As Mandela Day 2025 rolls around on Friday 18 July, South Africans everywhere are once again being nudged to do something a little more useful than bingeing series or getting into debates about boerewors vs. wors rolls. The call, as always, is simple: give 67 minutes of your time in service to others.
Now, if you're scratching your head wondering what you can do that doesn’t involve hard labour or singing awkward group songs, look no further than your local parkrun. Specifically, Kleinplaas parkrun in Potchefstroom is putting out the call for volunteers. And unlike the gym, you don’t even need to sign a contract or feel guilty for skipping a week.
The Mandela Day Plan
While the big day is officially on Friday, you can channel your inner Madiba spirit the next day, Saturday, 19 July, by volunteering at Kleinplaas parkrun. Whether you're pointing confused runners in the right direction, handing out finish tokens with a dramatic flair, or scanning barcodes like a pro, every little bit counts.
Remember, those 67 minutes aren’t about solving global peace (although you're welcome to try), they’re about community. Mandela gave 67 years of his life to public service, giving just 67 minutes back seems like a fair trade.

Why Parkrun?
For one, it's already organised, timed, and filled with people who smile way too early in the morning. But more importantly, parkrun brings people together. It's a community in motion, literally, and it’s the perfect setting to do some good while keeping your takkies relatively clean.
So if you’ve got hands (and we assume you do), it’s time to put one up and volunteer. Mandela said it’s in your hands. Kleinplaas says, cool, we’ll see you on the 19th. Just don’t forget your sunscreen.
Let’s make a difference. Together. Even if it’s just for 67 minutes.
