The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Electrical Engineering, Councillor Matome Mangesi, has been meeting with residents of Kanana, which includes wards 22 to 27, to tackle persistent electricity-related challenges. The engagements, held in partnership with Eskom, aimed to provide clarity on service delivery concerns while also addressing immediate infrastructure problems.

Community Concerns Raised
During the meetings, residents highlighted several pressing issues:
Electricity token rejections in certain meter boxes.
Cable theft, which has disrupted supply.
Meter boxes that have remained uninstalled for over a year.
Requests for Eskom to replace broken meter boxes.
Concerns about non-functioning high mast lights that affect safety in several neighborhoods.
These issues reflect ongoing frustrations in the community, where electricity access and security remain critical concerns for households and businesses alike.

Progress on Repairs
As part of the response, repairs have already been carried out on high mast lights in some wards. MMC Mangesi explained that while many lights have been restored, older units that are damaged beyond repair will be replaced with new installations.
This intervention forms part of wider efforts to stabilise the electricity system in Kanana and improve both service delivery and public safety.

Partnership with Eskom
The collaboration between the City of Matlosana and Eskom remains central to addressing the area’s challenges. The involvement of Eskom is particularly critical in managing technical issues like cable theft, meter replacements, and long-standing equipment delays.
Outlook
While repairs to lighting infrastructure mark progress, broader issues such as equipment theft, rejected tokens, and delays in box installations still require long-term solutions. The engagements with residents underline the municipality’s recognition of these challenges and its efforts to rebuild trust through direct dialogue and targeted interventions.
