After taking a short break in 2025, the National Autism Symposium is officially back on the calendar for 2026. This milestone tenth event is set to be a significant gathering for South Africa’s neurodivergent community and those who support them. The theme for the upcoming symposium is “Celebrating Autism: Next Steps,” focusing on a neuro-affirming approach that prioritises autistic voices and inclusive practices.
A Collaboration of Experts
The event is a joint effort between several key organisations. It is co-hosted by Autism South Africa (A;SA), North-West University (NWU), and the Centre for Health and Human Performance (CHHP). The South African Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (SA-ACAPAP) is also providing support. By combining academic research with real-world application, the organisers aim to move beyond just talking and instead foster a movement toward better understanding in clinical, educational, and family settings.
Mark Your Calendars
The symposium will take place from 28 to 29 August 2026. The venue is the North-West University campus in Potchefstroom. For those who cannot make the trip in person, there will also be online workshops available. Professionals attending the event should take note that CPD points will apply, making it a good opportunity to brush up on some skills while earning those necessary credits.
Who Is Invited?
The symposium is open to pretty much anyone with an interest in the field. This includes healthcare professionals like psychologists, psychiatrists, and GPs, as well as educators and school leadership teams. Researchers, social workers, and policy makers are encouraged to attend to see the latest evidence-informed support strategies.
Crucially, the event is also for autistic adults, self-advocates, and those with lived experience. Parents, caregivers, and students in health and social sciences will find plenty of space for networking and dialogue.
Finding Out More
For those who like to plan well in advance, more information can be found at NWU website.
Additional updates are available via the NWU Centre for Health and Human Performance Facebook page or their official university website. If you prefer the old-fashioned way of doing things, you can give them a ring on 018-299-1737. Given that this is a "save the date" announcement, it’s best to get it into the diary early to avoid the late-2026 rush.
