Signs of Progress: Roads, Water, and Waste Services Addressed Across JB Marks

Potchefstroom, 24 June 2025 Community Progress Report

JB Marks Local Municipality has shared a detailed progress report highlighting ongoing work and recent completions across multiple essential services, from road repairs and sewage resolution to critical water infrastructure and waste management. The latest update reflects a mix of challenges being addressed and early signs of sustained improvement in targeted areas.

🛣️ Road and Paving Projects: Improvements on Key Routes

Municipal road teams continued maintenance efforts across several key locations:

Bloemetjie Street

  • Pothole preparation has been finalized, with all cavities squared off and stabilized.

  • Asphalt infill and final surfacing are scheduled for tomorrow.

Retief & Luke Street Intersection (Pick n Pay Zone)

  • Roughly 80% of patching work was completed over the weekend.

  • Final patching and compaction will take place on Tuesday morning.

  • Crews will then return to Bloemetjie Street for the final resurfacing phase.

Chief Albert Luthuli & Louis le Grange Intersection

  • Paving progress now stands at 51% completion.

  • Work is ongoing, with more ground expected to be covered tomorrow.

💧 Water Infrastructure and System Monitoring

Water system assessments and trench preparation also formed a key part of recent developments:

Ward 18 Excavation Support

  • Water was pumped from trenches in advance of geotechnical assessments by AGES.

  • The work aims to ensure the trench environment is stable and ready for detailed study.

Reservoir Levels & Pressure Monitoring

Old Works Reservoir

  • Level: 81.82% – Stable

  • Supply areas: CBD and Extensions 1–3

Vyfhoek System

  • 6.4ML Reservoir: 96.43% – Optimal

  • 3.4ML Tanks (x2): Isolated due to 315-line construction

➤ Dual isolation reduces pressure flexibility during project execution

Ventersdorp Complex

  • 9.5ML: 71.43%

  • 13.5ML: 67.86%

  • 15ML: 60.71% – Low and flagged for priority refill

➤ Water replenishment and usage audits are underway

Ikageng System

  • Main tank: 81.82% – Stable

  • West tank: 95.45% – Optimal

Eesterandjies Reservoir

  • 5ML tank: Empty – Critical

  • 10ML tank: Isolated

➤ Emergency response activated: water tankers and system diagnostics scheduled

  • An awareness campaign is planned to educate the public on responsible disposal practices.

🔑 Key Observations and Action Points

  1. Eesterandjies Emergency

➤ Immediate deployment of water tankers and investigation of supply failure

  2. Ventersdorp System Monitoring

➤ Refill efforts underway, with usage audits to manage declining levels

  3. Vyfhoek Construction Pressure

➤ Ongoing 315-line construction temporarily reduces reservoir system flexibility

  4. Stable Operations

➤ Systems in Ikageng and Old Works are functioning well under current conditions

Looking Ahead

While infrastructure strain remains evident in areas such as Ventersdorp and Eesterandjies, operational teams continue to monitor, repair, and reinforce key service points across the municipality. Completed road works, resolved sewage cases, and stable reservoir zones indicate progress, though high-demand areas will require ongoing attention and strategic intervention.

Residents are encouraged to remain engaged, conserve resources where possible, and report service issues using the official municipal contact line at 018 293 1111.
