The Executive Mayor of the City of Matlosana, Hon. Cllr Fikile Mahlophe, led a high-level delegation to Tshepong Hospital on Tuesday, 27 January 2026, following devastating torrential rains that triggered widespread flooding and power outages across the region.
The severe weather, characterized by heavy thunderstorms and high winds, struck the city on Monday afternoon, overwhelming drainage systems and leaving several neighborhoods in Jouberton and Kanana submerged.
Emergency Assessment at Tshepong Hospital
Although healthcare facilities fall under provincial jurisdiction, Mayor Mahlophe visited Tshepong Hospital in person to evaluate the damage and address critical infrastructure failures. The facility experienced significant flooding in multiple units, a recurring issue that has previously been attributed to the inability of external drainage systems to manage heavy runoff from surrounding areas.

To mitigate further risks, the Mayor immediately established a joint technical team comprising municipal and hospital personnel to fast-track the repair and maintenance of drainage channels in and around the facility.
Mayor Mahlophe was accompanied during the inspection by several Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs), including:
Cllr Modesa Seitshiro
Cllr Agisanang Ramphele
Cllr Nosandla Zitwane
Cllr Barrend Stafford
Cllr Matome Mangesi
Also in attendance were Municipal Manager Ms. Lesego Seametso, along with ward councillors from
Jouberton and Kanana.
Disaster Management Response in Jouberton
The City of Matlosana Local Municipality has activated Disaster Management officers to conduct ongoing assessments and response efforts throughout the affected extensions. The initial reports highlight significant impact in the following residential areas:
Extension 19: At least one household has been confirmed flooded.
Extension 1: Several houses have reported flood damage.
General Outages: The storm's high winds and lightning resulted in widespread power outages that continue to affect local residents.
"Disaster Management officers are continuing with assessments and response efforts to ensure all affected families receive the necessary support," the Municipality stated in an official update.
Regional Context
The flooding in Matlosana occurs as South Africa continues to grapple with a National State of Disaster, declared on 19 January 2026, due to persistent severe weather across five provinces, including the North West. Nationally, the floods have claimed at least 37 lives and displaced thousands of families as of late January.
The Municipality has committed to providing further updates as the joint technical team begins its work and disaster assessments are finalized.
