In a proactive move to support emerging entrepreneurs and stimulate local economic growth, the City of Matlosana Local Municipality hosted a dynamic SMMEs Youth Workshop on Wednesday, 25 June 2025. The event, held at the Auditorium Hall in Klerksdorp, was made possible through a collaborative effort with the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (SEDFA), aiming to equip young business owners with practical tools and knowledge.

Bridging the Gap Between Ambition and Action
The workshop brought together a host of stakeholders from various sectors, including government agencies, financial institutions, and local business representatives. Presenters from the Department of Economic Development, Environment, and Tourism (DEDECT), the South African Revenue Service (SARS), the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), and SEDFA addressed the critical steps involved in starting and sustaining a business.
One of the key themes was access to financial and developmental support. Representatives from ABSA offered practical guidance on financial management, highlighting the importance of budgeting, record-keeping, and long-term planning. Simultaneously, SARS officials emphasized the need for tax compliance and clarified misconceptions around business registration, even encouraging submission of tax returns for businesses not yet generating income.
Encouragement from Leadership
Councillor Wesley Kgang, the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Local Economic Development, opened the event with a message of empowerment. Stressing the vital role of SMMEs in job creation and economic diversification, Kgang urged attendees to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them.
He noted, “SMMEs are the backbone of our economy. This workshop is a step towards building a resilient and inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem in Matlosana.”
LED Support and Collaboration
The session concluded with remarks from Local Economic Development (LED) project coordinator, Ms. Ruth Kepadisa, who thanked attendees for their active participation. She encouraged ongoing collaboration with the LED unit, which continues to serve as a resource hub for small business support, mentorship, and policy guidance.
