Welcome back, Potchefstroom! We have officially wrapped up Week 21 of 2026, and it has been an absolute blockbuster seven days. If you’ve stepped outside at all this week, you’ve undoubtedly felt it,the crisp autumn air is completely charged with anticipation.

Our "Our Eyes in the Field" team has been operating at maximum capacity. We’ve been celebrating global cultural milestones, tracing the historical roots of our most iconic institutions, tracking elusive river wildlife, and talking strategy with civic safety leaders.
But above all else, Classic Clash Fever has officially broken out in Potchefstroom! The annual, legendary sporting rivalry between Gimmies and Volkies is just around the corner, and we went behind the scenes to capture the raw energy of the squads preparing for battle.
Settle in for your comprehensive, 10-minute deep dive into the events, highlights, and local stories that defined our community this week.
Our Eyes in the Field: Potchefstroom
From international awareness days and campus deep dives to humanitarian fashion and riverbank watches, our Potchefstroom beat was incredibly diverse this week.
May 18: Celebrating International Museum Day with "FRAGMENTS"
We kicked off Monday on a high cultural note. May 18th officially marked International Museum Day, a global celebration of heritage, art, and historical preservation. To honor the occasion, The Go-To Guy team headed over to the Potchefstroom Museum to immerse ourselves in a deeply moving local art exhibition.
If you are a lover of fine art, unique storytelling, and regional creative expression, you quite literally cannot afford to miss this. Titled "FRAGMENTE" (Fragments), this striking group exhibition showcases the exceptional, profound work of the immensely talented Greyling trio: Mossie Greyling, Franci Greyling, and Henrico Greyling.
The execution of their pieces provides a beautiful reflection on local identity and creative depth. The best part? The exhibition is running for several more weeks, making it the perfect family weekend outing or afternoon escape.
When: On display until June 12, 2026
Viewing Times (Weekdays): 09:00 – 13:00 and 14:00 – 16:00
Where: Potchefstroom Museum, Corner of Sol Plaatje and Wolmarans Street.

May 18: A Journey Through Time at the Ferdinand Postma Library
Remaining on the theme of heritage on Monday, our media team headed over to the North-West University (NWU) campus. We spent the afternoon tracking the decades-long evolution of a true architectural and academic titan: the Ferdinand Postma Library.
This structure is so much more than mere concrete, glass, and books lining endless shelves. For decades, it has served as the silent witness to the late-night grinds, academic breakthroughs, nerves, and triumphs of thousands of students.
We went digging into the archives to see how this iconic building has physically and technologically transformed over the years to remain the beating heart of the student body's academic journey. It sparked an immense wave of nostalgia on our social pages, what are your fondest (or most stressful!) memories of the Ferdinand Postma Library?
May 18: Ethical Fashion on the Bult – For The One Thrift Store
To wrap up a massive Monday, we stopped by a fantastic new initiative on the Bult that makes giving back to the community entirely effortless. We are officially inviting you to go check out the For The One Thrift Store.
Thrifting has taken the world by storm in 2026, but this spot offers a beautiful, purposeful twist. The racks are absolutely packed with A-grade, second-hand clothing items that are in immaculate, near-new condition. It is the absolute ultimate destination to score high-quality, trendy wardrobe upgrades at a fraction of retail pricing.
The real magic, however, lies in the mission behind the business model: every single purchase you make directly funds and supports women navigating severe life crises. By shopping here, you are giving a second life to premium garments while simultaneously providing a lifeline to someone in desperate, bitter need. Head over to the Bult, browse the rails, and look good while doing good!
May 18: Kickstarting Success with Build it
Monday also saw us visiting our favorite hardware experts. The message from the floor was clear and simple this week: whatever project you've been dreaming up as the winter months approach, stop delaying. From foundation layouts to structural renovations, Build it has the stock, the logistics, and the advice to help you start your projects on the right foot.
May 19: Hippo Tracker Update – The Eyes on Oudevlei
Later on Tuesday afternoon, our wildlife tracking team was back on the banks of the river. The entire town is still abuzz talking about our massive, wandering, semi-aquatic "neighbor," and we are determined to keep tabs on his journey!
Given that his previous tracks indicated he was drenteling (strolling) downstream directly toward the town borders, we set up our cameras at Oudevlei, the absolute perfect vantage point to monitor the sweeping waterways for any signs of life.
While our heavy-weight friend decided to play hide-and-seek today, likely submerged deep beneath the water or camouflaged perfectly within the thick river reeds, the entire area remains on a state of high alert. It’s a spectacular reminder of just how closely intertwined our urban lives are with raw African nature here in Potch.
A Timeless Safety Reminder: If you are running, walking, angling, or braaiing near the riverbanks, exercise extreme vigilance. Hippos may look slow and cumbersome on land, but they can charge at a blistering, terrifying speed. Have any of you heard a massive splash or spotted fresh footprints near town in the last 24 hours? Let us know in the comments!
Classic Clash Fever: Gimmies First Teams

are Ready!
Wednesday, May 20th, was entirely dominated by school pride and athletic intensity. The historic annual Classic Clash against Volkies is looming, and The Go-To Guy descended upon the Potchefstroom Gimnasium training grounds to get an exclusive look at how their First Teams are preparing for the ultimate showdown.
The atmosphere at the school was electric, the spangees (team spirit) is sky-high, and the "Witbaadjies" are focused like never before. Crucially, this year the battle moves across town to Volkies’ home turf, adding an extra layer of high-stakes pressure to the fixtures. Here is our sideline report from the Gimmies camp:
First Team Girls Hockey: Fitness and Focus
We sat down with the coach and the captain of the Gimmies First Team Girls Hockey squad right next to the pitch. These ladies are looking incredibly fit, agile, and tactically sharp. They unpacked their rigorous preparation schedule, analyzed the psychological shift of playing on Volkies' astro-track, and shared their strategic blueprint to dominate possession. They are calm, collected, and ready for action.
First Team Boys Hockey: Focused on the Game Plan
Next up, we cornered the leadership of the Gimmies First Team Boys Hockey. The focus in this camp is absolute laser-beams. The boys are highly physical, well-drilled, and hungry to execute a game plan they’ve been perfecting for months. Speaking to the captain, it’s clear they aren't letting the away-crowd noise distract them, they are heading to Volkies' astro with one goal in mind: victory.

First Team Netball: Fitness, Precision, and Heart
The energy shifted to the courts as we caught up with the Gimmies First Team Netball. These ladies are incredibly fit, exceptionally focused, and determined to make every single pass, interception, and goal count on the day. The spangees among the girls is beautiful to see, they are playing as a singular, cohesive unit, and they are ready to leave everything on the court.
First Team Rugby: The Witbaadjies Are Hungry
We wrapped up our massive school sports coverage on the main rugby training field, matching the intense energy of the Gimmies 1st XV Rugby Team. The wait is almost over for the biggest schoolboy rugby match of the calendar year.
We spoke candidly with the coach and captain about their final tactical adjustments, set-piece drills, and how they plan to absorb the immense pressure of the Volkies home crowd. These young men are physically imposing, intensely focused, and downright hungry to leave their hearts on the grass.
To the Community: Head over to our video section to watch the full interview clips with all the captains and coaches. Let us know in the comments: who are you backing to take the crowns this year? Leave your messages of support for the Witbaadjies below!

Stroom Stories May 19: Civic Safety and Unity with the CPF and Farmers' Associations
On Tuesday, we pivoted to a critical live broadcast focusing on the safety, security, and resilience of our local communities. We hosted an in-depth, live panel discussion with three prominent local leaders: Christo de Wet, Awie Barnard, and Murray Deacon.
The conversation zeroed in on the vital, synergistic role played by the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and local Farmers' Associations (Boereverenigings). These organizations form our first line of defense and support.
The guests unpacked how deeply integrated their rural and urban safety networks have become, sharing practical insights on how everyday citizens can get involved, stay informed, and actively participate in building a safer, tighter, and infinitely stronger JB Marks municipality.

From humble beginnings to an absolute transportation powerhouse! This week, we paid respect to the incredible growth of the Extension 7 Taxi Rank. What started as a simple, small local spot has evolved into a massive transit hub that literally keeps our community moving.

Seeing this level of organic economic growth within the township is legendary. Massive respect to the visionaries, drivers, and community members who built this success story from the ground up!
May 21: A Walk Through History at Boiki Tlhapi Clinic
On Thursday, we took a deeply respectful walk through history at the iconic Boiki Tlhapi Clinic.
To many outside the area, it is simply viewed as a prominent geographical landmark. But to the people of Ikageng, this facility represents decades of dedicated care, hope, and community resilience.
It has served as a consistent beacon of health and wellness through changing eras, standing firm as a cornerstone of our local history. We are diving deep into the literal roots of the institutions that shaped us. Drop a ❤️ in our social comments if you or your family have a life story tied to this incredible clinic!
May 21: Reflections at the Extension 6 Aerial Ground
We concluded our historical tour on Thursday afternoon by visiting the legendary Extension 6 Aerial Ground.
There is an old saying: “You can’t truly know where you’re going until you fully appreciate exactly where you stand.” The Aerial Ground holds a staggering volume of historical narratives, sporting memories, and community gatherings that have shaped generations of Ikageng residents.
We brought our cameras along to capture the quiet power of the space today. What is your all-time favorite memory of this iconic spot? Let’s get the conversation started in the comments!
