- Winter Warmth, One Jar at a Time – Bafenyi Trust’s Heartwarming Project Near PotchIn StroomCares Projects·April 15, 2025While most of us in Potch are already planning soup evenings and stocking up on fluffy blankets for winter, just 10 minutes down the road, the team at Bafenyi Trust is planning something far more meaningful – and they need your help. Image : The Go-To Guy Creations Bafenyi Trust, a local organisation based in the Ikageng and Promosa areas, is known for putting their hands and hearts where it matters most. This winter, they’ve kicked off a new project to help vulnerable families stay warm, fed, and cared for. And honestly – it’s the kind of project that makes you pause, dig through your sock drawer, and ask: “How many beanies does one really need?” The Wishlist: Warm Heads, Feet, and Bellies This year, Bafenyi’s Winter Project is aiming high – and rightfully so. They need: • 950 kid’s beanies and socks, in school colours nogal – black, grey, blue, maroon, or green. • 350 adult socks and blankets to make sure no one is left out. • 1,300 jars of soup – yep, you read right. Soup in a jar, and no, not the kind from the fancy aisle at Woolies. Image : Facebook Bafenyi Trust So, What’s the Deal with the Soup Jars? These aren’t your average glass jars collecting dust in the cupboard. Each one is packed with: • ½ cup rice • ½ cup lentils • ½ cup soup mix • 1 stock cube (wrapped, please!) • A packet of soup Basically, one humble jar can feed a family of four. And let’s be honest, if there’s one thing that brings people together during winter, it’s warm food and a full belly. Image : Facebook Bafenyi Trust The Deadline? It’s Closer Than You Think! All donations – whether it’s socks, beanies, or soup jars – need to be in by 2 May 2025. That gives us just enough time to rally together and make it happen. And if you're wondering where to drop off or who to call, speak to Nala at 082 611 5361. She’s your go-to person for all things warm and fuzzy this winter. Why Bafenyi? Because they’re not just handing out items – they’re building community. Their focus goes deeper than just charity. Bafenyi Trust works to uplift people spiritually and practically, believing that the love and message of Jesus Christ brings lasting change, no matter someone’s circumstances. So ja, whether you’re a school teacher with spare classroom socks, a foodie with extra lentils, or just someone with a heart to help – this project is for you. And if you’re not sure where to start? Maybe begin with your own cupboard. Chances are, there’s a beanie in there that hasn’t seen the light of day since the 2021 cold front. Contact Details If you’d like to be part of this heartwarming initiative, whether through donations or volunteering, please get in touch with Nala on 082 611 5361. She’ll gladly guide you through how and where to donate. Every item, every jar, and every bit of kindness counts!20436
- The Financial Foundations – Why Every Business Needs an AccountantIn Wave Breaking Accountants·April 16, 2025Whether you're a solo entrepreneur in Ikageng, a retailer in the CBD, or a small manufacturer in Baillie Park, the success of your business hinges on financial clarity. Yet, many local businesses face mounting questions about compliance, tax, and cash flow, often without the guidance to answer them. In an increasingly regulated and competitive environment, professional accountants, like those at Wave Breaking Accountants, play a vital role in helping businesses not only stay afloat, but thrive. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations This article explores the essential foundations that every business needs: from record-keeping and cash flow, to taxes and VAT registration. These aren’t just administrative checkboxes, they are building blocks of financial stability. Financial Records: The Cornerstone of Compliance and Clarity In South Africa, businesses are legally required to maintain financial records for a minimum of five years. These records include invoices, receipts, cash books, payroll files, tax returns, and bank statements. The aim is not only to comply with SARS regulations, but to ensure that business owners have a clear understanding of their financial position at all times. Many Potchefstroom businesses still operate with a mix of manual and informal systems. This results in inconsistent records, missed expenses, and exposure during tax audits. Accountants step in by: • Setting up reliable record-keeping systems, • Digitising and archiving historical documents, • Reconciling monthly income and expenses, • Ensuring all transactions have supporting documentation. Cash Flow Management: Understanding Money In vs. Money Out Cash flow is the number one reason small businesses in South Africa fail. A 2023 Business Partners SME Confidence Index reported that 60% of local businesses face ongoing cash flow challenges, even when profitable on paper. Accountants help businesses develop real-time visibility into their cash flow through: • Monthly cash flow forecasting, • Scenario planning (e.g., impact of late payments or price increases), • Advising on reserve building, • Identifying spending leaks and inefficiencies. For example, a retail store in Potchefstroom might look profitable, but delayed supplier payments or slow-moving inventory could choke cash availability. An accountant can help model different solutions: faster invoicing cycles, price adjustments, or supplier renegotiations. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Tax Obligations: Avoiding Penalties and Gaining Peace of Mind Taxation for South African SMEs includes income tax, provisional tax, PAYE, UIF, and potentially SARS eFiling admin, all of which come with strict deadlines and regulations. Many small businesses under-report or file late, leading to penalties of up to 200% or frozen bank accounts. An accountant mitigates this risk by: • Registering and updating all relevant tax profiles, • Ensuring timely submissions of provisional and annual tax returns, • Calculating deductions like home office, fuel, and depreciation, • Claiming SBC (Small Business Corporation) tax relief when eligible. Wave Breaking Accountants also assist in reconciling PAYE and UIF, submitting EMP201 and EMP501 reports, and preparing IRP5 certificates for employees. Their tax services ensure business owners can focus on operations, not paperwork. VAT Registration: Knowing When It’s Time to Register Businesses in South Africa must register for VAT once their annual turnover exceeds R1 million in any 12-month period. However, many entrepreneurs are unaware that SARS can backdate registration and apply penalties. Beyond compliance, VAT registration also brings potential financial benefits, including: • Claiming back input VAT on expenses, • Improving supplier credibility, • Meeting procurement requirements with large buyers. Accountants assess whether voluntary VAT registration is beneficial for businesses under the threshold (minimum R50,000 turnover to apply). For instance, a Potchefstroom-based service provider buying equipment and paying rent may benefit from early registration. An accountant will handle: • Registration with SARS, • Structuring pricing models for VAT, • Filing bi-monthly VAT201 returns, • Reconciling VAT on purchases and sales. Without expert help, VAT mismanagement is common. Incorrect claims, missed deadlines, or duplicate submissions can trigger SARS audits. Wave Breaking Accountants ensures all filings are clean and audit-proof. In Summary: Why Every Local Business Needs Financial Guidance Business owners in Potchefstroom wear many hats. But financial management is too important to approach casually. With expert support from firms like Wave Breaking Accountants, businesses gain: • Better decision-making through accurate records, • Reliable cash flow forecasts, • Penalty-free tax compliance, • Strategic VAT planning. More than just number-crunchers, accountants are partners in sustainable growth. They translate financial complexity into clear, actionable advice tailored to your business size, sector, and goals. - Crystal Clear: The Science and Simplicity Behind Better Ice with Filtered WaterIn Body Fuel Express·April 16, 2025On a hot summer day, there’s nothing quite as refreshing as a cold drink served with perfectly clear ice cubes. Yet, many of us have settled for cloudy, misshapen ice, never questioning why it looks that way or if it could be better. The answer lies not just in the freezer, but in the quality of the water we use. With filtered and purified water, you can unlock a whole new level of ice, clearer, cleaner, tastier. And thanks to businesses like Body Fuel Express, achieving that at home or in your business is easier than ever. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Why Clear Ice Matters Clear ice isn’t just about appearances. While it does elevate the presentation of your beverage, it also speaks volumes about purity and taste. Here's why it’s worth paying attention to: Aesthetic Appeal Cloudy ice is often filled with air bubbles and impurities. Clear ice, on the other hand, adds a sleek, professional touch, perfect for cocktails, iced coffees, or simply impressing guests at home. Better Taste Impurities such as chlorine, heavy metals, and minerals in tap water don’t just look bad, they affect taste. Clear ice made with purified water ensures that your drink’s flavor remains untouched and refreshing. Healthier Hydration Using purified water for ice means fewer bacteria, fewer contaminants, and better overall hygiene. This is especially crucial in businesses like cafés and restaurants, where customer trust is everything. How to Make Crystal Clear Ice at Home If you're ready to step up your ice game, here are the essential steps to making restaurant-quality ice at home: Step 1: Use Filtered or Purified Water Tap water contains minerals and chemicals that contribute to cloudiness. Filtered or RO (reverse osmosis) water removes these impurities, giving you a clean base for ice-making. Step 2: Boil and Cool the Water Boiling the water helps eliminate dissolved air, which is one of the main causes of cloudy ice. Let the water cool completely before freezing. Step 3: Try Directional Freezing To mimic professional ice-making techniques, use a cooler or an insulated container with the top open. This method freezes water from the top down, pushing impurities to the bottom. Once frozen, you can cut off the cloudy portion at the base and keep only the crystal-clear top layer. Step 4: Freeze Slowly Fast freezing traps air and particles. A slow, controlled freeze allows them to escape, resulting in clearer ice. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Ice Machine Care: The Hidden Benefit of Filtered Water Using unfiltered water in your ice machine or freezer can lead to mineral buildup, reducing efficiency and longevity. Many manufacturers recommend filtered water not only for better ice but also for maintaining the machine itself. Regularly using purified water means less cleaning, fewer breakdowns, and more consistent ice quality. Business Use: Why Clear Ice is a Must in Hospitality For restaurants, cocktail bars, coffee shops, and guesthouses, presentation is key. Clear ice is part of the experience—it reflects the care put into every aspect of the service. And customers notice. Using clear, filtered ice also shows a commitment to quality and hygiene, both of which are non-negotiable in food and beverage service today. Source for purified water in Potch: Body Fuel Express Whether you’re an at-home mixologist or running a bustling café, you need access to high-quality, purified water to elevate your ice—and your experience. That’s where Body Fuel Express comes in. Established in November 2013, Body Fuel Express has become Potchefstroom’s trusted name for safe, healthy, and affordable drinking water. - Potch Art Day - A Bit of Paint a Bit of Boil and a Whole Lot of Vibes - 21 AprilIn Social Talk·April 16, 2025Art, Seafood and Chill – What’s Not to Like? Potchefstroom is gearing up for a creative Monday on 21 April as Pothole on the Bult hosts Potch Art Day – a unique event that blends paint, good food, and easy-going music. Doors open from 9:30 to 15:00, and entry will set you back R150 per person. Not bad for a day of artistic expression, live tunes, and something lekker to chow. A Bloom & Boil Bash This isn’t your average paint and sip. Potch Art Day is part of the Bloom & Boil series, a vibe curated by Seafood Boil Klerksdorp, founded in 2022 by none other than Chef Ginger. What started as a delivery kitchen serving up seafood boil magic has now evolved into a full-blown sit-down restaurant – and now, a contributor to Potchefstroom’s cultural calendar. Chef Ginger’s mission? Bring folks together over bold spices, buttery crab legs, and the kind of mussels you don’t find at the gym. With Seafood Boil opening its brick-and-mortar spot in Potch in 2024, it’s only fitting they’re behind this mashup of creativity and cuisine. What’s on the Canvas (and the Menu) Guests can expect rhinestone painting (a little extra sparkle never hurt anyone), while others might be more into the chill vibes, enjoying art and conversation over a glass of wine or two. If painting’s not your thing, just hang back and socialise – nobody’s forcing you to draw a flower. There’s also a Seafood Boil meal discount for ticket holders, because what’s the point of staring at art if you’re doing it hungry? Think fresh seafood, zingy sauces, and a strong possibility of needing extra serviettes. Live Background Music – Yes, Please Adding to the day’s groove, there’ll be live music and performances to soundtrack your painting, eating, and general lounging. It’s a well-rounded affair – art in your hand, beats in your ears, and maybe a prawn or two on your plate. Details That Matter • Date: Monday, 21 April 2025 • Venue: Pothole on the Bult, Shop 7, Uitsig Arcade, 98 Steve Biko St, Potchefstroom • Tickets: R150 Contact Info: • Phone/WhatsApp: 068 404 8351 • Facebook: Seafood Boil • Website: seafoodboilklerksdorp This isn’t your typical festival with muddy fields and long queues for boerie rolls. So bring your mates, bring your painty clothes, and maybe don’t bring your white sneakers.1017
- Die Wilge High School Swings Into Action With 2025 Golf Day - 9 MayIn Social Talk·April 16, 2025If you’re a fan of fairways, or just looking for a decent excuse to knock off early on a Friday, Die Wilge High School’s upcoming Golf Day might be just what the doctor (or principal) ordered. Mark your calendar: Friday, 9 May 2025. It’s all happening at the Potchefstroom Country Club, with a shotgun start at 10:30am, so there’s plenty of time to stretch, swing and sneak in a breakfast roll before tee-off. This year’s format? Better Ball, which means you can carry your partner (or get carried) without too much judgement. Whether you're a scratch golfer or a serial sand-trapper, all are welcome – the more balls lost in the water, the better the stories at the 19th hole. Why the Big Day? Die Wilge isn’t just about books and blackboards – they’re on a mission to provide quality education to learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN), with a strong focus on vocational skills and personal development. And like most good things in life, it takes a bit of cash to keep it all going. So the school’s hoping for a bit of generosity – in the form of players, sponsors, prizes, or just some solid participation. If you can hit a ball or sponsor a hole, you’re already halfway to making a difference. How Much Is It Gonna Cost Me? Pretty straightforward: • R400 per player • R1600 for a 4 ball • R1500 to sponsor a hole • R3000 for both a 4 ball and hole sponsorship combo If you’re feeling generous (or the boss is paying), go big with the combo. Bookings can be done via WhatsApp or phone on 082 872 6272 or 084 701 0271. And yes, if you’re planning on cruising around in a cart – you’ll need to book that through Potch Country Club directly. Don’t arrive with expectations and leave on foot. Who’s Behind It? Mr AB Rudd, principal of Die Wilge, is the driving force behind the event – along with the dedicated staff and sponsors who keep the wheels turning. Or in this case, the golf carts rolling. They’re asking for companies and individuals to get involved – whether it’s by donating prizes, sponsoring holes, or just coming along to play a round. It’s not only a chance to support a good cause but a sneaky networking opportunity disguised as a social round of golf. Recently selected to participate in the Elite Invitational Hockey Tour in the Netherlands, Yolindi’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and purpose. From Netball Dropout to Hockey Devotee Yolindi first picked up a hockey stick in Grade 4 after realizing that netball wasn’t her game. What began as a fallback sport quickly turned into a passion. Though hockey wasn’t a big deal at her primary school, by high school, Yolindi had made the decision to pursue the sport seriously. Over the years, the sport has become more competitive and intense. She laughs about the irony that while hockey isn’t technically a contact sport, injuries and bruises are inevitable. From ankle knocks to a ball ricocheting off her shoulder during a 16-yard play, she has taken it all in stride. Tour Experience and National Selection A recent highlight in Yolindi’s journey was her participation in a school tour to Menlopark, Pretoria, where she played several games against strong city schools. Though her team didn’t win all their matches, they gained valuable experience and improved teamwork. It was during this tour that Yolindi received news that would change her life—she was selected, along with four other teammates, to join the South African team for the Elite Invitational Tour to the Netherlands. An International Dream with a Price Tag The Netherlands tour is not just a game-changer—it’s a dream come true. But for dreams to take flight, they need support. The total cost of the tour is R55,500, and Yolindi and her family are currently fundraising to make this trip possible. She has set up a BackaBuddy campaign and is exploring GoFundMe to allow international donations. During the tour, she will not only play matches but also attend a World Cup game and receive coaching from international players—a golden opportunity to grow her skill set. Hockey, Teamwork, and Grit As a midfielder, Yolindi plays a pivotal role on the field—both defending and supporting attacks. She explains the structure of hockey positions and the technicalities of playing on different surfaces, from the smooth synthetic "Astro" turf to the less predictable grass fields. Despite tough competition, Yolindi believes her team, the under-16A squad from Hoër Volkskool, has the discipline and potential to make a name for themselves. Her reflections on adapting to surfaces, match preparation, and the mental toll of the sport reveal a maturity beyond her years. Beyond the Game Yolindi is not just focused on her performance but also on team morale and self-improvement. She openly discusses how she has worked on her attitude, shifting from frustration to leadership—motivating teammates, managing emotions, and building trust. Her role model is Shona, a university-level player representing South Africa, who has inspired Yolindi to keep reaching higher. A Call for Support With her sights set on October’s Netherlands tour, Yolindi needs community backing to get there. Every contribution counts. Whether it’s R10 or R1000, your donation can help a passionate young athlete represent South Africa on an international stage. - Stroom Stories: Flying High with Midwest Model ClubIn News Talk·April 16, 2025A sky filled with precision, passion, and polystyrene – welcome to the world of remote-controlled aviation in Potchefstroom. In this episode of Stroom Stories, host Pieter, takes viewers into the thrilling world of RC (remote control) aviation with Ayrton Siena, a passionate member of the Midwest Model Club. What begins as a curious introduction soon reveals a deeply technical and rewarding hobby, where both youth and adults take to the skies in miniature aircraft built for both beauty and performance. From Curiosity to Control Ayrton's journey with model aircraft began in his early childhood, growing up in Potchefstroom. Inspired by his father's interest in the hobby, Ayrton was introduced to the concept of remote-controlled flight at a young age. Yet, for years, he hesitated to try it himself, unsure if he had the skill or confidence. That changed four years ago, when he finally gave it a go—and to his surprise, everything seemed to click. Since then, he’s immersed himself in the world of RC flying, spending the last year specializing in aerobatics, a demanding form of flight that tests a pilot’s reflexes, control, and focus. The Art of Aerobatics Aerobatic flying, Ayrton explains, is a step above casual flight. It involves high-precision movements, like turning a plane 180 degrees in mid-air or holding it in a stall position—where the wings no longer provide lift and the plane stays airborne purely through engine thrust. These movements require careful, fine-tuned control and lightning-fast decisions. A single mistake could cost a pilot their aircraft. Compared to standard flying patterns like loops and rolls, aerobatics challenges every part of the pilot’s brain, as well as the limits of the aircraft itself. Exploring the RC Aircraft Universe There’s a wide range of styles and classes in RC aviation. Ayrton breaks them down: • Light Sport Aircraft (LSA): Petrol-powered planes suited for high G-force aerobatics. • Warbirds: Historical scale models of World War aircraft, often built with heavier materials like fiberglass and designed for display rather than extreme manoeuvres. • Helicopters: Available in electric (preferred for their instant power) and nitro variations. Nitro engines reach higher revs but respond slower compared to electric motors. • Jets: Either EDF (Electric Ducted Fan) or turbine-based. These are more commonly flown in larger cities due to space requirements and complexity. • Gliders: Silent, engine-free flyers that focus on aerodynamic precision. • FPV Drones: Highly customizable flying machines built from chosen parts, controlled via goggles, and raced in obstacle courses for speed and agility. Building drones, Ayrton says, is much like assembling a gaming computer—you select each part to suit your needs and preferences. Getting Started Without Breaking the Bank For many newcomers, the cost of RC flying seems daunting. Ayrton addresses this misconception. While advanced setups can run into tens of thousands of rands, beginners can enter the hobby for around R5,000, using second-hand equipment and polystyrene planes that come ready to fly. These starter kits are easy to repair—typically using common wood glue and spare foam parts—and ideal for learning. New flyers at the Midwest Model Club are encouraged to test their skills on club-owned training aircraft before making any purchases. The learning curve includes everything from basic takeoff to safe landings, with support for both airplane and helicopter training. Dreaming Bigger and Flying Higher Ayrton is not just a weekend flyer—he’s also got long-term aspirations. He hopes to continue competing in aerobatic competitions and eventually be invited to perform at major airshows using large-scale RC planes. These aircraft mimic full-size planes in movement, but without the physical limitations of carrying a human pilot, allowing for snappier and more extreme manoeuvres. One of his favorite tricks is “hovering,” where the plane balances vertically in front of the pilot. Some even manage to tap the tail or spin the plane on its wheels mid-air, creating a stunning visual for spectators. Events That Bring the Community Together The Midwest Model Club doesn’t only cater to solo flyers. They regularly organize events to grow the hobby and involve the wider community. Their Fun Fly Day on 24 May is a highlight—an all-day friendly event with no prizes, just enjoyment and shared passion. Later in June, the club will host an IMAC (International Miniature Aerobatic Club) competition, focusing on flying exact patterns with precision. More events are in the works, including school exhibitions, potential appearances at festivals like Ligjefeest, and collaborations with local institutions. Rules, Remotes and Realism While RC flying may look playful from the outside, there are clear regulations in place, especially for competitions. Aircraft are divided into weight classes, ranging from smaller 20cc planes to massive 120cc models. These weight classes help level the playing field, especially in competitive settings. RC controllers are also more complex than casual observers might expect. Many come with multiple switches, knobs, and buttons, all programmable to suit the pilot’s specific aircraft and flying style. Some setups include telemetry for engine revs, battery levels, and GPS tracking—especially useful for large-scale or Warbird models. With clubs like Midwest Model Club making it accessible and affordable, anyone with a dream of flying—whether a child or adult—can find their place in the sky. From polystyrene trainers to turbine-powered jets, the only limit is your imagination… and maybe the wind speed. #TheGoToGuy #StroomStories #PotchGazette #Potchefstroom #MidwestModelClub #RCVlieg #LeerOmTeVlieg #ModelVliegtuie #DroneVibes1020
- The Big Value of a Small Trailer: Why Every South African Family Should Own OneIn Buco Potchefstroom·April 15, 2025If you’re a South African family that loves to hit the road for weekend getaways, school holidays, or festive season road trips, then you’ve probably faced this all-too-familiar scenario: your car is packed to the brim, the kids are squashed between bags, and someone’s threatening to leave the cooler box behind (again). That’s where the unsung hero of travel convenience comes in the humble small trailer. 🚗 No Special Licence Required – Just Hook and Go One of the best-kept secrets of small trailer ownership in South Africa is that you don’t need a special driving licence to tow one — as long as it meets a few basic requirements. Under current South African legislation, if you hold a standard Code B (EB) licence — which most regular drivers have, you can legally tow a trailer with a GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) of up to 750kg. That covers most small luggage trailers used by families for everyday travel. This makes it one of the most accessible and affordable travel upgrades you can make. 💼 More Space, Less Stress Small trailers are absolute space savers. Instead of playing Tetris with your family’s bags, beach umbrellas, sports gear, and braai essentials, a trailer gives you breathing room, literally. • More comfort for passengers – no bags on laps! • Easy access to snacks and entertainment while driving. • Better weight distribution= safer driving and improved fuel efficiency. 🌄 Built for Adventure South Africa is made for road trips. From the wild coastlines of the Western Cape to the tranquil bushveld of Limpopo, there’s no shortage of places to explore. But with a trailer, your options grow: • Camp with ease • Beach holidays with gear galore • Bush breaks with all the supplies With or without 4x4, a small trailer allows your family to take more — and do more — without sacrificing comfort or safety. 🔧 Low Maintenance, High Value • Affordable to buy • Simple to maintain • Durable and customisable You’ll find trailers for sale almost everywhere, from outdoor shops and Facebook Marketplace to major hardware stores (hint: like BUCO 😉). ✅ Before You Tow: A Quick Checklist 1. Trailer must be under 750kg GVM (for licence compliance). 2. Check tyres, lights, and plugs before every trip. 3. Ensure your number plate and indicators are visible and working. 4. Always carry a spare wheel. 🌟 Final Thoughts Whether you're heading for the Kruger, Cape Town, or the Kalahari, a small trailer is one of the smartest travel companions you can invest in. It brings space, freedom, and convenience, and now, thanks to BUCO, it might even come free. 🎉 BUCO’s Big Trailer Giveaway is Here! - Bingo Bites and Big Bucks at Parys Golf & Country Estate - 25 AprilIn Social Talk·April 15, 2025If you hear someone shouting "BINGO!" a bit too enthusiastically on the 25th of April, don't worry — it’s not your neighbour losing the plot, it's probably someone at 1919 on Vaal winning part of the R10,000 prize pool. That’s right, Parys Golf & Country Estate is hosting what might be the most lucrative night of calling out random letters and numbers this town’s seen in a while. Thanks to a bit of help from World Sports Betting (yes, they’re sponsoring the fun), Bingo Night is not only happening — it’s happening in style. R210 for Dinner and Drama For just R210, guests get a shot at bingo glory and a two-course meal, which frankly already makes it a decent night out before you even consider the ten grand. Dinner’s not playing games either. Starters include crumbled mushrooms or squid heads (a surprisingly divisive option, but we’ll let you fight that battle with your table). Mains are proper South African comfort food: fish and chips, sirloin steak with egg and chips, or chicken schnitzel with veggies. Nothing you’ll need a dictionary to pronounce, and all of it pretty lekker. Not Just for the Aunties While bingo might have a rep as the go-to game for tannies with cats named Mavis, this event promises a bit more edge. The grand prize is enough to get people of all ages sharpening their listening skills and rubbing their lucky charms. And no, that’s not a metaphor. Just don’t rock up expecting to wing it — bookings are essential. Call 056 818 1567 unless you like living dangerously. The Fine Print (Without the Fine Print Vibe) • Venue: 1919 on Vaal Restaurant, Parys Golf & Country Estate • Address: c/o Briel St & Venus St, Parys, 9585 • Date & Time: 25 April 2025 at 19:00 • Price: R210 per person • Bookings: 056-818-1567 • Website: parysgolfandcountryestate.co.za • Facebook: @ParysGolfandCountryEstate So, whether you’re a seasoned dabber or just in it for the food and vibes, this one’s worth marking in your calendar. - Midwest Model Club First Event Of The Year: A Fly-In With a Twist - 24 MayIn Social Talk·April 15, 2025Potchefstroom Gets Airborne The Midwest Model Club is dusting off the runways and lining up the aircraft for their first fly-in of the year, set to take place on 24 May 2025 at their usual airfield just outside Potchefstroom. It kicks off at 8h00 sharp, so best bring your flask and sunscreen. Bring a Plane, Pay a Fee. Watch for Free Whether you’re a seasoned RC pilot or just someone who enjoys watching other people’s toys fly better than your car drives, this event has you covered. Pilots pay R100, but spectators can roll in for free – which is a pretty sweet deal if you’re just there for the vibes, the flight banter, or maybe the food. Fly What You’ve Got The club welcomes all model aircraft – from planes and helicopters to drones. If it flies and doesn’t scare the cows, chances are it’s welcome. This is also a good time to mention they’re rolling out a brand-new flight training programme, perfect for those wanting to stop crashing in style and start landing on purpose. Not Just Hot Air If the whirr of electric motors and scent of burnt nitro fuel isn’t quite enough to keep you going, a food cart will be available on site – ready to serve up something to keep your hands busy when your plane’s on the ground. Whether it's coffee, wors rolls or something else entirely, your stomach won’t leave disappointed. How to Get in Touch For more info or just to talk planes, you can reach the club organisers in every way short of smoke signals: • Facebook: Midwest Model Club • Phone/WhatsApp: 079-898-1333 Events like this might not make national headlines, but they do something better – they bring the community together, spark new hobbies, and give people a reason to be outside on a Saturday morning. Whether you’re flying, learning, spectating or just there for a boerie and a chat, the Midwest Model Club’s fly-in promises to keep it grounded, but fun.1024
- North West Cricket Celebrates a Season of Champions at 2024/25 Awards GalaIn Sport Talk·April 15, 2025The 2024/25 North West Cricket Awards night was more than just a glittering event—it was a heartfelt celebration of growth, grit, and the spirit of the game. Held this past weekend, the event brought together rising stars, seasoned professionals, and the often-unsung heroes behind the scenes to honour a season rich in milestones. From the raw energy of youth development to the precision of professional play, every level of the province’s cricket ecosystem was recognised. And rightly so—North West cricket continues to prove itself as a fertile ground for both talent and tenacity. Image: North West Dragons Cricket Facebook Nurturing the Future: Youth & Development Awards The evening began with a tribute to the foundation of the game: its youngest participants. Recognition was given to players and coaches involved in the KFC Mini Cricket programme, Hubs, and Provincial Age Group competitions. These platforms are more than just stepping stones—they are launchpads for future Proteas. The Western Legends Cubs and SA U19 representatives were also highlighted for their national-level achievements, with their performances serving as a beacon for the next generation. Crucially, awards were also handed to the people who make these programmes possible—coaches, scorers, and umpires—many of whom work tirelessly with little spotlight. Holding the Fort: Club & Senior Cricket Awards The backbone of the game at community level, Club and Rural Cricket, received well-earned recognition. From Sunday fixtures to regional tournaments, club players and administrators often keep the heartbeat of cricket alive in towns and villages across the province. The NWC Academy Colts—a crucial feeder system for elite cricket—celebrated its top achievers, while Blind Cricket participants were acknowledged for their continued growth and contribution to inclusive sport. Both the Women’s and Men’s Premier Leagues produced standout performances this past season, signalling not just depth, but genuine quality in North West’s domestic cricket structure. Image: North West Dragons Cricket Facebook Dragons Roar: Professional Player Awards 🔸 Glencore Dragons Women’s Awards: • Deidre van Rensburg • T20 Batter of the Year • One-Day Batter of the Year • Player of the Year • Recognised for her consistency and game-changing performances. • Ane Saunderson • T20 Bowler of the Year • Alyssa Erxleben • One-Day Bowler of the Year • Nthabiseng Nini • Player’s Player • Honoured for her influence both on and off the field. 🔸 Glencore Dragons Men’s Awards: • Wihan Lubbe • T20 Player of the Year • Player of the Year • Celebrated for his all-round performance and leadership on the field. • Ruan de Swardt • 4-Day Player of the Year • Player’s Player • Acknowledged for his consistency and team spirit. • Caleb Seleka • One-Day Player of the Year • Recognised for a standout breakthrough season. Beyond the Boundary: Special Mentions The evening wasn’t just about runs and wickets. Lifetime Achievement and Long Service Awards recognised decades of dedication, while Presidential Awards honoured players who represented the province at national level. A Special Achievement Award was also presented for extraordinary contributions to the game—a reminder that cricket's story is as much about people as it is about performance. Image: North West Dragons Cricket Facebook The Team Behind the Team The event, hosted at the stylish Snowflake Venue, wouldn’t have been possible without the support of a broad coalition of sponsors and partners. From OFM to NWU, and from Eastvaal Renault Potch to Sunbake, the commitment of these organisations fuels the game’s development at all levels. Looking Ahead If the 2024/25 season proved anything, it’s that North West cricket is not just surviving—it’s thriving. The combination of grassroots investment, club culture, and professional excellence is creating a strong pipeline of talent and a shared vision for the future. As the lights dimmed and the trophies found their new homes, one thing was clear: in the North West, cricket isn’t just a sport—it’s a community. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #potchgazette #stroomstories #sporttalk #Cricket1019
Kultuur floreer hier in vele vorme. Verskeie gemeenskapsprojekte wys hierdie saamhorigheid in aksie.
