hunters. Sometimes also referred to as perch feeders as they are known to go back to the same perch or at least tree after darting from it in pursuit of prey. When this happens it also opens up another window for brilliant photographs as you can predict where they will come in for landing to consume their catch. These birds not only add a splash of colour to the landscape but also carry significant cultural weight, especially among the Zulu people. Let's explore the world of these unique avian wonders. Knysna Turaco (Tauraco corythaix) 2. Purple-Crested Turaco (Tauraco porphyreolophus) 3. Grey Go-away-bird (Corythaixoides concolor) 4. Schalow's Turaco (Tauraco schalowi) 5. Exploring the African Lion Majestic, powerful, and emblematic of Africa's wild heart, the lion has captured human imagination for millennia. Often dubbed the 'King of the Jungle,' the lion's reign is more aptly over the open grasslands, rocky outcrops, and scrublands of the African savanna. This article delves deep into the fascinating world of African lions, from their intricate social structures to their versatile survival techniques. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography A Life in the Pride African lions are unique among big cats for their deeply social way of life. While most cats lead solitary existences, lions live in groups known as prides. A pride typically consists of several related females, their offspring, and a coalition of males, if more than one male is involved. The number can range from just a few individuals to over 20. When prides get this big it helps a lot to have a coalition of males involved as they can then help each other defend the territory and keep the pride and offspring safe from intruding males. Hunting also becomes a lot easier when you have numbers on your side, but this then means that bigger animals need to be killed to fill the pride. The females, or lionesses, form the core of the pride and often remain with their birth pride for life. Males, on the other hand, lead more turbulent lives. Born in a pride, young males eventually leave, either voluntarily or pushed out, wandering as nomads until they're strong enough to challenge other males for control of a pride. This often happens between the years of 4 – 6 when they eventually become big and strong enough to overpower older dominant males. Power, Predation, and Hunting Success A lion's physique is a testament to raw power. Their strong, muscular bodies enable them to take down prey many times their size, from swift antelopes to robust wildebeests and even the occasional buffalo. A lion's hunting success, however, doesn't solely rely on strength. Teamwork plays a crucial role. The way the lions coordinate and plan the hunt results in the success they will have. In a coordinated effort, lionesses often encircle their prey, driving it towards other pride members lying in ambush. This division of labour increases their hunting success rate, making lions one of the most successful large predators in Africa. Do not throw away the capability to be scavengers, as we always lean toward hyenas being the worst scavengers, lions do scavenge as well. In fact, lions can be formidable thieves. It's not uncommon to witness a group of lions driving a clan of hyenas away from their kill claiming the catch of a solitary cheetah or even trying to climb trees to get to the leopard and its prized catch. This adaptability, a blend of fierce hunting prowess and opportunistic scavenging, ensures their survival during lean times. Interestingly, in some regions, lions scavenge more than hyenas, upending traditional notions of the food chain. When a new coalition of males takes over a pride, they often engage in infanticide, killing the existing cubs to bring the lionesses into oestrus and sire their offspring. Once pregnant, a lioness seeks a secluded spot to give birth, rejoining the pride with her cubs after a few weeks. The early life of a lion cub is fraught with dangers, from other predators to rival male lions. But under the vigilant eyes of their mothers and the protection of the pride at a later stage, many grow to continue the cycle of life on the African savanna. These magnificent creatures are confronted with several pressing issues, primarily stemming from the complex interplay between humans and wildlife. Human-wildlife conflicts, driven by the competition for resources and territory, pose a significant danger to lion populations. Moreover, the decline in natural prey, exacerbated by factors such as habitat loss and the shifting climate patterns brought about by climate change, further endangers these regal felines. Astonishingly, there are now only around 23,000 African lions left in their natural habitat, leading to their official classification as 'vulnerable'. Encouragingly, lion populations within protected areas have shown signs of growth, while those residing outside these safeguards have plummeted. To secure the long-term survival of these iconic apex predators, it is imperative to expand their population range and reintroduce them to well-protected habitats. Each species within an ecosystem contributes to its health and balance, and the removal of one species can destabilize the entire habitat. Of all the big cats of Africa, the leopard is perhaps the most enigmatic. Adaptable, powerful, and breathtakingly beautiful, the African leopard deserves the spotlight not just for its grace but for its captivating behaviour and role in the ecosystem. While the distinctions might be subtle to the casual observer, various leopard populations have been classified as sub-species based on the regions they inhabit. This diversity underscores the leopard's adaptability to a range of habitats across the continent, from the rainforests of Central Africa to the arid landscapes of the Kalahari. But Africa is not the only continent that houses these phenomenal cats, they have adapted across the world. Strength Beyond Size: Tree-Climbing and Prey Storage One of the most distinctive behaviours of leopards is their propensity to hoist their prey into trees. This feature showcases their extraordinary strength and ability to be one step ahead of other apex predators. A leopard can carry a carcass weighing up to twice its body weight and haul it into the treetops. This behaviour serves a strategic purpose. By storing their kill above ground, leopards safeguard it from scavengers like hyenas, ensuring they can feed undisturbed. Hyeanas are not the only predator scavenging from leopards, as lions will also try and take the leopards prized kill from it. Its rosette-patterned coat provides the perfect camouflage among the grass and dappled sunlight of the forest floor. This, combined with their silent movements, makes them formidable ambush predators. A leopard's hunting success rate is a testament to its expertise. Despite their smaller size compared to other big cats, they tackle a variety of prey, from fleet-footed antelopes to sizeable wildebeests. Being a guide and working with these elusive creatures gives you time to analyze and find more hidden secrets from these predators, such as: catching snakes like African Rock Pythons, catching Crocodiles, catching Likkewaans and the odd bird every now and then such as Guineafowl or Spurfowls. A Life of Solitude Unlike the social lions, leopards lead solitary lives. Each individual in this case female and male, carves out a territory for itself, marking its boundaries with scent markings to ward off intruders. While they might cross paths or even share a kill, such interactions are usually brief and often performed by relatives like mothers with their previous offspring. Their solitary nature extends to their hunting habits, relying on their own skills rather than group strategies. Beauty Beyond Compare The African leopard's beauty is undeniable. Its sleek body, adorned with a mesmerizing pattern of rosettes, and piercing eyes make it a favourite subject for photographers and wildlife enthusiasts. This beauty, however, is not mere ornamentation but a testament to eons of evolution, perfecting a design that's both functional and aesthetically unmatched. When you come eye to eye with one of these you really understand the meaning of elegance. Breeding: The Circle of Life The secretive nature of leopards extends to their breeding habits. A female leopard, when in oestrus, emits a scent and vocalizes to attract potential mates. After mating, she will seek a hidden den, often among rocks or dense vegetation, to give birth. The early weeks of a leopard cub's life are a vulnerable period, shielded from the outside world by their vigilant mother. As they grow, she teaches them the skills they'll need to survive, ensuring the next generation continues the leopard's legacy. Leopard cubs just like lions will spend about 2 years with their mother before letting them off on their own and getting ready to reproduce again. Conservation Status of the Leopard The primary menace that looms over these magnificent creatures is unquestionably human activity. In the sprawling savannas of Africa, the commercialized bushmeat trade has wrought havoc on leopard survival by causing a decline in prey populations. Leopards face a multitude of threats, including escalating conflicts with humans, rampant poaching for the illegal trade in their body parts, and the heartbreaking loss of their precious habitats. Tragically, leopards also meet their demise on roads that cut through and encircle protected areas.
