The Merafong City Local Municipality observed Nelson Mandela Day 2026 through a series of local civic outreach programmes focused on elderly care facilities. Led by Executive Mayor Councillor Nozuko Best, municipal representatives conducted community engagement visits at care institutions across the region, highlighting the role of public care and corporate partnership in supporting senior citizens.

Civic Outreach at Wedela Old Age Centre
The municipal observances commenced with an official visit by Executive Mayor Cllr Nozuko Best to the Wedela Old Age Centre as part of the Office of the Executive Mayor’s broader Mandela Day itinerary. During the visit, municipal officials spent time with residents, organizing fellowship activities and engaging directly with the facility's senior community.
The initiative aimed to recognize the historical contributions of elderly residents within the municipality while emphasizing the importance of social support and dignity for vulnerable groups. In her address to the facility, Mayor Best referenced Nelson Mandela's legacy of service and community impact as the guiding principle behind local government outreach efforts.

Corporate Collaboration at Aganang Old Age Centre
On July 17, 2026, the local government extended its Mandela Month activities through a collaborative effort with the mining sector. The municipality joined representatives from Harmony Gold’s Kusasalethu Operation, led by Mr. Sipho Mudau, to conduct an outreach campaign at the Aganang Old Age Centre.
The joint delegation participated in the traditional "67 Minutes" of service, delivering practical support and engagement to the residents. This public-private partnership highlighted the ongoing role of industrial stakeholders and mining operations in supporting local municipal community development programs in the Merafong region.

Broader Context and Community Engagement
These activities form part of nationwide commemorations during Mandela Month, where government entities, private companies, and civil society organizations dedicate time toward community upliftment. By focusing efforts on elderly care centers, Merafong City Local Municipality sought to address social welfare priorities and reinforce civic ties between local leadership, corporate partners, and residents. The municipal executive indicated that direct civic engagement and collaborative partnerships will remain central to its ongoing social development framework.
