The City of Matlosana has recently undertaken a series of significant initiatives aimed at both economic integrity and environmental sustainability. Through high-level provincial collaborations and grassroots educational campaigns, the municipality is positioning itself as a proactive hub for consumer rights and resource management. These efforts reflect a dual focus on protecting the financial interests of residents while securing the city's vital natural resources for future generations.

Matlosana Hosts Provincial World Consumer Rights Day Colloquium
On Thursday, 05 March 2026, the City of Matlosana served as the host for the Provincial World Consumer Rights Day Colloquium. Held at the Rio Hotel, the event gathered a diverse group of high-ranking officials and industry stakeholders to discuss the enforcement of fair market practices and the strengthening of consumer protection frameworks within the North West Province.
The colloquium saw the attendance of several key figures, including:
Honourable Bitsa Lenkopane: MEC for the North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation, and Tourism.
Cllr Fikile Mahlophe: Executive Mayor of the City of Matlosana.
Cllr Wesley Kgang: MMC for Local Economic Development.
The 2026 theme specifically targeted the automotive sector: “Consumers’ Right to Receive Goods, i.e., Motor Vehicles that are in Good Working Order and Free from Defects.” This focus was chosen to address growing concerns regarding the transparency of the second-hand vehicle market. By bringing together regulatory authorities, financial institutions, and motor vehicle dealerships, the colloquium aimed to bridge the gap between business integrity and consumer awareness.
Discussions centered on ensuring that businesses operate with accountability and that residents are empowered to identify and report unfair trade practices. The City of Matlosana emphasized its ongoing commitment to supporting initiatives that shield the local economy from unethical commercial behavior.

Water Department Initiates Educational Campaign for Water Month
As part of the national observance of Water Month throughout March 2026, the City of Matlosana’s Water Department has launched an extensive awareness campaign focused on the youth. The initiative is designed to instill a culture of conservation within local schools, acknowledging the critical role of water as a finite resource.
On Monday, 09 March 2026, the campaign visited Moyo Educators School in Klerksdorp, engaging learners from Grades 4 to 7. Led by Mrs. Khido Keikabile, the program provided practical instruction on reducing water waste and environmental stewardship.
Key conservation strategies shared with students included:
Identifying and fixing leaks in domestic and school environments.
The importance of turning off taps immediately after use.
Utilizing water-efficient appliances.
The procedure for reporting major water waste to municipal authorities with parental assistance.
Mrs. Keikabile urged educators to integrate these conservation habits into the daily school routine, reinforcing the message that "Water is Life." The Water Department plans to continue its outreach to various other schools across the municipality for the remainder of the month to ensure widespread participation in the conservation effort.
Final Thought
Through these distinct yet complementary programs, the City of Matlosana is demonstrating a comprehensive approach to municipal governance. By addressing the immediate legal rights of consumers and the long-term necessity of water security, the municipality is working to create a more resilient and informed community. These actions highlight the importance of cooperation between government departments, local businesses, and the public in fostering a sustainable and equitable urban environment.
