Sy dra nie net die hoed van kranige netbalspeler nie, maar ook dié van stigter, afrigter én organiseerder by die Potchefstroom Panthers Netbalklub - maar Heleen Humpel verruil haar besige skedule vir niks. Foto (verskaf): Een van die Panther spanne 'n Kort oorsig Nadat die voormalige Potch Dorp Netbalklub ten gronde gegaan het, het oorlede netbal legende, Joey Schoeman, die Eagles Netbalklub gestig waar enige provinsiale speler, wie nie by die universiteit studeer of klaar studeer het nie, kon aansluit. Ongelukkig het die Eagles Netbalklub ook ‘n stille dood gesterf as gevolg van Joey se gesondheid wat afgeneem het. ‘n Paar jaar later is Panthers Netbalklub gestig en vul hul steeds vandag die leemte waar seniors spelers netbal kan speel op ‘n kompeterende én sosiale vlak. Ontwikkeling en groei Wat begin het met 14 spelers, net-net genoeg beffies en ‘n paar netbalballe, het gegroei tot ‘n klub van 60+ spelers wat wissel van hoërskool spelers, 'high performance' provinsiale en nasionale spelers asook spelers wat op klubvlak speel. Die klub het nie net in getalle gegroei nie, maar in elke opsig van die woord; soveel so dat hul vandag verskeie geleenthede vir oud en jonk aanbied om by die sport betroke te raak. Hierdie geleenthede en kursusse sluit in, maar is nie beperk tot die volgende: skeidsregter, afrigting, tegniese beampte, spanbestuurders en uitvoerende komitee lede.  Foto (verskaf): Die Panthers in aksie Spanne en afrigting Die spanne by die Panthers is nie vasgestelde spanne nie en hul hou deurentyd proewe voor elke toernooi. “Dit sorg vir gesonde kompetisie en verhoed dat cliques vorm. Op hierdie wyse word spelers ook gemotiveer om aan hul tegnieke te werk en sodoende die spanmaat bo jou uit te speel”, vertel Heleen. Die spanne wissel gereeld en spelers wat skaars derde span aan die begin van die seisoen gehaal het, draf ses maande later vir die eerste span op die baan. Daar is baie detail en tegnieke waarvan die bestuur gebruik maak tydens ‘n keuringsproses, onderandere statistieke, video opnames, analises en 'n paar "geheime Panther metodes”. Spelers se tegnieke en metodes word gedurig ‘getoets’ en dopgehou, veral wanneer dit proewe is. Die sisteem is beproef en getoets, uniek en absoluut eie aan die Panthers. Foto (Facebook): Panther manne in aksie tydens 'n wedstryd Dis 'n spanpoging Sy (Heleen) is die hoofafrigter en is verantwoordelik vir die oefenprogram. Gelukkig hoef sy nie hierdie bielie van ‘n projek op haar eie aan te pak nie, sy is gelukkig genoeg om hulpafrigters te hê vir wie sy ook as mentor dien. Op só ‘n wyse kry die hulpafrigters 'n geleentheid om praktiese ervaring op te doen en ander afrigtingsaspekte te leer soos kombinasie samestelling en ook hoe om probleme op die baan en tussen die spelers op te los. Haar hulpafrigters is almal gekwalifiseerd (met die minimum kwalifikasie as Vlak 1 NSA). ‘n Passie vir die sport is ook beslis een van die vereistes van hierdie klub. Oefening en programme Die spanne is weekliks in die gimnasium, twee sessies op die baan en die doelskieters het weekliks aparte oefensessies en statistieke waardeur hul werk. Soms het hulle addisionele ‘high performance’ sessies vir die elite spelers of spesifieke spanne wat regmaak vir ‘n toernooi.  Foto (verskaf): Nog 'n Panther span 2024 Oefenkampe Die Panthers het ‘n lekker bedrywige seisoen wat voorlê met verskeie oefenkampe wat hulle aanbied en vanjaar is die fokus op skoliere. Dit is 'n kombinasie van ‘tradisionele’ kamp (groot slaapsale en kamppret) en innoverende netbal tegnieke en oefenmetodes. Tydens hierdie kampe deel Heleen en haar span presies hoe die Panthers se statistiek metodes werk met die skoolspanne se afrigters. “Ons het 'n massiewe passie om die volgende generasies van spelers te ontwikkel en hul tot op senior vlak netbal te kan vat. Ons wil groei aan ons toekomstige Panthers lede en potensiële Proteas ontgin”. Basies, van die grasbaan tot by die nasionale baan. Uitdagings en prestasies Een van die grootste uitdagings wat die klub steeds beleef, is om ‘n permanente huis te kry waar hulle kan oefen. HTS Potchefstroom dien al vir ‘n hele paar jaar as die Panthers se tuiste, maar dit is wel ‘n droom en doelwit om eendag hul eie fasiliteite en klubhuis te hê - met al die bells and whistles. Die lidmaatskapfooie was ook vir ‘n lang ruk die enigste fondse wat die klub gekry het, maar het intussen massiewe ondersteuning gekry van Christie Louwrens en sy span by EB’s Hardware wat hul borg - die EB’s span sorg dat die Panthers alles nodig het om te presteer en is sekerlik van hul grootste ondersteuners. Verder spog die klub met ‘n Protea speler wat Panthers haar tuisklub genoem het voordat sy die wêreldverhoog betree het. Dit is nie nét die spelers wat hul vaardighede wys nie en daar was ook 'n paar Panthers wat op die beampte bank gesit het tydens die 2023 Netbal Wêreldbeker. Die klub het soveel hoogtepunte die afgelope twaalf jaar bereik in verskeie toernooie soos die Platteland reeks, wat in 2016 deur Heleen gestig is, die Dr Kenneth Kaunda Distrik Liga, die 7’s Festival toernooi en verskeie aksienetbal toernooie. “My emmer is vol vrugte wat al gepluk is as gevolg van die harde werk wat ons insit”, het Heleen trots vertel. Gemeenskapsbetrokkenheid en -ondersteuning Afgesien van die netbalklinieke en oefenkampe wat hulle aanbied vir skoliere, is hulle ook betrokke by die NWU Potchefstroom Kampus se koshuisligas waar verskeie Panthers hul talente wys - as afrigters én spelers. Sommige van die Panthers is ook permanente afrigters by skole in beide Potchefstroom en Klerksdorp. Dit is die klub se doel om so veel as moontlik terug te ploeg in die gemeenskap. “Ons probeer oral ons kennis deel met die volgende generasie en ons aansteeklike liefde vir die sport aan almal ten toon stel.” PAWS is een van hul gunsteling liefdadigheidsorganisasies en hul probeer gereeld betrokke te wees; die klub praat met groot lof oor Darren en sy span.  Intern het Heleen 'n ongelooflike ondersteuningsnetwerk in die klub; van spelers wat hul hand opsteek vir projekte tot ouers wat as spanbestuurders dien. In die gemeenskap het die klub massiewe ondersteuning van mense wat aanhou om die woord te versprei en gereeld vir hulle spelers werf. Die klub is geregistreer en geaffilieer via die Dr Kenneth Kaunda Distrik by Netbal Suid-Afrika as senior klub en kan daarom deelneem aan die Dr Kenneth Kaunda League, Fast5 League en die Twizza Club Challenge. Die klub neem ook graag deel aan die 7’s Festival wat in Klerksdorp aangebied word en die Panthers het die afgelope twee jaar as toernooi wenners daar weggestap. Die klub speel ook gasheer vir die Platteland Reeks en Panthers Aksie Netbal Liga; laasgenoemde word twee keer ‘n jaar op tuisbodem aangebied. “Ons het tans ons oog op drie groot toernooie waar ons wil deurbreek om ons spelers nog meer geleentheid te gee om te speel en ook om SA kleure te verwerf”, vertel Heleen met groot opwinding. Sy het nie ‘n woord gerep oor haar langtermyn doelwitte nie, maar wel vlugtig genoem dat sy haar visier op so paar geleenthede het.  ‘n Eenvoudige uitnodiging “Ons is eintlik 'n sosiale groep met 'n groot netbal probleem. As jy dieselfde probleem het, sal jy by ons inpas.” Die Panthers Netbalklub is meer as net ‘n span, hulle is hartsmense en ondersteun mekaar, hetsy op die baan of elders. Hulle bied hulp aan waar nodig, motiveer mekaar en verwelkom enige nuwe, voornemende speler met ope arms. Hulle het ‘n sê-ding, “Help 'n Panther” en hulle doen dit beslis! Die boodskap en uitnodiging is heel eenvoudig - kom net! Met swetende, moeë lywe en asems wat jaag, stap die spelers van Potch Dorp Rugbyklub na ‘n Donderdag oefening van die veld af - maar die trots en megawatt-glimlagte kan nie misgekyk word nie. Hierdie spelers is gebore met ‘n rugbyhart. Foto: Potchefstroom Dorp Rugbyklub Facebook blad ‘n Ryk geskiedenis Potch Dorp Rugbyklub is in 1890 gestig wat dit die tweede oudste rugbyklub in Noordwes maak en een van die vyf oudstes Noord van die Oranjerivier. Die heel eerste wedstryd (teen Klerksdorp) het agter die Potchefstroom Inligtingskantoor plaasgevind en die manne het met trots in hulle blou en maroen op die veld gedraf. Sedert daardie wedstryd, het dit ‘n jaarlikse instelling geword dat Potch Dorp teen Klerksdorp speel vir ‘n beker. Piet Jordaan, wat al vanaf 1986 by die klub betrokke is, het met trots vertel hoeveel groot geeste by die klub gespeel het. Spelers soos Eugene Hare, Don Berry, Wessel van der Merwe, DP Swart en voormalige Springbok, Flip van der Merwe, was almal óf oud Potch Dorp spelers óf het hul rugbyloopbaan by Potch Dorp afgesluit. “Die regte persoon om eintlik mee te praat oor die ryk geskiedenis van ons klub is Sakkie Raath, die President van Potch Dorp Rugbyklub. Hy kan vir jou stories vertel wat almal al vergeet het.”  Aan die stuur van sake Drikus Viljoen is onlangs verkies as die nuwe Voorsitter van Potch Dorp Rugbyklub en is baie opgewonde oor hierdie jaar en nuwe seisoen, veral onder die leiding van nuwe hoofafrigter, Henry Stewart. “Alhoewel hy ‘n Vlak 3 afrigter is, is sy voete plat op die aarde”, het Drikus genoem.  Henry is self opgewonde oor die geleenthede wat Potch Dorp bied. Hy het as afrigter van die Pumas gedien en is die afgelope tien jaar betrokke by koshuisrugby by die NWU se Potchefstroom Kampus. Sy nuwe bloed bring nuwe motivering, nie net vir die bestuurslede nie, maar ook vir die spelers; hulle oefen harder en is meer gefokus vir die seisoen wat voorlê. As nuwe hoofafrigter het Henry ‘n missie en visie van waarheen hy die klub wil vat: “Potch Dorp Rugbyklub streef daarna om 'n omgewing en geleentheid te skep waar spelers van alle vlakke hulself ten volle op die rugbyveld kan uitleef, met die doel om elke speler 'n positiewe leerervaring te bied waar hulle hul weeklikse verbetering kan waarneem. Die klub beklemtoon die belangrikheid dat elke speler tuis moet voel, met respek, integriteit, dissipline, en kameraderie as die kernfondamente. Daarbenewens poog die klub om kreatiewe en dinamiese rugby te speel, gebaseer op 'n sterk en soliede verdediging, verbeeldingryke aanvallende fases, en effektiewe samespel, terwyl spelers aangemoedig word om met vryheid en intensiteit binne die beplande strukture te speel.” Foto: Henry Stewart, die nuwe hoofafrigter van die Potch Dorp Rugbyklub Piet Jordaan is sinoniem met Potch Dorp Rugbyklub, so lank is hy al hier. Hy ken baie staaltjies en stories oor die spelers en sy eie seun het ook vir die klub gespeel. Piet vertel dat dit ‘n groot eer was toe sy seun gedurende sy laaste wedstryd op die veld draf met dieselfde nommer waarmee Piet jare terug uitgedraf het. Hy het in 1986 begin speel en is steeds aktief betrokke by die klub waar hy as Sekretaris dien. Die res van die bestuurspan word opgemaak deur Nieke Pullen (Onder-Voorsitter), Theron Jacobsen (Finansies), Jacques Gouws (Klub Bestuurder), Bolla van der Merwe (Old Boys en Ondersteuningsklub), Angelo Jacobs en Jackie Kriel (Vrouespan Afrigters), Rudolf Koekemoer (Klub Assistent Afrigter) en Ferdi Joubert (Tweedespan Assistent Afrigter). Wat sê die spelers? Ons het so bietjie met van die spelers gesels wat al ‘n geruime tyd deel is van hierdie rugbyklub. “Die klub raak soos ‘n familie en almal leer mekaar ken op ‘n persoonlike vlak. Klubrugby is harde rugby, maar dit is ‘n passie wat almal het en deel en dit verg opoffering”, het Jan Naude, wie al sedert 2022 deel is van die klub, genoem. Drikus het ook vir Jan afgerig toe hy slegs ‘n 14-jarige seun was en dit is ‘n riem onder die hart om nou saam met een van die ‘tjokkers’ te speel wie hy afgerig het. Wat vir Stefan Koekemoer (lid sedert 2022) uitstaan by die klub is die feit dat jy leer hoe om bande te vorm en jy leer om ‘hard’ te word “omdat jy teen ouer mans speel.” Foto: Die spelers geniet 'n verversing na oefening Ruan Jansen van Vuuren speel al vanaf 2012 vir die klub en is steeds so passievol soos die eerste keer wat hy op die veld uitgedraf het. Hy noem ook dat die klub nie eksklusief vir rugbyspelers is nie, maar vir die hele familie. Voormalige 100m en 200m atleet, Victer Vlok, noem dat dit ‘n groot eer en trots is om vir jou dorp te speel. Franco van Niekerk en die res van die manne beaam die volgende: “Die hart van die rugbyklub is regtig die feit dat niemaand mekaar oordeel nie en daar is nie soveel druk nie. Wanneer jy aanjaag op die veld, word jy uitgetrap, maar na die tyd skud jy jou spanmaat se hand, gaan drink julle ietsie by die klubhuis en is alles weer reg.” Klubrugby dien ook as 'n platform vir diegene wie meer ernstig is en graag by groter klubs wil uitkom soos die Luiperds of Pumas. "Jy het nie nét rugby in gemeen nie, jy leer hulle van die veld af ook ken. Ek koop my hoenders en eiers by Armand, Don verkoop tweedehandse karre en Marius doen lisensies.” Al hierdie spelers deel 'n liefde vir rugby, almal is daar vir ‘n goeie tyd en sommiges is al so lank by die klub dat hul al meer as 100 wedstryde gespeel het. Potch Dorp Vroue - Watch this space Onder afrigting van Angelo en Jackie, is die vrouespan voorwaar ‘n span om dop te hou. Vroue rugby doen uitstekend en groei teen ‘n fenomenale spoed. Potch Dorp se vrouespan spesifiek het soveel gegroei dat dit nou die top vroueklub in die area is. Drikus het genoem dat sy visie en missie is om die vrouens en mans as een span te sien. Dié datums is datums om te dagboek: 10 Februarie - Proewe by die klub 17 Februarie - Visagie-beker wedstryde 24 Februarie - Oefenkamp en Spanbou dag Die publiek kan ook uitsien na die PVR Toernooi, Neser-beker, Klerksdorp Sevens en Junior Klub wedstryde.  Verder beoog hulle om verskillende fondsinsamelings en "lekker events" te hou om die publiek betrokke te kry. Spelers en Borge - Die twee kritieke rolspelers Die oorhoofse uitgawes het saam met Suid-Afrikaanse klubrugby gegroei en ongelukkig is die finansies nie altyd beskikbaar of bekombaar nie. Dit is hoekom dit so belangrik is vir besighede om betrokke te raak en regtig in te koop by plaaslike sportklubs. Finansies is nie noodwendig al wat geskenk hoef te word nie; toerusting, tyd, apparate, klere of enigiets anders is altyd en enige tyd welkom. Daar is ook 'n behoefte aan nog spelers om aan te sluit; "daar kan nooit te veel spelers wees nie", het Ferdi genoem. Almal is welkom om deel te raak van die klub, van 18-jariges tot 40-jariges. Potch Dorp nooi besighede en gemeenskapslede uit om betrokke en deel te raak van die rugbyklub, hetsy dit as speler, toeskouer of borg is.  Foto (Facebook blad): Die span tydens 'n wedstryd Die goue draadjie Die Potchefstroom gemeenskap is die goue draadjie wat geweef is deur elke gesprek wat ons met die spelers, bestuurders en afrigters gevoer het.
