It is time to dust off the trainers and perhaps find a notebook that isn’t filled with grocery lists, as the North-West University (NWU) has announced the return of the Spring Sport Science Summit. This second edition of the event is scheduled to take place from 17 to 19 September 2026 at the Potchefstroom campus.
A focus on the next generation
The summit is operating under the theme "Precision, Performance, and Possibility: Reimagining Sport Science for the Next Generation." While the title sounds like something out of a high-tech lab, the goal is practical: looking at how sport science can evolve to better serve the athletes of tomorrow. It’s an opportunity for professionals and students to gather and discuss where the industry is heading.
A collaborative effort in health sciences
The event is a joint venture involving several heavy hitters within the NWU Faculty of Health Sciences. The School of Human Movement Sciences is teaming up with the Centre for Health and Human Performance (CHHP), specifically the Sport Science and Biokinetics division.
Adding more weight to the academic side is the participation of PhASRec (Physical Activity, Sport and Recreation). To ensure the proceedings stay grounded in the practical realities of the industry, the summit is being held in collaboration with CEO’s in Sport. This mix of academic research and corporate insight suggests that attendees will get a well-rounded view of the sporting world.
How to get involved
For those who like to plan their lives two years in advance, or for those who simply don’t want to forget the date, further information is available through various channels. The organisers can be reached via telephone at 018-299-1737 or through email at chhp@nwu.ac.za.
Updates and further details regarding the programme are expected to be posted on the NWU Faculty of Health Sciences website and the CHHP Facebook page. Whether you are a biokineticist, a sport scientist, or someone who just enjoys the science behind a well-executed scrum, this summit is likely to have something of interest.
