In the true spirit of action against climate change and community service, Potchefstroom Extension 7 recently became the vibrant epicenter of a massive environmental movement.
The Small Five Environmental and Tourism Organisation proudly joined forces with key government departments, local municipal leaders, and enthusiastic volunteers to activate a powerhouse Mandela Day campaign. The collaborative initiative went far beyond a temporary cleanup, laying down the groundwork for long-term environmental sustainability and active citizenship.

Power in Partnerships: Who Made It Happen?
Transforming a community requires collective action. This successful campaign was made possible through a formidable alliance of dedicated partners:
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE)
The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP)
JB Marks Local Municipality Environmental Management
The Office of the Executive Mayor
The Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT)
Together, these organizations and local residents rolled up their sleeves, clearing waste and revitalizing public spaces to demonstrate a shared commitment to a healthier living environment.

Empowering Local Institutions: Recycling at the Core
A highlight of the activation was a direct investment in the community’s future waste management infrastructure. To strengthen local recycling systems, the campaign proudly donated specialized recycling wheelie bins to two vital community hubs:
Ba Seobi Secondary School
Steve Tshwete Clinic
These donations ensure that both the youth and healthcare visitors have the immediate resources to practice responsible waste separation at the source.

The Road Ahead: Education and Action
This campaign was not a once-off event. To ensure a lasting legacy, DFFE Environmental Management graduates and the Small Five Environmental and Tourism Organisation are launching ongoing environmental awareness programmes.
The Next Steps: Active Mentorship: Working closely with learners, educators, and healthcare staff to build a culture of conservation. Community Engagement: Mobilizing patients, families, and neighbors to actively participate in daily recycling and waste reduction. Sustainable Habits: Turning these newly donated tools into a stepping stone for long-term ecological responsibility.

A Heartfelt Thank You
A massive thank you goes out to every volunteer, community member, and partner who lent their hands and hearts to this campaign. It is through these shared local efforts that we build cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable communities for generations to come.
Together, we are making a lasting difference—one community at a time.
