NWU’s Prof Leepile Sehularo Honoured with Special Impact Mental Health Award

Efforts to strengthen mental health awareness and policy in South Africa were recently recognised when Professor Leepile Sehularo of the North-West University (NWU) received the Special Impact Mental Health Award at the inaugural Keturah Mental Health Awards held in Johannesburg. The accolade highlights his long-standing commitment to improving community mental health systems through research, education, and inter-institutional collaboration.

Event Overview:

The award ceremony took place on 25 October 2025 at Le Chateau Guest House and Conference Centre under the theme “Fatherhood and its impact on mental health.” Originating in Uganda and introduced to South Africa for the first time in 2025, the Keturah Mental Health Awards celebrate professionals and organisations driving progress in mental health through policy influence, advocacy, clinical practice, and research. The initiative aims to strengthen regional cooperation and recognise the contributions of individuals working toward inclusive and accessible mental health services.

Academic and Community Contributions:

As Director of the Lifestyle Diseases Research Entity at NWU, Prof Sehularo has led various programmes dedicated to improving mental health support in communities. His work integrates research, community engagement, and education, with a focus on reducing stigma and improving early intervention in mental health care.

He has forged key partnerships with institutions such as Bophelong Psychiatric Hospital, Kgatelopele Wellness Centre, and the North West College of Nursing. These collaborations focus on advancing public awareness campaigns, professional training, and wellness outreach projects that bridge the gap between academic research and community-based care.

Leadership in Mental Health Governance:

Prof Sehularo’s contributions extend beyond academia into the field of mental health governance. He has served on the North West Mental Health Review Board, where he has been involved in oversight, ethical guidance, and policy development for mental health services. He is currently serving his second term as a board member at Bophelong Psychiatric Hospital, where he continues to provide strategic input on clinical and institutional matters.

Impact and Recognition:

Prof Sehularo’s recognition by Keturah reflects a broader shift towards prioritising mental health within South Africa’s public health agenda. His work underscores the growing importance of collaboration between universities, healthcare institutions, and policymakers to strengthen mental health systems nationally.

The award serves as a reminder of the critical role that research, advocacy, and education play in shaping sustainable mental health frameworks. It also highlights the impact of academic leadership in addressing complex societal challenges through inclusive and innovative approaches.
