NWU Hosts Third Annual Science Day in Kuruman

The North-West University (NWU) held its third annual Vice-Chancellor’s Science Day in Kuruman on 6 August 2025. The event took place at the Thabo Moorosi Multi-Purpose Hall in Mothibistad and formed part of National Science Week, which ran from 4 to 9 August 2025.

Event Overview
The Science Day was hosted under the national theme “Science, Technology and Innovation are for Everyone.” It was supported by Anglo American’s Kumba Iron Ore and attended by learners, educators, and community members from the Kuruman area. The programme included robotics demonstrations, science exhibitions, and career-focused discussions between scientists and school learners.
Key Participants
The NWU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bismark Tyobeka, addressed attendees and referred to national economic data, including an unemployment rate of approximately 32,6% and income distribution where the bottom 40% of the population earn 11,5% of the national income. He noted the importance of providing access to scientific tools, mentorship, and exposure to learners in rural areas.
The Executive Dean of the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Prof. David Modise, highlighted the role of the event in encouraging learners to gain scientific knowledge that could be applied in further education and in contributing to local communities.

Learner Participation
Learners from various schools attended the event, including representatives from Tshireletso High School. Activities during the day included interactive sessions on problem-solving skills, introductions to innovation concepts, and exhibitions showcasing different scientific fields.
