Today, communities around the world mark World Environment Day, the largest international day dedicated to environmental protection, observed annually on the 5th of June. Since its inception in 1973, this UN Day, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), has galvanized action from governments, businesses, communities, and individuals across more than 150 countries. The day serves as a global rallying cry to safeguard and restore our planet, making it a critical moment for collective action.

This year, the theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution,” shining a spotlight on one of the most pressing (and fixable) environmental challenges of our time. The Republic of Korea is hosting the global celebrations, with events taking place worldwide to tackle plastic pollution head-on.
Plastic Pollution: A Global Crisis
Plastic has become ingrained in every facet of modern life. From packaging to textiles, it’s ubiquitous. However, its impact on the environment and human health is staggering. According to UNEP, plastic production has skyrocketed from 2 million tons in 1950 to over 430 million tons today, with a significant portion being single-use plastics that are discarded after just one use. This waste often finds its way into rivers, oceans, soil, and even our own bodies.

Each year, an estimated 11 million tons of plastic waste leak into aquatic ecosystems. Microplastics have been detected from the deepest trenches of the ocean to the highest mountain peaks, and alarmingly, within the human bloodstream. The social and environmental cost of plastic pollution is estimated to be between US$300 billion and US$600 billion annually, as it fuels the triple planetary crisis: climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

Real Solutions for Real Change
While the scale of the plastic crisis is immense, solutions are within reach. That’s why this year’s World Environment Day is aligned with UNEP’s global campaign #BeatPlasticPollution, urging individuals, industries, and nations to refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink their relationship with plastic.

The campaign is also a timely reminder of the global commitment made in 2022 to end plastic pollution through an international treaty. Following the November 2024 negotiations in the Republic of Korea, the treaty discussions will continue in Geneva, Switzerland from 5 to 14 August 2025. These talks offer a once-in-a-generation opportunity to forge legally binding agreements that can drive systemic, global change.
Join the Movement
From grassroots clean-up events to corporate sustainability pledges, World Environment Day is a call to action for everyone. You can participate by hosting or joining events in your community, supporting sustainable brands, or simply making lifestyle changes that reduce your plastic footprint. Add your voice to the global movement: list your event on the 2025 World Environment Day map and share your impact online using the hashtag #BeatPlasticPollution.

This year, the campaign also aims to draw inspiration from nature, showcasing real-world solutions and innovations that replace plastic with sustainable alternatives. From seaweed-based packaging to refillable systems, the transition away from plastic is not only necessary, it’s possible.

A Healthier Future Is Within Reach
World Environment Day 2025 is more than a celebration, it’s a wake-up call. The plastic crisis is a clear and present danger to our ecosystems, our wildlife, and our health. But it is also a challenge we can overcome, together.

Let this day mark the beginning of a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable world. Because when we unite to beat plastic pollution, we not only protect the planet, we protect ourselves.
