The City of Matlosana has entered the 2026 Easter long weekend with a dual focus on administrative stability and public security. In a significant move to address long-standing fiscal challenges, the municipality has welcomed a new provincial representative to oversee its financial recovery. Simultaneously, local leadership has issued a stern call for personal accountability on the roads as holiday travel intensifies across the region.

New Provincial Executive Representative Appointed to Tackle Financial Crisis
On Wednesday, 1 April 2025, the City of Matlosana officially introduced Dr. Moatlhodi Dilotsotlhe as the new Provincial Executive Representative (PER). The appointment, facilitated by MEC for Finance Hon. Kenetswe Mosenogi and MEC for COGTA Hon. Gaoage Molapisi, comes in response to identified "serious financial distress" within the municipality.
The intervention is rooted in Section 139(5)(a) and (c) of the Constitution, alongside the Municipal Financial Management Act (MFMA). Dr. Dilotsotlhe’s primary mandate involves:
Implementing a mandatory Financial Recovery Plan (FRP).
Enhancing management accountability and leadership stability.
Submitting monthly progress reports, with a formal review scheduled in three months.
The introduction was attended by the City’s "Troika", Executive Mayor Cllr Fikile Mahlophe, Speaker Cllr Stella Mondlane-Ngwenya, and Single Whip Cllr Rose Thabanchu, signifying a unified front in the effort to restore public trust and ensure sustainable service delivery.

Uncompromising Stance on Road Safety This Easter
As millions of travelers begin their journey to coastal retreats and holy sites, MMC for Public Safety, Cllr Wandiswa Zitwane, has issued a high-level safety directive. Aligning with the national "It Begins With Me" initiative, the MMC emphasized that safety is a "personal contract" rather than just a government mandate.
Under the theme of "Personal Accountability," the Department of Public Safety has outlined specific expectations for all road users:
Drivers: Encouraged to rest every two hours to combat fatigue and maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward drinking and driving.
Pedestrians: Urged to stay off high-speed freeways to avoid fatal accidents.
Passengers: Reminded to insist on wearing seatbelts at all times.
Cllr Zitwane warned that law enforcement strategies this year will be uncompromising. While acknowledging the dedication of emergency responders working through the holiday, the MMC noted that while the city provides enforcement, the citizens must provide the behavior. Travelers are urged to check tires, lights, and "attitude" before starting their engines to break the cycle of road tragedies.
Final Thought
The combination of strict financial oversight and intensified law enforcement marks a pivotal moment for Matlosana as it seeks to navigate both economic and social challenges. With provincial support now firmly in place and public safety teams on high alert, the municipality aims to emerge from the holiday period with improved stability and a clear path toward recovery.
