The City of Matlosana has launched a robust "Back 2 School" support network to ensure that learners from disadvantaged backgrounds begin the 2026 academic year with dignity and confidence. This multi-departmental effort, involving both the Office of the Speaker and the Office of the Executive Mayor, focuses on removing the socio-economic barriers that often hinder a student's readiness for the first day of school.
By providing both essential goods and personal grooming services, the municipality is fostering an environment where every child, regardless of their financial circumstances, can focus entirely on their education.

Speaker’s Initiative Restores Learner Confidence in Khuma
From 12 to 13 January 2026, the Office of the Speaker, led by Cllr Stella Mondlane-Ngwenya, hosted a successful two-day campaign specifically designed to address the practical and personal needs of learners. The event, which saw high participation in Khuma, offered a range of free services including haircuts for boys, traditional cornrows for girls, and professional book-covering services. This initiative relied heavily on the spirit of volunteerism, with local hairstylists and community members donating their time to help children start their school year on a positive note.

Cllr Mondlane-Ngwenya expressed deep gratitude to the volunteers and participants, noting that these seemingly small services play a vital role in building a learner’s self-esteem. By ensuring that students arrive at school looking and feeling their best, the campaign aims to reduce the stigma associated with poverty and create a sense of belonging within the classroom.

Executive Mayor Boosts School Readiness with Shoe Donation
Supplementing the grooming services provided by the Speaker’s office, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Fikile Mahlophe, visited Leseding Primary School in Khuma Extension 9 on Wednesday, 14 January 2026. During this visit, the Mayor officially donated 72 pairs of new school shoes to the institution as part of the broader school readiness program. This donation targets the most vulnerable learners, ensuring they have sturdy footwear to navigate their daily commute to school.
In his address, Mayor Mahlophe emphasized that supporting the youth is a collective responsibility and thanked the Office of the Speaker, sponsors, and volunteers for their collaborative efforts. The Principal of Leseding Primary, Ms. Monchusi, accepted the donation on behalf of the school, confirming that the shoes would be distributed to the most deserving, underprivileged learners. This unified approach by Matlosana’s leadership underscores a commitment to equitable education and community upliftment.

As the academic year commences, the City of Matlosana continues to demonstrate that the welfare of its youngest citizens is a top priority. Through these targeted interventions, the municipality is not just providing shoes and haircuts, but is investing in the future success and psychological well-being of its future leaders.
