Rasistiese of seksistiese goed? Vergeet daarvan. Gehalte tel, drama nie. Kosstalletjies? - Urgent intervention sought as Witrand Psychiatric Hospital struggles with mounting infrastructure failures
A laundry pile-up, three-year boiler outage and security blind spots have pushed Witrand Psychiatric Hospital to “crisis point”, according to a 7 July oversight report by the Democratic Alliance (DA). The party has written to North West Health MEC Sello Lehari demanding that the province step in, saying the hospital’s own budget and procurement rules cannot cover the repairs. Image: DA Oversight visit highlights critical shortfalls During a 2 July site inspection, DA MPL Hendriëtte van Huyssteen found that only one small and one large industrial washing machine and three tumble-dryers remain operational, creating a backlog of dirty linen that now spills into corridors. Staff have been loading laundry onto trucks and transporting it 50–150 km to Klerksdorp or Mahikeng, an “unsustainable” stop-gap that still leaves wards short of clean bedding and gowns. Laundry backlog raises hygiene risks Hospital workers told the delegation that a full wash cycle now produces more wet linen than the dryers can handle, forcing them to stack soiled bags wherever space is available. Without adequate linen rotation, infection-control protocols are increasingly difficult to maintain for Witrand’s 450-plus mental-health and intellectual-disability patients. Image: DA Boiler breakdown leaves wards cold Industrial boilers that once powered roller irons, produced kitchen steam and piped hot water to wards have been out of service for roughly three years. Kitchen staff rely on gas burners, 43 electric geysers have been procured for basic washing needs, and patient rooms cannot be heated during winter nights when temperatures in Potchefstroom routinely fall below 2 °C. Security blind spots in food areas The DA report notes a complete absence of CCTV cameras in food-production and delivery bays, warning that any theft “is food that never reaches an already vulnerable patient cohort”. The party wants camera installation fast-tracked through provincial supply-chain channels. Image: DA Provincial purse strings hold the key Because the necessary equipment, industrial washers, dryers, boilers and surveillance systems, exceeds the hospital’s procurement ceiling, all replacements must be funded and sourced by the North West Department of Health. The DA argues that continued delays breach both the Patient Rights Charter and the Disability Rights Charter, which guarantee safe, dignified care. Department already facing separate probe Witrand has been under heightened scrutiny since MEC Lehari ordered a nine-member investigation panel on 25 June following the death of a long-term patient and allegations of neglect. The panel’s mandate runs until 1 August 2025, with findings to inform possible disciplinary or criminal action. The department previously issued a 9 May media release defending its management of Witrand but acknowledging “maintenance backlogs” and the need for capital upgrades across specialised hospitals. Image: DA Unions and civil society add pressure Healthcare unions have since called on the province to widen the investigation, saying chronic understaffing, poor infrastructure and safety lapses extend well beyond a single fatality and facility. “These are systemic issues that need urgent attention,” a spokesperson said on 30 June. While politicians trade blame and investigations proceed, patients at Witrand Psychiatric Hospital continue to sleep under unwashed sheets in unheated wards. For families and frontline staff, the real test will be whether provincial coffers and political will, arrive before winter’s coldest nights do. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #potchgazette #stroomstories #DA #Newstalk

- Scam Alert in JB Marks: Residents Targeted by Electricity Disconnection Fraud
As digital scams become increasingly sophisticated, residents across JB Marks Local Municipality are urged to remain vigilant. A concerning trend involving fake electricity disconnection notices has been reported more frequently, prompting warnings from local community groups and ward councillors. Image: The Go-To Guy Creation ⚠️ How the Scam Works Several residents have reported receiving WhatsApp messages, calls, or even SMS's from individuals posing as municipal officials. These scammers claim the resident’s property is on the verge of being disconnected due to unpaid electricity bills. Victims are told they can avoid disconnection by immediately providing proof of payment (POP) to a specific bank account or by sending money via eWallet . The scammer often provides alarming urgency, claiming disconnection will occur within hours unless the payment is made. 📩 Fake Communication Examples Scammers are known to include personal details such as a street address or an outstanding amount to make their claims more believable. A commonly reported message reads: “Good day, it's [Name] from JB Marks Local Municipality, in regard to a scheduled disconnection for property on [Street], Miederpark, Potchefstroom, 2530 because of arrears on the municipal account. We tried calling earlier but your phone went to voicemail. We'll be at the premises in the next 2 hours.” Such messages are designed to create panic and encourage hurried action without verification. ✅ How to Stay Safe The Municipality does not notify residents by phone or WhatsApp that they are on the disconnection list, nor does it request payments through unofficial banking channels or mobile wallets like eWallet. Instead, residents are advised to verify their account status and payment history via the official platform :🔗 https://jbmarks.cabedocs.com/ This secure portal provides access to: Your latest municipal bill Valid JB Marks banking details Proper channels for payment confirmation If in doubt, residents should speak directly to a ward councillor or visit the municipal offices. 📣 What to Do If You Are Contacted If you receive suspicious messages or calls: Do not send money Do not share your personal information Report the incident immediately to your local ward councillor or trusted municipal contact If possible, take a screenshot of the scam attempt and forward it for official reporting. 📌 Final Thoughts With reports of these fraudulent schemes increasing, awareness is key . Scammers rely on fear and confusion to succeed. By staying informed, verifying all claims through official platforms, and sharing information with neighbors, residents can collectively protect themselves and their communities. Stay cautious. Stay connected. And always verify before you pay. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #potchgazette #JBMarks #Scamalert
- SARS Tax Season 2025: Full List of Changes and Key Dates
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) headquarters in Pretoria. South Africa’s 2025 Tax Season officially launched on 7 July 2025, marking the start of SARS’s new auto-assessment rollout for individual taxpayers This year, the revenue service has introduced a slate of updates aimed at modernising the tax filing process and making it easier for taxpayers to comply with their obligations. From new auto-filing procedures to technical changes in tax law, it’s important for taxpayers to familiarize themselves with what’s new to avoid surprises when filing their returns. In this article, we break down all the key dates and changes announced for the 2025 filing season in a neutral, informative tone. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Important Tax Season 2025 Dates SARS has outlined the critical dates for the 2025 Personal Income Tax Filing Season . Auto-assessment notices will go out first, followed by staggered deadlines for different taxpayer categories sars.gov.za : Tax Return Category Open Close Auto-Assessments 7 Jul 2025 20 Jul 2025 Individual filers (non-provisional) 21 Jul 2025 20 Oct 2025 Provisional taxpayers 21 Jul 2025 19 Jan 2026 Trusts 19 Sep 2025 19 Jan 2026 These dates mean that starting 21 July 2025 , all taxpayers, including individuals, provisional taxpayers, and trusts, can begin filing manually if needed (after the auto-assessment phase ends on 20 July). SARS advises taxpayers to wait for their SMS or email notification of an auto-assessment result before logging in to file; those notices will indicate if SARS has calculated your tax automatically . You can check your auto-assessment status on eFiling or the SARS MobiApp once notified . Expansion of Auto-Assessments to Provisional Taxpayers One of the biggest changes this season is the expansion of SARS’s auto-assessment program . In previous years, auto-assessments were mostly limited to non-provisional taxpayers (like formal employees whose tax info comes from third parties). For 2025, certain provisional taxpayers are now eligible for auto-assessment as well , significantly widening the net news.howmzansi.co.za . SARS will identify qualifying provisional taxpayers and invite them to opt into the auto-assessment process. To facilitate this, SARS introduced a new “Provisional Taxpayer Auto Assessment Request” service on its Online Query System. This allows eligible provisional taxpayers (who receive an invitation notification) to request inclusion in the auto-assessment pool for 2025 sars.gov.za . In short, if you’re a provisional taxpayer and SARS considers your data sufficient for an automatic calculation, you might receive an invite and can choose to be auto-assessed instead of filing a normal return. Auto-assessment notices will be issued in batches from 7 July up to 20 July. If you’re selected, you’ll get an SMS or email alert with the outcome of your assessment. Be sure to review the details: you can log into SARS eFiling or the SARS MobiApp to view the calculation and decide whether to accept it or edit and submit a corrected return by the deadline . Remember that accepting an auto-assessment is binding , so it’s wise to double-check that all your income and deductions are accounted for before you agree . If anything is missing (for example, certain donations or expenses that SARS’s data didn’t include), you have the option to file a manual correction instead of simply accepting . Fraud Warnings and Scam Vigilance As with any tax season, taxpayers should remain vigilant against scams . SARS has warned that criminal activity tends to increase during the filing period, with fraudsters attempting to exploit taxpayers via phishing emails, SMS scams, and other fraudulent schemes Standard Bank and other institutions have also cautioned that scam attempts will be elevated as tax season opens . Taxpayers are advised to be extra careful with any communication claiming to be from SARS. Always verify unexpected messages or requests for personal information. SARS will never ask for passwords or banking details via email or SMS, and you should avoid clicking on links in unsolicited messages saica.org.za . In stead, use official channels: log in directly to SARS eFiling or the MobiApp to check your tax status, and contact SARS or your tax advisor if you receive any suspicious correspondence. By staying alert and informed you can protect yourself from fraud during the 2025 filing season. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations New Rules for South African Expats and Tax Residency Another notable change in 2025 involves South African expatriates and tax residency status. SARS is placing greater emphasis on tracking when individuals cease or resume tax residency in South Africa. Expats who have returned to South Africa (or plan to) must now declare if they have reinstated their South African tax residency status. The SARS registration and profile update form (RAV01) has been enhanced to include a field where a taxpayer who previously emigrated can record the date they became a tax resident again in South Africa. This new “Reinstatement Date of RSA Tax Residency” declaration makes it clear to SARS when an expat is officially back in the tax net. Equally important, expats who are currently non-resident should double-check that they formally noted the cessation of their tax residency with SARS. If you left the country in the past but never informed SARS that you ceased to be a tax resident , SARS might still regard you as a resident for tax purposes sundayindependent.co.za . In practice, failing to follow the formal process to cease tax residency means you remain liable for South African tax on your worldwide income until properly classified as a non-resident. The new reinstatement disclosure is a reminder that the onus is on taxpayers to keep their residency status updated. Those who do not intend to restore their South African tax residency should ensure they’ve completed the required cessation declaration; otherwise, they could face complications (and potential tax bills) if they ever return or if SARS reviews their status. In line with this focus, SARS has also changed how the annual tax return forms work for residents vs. non-residents. Tax returns are now tailored based on your residency status (Section 9H) . When you start your 2025 tax return on eFiling, the system will present either a “resident” or “non-resident” version of the ITR12 income tax return (and the provisional tax IRP6 form) depending on what SARS has on record for your status . For example, if you are marked as an RSA tax resident, you’ll see the normal resident questionnaire; if you’re a non-resident, the form will adapt to ask the right questions for non-residents . Taxpayers who changed residency during the tax year will be presented with both sets of questions to cover the period before and after the change . This change helps ensure the correct disclosure of income based on residency, and it goes hand-in-hand with SARS’s efforts to close loopholes and enforce compliance among expats sundayindependent.co.za . Full List of Filing and Legislative Changes for 2025 Beyond the process updates above, SARS published a full list of technical changes to tax laws and return forms that are in effect for the 2025 year of assessment. Below is a breakdown of all the significant changes that individual taxpayers should be aware of in this filing season: Foreign Tax Credits on Capital Gains (Section 6quat): If you paid tax on a capital gain in another country, Section 6quat now lets you fully credit those foreign taxes against South African tax on the same gain . In other words, you won’t be double-taxed on capital gains. Moreover, starting from the 2025 tax year, any unused foreign tax credits can be carried forward for up to six years to offset future tax liabilities sars.gov.za . This is a taxpayer-friendly change allowing more effective use of foreign tax credits . New Reporting Codes for Employer Deductions (Sections 11(nA) & 11(nB)): Employers must now report certain deductible expenses paid on behalf of employees under specific codes on tax certificates. Section 11(nA) (typically covering relocation or transfer expenses) will reflect on IRP5/IT3(a) with source code 4042 , and Section 11(nB) (other qualifying employer-paid expenses) will use new source code 4058 in the “Other Deductions” field sars.gov.za . These changes mean your IRP5 will show these items explicitly, and the ITR12 return form is updated to accept the new codes . Labour Brokers Classified as Provisional Taxpayers: Effective 1 March 2025, any labour broker who has an approved SARS tax exemption certificate (i.e. they’re not subject to PAYE withholding by clients) is now included in the definition of a “provisional taxpayer.” sars.gov.za . Such individuals must register and file provisional tax returns (IRP6) just like other provisional taxpayers (e.g. freelancers or small business owners). This change closes a gap , ensuring labor brokers pay provisional tax and don’t fall through the cracks simply because they have an exemption certificate . Extension of Learnership Tax Incentive (Section 12H): The tax break for formal learnership programs (usually claimed by employers for training and upskilling workers) has been extended . The Section 12H learnership allowance, which was set to expire on 1 April 2024, will now run until 31 March 2027 sars.gov.za . Employers can continue to enter qualifying learnership agreements and claim these incentives for three additional years . Claiming Interest Expenses on Foreign Income: In line with Practice Note 31 , SARS has updated the return to allow a claim for interest expenses incurred to produce foreign interest income . On the ITR12, within the “Foreign Interest” section, there’s now a specific line to enter any allowable interest expense you want to deduct against your foreign interest earned sars.gov.za . This helps taxpayers accurately report net foreign interest income, just as they would for local interest. New Tax Codes for Backdated Salary and Pension Payments: If you received a backdated (antedated) salary or pension , it will now be reported under dedicated new source codes. Code 3623 and Code 3673 have been introduced on the ITR12 return to cover retroactive salary and pension amounts respectively sars.gov.za . This ensures such payments, often arising from delayed salary increases or pension adjustments, are taxed correctly and distinctly from regular current-year income. Deceased Estates – Interest Exemption Dates (Section 10(1)(i)): Executors of deceased estates have a new reporting requirement when declaring interest income for the estate. If interest accrued after the taxpayer’s date of death, the executor can now specify the “Interest Earned From” and “Interest Earned To” dates in the return sars.gov.za . This allows SARS to correctly apply the Section 10(1)(i) interest exemption (which has an annual limit) across the relevant tax years. In practice, interest earned after death but paid later can span tax years, and this change ensures the exemption is prorated correctly for the portion falling outside the year of death . Exempt Dividends – Separate Local and Foreign Codes: Two new codes have been added to distinguish tax-exempt dividends . Local dividends that are exempt (e.g. most South African company dividends, which are usually subject to withholding tax instead) will be recorded under source code 4306 , and foreign dividends that are exempt (for instance under double-taxation agreements or the R1.25 million foreign income exemption for residents) will use source code 4307 sars.gov.za . While dividends aren’t typically part of taxable income if the proper taxes were withheld, these codes help SARS track such amounts in the “Non-Taxable Income” section of the return . Trust Income for Community of Property Spouses: For taxpayers who are married in community of property and receive income from a trust, SARS will now automatically apply the 50/50 split of that trust income between spouses. Previously, income splitting in community property cases applied to passive income like interest or rental income. Now trust distributions will be treated similarly: half the income will be allocated to each spouse in the assessment by SARS (assuming both are South African tax residents). This update, effective for the 2025 tax year, ensures correct taxation of trust income according to marital property law . Delayed Carry-Over of Unused Deductions/Balances: If you had excess deductible amounts from prior years (such as unclaimed Section 11F retirement contributions , Section 18A donations , or assessed losses under Section 20) that you expected to carry into 2025, be aware of a procedural change. SARS will not automatically apply carry-over amounts on your initial assessment if your current return is flagged for verification . In such cases, the assessment (ITA34) will include a note indicating that the carry-forward wasn’t applied because the return is under review . Once the verification is completed , SARS will adjust the assessment to include the carried over amounts . Essentially, if you’re selected for audit or verification, any prior-year balances will only reflect after you clear the review process. Simplified Bank Detail Updates: SARS has enhanced the way taxpayers update their banking information . In the past, changing your bank details on eFiling meant manually entering the new account info, which was prone to typos or required visiting a branch for verification. Starting in 2025, when you use the Registration/Amendments form (RAV01) or update bank details on your ITR12, you will be presented with a list of your verified bank accounts already on record with SARS. You simply select the correct account from the list instead of retyping it. This not only saves time but helps prevent errors. It’s part of SARS’s push to improve user experience and security, ensuring that refunds go to a pre-verified account on file. SARS’s Modernisation Vision: All these changes align with SARS’s broader strategy to become a “smart, modern tax authority” that is trusted and easy to engage with sars.gov.za . The revenue service has stated it is working hard to simplify compliance for taxpayers while maintaining the integrity of the tax system . The 2025 Filing Season updates, from automated assessments and convenient eFiling features to stricter monitoring of residency and income declarations, reflect SARS’s commitment to leveraging technology and data to improve tax collection and reduce fraud. Final Thought In summary, the 2025 tax season in South Africa comes with significant changes that every taxpayer should note. Key dates have been set for auto-assessments and filings, and SARS is expanding its use of automated assessments to more taxpayers than ever On the legal and administrative front, numerous tweaks, from foreign income tax credit rules to new tax return codes and reporting requirements , are now in effect. These adjustments are designed to streamline the filing process, close loopholes, and make the tax system more efficient. As a taxpayer, being informed is your first step to staying compliant. Make sure to check if you’ve been auto-assessed , and if so, review the outcome carefully before accepting it. If you’re filing a return, incorporate the new codes or information where applicable (for instance, if you have foreign income or special deductions). Double-check your tax residency status if you’ve been working abroad, and update SARS if necessary to avoid any misunderstandings about your obligations . Lastly, remain alert to potential scams, SARS and banks warn that fraudsters will try to take advantage of the busy filing season Only trust information from official SARS channels or reputable news sources. By understanding the changes outlined above, you can file your 2025 tax return with confidence. SARS’s goal is to make compliance easier through automation and clarity, but it’s up to each individual to ensure their return is accurate and complete. With the tax season underway, now is the time to get your documents in order, seek professional advice if needed, and take advantage of the tools SARS provides to simplify tax filing. Knowledge and vigilance are your best tools for a smooth tax season. Good luck with your 2025 filings, and remember: when in doubt, consult SARS’s official Tax Season guidelines or a qualified tax professional to steer you in the right direction. #TheGoToGuy #Gazette #stroomstories #taxseason #newstalk
- Wedding Dress Shopping for Unpredictable Weather in Potchefstroom
Planning a Potchefstroom wedding means preparing for changeable weather. Local couples often experience “four seasons in one day”, so choosing the right wedding gown requires flexibility. Start by checking climate trends for your chosen season. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Potchefstroom summers can be hot and rainy, while spring and autumn days can swing between warm sunshine and sudden cold breezes. Knowing what the forecast might hold helps you pick a dress that keeps you comfortable in sun or drizzle. For example, one bridal guide notes that picking suitable attire for variable weather “ensures not only the comfort of the bride… but also contributes to the overall success of the event”. With a clear weather plan in mind, you can shop confidently for a gown that works in any condition. Choose Fabrics Wisely Light, breathable fabrics are ideal when the sun might peek through. Fabrics like chiffon, georgette or organza are soft and flowy, allowing air to circulate and helping keep you cool . Chiffon in particular is “delicate, lightweight” and often chosen for outdoor or warm-weather ceremonies . In Potchefstroom’s warm spells, a chiffon overlay or a gown cut from lightweight crepe can make a hot day much more comfortable. By contrast, always have a warmer backup. If a chill front rolls in, a heavier fabric gown (such as satin, mikado or velvet) provides natural insulation. In fact, wedding planners recommend “heavier fabrics such as velvet or satin” for colder months because they add warmth and structure . Even if you don’t commit to a fully heavy gown, you might mix medium-weight fabrics (like crepe) with layers of tulle or lace. In short, avoid extremes: don’t pick the heaviest gown if spring showers are possible, and don’t choose a completely open, sheer dress if the weather could snap cold. A mid-weight, layered look often hits the sweet spot. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Dress Style and Details Once you’ve narrowed fabrics, consider gown silhouette and coverage. A long flowing skirt (A-line or ball gown) can look dramatic in the outdoors, but beware of very long trains in mud or rain – they’re harder to keep clean. You might opt for a dress with a detachable train or a manageable bustle. Similarly, a very tight mermaid gown may catch on grass or puddles, so test the hem length on uneven ground when shopping. Sleeves and necklines are key choices in uncertain weather. For example, dresses with 3/4-length or long sleeves offer a bit of extra warmth on a windy day without overheating you once the sun returns . (One seasonal style guide specifically recommends 3/4 sleeves as a “comfortable but stylish option for unpredictable weather”.) Off-the-shoulder or strapless gowns can still work, but in those cases plan a backup , a cover-up or bolero , for when the temperature drops. In cooler conditions, a full long-sleeved gown made of heavier material can be paired with a shawl for a very cozy look . Keep in mind that sleeves add warmth, but even a strapless dress can become practical if you bring the right accessories. Layering and Accessories It helps to shop with layers in mind. Always try on your dress with potential cover-ups (such as a bolero, shrug or wrap) and even rain-gear to see how everything pairs together. Bringing a matching shawl or cropped jacket lets you adapt on the fly , one moment you’re glamorous in your gown, the next you’re sliding on a knit cardigan to ward off a chill. Designers and stylists frequently remind brides to prepare “cozy cover-ups” for unpredictable weather . Boleros, lace capelets, pashminas or even a chic trench coat can complement a simple gown without ruining the look . For instance, some couples set out pretty pashminas or wraps in a basket for guests, and you can do the same for the bridal party. Umbrellas and hats are also functional accessories. A clear umbrella or light parasol protects you and your dress from rain, and in bright sun a parasol can prevent a sunburn or overheating. These props can even enhance photos , in gloomy weather the raincoat-and-umbrella shots can be quite romantic. In short, always have an umbrella at the ready, just in case. When it rains, flip out the umbrella and you stay dry; if the sun suddenly appears, you can shade your face and shoulders. Carrying a small foldable umbrella during photos or the outdoor ceremony is a simple step that keeps your gown pristine. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Key Considerations and Tips Know the forecast: Potchefstroom’s weather can change rapidly, so watch the forecast in the days before your wedding. If possible, plan for both extremes (e.g., pack both a light shawl and a parasol). Keep in mind that even “nice” days might start chilly and become hot by afternoon. Pick adaptable fabrics: Choose fabrics that work in both warm and cool conditions. Breathable, moisture-wicking materials (chiffon, organza, light lace) will keep you cool on hot spell s. Similarly, pick a heavier option (like crepe or velvet) if you expect cold winds . Avoid very stiff satin if you think you’ll get sweaty , stick to lighter, stretchier weaves if needed. Style for versatility: Think about sleeves and straps. Three-quarter or long sleeves can be stylish and practical for blustery weather . If you love a strapless or sleeveless style, plan to layer it with a bolero, shrug or wrap when needed. Also consider details like length and train – a knee-length dress or one with a bustle is easier to manage in mud than a sweep-train. Plan your accessories: Bring complementary cover-ups (boleros, shawls, capes) that match the dress fabric . Keep an elegant raincoat or an umbrella on hand. Some brides stash a pair of flat shoes for ceremonies on grass or move indoors quickly if a shower starts. These extras let you stay gorgeous and comfortable. Think practical: On shopping trips, try your dress with all these items. Wear the shoes and layers you’d use on the wedding day and walk around (even on uneven floor if possible). This way you can spot any issues (tightness, length problems) before the big day. Having an emergency kit in your car (spanx, scissors for threads, clear nail polish for run-on stockings) is also smart. In unpredictable weather, a little preparation goes a long way. With the right fabric and outfit plan, even a sudden rainstorm or heatwave won’t spoil your look or comfort. By choosing the dress and accessories carefully, as local experts advise, you’ll be ready for sun or storm. Then you can focus on celebrating, knowing you’ll look beautiful no matter what the skies bring. Dress Shops in Potchefstroom
- The Hidden Dangers of Illegal Electricity Connections, How Orka Solar Can Help.
Ever noticed a tangle of wires hooked up to a power pole and thought, "That looks dodgy"? Illegal electricity connections, often called “izinyoka” (snakes) in our communities, might seem like a quick fix for getting power. We get it: electricity is expensive, loadshedding is frustrating, and not everyone has access to reliable power. It’s no surprise some people "tap" into the grid unofficially to keep the lights on. But make no mistake, playing with electricity like this is playing with fire (sometimes literally). The dangers lurking behind these illegal hookups are very real and can affect your life, your neighbors, and the whole community. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations What Exactly Is an Illegal Connection? An illegal electricity connection is any power hookup made without approval or a meter, basically connecting to Eskom’s grid or a municipal supply on the sly . This could mean throwing a cable over a pole, tampering with a meter, or bypassing the wiring to steal electricity. These connections are usually done by unqualified people using makeshift wiring. You’ll see extension cords and wires strung across trees or rooftops, sometimes running along the ground or over fences. Because they aren’t installed by pros, they have no proper insulation or safety. In township slang, “izinyoka” cables snake their way through settlements, feeding homes with free power but at a steep hidden cost. Did you know? In South Africa, hooking up electricity illegally is not just against the law, it’s also extremely dangerous. It’s often the innocent who pay the price. Children playing outside have been tragically electrocuted after touching or tripping over exposed wires . Even roofs, gutters or washing lines can become live if they touch these crude wires, turning everyday objects into shock hazards . Scary, right? Why Do People Do It? Let’s be real, nobody wakes up and wants to risk death or jail for electricity. Illegal connections are usually born out of desperation or frustration. In many informal settlements and rural areas, people aren’t officially connected to the grid. When it’s freezing cold in winter or dark at night, and there’s an easy live wire nearby, it’s tempting to “help yourself” to power. Times are tough, Eskom’s prices go up, and loadshedding leaves us in the dark for hours. Some folks figure an illegal connection is the only way to keep the TV on for the soccer game or to boil a kettle without waiting for the lights to come back. While we understand the reasons, it’s important to remember that this shortcut comes with life-threatening risks and long-term consequences. Let’s unpack the hidden dangers of illegal connections, and why that “free” electricity isn’t worth it in the end. The Hidden Dangers of Illegal Electricity Connections ⚡ Illegal connections might give you light and heat in the short term, but they bring along a whole lot of trouble. Here are the major dangers to know about: ⚡ Electrocution and Shock: This is danger number one. Exposed live wires can shock or kill anyone who touches them, and it’s often kids who are victims, unknowingly playing or walking near these wires . Even adults just going about their day can step on or brush against a hidden wire and get a deadly jolt. The human body isn’t made to handle high voltage, and illegal hookups usually lack any insulation or proper joints. One wrong touch and you could be seriously injured or worse. It’s heartbreaking that people have lost their lives this way, all for a bit of power. 🔥 Fire Hazards: Poor wiring and overloading go hand-in-hand with illegal connections. The wires used are often substandard, think thin cables joined with tape, and they carry more power than they safely can. The result? They heat up and can spark fires in homes or shacks. If multiple houses are drawing heavy loads (heaters, stoves, etc.) on a single makeshift line, it’s a recipe for an electrical fire outbreak . An overloaded cable can turn your home into an inferno in minutes, especially in tightly packed areas where one burning shack can spread fire to many others. Imagine losing all your belongings, or worse, your family, to a fire caused by a dodgy connection. It’s a very real risk. 💡 Power Outages for Everyone: Here’s an irony, stealing electricity often leaves everyone without electricity. Illegal connections overload transformers and substations, causing them to trip or even break down . These systems are designed to handle a certain number of homes; when dozens of extra illegal lines draw power, the equipment can’t cope . That means the whole area plunges into darkness when the local grid crashes. So, while one household tries to dodge the meter, the whole neighbourhood might end up in an unscheduled blackout. We already have scheduled load-shedding, nobody wants additional outages because the transformer blew up from overload! Plus, the flickering and surges from overloaded lines can damage appliances in legitimate households nearby . Your fridge, TV, or phone charger could get fried due to someone else’s illegal hookup. Not cool, right? 💸 Financial Costs and Higher Bills: You might think, “Eskom has lots of power, they won’t miss a few kilowatts.” But add up thousands of illegal connections across the country and the theft is massive. Eskom estimates it loses billions of rand each year due to illegal electricity theft . That’s money that could have improved infrastructure or kept tariffs a bit lower. Instead, honest paying customers often end up footing the bill as utilities try to recover losses. In other words, electricity theft can push prices up for everyone else. It also makes our load-shedding situation worse, the more power is drawn illegally, the bigger the gap between supply and demand, which can contribute to deeper outages. In the long run, the whole economy suffers from power theft (businesses can’t operate reliably) and taxpayers might bear the cost of replacing burnt-out equipment. So, illegal connections aren’t a victimless crime, we all pay , one way or another. 🚓 Legal Consequences: Let’s not forget, hooking up electricity illegally is straight-up crime. In South Africa it’s often treated as theft and tampering with infrastructure. If you’re caught with an illegal connection or meter bypass, you can face heavy fines, Eskom has been known to slap a ~R6,000 tampering fine per offence . They will also cut you off immediately (of course). In some cases, repeat offenders or those stealing on a large scale can go to jail . There have been crackdowns in many towns, officials do sweeps to remove izinyoka lines, sometimes under police guard because it can get tense. It’s just not worth the risk of getting a criminal record. And think about this: if an illegal connection in your yard causes someone’s death, you could even face manslaughter or culpable homicide charges. The law does not look kindly on this dangerous practice. 👥 Community Impact: Illegal connections often seem like a personal issue (“I just want lights in my house”), but they affect the whole community. We’ve already mentioned how they cause area-wide outages and fires. They also damage public infrastructure , every time a cable is stolen or a transformer is bypassed, that’s equipment that must be repaired or replaced using public funds. Moreover, when officials come to remove illegal lines, it can create conflict between residents and authorities, sometimes even violent clashes. Communities can become divided between those who pay and those who connect illegally. There’s also a stigma: areas known for rampant illegal connections might face slower service upgrades, because utility workers fear going in. All in all, it slows down progress for everyone. Safer Alternatives to Illegal Connections So, what can one do if you’re not officially connected, or you’re tired of blackouts? The only safe way to get electricity is through legal means. This might involve applying to your municipality or Eskom for a new connection. Yes, it can be a slow process, but it’s worth it. There are also community programmes in some areas (like Operation Khanyisa in the past) that helped residents get legal power with prepaid meters. Pushing for those programs in your area can help bring legit electricity to more homes. Another bright idea is to consider renewable energy solutions. Solar power, for example, is becoming more popular in South Africa. Instead of risking life and limb hooking to the grid, one could invest in solar panels or solar home systems. Companies like Orka Solar are helping many families in Potchefstroom and beyond to power their homes safely and legally with sunshine. With a proper solar setup, you generate your own electricity during the day and can store some in batteries for night. It’s safe, it’s legal, and it even keeps the lights on during load-shedding. Plus, you might save money in the long run on bills. While the upfront cost can be significant, there are financing options and it pays for itself over time – more importantly, no one has to worry about electrocution or fires with a professionally installed solar system. If solar isn’t an option yet, using alternative fuels safely (like gas for cooking or heating) might reduce how much electricity you need to “borrow.” But never, ever resort to connecting wires yourself or paying some unqualified person to do it under cover of night. It’s just not worth it. Let’s Keep Our Communities Safe At the end of the day, we all want reliable electricity and a safer community. Illegal connections might seem like a quick fix to the electricity crisis, but they create more crises in the long run, from deadly accidents to burnt-out homes and prolonged blackouts. By avoiding these dangerous hookups, and reporting them if you see them, you could save a life. Eskom even has a hotline (08600 ESKOM) to anonymously report illegal connections . It’s not about getting someone in trouble; it’s about preventing a potential tragedy and keeping the lights on for everyone. So next time you see those makeshift wires or hear someone considering an illegal connection, speak up. Share a story of the dangers or point them to safer solutions like talking to Eskom or looking into solar with folks like Orka Solar. Sometimes people just don’t realize how serious the risks are. Let’s rather work together as a community to find safe, legal ways to deal with our electricity challenges. Whether it’s lobbying for better service, going solar, or simply using electricity sparingly, there’s always a better option than risking lives. Electricity is a wonderful thing, it brightens our homes and our lives, but only if we respect it and handle it the right way. Stay safe, stay legal, and let’s keep the lights shining bright in Mzansi! #SolarEnergySA #GoSolarWithOrka #OrkaSolar #SolarPowerSolutions #RenewableEnergySA #SolarForEveryone #NoMoreLoadShedding #CleanEnergyZA #SolarSmartLiving #OffGridLiving

- THASA Potchefstroom: Elevating Skills, Innovation & Community Impact
Situated in the vibrant university town of Potchefstroom, The Hair Academy of South Africa (THASA) continues to cement its reputation as a leading training ground for the country’s next generation of hair professionals. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations June 2025 was no exception: alongside its ongoing accredited programmes, THASA rolled out a series of short courses, hands-on workshops, and community outreach initiatives designed to keep both students and local salon owners at the cutting edge of industry trends. A Solid Foundation: THASA’s Core Offerings Since its founding in 2008, THASA has provided a comprehensive curriculum that spans from foundational hairdressing certificates to internationally recognised City & Guilds diplomas. The academy’s safe, homely campus, located on the grounds of Potchefstroom Technical High School, boasts air-conditioned salon floors and fully equipped classrooms, ensuring students receive both theoretical grounding and practical, real-world experience. Accreditation by SETA and QCTO further underscores the value of a THASA qualification in salons across South Africa and beyond. Mid-Year Momentum: June Short Courses June kicked off with a burst of energy as THASA launched its Hair Styling Short Course on 20 June. Over two intensive days, participants learned advanced cutting and styling techniques directly from seasoned platform artists, skills designed to elevate everyday salon services into bespoke, client-specific creations. By focusing on both classic and contemporary looks, the course catered to beginners eager for a strong foundation and experienced stylists looking to refine their craft. Just days later, the Academy introduced a Master the Art of Sugaring workshop, teaching the all-natural hair-removal method that’s sweeping modern salons. Attendees practiced the delicate sugar paste application, skin preparation protocols, and post-treatment care, all vital to delivering a comfortable, effective experience for clients seeking alternative waxing options. This workshop not only expanded student skillsets but also opened doors for salon owners to diversify their service menus with a sought-after technique. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Empowering Through Community Engagement Beyond technical training, THASA has always emphasised community involvement. In June, senior students partnered with local women’s shelters to offer free basic hairstyling clinics, teaching confidence-boosting haircare routines and providing complimentary trims and styling. These outreach sessions underscored THASA’s commitment to social upliftment, allowing students to hone interpersonal skills while giving back to Potchefstroom’s broader community. Recognising Excellence: Student Achievements Academic support remains a cornerstone of the THASA experience. Throughout June, the academy celebrated its top performers with monthly awards for “Best Theory Student” and “Most Creative Stylist,” encouraging healthy competition and highlighting individual progress. Winners received not only certificates but also mentorship sessions with THASA’s panel of industry veterans, further reinforcing the academy’s “family” atmosphere. Looking Ahead: Next Intake and Open Days With June’s short courses wrapping up, THASA is already preparing for its July intake. Prospective students are invited to an Open Day on Saturday, 12 July, where they can tour the facilities, meet instructors, and participate in live demonstrations. This introductory event aims to demystify the path to a hairdressing career and answer questions about accreditation, accommodation options, and financial assistance. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Why Choose THASA? Accredited Programmes: From beginner to advanced levels, THASA’s qualifications are recognised by SETA and QCTO, ensuring your skills meet national industry standards. Hands-On Training: Air-conditioned salon floors and real-client practice prepare you for the fast-paced salon environment. Personalised Attention: Small class sizes foster close mentorship relationships and a collaborative, family-like culture. Community Focus: Regular outreach initiatives build social awareness and professional confidence. How to Get Involved Whether you’re a budding stylist, a seasoned barber, or a local salon owner looking to upskill, THASA’s June activities demonstrated their commitment to excellence, innovation, and community engagement. With its blend of accredited programmes, short-course dynamism, and community outreach, THASA remains the go-to destination for anyone serious about a career in hairdressing. - Creative Fix Hosts Holiday Workshops for Kids and Tweens in Potch
School’s out, and the glue guns are in. This July, the team at My Creative Fix is running a series of hands-on art and craft workshops that’ll keep kids and tweens away from screens, and wrist-deep in glitter, yarn, and glue. Held at 9 Reitz Street in Potch, the Creative Holiday Workshops are running from 11 to 18 July 2025, specifically designed for children aged 8 to 12. Workshop Line-Up This isn’t your average “colour-in-and-go-home” gig. Over the course of a week, participants will get stuck into six different activities, each introducing a new skill or creative technique: 11 July – Paper Art Think quilling, folding, rolling, and making flowers that won’t die two days later. 14 July – Crochet (Part 1) Needles out, granny squares in. Beginners welcome. 15 July – Decoupage Glue + paper + random objects = the art of upcycling. 16 July – Crochet (Part 2) For those who survived Part 1, the sequel awaits. 17 July – Embroidery Kids learn simple stitches and the satisfaction of turning a needle and thread into a small masterpiece. 18 July – Glow Paint Party Neon lights, music, glowing paint, and no need to be good at anything. A messy and exciting finale. All About the Details Each session runs from 14:00 to 16:30, giving parents just enough time to sneak in a coffee or do the weekly shop in peace. All materials are included, so there’s no need to dig through your craft drawer for leftover felt and googly eyes. Prices are pretty straightforward too: R600 for all six sessions R130 if you’re just testing the waters with a single workshop Booking can be done via the website ( mycreativefix.co.za ) or through WhatsApp at 064-681-3914. Spaces are limited, and judging by the neon paint party, this isn’t one to leave to the last minute. Why Bother? Apart from keeping the house glitter-free for a few hours, these workshops aim to build confidence, focus, and fine motor skills, all under the radar while the kids think they’re just having a jol with some paint. There’s no pressure to be a prodigy. It’s a relaxed, social space where kids can create, connect and maybe even come home with something fridge-worthy. Contact Info Website: www.mycreativefix.co.za Facebook: facebook.com/mycre8tivefix WhatsApp / Phone: 064-681-3914 It’s not school. It’s not babysitting. It’s just a bunch of kids having a good time with crafts – and a bit of accidental learning along the way.

- The Go-To Guy Value Proposition to Business
In this Blog we delve deeper into the value proposition created by The Go-To Guy, to both end users of the platform, as well as business and professionals, engaging with The Go-To Guy as one of the listings on our platform. Our focus area currently is on Potchefstroom and surrounding areas, aiming to list businesses from Potchefstroom that engages with customers in Potchefstroom, we do list secondary to first focus businesses that may add value to Potchefstroom customers, a great example of this would be Wedding Venues where we have venues in Potchefstroom as well as surrounding areas such as Parys. We also have a community outlook, which means that our aim is to add value to our community overall, it is for this reason that you will find our different Job Boards on the site, which is visited by thousands of viewers each month. The Different Value Offerings Now lets look at the business value proposition and our operating model to create value for businesses listed on The Go-To Guy, a value proposition that continues to be developed on a continued basis, currently we have made more than 1,100 adjustments on our version 1 of the platform, continuing to explore how greater value could be added, and the results are showing, we grew from 20,000 page views to more than 70,000 in January 2024 The Basic Option - Free Option On this option we list your details on The Go-To Guy site absolutely free. Below is an example of such a listing and showing each of the elements. Each listing is under a category listing on The Go-To Guy website, the graphical example below would be under Business Services - Marketing Agencies. On The Basic Option, only a single category is normally allocated, hence if we take an example, and you do Garden Services as well as Artificial Lawn, you may wish to list in two different categories, then you should take the "Standard" option and request to list in multiple categories. Tip: We have seen here at The Go-To Guy that if a single listing claims to have multiple areas of focus and list these such as being a handyman a plumber, electrician and doing pest control then the click through rate (people clicking on that supplier) is significantly less, customers perception is that "Jack of All Trades" means "Master of None", multiple categories is thus strongly suggested for service providers that caters across different categories. (We explain categories a bit later in this document) Screenshot of Listing Add with Notes You can Register your business at this link here: Register Your Business The Standard Option - Monthly Fee of R129 The Standard Option is very similar at first look to the above, as you get the sae listing structure, however there are a few immediate differences, the most basic ones are as follows: In the example above in Graphic 1 there is a section named "The Go-To Guy Verified", a basic listing cannot have a verified status, which is a status reserved for Standard and executive options that we were able to verify through either physical or social media verification process, this is to ensure that the verified businesses indeed do exist and are operating in Potchefstroom. The customisable links section as well on a Basic option cannot be defined and on a Standard option we link these links to either your links provided and if not available then we use these links to link to relevant to your industry or relevant to Potchefstroom information, obviously we prefer that we have additional links here from your business. All profiles receive a Business Card section, allowing for all businesses listed to have a shareable business card that can be shared across Facebook channels, yet on the Standard Option this business card can also be shared across WhatsApp, and more links are planned to be added in the future, such as to text messages, LinkedIn Profiles and others, the Business Card section is seen below and is accessible by clicking on the "Share this Profile" button on the main listing. Screenshot of Business Card Online with Notes In the example above all "customisable" options are available to Standard Listings, free listings are populated with general information, thus allowing The Go-To Guy Clients on Standard Option to customise and link this Business card to a variety of information sources in the background, such as your corporate web sections and other digital online information that may be of value to you. You can Register your business at this link here: Register Your Business The Advertisement and Business Development Supporting the Service and Value Proposition The Go-To Guy service is not based on only listing different businesses in Potchefstroom, it is based on a well structured and continued marketing cycle using a variety of tools, this includes the following: Direct to Customer Contextual References - Facebook: This refers to The Go-To Guy team answering and referring directly on Facebook requests for services, and which you may have seen where based on a customers request for a specific service, our team would respond with the appropriate link and message, as an example if someone requests for a plumber in Potchefstroom you may see our team respond with a link to the Plumbing section on the Website. We target only "conversation" groups and pages as many pages are purely only "ad dumping and spam" pages, we also do not Spam pages at all with ads, our brand credibility is incredibly important. Direct to Customers Contextual References - WhatsApp: Similar to the above the Direct to Customer WhatsApp messages are responses directing a customer to the appropriate section on the website and this refers to direct queries received via our advertised WhatsApp line. Broad Posts on Facebook: The Go-To Guy at any given time has about 50 pre-planned posts on the Meta/Facebook calendar, these are ads we create directly and share with our Facebook followers, Instagram, Tik Tok and local Facebook Groups on daily basis, and is aimed at creating Awareness of the service offered in Potchefstroom, as well as the ability to find service providers in Potchefstroom. Content creation is incredibly important, therefore the minimum aim is two posts a day going to these groups in the area. Targeted and Boosted Posts on Facebook: The above posts are not paid for and is a free channel, yet for effective advertising and awareness creation its important that targeted ads are pushed out to the community in Potchefstroom. Targeted here refers to targeting specific segments in the community through the Facebook Professional Meta platform with paid for advertisements, allowing ads to be targeted at specific groups, an example of this would be targeting house-owners within a specific age group, or that recently moved into a new house, an ad on Garden Services may be appropriate for this target segment. The Go-To Guy runs regular campaigns aimed at different segments and is aimed at the segments that would have an interest in a specific category on The Go-To Guy website, as per above example. Instagram and TikTok: Linked to our Facebook is our Instagram account where all posts on Facebook is replicated on The Instagram platform, all video ads are also posted to our TikTok account , including the hashtags associated with Potchefstroom, which we also link to our website. Google my Business: The Go-To Guy continuously updates its Google Profiles , this through posts showing customers the website as well as the services offered, including visual and video ads made using the media tools of The Go-To Guy, this adds value to the credibility score of The Go-To Guy and ultimately to businesses using The Go-To Guy Platform. Google Ads: The Go-To Guy on a continued basis runs paid for advertisement on Google Ads platforms, and have a campaign active for each category on the website, this is targeting customers with intent and at the point they are looking for a specific service and uses the Google platform to look for service providers, we then direct these to the appropriate section on The Go-To Guy website, currently we have more than 20 campaigns running across 1,600+ keywords. Sponsorships and Community Programs: In the "Offline" world The Go-To Guy sponsors events and initiatives in our community, such as Local Golf Tournaments and Society Impacting Initiatives, this is aimed at Brand Awareness and giving back to our communities. You can Register your business at this link here: Register Your Business Here are some of the online Indicators of Advertising Campaigns In the above example it can be seen that The Go-to Guy is reaching significant Awareness as well as converting this awareness into "Click Throughs" to our Website and specifically to the different categories, the result being that businesses placing their listings on The Go-To Guy receives the collective benefit, as The Go-To Guy becomes the reference site for services in Potchefstroom, and indeed currently (February 2023) we have more than 30,000 page views per month on our Website and continued month-on-month growth. You can Register your business at this link here: Register Your Business Using the Business Card by Professional Services Segment Use the Business card as a tool for business exposure and sharing across different platforms, its a powerful tool for Professional Services, such as Financial Advisors, Brokers, Accountants and Sales Professionals. This Business Card in a mobile friendly format that allows you and your customers to instantly share your profile information, including links to rich text information, web information, portfolios, without having to even touch a legacy pen, a overloaded email system and the added benefit of being right in the palm of you and your customers hand, on their mobile phone. Below we look at an Estate Agent example. Note the Following: The Agent here linked the additional links directly to pages that showcases the properties for sale and to rent, and indeed if you go and look at this profile the landing page is already filtered with properties for rent or for sale in Potchefstroom. The agent also linked one of the Buttons to his lead generation tool on the "Register for Alerts" Button, so any person clicking on that link would be directed directly to a form to be completed. For social proof and credibility the Agent linked one of the buttons to a mentions section on his Facebook page, allowing visitors to get a sense of comfort that they are dealing with a professional business that has a high credibility factor. Now once the agent engages with a customer he can easily share this profile with his prospective leads by simply clicking on "Share on WhatsApp" which will share the agents profile in a "Friendly URL" manner, see image further below, again creating a sense of credibility and trust with prospective clients, and being professional as well. Screenshot of Property Agent Business Card with Notes The Friendly URL Structure Here is the structure of the URL as used by the system, showing that it is a business Card, The Company name and in this case also the Agents name. You can Register your business at this link here: Register Your Business Forum Spaces If you are a business, or a professional that does not have a fresh and up to date Facebook page or website, and you find that you do not have the ability to create and manage these, then we can add a space for you on our Forum pages where you could add a profile that can be controlled by you and where only invited members can join, whilst the general public could still see the posts. This space allows you to add text, video, photos, links, rich text and a variety of other formatting options, thus you could create a simple yet effective space where you could add valuable information for potential and current customers. Lead Generation Tools Should you not have your own space where customers could complete forms or contact details that you require, then we can create a specific form and space for your business, where customers can complete and send form information to you, we can link this directly to your Business Card. Also look out for The Go-To Guy One Call service expected to launch in June of 2023 :) Our Business Club To further assist our Standard Customers we also created a Business Club, the aim being to provide you with tools and insights that you can use to further promote your business, and where we place articles, references and real life tools and tips you can use to assist you marketing and general business development efforts, this is a free service to our Standard customers, if you want to join then please click here and complete the quick "I am Interested" section and we will be in touch. You can Register your business at this link here: Register Your Business The Categories The structure of the website is a mix of functional (I need a Plumber) and lifestyle (I want to have a birthday party), aimed at finding a balance between providing a visiting customer with an easy to navigate and find information structure, whilst also allowing for different services to be grouped together for a logical flow.
