Ensuring Clean and Safe Business Practices
The City of Matlosana Local Municipality has reinforced its commitment to public health and business compliance through a targeted clean-up and inspection operation conducted in Randlespark and Ellaton on Friday, 11 October 2025. This proactive initiative was carried out in collaboration with several key stakeholders, the Matlosana Law Enforcement Unit, the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality Environmental Health Services, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and the Department of Home Affairs.

Purpose and Scope of the Operation
The special operation aimed to identify non-compliant business practices and ensure that trading environments within the city meet health, safety, and legal standards. Inspectors and enforcement officers conducted on-site evaluations across a range of establishments, focusing on product handling, storage conditions, and compliance with municipal and national trade regulations.
While the majority of businesses in both Randlespark and Ellaton were found to be operating within acceptable compliance standards, several violations were recorded.
These included:
Improperly packaged and labelled products
The sale of illegal or unregistered cosmetics
Mixing of incompatible goods, which pose potential fire and health risks
Expired food items still displayed for sale
All identified non-compliant products were confiscated and safely disposed of in accordance with health and safety protocols.
Strengthening Interdepartmental Collaboration
The clean-up drive showcased effective intergovernmental coordination, with multiple departments working in unison to promote safe business practices and protect public welfare. The Department of Home Affairs assisted with verifying documentation of business owners and employees, while SAPS officers ensured security and compliance during the operation.
This collaboration forms part of the City of Matlosana’s broader strategy to enhance urban management and ensure that local economic activity aligns with national standards for public safety and hygiene.

Promoting Responsible Trading and Awareness
The City’s Environmental Health and Law Enforcement officials emphasized the importance of education over punishment, encouraging traders to seek support when uncertain about compliance requirements. Business owners were reminded that they can consult the relevant departments for advice on product safety, packaging standards, and business licensing to avoid penalties or product confiscation in the future.
The approach reflects a balance between regulation and empowerment, ensuring that small businesses, particularly informal traders, are guided towards sustainable, lawful, and hygienic operations.
A Safer and Healthier Trading Environment
The City of Matlosana reaffirmed its ongoing dedication to protecting both consumers and legitimate businesses through regular inspections and awareness initiatives. The municipality’s continued enforcement of public health standards not only improves safety but also enhances trust and confidence in the city’s trading environment.
The Randlespark and Ellaton operation marks another step forward in the city’s mission to promote clean, compliant, and community-friendly commerce across all its regions.
