A Different Kind of History Lesson
If you’ve ever thought, “I should really record these stories before they’re gone,” you’re in luck. The Klerksdorp Cultural Museum is giving locals the chance to do just that with a free two-day Oral History Workshop happening on Saturday 7 June and Saturday 14 June 2025.
Forget dusty textbooks, this one’s about those lekker real-life tales passed down over tea and vetkoek. You know, like how ouma’s cake recipe has survived decades without ever touching a recipe book, or the classic “I walked 10km to school, barefoot in the snow” saga your uncle trots out at every family braai.
What You’ll Learn
The workshop will cover the basics of oral history documentation, aimed at helping people record the kinds of personal and community stories that often get lost between generations. Whether it’s family memories, community struggles, or cultural traditions, if it’s a story, it’s worth keeping.
No, you don’t need a PhD or a fancy recorder. Just bring a pen, some paper, and the willingness to listen (and maybe a backup battery for your phone if you're the recording type).
Free, but Not Unlimited
While the workshop is free, it’s not a free-for-all. Space is limited, so booking is essential. To secure your spot, give Thandi a shout during office hours at 018-487-8900. Just remember: it’s a two-day course, so plan to attend both Saturdays.
Want to share the event with your WhatsApp groups? Go for it. Just don’t forget to RSVP first, we all know what happens when too many people pitch without booking (hint: nothing gets baked).
The promotional image, which looks like a scene straight out of a nostalgic movie, says it all: documenting oral history isn’t just about facts, it’s about connection. And hey, if nothing else, it gives you the perfect excuse to get your relatives talking. Just be ready to hear about that one time your cousin nearly burnt the kitchen down. Again.
For more information, booking, or to simply make sure you get a seat before the cousins do, get in touch with Thandi. Your future great-grandkids will thank you.
