On 5 September 2025, the North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism (DEDECT), led by MEC Bitsa Lenkopane, carried out an intervention-focused visit to three key projects in Ikageng Township, Potchefstroom. The initiative, supported by JB Marks MMC for LED, Cllr. Malverine Davis, formed part of the Accelerated Service Delivery Programme, Thuntsha Lerole, which was being rolled out in Ga-Mogopa Village within JB Marks Local Municipality.
The visits aimed to unblock challenges hindering progress in high-potential projects, with a focus on supporting local enterprises, creating sustainable jobs, and ensuring inclusive community development.

Business-in-a-Box Tyre Project
One of the primary stops was the site earmarked for the installation of one of five Dunlop tyre operating containers. The project is part of the Business-in-a-Box (BIB) initiative, a public-private partnership between Dunlop and DEDECT designed to modernize township and rural tyre businesses across the province.
The MEC acknowledged that the project faced administrative delays that stalled progress. Following direct intervention and coordination with JB Marks Local Municipality, the obstacles were cleared, and the site handover is scheduled for next week to enable infrastructure installation.
MEC Lenkopane directed the project team to engage local communities, taxi operators, and nearby businesses, ensuring inclusive consultation. She also encouraged the site’s expansion into a broader trade market, giving space for other community members to participate in economic activities and generate additional business opportunities.
Kgolo GC Trading Enterprise
At Kgolo GC Trading Enterprise, MEC Lenkopane held discussions with the business owner to identify growth barriers. The major concern raised was financial management, which has limited expansion and job creation.
In response, DEDECT committed to deploying a specialist financial assessment team to review the enterprise’s operations. The findings will determine the type of intervention needed—potentially including Business Rescue Support or links to institutions such as the Provincial Treasury.
This proactive step aims to stabilize the enterprise, enhance its financial viability, and secure pathways for sustainable growth.

Ikageng Light Industry Park
The final stop was the Ikageng Light Industry Park, a municipal-led initiative designed to host small and medium enterprises. Accompanied by JB Marks LED Director Dr. Robets-Tebejane and representatives from the Office of the Premier, MEC Lenkopane instructed officials to profile all MSMEs operating under lease agreements in the park.
The profiling exercise is intended to connect businesses with funders, financial support mechanisms, and skills training opportunities, ultimately strengthening the park’s role as a hub for local economic development.
Empowerment Fund Support
As part of the day’s programme, DEDECT handed over Empowerment Fund certificates to four enterprises within JB Marks Municipality. Valued at R795 050,00, the funding will provide machinery and equipment to two women-owned businesses and two enterprises owned by persons with disabilities.
The support reflects DEDECT’s commitment to inclusive growth, ensuring that vulnerable and historically marginalized groups gain access to opportunities and resources.
Ongoing Monitoring and Accountability
In closing, MEC Lenkopane pledged to return to all three project sites next week to monitor progress and maintain active engagement with stakeholders. The commitment underscores DEDECT’s role in not only unlocking immediate challenges but also ensuring long-term accountability and measurable results for communities.
