Just 13 kilometres outside Klerksdorp, along the scenic road to Potchefstroom and Eleazer, lies one of the North West Province’s most charming natural retreats: the Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve. Spanning roughly 1,000 hectares of pristine bushveld, this reserve offers visitors a peaceful escape filled with acacia thorn trees, rocky koppies, chalky depressions (geological formations), and expansive grasslands teeming with life.

A Bushveld Escape on the City’s Doorstep
Named after the well-known naturalist Faan Meintjies, the reserve provides a genuine bushveld experience within easy reach of urban comforts. Only about 170 kilometres from Johannesburg, Faan Meintjies is perfectly suited for a leisurely day trip, and its well-marked entrances make it accessible for all travellers venturing from Klerksdorp or the surrounding areas.
With two well-maintained road loops meandering through diverse landscapes and three seasonal dams scattered across the property, the reserve caters to both relaxed sightseeing and immersive wildlife viewing. The terrain supports around 30 species of mammals, offering opportunities to spot anything from antelope to smaller bush creatures in their natural environment.

Recreation and Relaxation
For families, photographers, and nature lovers alike, Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve offers picnic facilities, camping options, and tranquil walking routes. The reserve’s well-kept amenities make it suitable for day visitors who want to enjoy a braai under the trees, while overnight guests can immerse themselves in the sounds of the bush as night falls over the North West veld.
A Haven for Birdwatchers
Faan Meintjies has earned a reputation as a birding hotspot, often included in national birdwatching routes. Enthusiasts flock here to spot both common and rare species; a testament to the reserve’s ecological diversity. Among the most sought-after sightings are the Gabar goshawk, chestnut-backed finchlark, melodious lark, and Kalahari robin. As dusk falls, the air fills with the calls of nocturnal species such as the spotted eagle owl, barn owl, and the distinctive rufous-cheeked nightjar.
The caravan park and picnic sites within the reserve make ideal vantage points for birdwatching. Visitors often find that the ant-eating chat and familiar chat (two of the area’s most charming feathered residents) are tame enough to come remarkably close, adding to the sense of intimacy with nature.

A Step Back in Time
Many visitors combine their trip to the reserve with a stop in nearby Klerksdorp, a city steeped in history. Regarded as one of the oldest white settlements in the old Transvaal, Klerksdorp’s roots stretch back to the gold rush era, the same gold that forged the so-called “Treasure Route” (N12) through Potchefstroom, Stilfontein, and Klerksdorp. Exploring both the reserve and the city offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue.
Mahala Week
With Mahala Week in full swing, visitors to the Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve can enjoy free entry into the reserve until the 19th of October. This forms part of the larger Mahala Week that took place all over the country and its respective national parks, which ran from 22 - 28 September.
