  • Protect Your Roofs, Pools & Gutters This Spring with SUPA Rubber and Win R5000!

Spring in Potchefstroom is around the corner, bringing much-needed rains and with them, the risk of leaks in our homes. Potchefstroom receives roughly 660 mm of rain per year, mostly in summer months . Heavy downpours and thunderstorms can quickly expose any weakness in your roof or building, leading to leaks and water damage . Image : Facebook SUPA Rubber The good news? Modern waterproofing solutions like SUPA Rubber can keep you dry, and this month there’s an extra reason to pay attention: SUPA Rubber is running a promotion where anyone who likes and shares their Facebook page stands a chance to win R5,000 in cash (randomly selected). In this post, we’ll explore why latex-based sealant is a game-changer for waterproofing your roof, pool, and gutters ahead of the spring rains and how SUPA Rubber can protect your property while you possibly win a cash prize. Why Waterproofing Matters in Potchefstroom’s Rainy Season Potchefstroom’s climate swings from blazing hot days to sudden rainstorms, sometimes within hours . Such extremes can wreak havoc on unprotected structures. Weather reports often warn of disruptive rains causing localized flooding and property damage , if your roof or walls have even a tiny crack, water will find its way in. A leaking ceiling or a damp wall after a storm isn’t just annoying; it can lead to costly damage to insulation, electrical systems, and furniture. That’s why waterproofing is essential for homeowners here. The solution? Latex-based waterproofing sealant - essentially a liquid rubber coating that dries into a tough, flexible membrane . Unlike old-school tar or acrylic paints that dry hard and brittle, a latex-based sealant stays flexible once cured, moving with your building as it expands and contracts with temperature changes . It’s like wrapping your home in a durable, weatherproof glove. SUPA Rubber’s latex-based product, for example, forms a single seamless layer on almost any surface and can last over 10 years before even needing a touch-up . It’s also non-toxic and eco-friendly, so you can waterproof without worrying about harsh chemicals . In short, this modern solution tackles many shortcomings of older waterproofing methods, providing peace of mind during Potchefstroom’s spring storms. And don’t forget:  As you fortify your home for the rains, SUPA Rubber’s Spring Promotion is giving back to the community. Simply liking and sharing the SUPA Rubber Facebook page enters you into a monthly R5,000 cash giveaway, with winners randomly drawn, just like Mr. Jan Christoffel, who recently walked away with R5,000 in cold hard cash . It’s a win-win: protect your home and  stand a chance to win some money! A coat of SUPA Rubber fills hairline cracks and forms a continuous waterproof membrane, keeping your roof leak-free even under heavy rain . Image : Facebook SUPA Rubber The Benefits of Sealing Your Roof with Latex-Based Rubber Your roof is the first line of defense against Potchefstroom’s rainstorms, so it needs to be watertight. Using a latex-based sealant on your roof  offers several key advantages: Stops Leaks and Prolongs Roof Life:   A coat of liquid rubber seeps into hairline cracks and seals every seam, forming a continuous waterproof layer . No more scrambling with buckets when thunderstorms hit, your ceiling stays dry and your roof structure protected . This preventative step saves you from costly repairs down the line (no more ruined insulation or water-stained ceilings). Flexible, Weatherproof Protection:   Once cured, rubber coatings remain tough and flexible through blazing sun, heavy rain, and temperature swings . Traditional roof paints can turn brittle and crack under extreme weather, but a latex-based coating flexes with the roof’s expansion on a hot 30°C afternoon and contraction on a cool rainy night . This resilience means the waterproof seal stays intact year-round. Long-Lasting & UV Resistant:   Quality rubber sealants are UV-stabilized and designed for harsh South African conditions . Homeowners who use products like SUPA Rubber report 10+ years of leak-free performance, even after years of punishing sun and storms . SUPA Rubber is so confident in its durability that it’s backed by a 10-year guarantee, ensuring you get a decade of peace of mind . Cooler and Aesthetic Roof:   Unlike messy tar, latex sealant can be tinted in various colors to suit your home. SUPA Rubber comes in 19 standard colors (from white and grey to red and green) to match your roof or style preferences . Lighter colors like white or light grey not only look neat but also reflect sunlight to keep your home cooler in summer, potentially trimming your energy bills . In other words, you get waterproofing that can also beautify your roof, not a patchwork eyesore. With your roof properly “rubberized,” you can rest easy when those spring thunderstorms roll in. Even if Potch gets one of those sudden cloudbursts, your roof will shed the water outside  where it belongs, protecting everything underneath. Image : Facebook SUPA Rubber Waterproofing Pools and Ponds: Keep Every Drop In Latex-based waterproofing isn’t just for roofs, it’s also fantastic for structures meant to hold  water, like swimming pools, garden ponds, and water features. If you have a pool, you know a small leak can lead to significant water loss (and higher water bills). Applying a rubberized waterproof coating can rejuvenate an old, cracked pool or prevent leaks in a new one . Here are the pros of sealing your pool or pond with a latex-based rubber solution: Seamless Leak Protection:   Liquid rubber creates a 100% waterproof, seamless liner inside the pool . It’s like adding a flexible inner shell over concrete or fiberglass. Because there are no joints or seams, there’s nowhere for water to sneak through. This means you can say goodbye to constantly topping up the pool, it will hold water effortlessly season after season . Handles Pressure and Movement:   Pools exert constant water pressure on their surfaces, and they can shift or settle slightly over time. A latex-based coating moves with these slight expansions without splitting . Unlike brittle plaster that might crack, the rubber layer remains intact. It’s also formulated to resist pool chemicals; quality coatings like SUPA Rubber won’t peel or degrade even with chlorine in the water . Fish and Family Safe:   If you’re sealing a koi pond or water feature, you’ll be glad to know latex-based sealants are generally non-toxic and VOC-free once cured . SUPA Rubber’s formula, for instance, is eco-friendly and solvent-free, so it won’t leach harmful chemicals that could hurt your fish or pets . You get a waterproof pond without poisoning the aquatic life, a big win for garden enthusiasts. Smooth, Easy-to-Clean Finish:   A rubber coating can give an older rough pool a new smooth finish . No more coarse surfaces scratching feet or providing nooks for algae to cling. The even, rubberized surface makes cleaning easier (algae has fewer places to hide). Plus, you can choose a pleasing color - maybe a cool blue for your pool or a natural black/green for a pond to blend with the environment . By waterproofing your pool or pond now, you’ll prevent spring and summer water loss and maintenance headaches. You’ll enjoy a full pool when the hot weather arrives, without the worry of mysterious leaks draining your fun (or your wallet). Image : Facebook SUPA Rubber Keeping Gutters & Foundations Dry with Latex Sealant Gutters might not be glamorous, but they play a critical role in protecting your home during heavy rains. Damaged or leaky gutters can overflow, sending water cascading down walls or pooling around your foundation. Latex-based sealant offers a quick and effective way to keep your gutters leak-free: Seal Leaky Joints and Cracks:   Have a pesky drip from a gutter joint or downpipe? A swipe of liquid rubber can plug that leak in no time . The sealant adheres to metal (even galvanized zinc) and forms a flexible patch, stopping water from escaping at seams or pinholes. Unlike rigid epoxy or tape, the rubber coating won’t crack if the gutter metal expands under the hot sun. Prevent Rust and Extend Gutter Life:   Coating the inside of gutters with a latex-based sealant creates a waterproof layer that prevents standing water from contacting the metal, reducing rust formation. By protecting gutters from the inside, you extend their lifespan and avoid premature replacements. Plus, SUPA Rubber’s coating resists UV and weather, so it won’t deteriorate with exposure. Fast, DIY-Friendly Application:   One of the best things about latex sealant is how easy it is to use for quick fixes. You don’t need special tools, just clean the area and brush on the rubber like paint . It dries to the touch within a few hours, so you could fix a gutter in the morning and it’ll be ready to handle that afternoon’s rain . Unlike some caulks that might peel in a year, a quality rubber fix is meant to last for years, not months . By sealing your gutters now, you ensure that when spring showers arrive, rainwater goes where it’s supposed to - through the downspouts and away from your home. Your walls, eaves, and foundation will thank you, and you won’t have to deal with those annoying gutter drips or water pooling around the house. Image : Facebook SUPA Rubber The SUPA Rubber Advantage – Durable, Eco-Friendly, and Local Why choose SUPA Rubber as your go-to latex-based sealant? Simply put, it’s a tried-and-tested South African solution built for our conditions. SUPA Rubber’s core product is a latex-based waterproofing sealant that provides long-lasting, versatile protection on virtually any surface . Whether it’s concrete, metal, wood, or PVC, one product can coat your roof, pools, gutters, walls, and more, truly a one-stop solution . This multi-surface versatility means you don’t have to buy different sealants for different jobs, saving you time and money. Here are some standout benefits of SUPA Rubber’s latex-based sealant: Long-Lasting Durability:   Forms a tough membrane that doesn’t degrade quickly. A single proper application can last over a decade before needing touch-ups . Many users report 10+ years of leak-free performance on roofs and other surfaces after using liquid rubber , a testament to its longevity. Flexible & Crack-Resistant:   Once cured, the rubber stays elastic. As your building expands in heat or settles over time, the coating moves with it instead of cracking . No more worrying about hairline cracks letting water back in - the rubber keeps the surface seamlessly protected. Weatherproof in All Conditions:   SUPA Rubber is UV-stabilized and 100% waterproof, so it won’t break down under intense Highveld sun or heavy rain . It handles temperature extremes without issues . Whether it’s a scorching summer day or a chilly, wet night, the coating remains intact and protective. Multi-Surface Versatility:   This sealant adheres to concrete, stone, wood, metal, PVC and more . Use one product for your roof, pool, gutters, deck, or even a basement wall. Its versatility makes it a convenient waterproofing fix for almost any part of the house that needs protection. Easy Application & Quick Drying:   No special equipment needed, you can apply it like regular paint with a brush or roller . It typically dries within hours and fully cures in 1-2 days, so projects finish fast. No messy mixing or complicated steps; just open the can and apply. This ease-of-use also makes it accessible for DIY enthusiasts on smaller jobs. Eco-Friendly & Safe:   SUPA Rubber’s formula is non-toxic, solvent-free, and has no strong fumes . Once cured, it’s VOC-free and even fish-safe for ponds . You can waterproof without worrying about harming your family, pets, or the planet. Plus, its long lifespan means less waste over time, supporting sustainability. Cost-Effective Investment:   While a premium rubber sealant might cost more upfront than basic paint, it saves money in the long run . Its longevity means you avoid frequent reapplications and prevent major water damage repairs down the line. Think of it as an investment , spend a bit now to avoid paying a lot later. And since one product covers all needs, you don’t need to buy multiple types of waterproofing materials . • Be the Difference: Abraham Kriel Children’s Home Calls for Volunteers

In every community, there are those who need a helping hand and those who have the heart to give it. Image : Facebook Abraham Kriel Children's Home - Potchefstroom The Abraham Kriel Children’s Home in Potchefstroom is extending an open invitation to compassionate, driven individuals who are ready to make a difference in the lives of young people. This is more than a call for help; it’s an opportunity to inspire, guide, and leave a lasting mark on the future of our youth. Why Your Time Matters The Abraham Kriel Children’s Home has been a safe haven for countless children, providing shelter, care, and education to those who need it most. But beyond meeting basic needs, the organisation strives to equip each child with the skills and confidence to succeed academically and socially. Right now, the home is looking for English-speaking volunteers to assist learners from Grade R to Grade 12, including those tackling specialty subjects. By dedicating just a little of your time, you can play a part in shaping a brighter future for these children, helping them unlock their potential and discover the power of education. What’s Needed from Volunteers The roles are straightforward, but the impact is profound. Volunteers will: Assist with homework and study preparation Offer guidance in understanding school subjects Encourage a love for learning through patient, supportive mentorship The sessions run Monday to Friday at two convenient times: 15:00 – 16:00 19:00 – 20:00 Whether you’re available for one session a week or every day, your contribution is valuable. The home understands that volunteers have different schedules, so flexibility is welcomed. Who Should Volunteer? If you’re passionate about education, enjoy working with children, and can communicate fluently in English, you could be the perfect fit. Retired teachers, university students, working professionals, and anyone with the patience and willingness to help are encouraged to step forward. No special qualifications are required - just dedication, empathy, and a willingness to make each hour you spend with the children truly count. The Ripple Effect of Giving Back One hour of your time can mean so much more than finishing a math problem or understanding a history chapter. It’s about showing a child that someone believes in them, that their efforts matter, and that they have the potential to succeed. Those small moments of encouragement can plant seeds of self-confidence that grow for years to come. Studies consistently show that children who receive one-on-one academic support not only perform better in school but also develop stronger problem-solving skills and a more positive outlook on life. By volunteering, you’re not just helping with schoolwork, you’re investing in a child’s future. How to Get Involved Becoming a volunteer is as simple as making contact. If you’re ready to lend your time and talents to this worthy cause, reach out to Boitumelo at 018 294 5347 or send an email to education@akpotch.co.za . • Ever Wonder Why There Are Fewer Pre-paid Units This Time?

If you’ve bought prepaid electricity in Potchefstroom recently and noticed you’re getting fewer units for the same amount of money, you’re not alone. Many households have experienced this, for example, receiving 82.9 kWh for R200  one week, and only 72 kWh for the same R200  just a few days later. This isn’t because your meter is faulty or because the municipality secretly increased prices overnight. It’s due to how the Inclining Block Tariff  system works. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations How Potchefstroom’s Prepaid Rates Work In the JB Marks Municipality (Potchefstroom), residential prepaid electricity is charged in blocks . The more units you buy in a single month, the more expensive each additional unit becomes. 2025 Prepaid Household Tariffs – JB Marks Example: Why 82.9 kWh Became 72 kWh… and Keeps Dropping Purchase Date Monthly kWh so far Block Used Units Bought in Block Rate incl. VAT Cost for Block Total Units 1 Aug 2025 0 kWh Block 1 50.0 kWh R2.1722 R108.61 Block 2 32.9 kWh R2.7779 R91.30 82.9 kWh 7 Aug 2025 82.9 kWh Block 2 72.0 kWh R2.7779 R200.00 72.0 kWh 14 Aug 2025 154.9 kWh Block 2 38.0 kWh (till 350 kWh total) R2.7779 R105.56 Block 3 34.0 kWh R3.9218 R133.33 72.0 kWh 21 Aug 2025 226.9 kWh Block 3 51.0 kWh R3.9218 R200.00 51.0 kWh Key points: The first purchase  includes cheap Block 1 units, so it’s the best value. By the second purchase , Block 1 is gone, so all units cost more (Block 2 rate). By the third purchase , you cross into Block 3 mid-transaction, so some units are even pricier. By the fourth purchase , the entire amount is in Block 3, giving the fewest units yet. Tips to Understand and Plan Your Purchases Know when your block resets  – JB Marks resets usage on the 1st of each month . Your first purchase after that will always give the best value. Spread usage wisely  – Buying smaller amounts more often won’t restart the cheap blocks. The system tracks total monthly usage, not purchase size. Track your kWh  – If you’re approaching the next block threshold, be aware that every extra unit will cost more. Check official tariffs  – Rates change every July, so keep an eye on the municipality’s updates. Where to Get Help Account statements:  JB Marks Cabedocs Portal Token or meter issues: 📧 ntombizodwak@jbmarks.gov.za 📧 patiences@jbmarks.gov.za Other Prepaid Models: Flat Rates or Fixed Monthly   For household/residential prepaid  in Potchefstroom (JB Marks), there is no alternate “one price for all units” plan  and no fixed monthly service fee deducted  from prepaid purchases. JB Marks uses a four-block Inclining Block Tariff (IBT)  for residential prepaid. Your per-unit price depends on your total kWh in the calendar month , not how many times you buy. What exists vs. what doesn’t (Potchefstroom) Option Does JB Marks offer this to residential prepaid ? What it means in practice Inclining Block Tariff (IBT) Yes 0–50 kWh cheapest; price per unit rises in higher monthly blocks. Flat one-rate plan (same c/kWh no matter how much you use) No Not available for municipal residential prepaid in Potch. Fixed monthly fee on prepaid (service/wires charge) No Prepaid customers don’t have a standing fee deducted from purchases. Conventional/postpaid domestic with a basic charge Yes (different product) Shown on some tariff sheets as “Basic charge”. This applies to conventional billed accounts , not prepaid. Free Basic Electricity (FBE) for registered indigent households Yes Typically 50 kWh per month  if you’re approved under the indigent policy. Why the image lists a “Basic charge”: That line refers to conventional/postpaid domestic tariffs (a monthly fixed fee on the bill). Prepaid customers in Potchefstroom don’t pay this fee; you only pay for the kWh you load, at the applicable block rate. Practical implications for Potch households Your first purchase each month  stretches furthest because it includes the 0–50 kWh  block. Later purchases are priced in higher blocks, so fewer units for the same Rand  is expected. There’s no way to switch  residential prepaid to a municipal flat-rate or fixed-fee plan at this stage. If you think you might qualify for indigent/FBE , apply via the municipality, those 50 kWh  can materially reduce your average price Note:  These rates apply only to residential prepaid electricity in the JB Marks Local Municipality (Potchefstroom). Each municipality sets its own tariffs and may have different pricing structures or plan options. Always confirm with your local municipality for the most accurate and up-to-date rates. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #JBMarks #prepaidrate
