The Potch Polocrosse Club has released its official fixtures for 2026, revealing a calendar that keeps riders and their horses busy from the summer heat of January through to the mild spring of October. The club, which serves as a hub for polocrosse and Western Mounted Games (WMG), emphasizes a family-friendly atmosphere where horse sport enthusiasts of all levels can gather.
While the schedule is set, organisers have noted that dates remain subject to the whims of the weather and other unforeseen circumstances.
Kicking off the year: Dust, picnics and practice
The season starts gently in January with two open days at the club on the 10th and the 24th/25th. These events include picnics and are open to everyone, serving as an introduction for those curious about the sport.
February shifts the focus toward skill development. Coaching clinics featuring high-level instructors are scheduled for mid-month, specifically from 14 to 18 February and again from 28 February to 1 March at the Potch Club. On the competitive front, riders will head to Bloemhof on 7 and 8 February for the NW Q3&4, followed by a trip to Sasolburg for the FS Q1 later in the month.
Autumn travels and regional clashes
As the weather cools in March and April, the club hits the road. March includes the FS Q2 in Sasolburg and social events in Elandslaagte and Bethal. April follows a similar pattern with social fixtures in Hidcote, Harrismith, and Walkerville. The month ends with a choice of high-stakes play, as the FS Q9/10 takes place in Parys while the Cape Clash happens at Igqualla Park.
May is particularly busy, starting with the TWK Classic in Bethal. The month also features the Bishopstowe Ladies Clinic and various regional championships. Riders will compete in the GP/MP/NW Champs at Ngwenya and the WC/EC Champs at Swartvlei simultaneously on 16 and 17 May, followed by the KZN Champs a week later.
International stars and winter highlights
June brings a significant international flavour to the sport. Bishopstowe will host an official tour featuring the South African men against Zimbabwe and the South African ladies against New Zealand from 12 to 14 June.
The winter months do not see a slowdown. July includes the Junior Classics and IPT at Bishopstowe, the Shongweni Highgoal, and further qualifying rounds in Sasolburg. International competition returns in August, with South Africa facing Australia in a Senior Mixed Tour. The month also sees a Test Series against the USA for U19 and U25 riders in Walkerville, and a Junior Development Tour to Zimbabwe.
The home stretch and club honours
September is a landmark month for the local club as it hosts the Potch Challenge Cup. The festivities begin with a Sponsors Gala on 4 September, followed by two days of play at the Potch Club. The month concludes with the SA Club Champs at Ngwenya and Bethal, and the SAWMGA Nationals running into early October. The season officially wraps up with the Cape Classic on 3 and 4 October.
The club remains open to new members and supporters interested in horse sports.
