Big Skies Await at FAPS
From 4 to 11 October 2025, Potchefstroom will once again host the South African National Gliding Championships. The competition takes place at Potchefstroom airfield where around 30 gliders will take to the skies daily. Categories include 15 metre, 18 metre and double-seater classes, drawing participants from across the globe.

Daily Programme
Each morning a new task is set for the day, usually covering 300 to 500 kilometres. From 12 noon the gliders are winched or towed into the air and generally return between 4 and 5 in the afternoon. The public is welcome to watch the action, though spectators are reminded not to touch or walk among the gliders. Each aircraft is polished and prepped daily to remove even a single fingerprint, which can influence performance.
Food, Parking and Practicalities
An onsite tuckshop at the clubhouse will keep visitors supplied with cooldrinks and light meals. For those wanting something heartier, there will be breakfast buffets and evening dinners available by booking in advance. Vehicles should be parked at the clubhouse or away from the flight line to keep the airfield safe and clear.
Open Invitation
Entry is free, which means anyone can come along and see the best pilots in the world tackle South Africa’s skies. The event is weather dependent, so the actual flying each day may vary.
