  • NWU FAST Initiative: Empowering Potchefstroom Educators with Life-Saving Skills

An inspiring community engagement project is making waves: the NWU School of Nursing’s First Aid for School Teachers (FAST) initiative. Launched in early 2025, this programme reflects Northwestern University’s commitment to practical community outreach. As an independent blogger observing local developments, it’s heartening to see educators equipped not only with pedagogical knowledge but also with vital life-saving skills. This article delves into the origins, implementation, feedback, and future outlook of FAST, highlighting its significance for schools and the broader community. Background and Alignment with NWU Community Engagement Policy The FAST initiative emerges from the NWU Faculty of Health Sciences’ drive to translate academic expertise into tangible societal benefits. Under the auspices of the University’s Community Engagement Policy, the School of Nursing (SON) team, comprising Dr Khumo Shopo, Ms Jacky Goosen, Ms Johandi Neethling, Ms Stephani Botha, and Ms Johanna Ditefo, identified a critical need: ensuring that primary school teachers possess the confidence and competence to respond to common emergencies in school settings. By registering FAST as an official community engagement project, the team signaled both institutional support and a structured framework for sustained impact. Kickoff Session at Laerskool President Pretorius In February and March 2025, the FAST team conducted its inaugural training session at Laerskool President Pretorius. Coordinated in collaboration with Mr. JJ Viljoen, 22 teachers participated in comprehensive first aid instruction. The curriculum covered assessment and management of minor injuries, such as cuts, sprains, and bruises, as well as hands-on practice in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Independent observers noted the enthusiasm among participants: many teachers shared that the practical demonstrations and scenario-based exercises helped demystify emergency response. Owing to the positive reception, organisers scheduled an additional session later in the year, underscoring the programme’s adaptability and responsiveness to demand. NWU Faculty of Health Sciences Expanding Reach: June 5 Training Session Building on the initial success, a second FAST session was held on 5 June 2025. This time, 16 educators from various Potchefstroom schools came together under the coordination of Ms D. Sengati, SADTU Branch Secretary. Participating institutions spanned a diverse spectrum: Technical High School Potchefstroom, Boitshoko High School, Bright Beginnings Potchefstroom, Promosa Primary, B.M. Choabi Potchefstroom, Mohadin Primary School, Botoka Technical School, Boitirelo Primary School, Nanogang Primary School, Tshepo Primary School, Potchefstroom High School for Boys, Potchefstroom Secondary School, Promosa Secondary School, and Buffelsvlei Intermediate School. This broad representation indicates growing recognition among school networks of the value in teacher-led first aid competence. Teacher Feedback and Perceived Impact Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Many teachers reported that the FAST training significantly boosted their confidence in handling minor emergencies. Several comments highlighted a newfound sense of empowerment: one teacher remarked that understanding the proper steps for CPR and wound management removed previous hesitation about intervening in crisis moments. Another emphasised that simply knowing the correct initial actions, for instance, how to stabilise a sprained ankle or manage a potential choking incident, could make a tangible difference in student safety. As an independent observer, these testimonials underscore how practical skills training fosters a culture of preparedness in schools, where educators feel more assured of their ability to act decisively when seconds matte r. NWU Faculty of Health Sciences Creating a Lasting Community Impact Beyond immediate skill acquisition, FAST is poised to generate longer-term benefits. Trained teachers can cascade knowledge: they may integrate basic first aid awareness into classroom discussions or mentor colleagues who have yet to attend formal sessions. Furthermore, by embedding first aid competence within school culture, institutions signal to parents and the wider community that student safety is a shared priority. Such community-wide adoption can reduce response times in emergencies, potentially preventing complications or serious outcomes Future Directions and Programme Development Looking ahead, the FAST team is eager to broaden and deepen the programme. Potential enhancements include: Refresher Courses:  Scheduling follow-up sessions to reinforce skills and introduce updates aligned with the latest first aid guidelines. Peer-Led Workshops:  Training selected teachers as FAST ambassadors, empowering intra-school mentorship and decentralised training capacities. Resource Materials:  Developing concise, accessible first aid manuals or pocket guides tailored to the school environment. Simulation Drills:  Organising practical drills in collaboration with local health services, e.g., mock emergency scenarios, to test protocols in realistic settings. Extended Outreach:  Partnering with neighbouring communities or other educational districts to scale the initiative beyond Potchefstroom. Such developments would ensure that FAST remains dynamic, responsive to evolving needs, and sustainable over time. Moreover, forging partnerships with local clinics, emergency services, or NGOs could enrich training content and foster networks for follow-up support when serious incidents occur. NWU Faculty of Health Sciences Challenges and Considerations No initiative is without challenges. Scheduling training sessions around teachers’ busy timetables requires careful coordination. Ensuring consistent participation, especially for refresher courses, may demand incentives or official recognition (e.g., certification, CPD credits). Additionally, sourcing adequate materials (mannequins for CPR practice, first aid kits for demonstrations) necessitates funding or sponsorship. From an independent blogger stance, acknowledging these hurdles adds credibility: it highlights that while enthusiasm is high, logistical and resource planning are essential for lasting success. Exit Reflection The NWU FAST initiative exemplifies proactive community engagement, translating academic expertise into life-saving competence in local schools. By empowering teachers with first aid skills, the project not only enhances immediate safety but also fosters a culture of preparedness that reverberates through classrooms and families. As the programme evolves, incorporating refresher trainings, peer-led workshops, and broader outreach, it stands to become a model for similar institutions. For Potchefstroom educators and stakeholders, FAST offers both practical benefits and a testament to collaborative spirit between university and community. From an independent blogger’s viewpoint, initiatives like this remind us that small investments in training can yield significant returns: safer schools, more confident educators, and ultimately, healthier communities. Continuous support, thoughtful planning, and ongoing feedback will be key to maintaining momentum and the FAST story is one worth following in the months and years to come. #TheGoToGuy #stroomstories potchgazette #potchefstroom

The Skybar’s tagline promises a “city vibe” and indeed its balcony and lounge area make it a memorable place to relax or mingle . The Farm Lifestyle Centre Often called “Coco’s Saloon,” the Farm Lifestyle Centre is a family-friendly pub/restaurant and events venue on the outskirts of town. It offers weekly live music and even line dance nights . Large screens show sports matches on weekends, while the pub & grill serves hearty comfort food. Mystic Boer Potchefstroom Mystic Boer is the local branch of a well-known South African pub chain. According to its history, the first Mystic Boer opened in Bloemfontein in 1997, followed by Stellenbosch in 2004, and Potchefstroom in 2011 . True to its brand, Mystic Boer has a relaxed tavern atmosphere serving plated South African fare and ice-cold beers. It’s a place to gather casually, students and locals alike enjoy its pub lunches and classic pub interior. Though it doesn’t have the fancy rooftop of Skybar, Mystic Boer’s longevity and straightforward vibe make it a reliable spot for a familiar, friendly hangout . The Fine Pair The Fine Pair is a charming wine bar and café located next to the Music Café on Chief Albert Luthuli Drive. Don’t be fooled by the coffee-shop ambiance, it’s equally known for its curated wine list. According to a local guide, it’s “more than a coffee shop” and specializes in exquisite wines and savory bagels, and even offers its newly introduced pizzas . The combination of artisanal drinks and light eats (imagine sipping South African Shiraz while nibbling on a fresh bagel) sets The Fine Pair apart. It’s a cozy spot for a midday break or early evening relax, unique among Potch’s scene for blending café and wine-bar culture . Hennie’s Hennie’s is a homegrown chain with a location in Potch that feels like a friendly sports pub . The Go-To Guy’s local gazette notes that Hennie’s “offers more than just the best chops and cold drinks in town”, it’s a spot where old friends and new gather over live sports on TV, hearty meals, and upbeat music . With indoor and outdoor seating (and even a kids’ play area at some branches), Hennie’s caters to families during the day. By night, expect sports fans and students to occupy its tables, cheering on rugby or soccer matches. It’s beloved for its warm atmosphere and consistent pub fare, making it a Potch social staple . LyriMus Sessions LyriMus Sessions isn’t a club or cafe, but rather an intimate live-music event series held at the LyriMus Theater (2 Waterbok Ave). These evenings bring local and guest musicians into a “living room” style setting, where audience and artists really connect . One reviewer called it a platform for artist with a cozy vibe.   In practice, that means you might grab your ticket to a LyriMus Session and find the stage set like a lounge, with finger foods and soft lighting. Themes often range from nostalgic duets to solo performances, and performers frequently encourage sing-alongs. This format is unique in Potchefstroom: it’s low-key enough for a date or group of friends to enjoy live music without the big-club scene, yet offers professionally curated shows. Die Local at Impala For full-on nightlife, head to the Impala Hotel complex in town. Its historic pub (formerly “Potties Bar”) has been rebranded Die Local at Impala, serving cheap pub lunches and cocktails during the day . The real draw is Impala Nightclub  upstairs, a massive multi-level club that’s been a Potch institution since the 1980s . With a claimed capacity of around 2000 people, it features state-of-the-art sound/lighting and even South Africa’s first LED disco-equalizer DJ booth . Students and locals pack the dancefloor to everything from Afrikaans hits to deep house. Longtime residents note that Impala has grown “from strength to strength” with celebrity DJs and live acts over decades . In short, if you want a true party atmosphere, flashing lights, big crowds, and non-stop dancing, Die Local/Impala is the place. (Insider tip: it’s often described as Potchefstroom’s “party capital”, so come ready to dance.) Snowflake Potchefstroom Snowflake is unlike any other venue listed, so it deserves special mention. It’s housed in an old flour mill building (dating back to the 1920s) that’s been repurposed into a multi-dimensional arts and events complex . Over the past 16 years, Snowflake has organically become a hub for the arts: it’s a venue for concerts, art exhibitions, markets, festivals, weddings and even fashion shows . Perhaps its best-known event is the monthly Snowflake Market, where families and youths gather on a Friday evening to enjoy live music, craft beers, food stalls and unique handmade goods in the spacious industrial setting . In other words, Snowflake isn’t a bar or club, but it offers socializing and live music in a creative environment. It’s as much a cultural icon as the pubs are, and a great place to experience Potchefstroom’s artsy side. Each of these venues has its own character, from a sky-high lounge to a rustic arts warehouse, but all promise music, dancing or socializing in some form. They are exactly the kinds of businesses the Go-To Guy lists under “Things to Do – Listen, Dance, Socialise” in Potchefstroom. Together, they paint a picture of a city that knows how to have fun, whether you’re a local unwinding after class, a tourist looking for live music, or anyone in between. Enjoy the vibes (and don’t forget to dance)! #Social #Dance #Listen #Thegotoguy #Potchefstroom

  • Minister Creecy and Deputy Minister Hlengwa Lead Road Safety Awareness Campaign in Potchefstroom Ahead of Youth Day Long Weekend

Potchefstroom, 13 June 2025. In advance of the Youth Day long weekend, the Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, and Deputy Minister of Transport, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, spearheaded a high-profile road safety awareness campaign along the N12 corridor in Potchefstroom this morning. The initiative, held at 10:00 on 13 June 2025, formed part of the Department of Transport’s ongoing commitment to reducing road fatalities and encouraging responsible behavior, especially among young road users, during peak travel periods. Image: Department of Transport  Facebook A Timely Intervention Before Youth Day Travels Youth Day, commemorated on 16 June, traditionally sees increased travel across South Africa as young people return home to honour the 1976 Soweto uprisings. Recognizing heightened risk on our roads during such extended weekends, the Department of Transport organized an engagement on the N12 to coincide with Youth Day ‘25 activities. Minister Creecy and Deputy Minister Hlengwa joined traffic officers, road safety officials, and partner agencies for an on-site briefing and public engagement. Collaboration Across Agencies At the event on the N12, which includes visible traffic checks and demonstration stops, officers from the Road Traffic Management Corporation, South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL), Road Accident Fund, Cross-Border Road Transport Agency, Road Traffic Infringement Agency, and Arrive Alive will join forces. Representatives will distribute informational materials, conduct vehicle inspections, and engage directly with motorists and youth groups gathered at the site. A row of traffic cones and patrol vehicles will underscore the hands-on nature of the campaign: teams will perform basic vehicle safety checks, tyre conditions, lights, brakes, and offer guidance on safe loading practices for those traveling with goods. Educational pamphlets will highlight key messages: “Don’t Drink and Drive,” “Wear Your Seatbelt,” “Observe Speed Limits,” and “Plan Your Trip: Rest and Avoid Fatigue.” Youth ambassadors from local schools and community organizations will be participating by sharing personal testimonies about the consequences of reckless driving. Youth Engagement at the Forefront In keeping with the “Youth Day ’25” theme, a small stage area will be set up near the traffic stop, where invited youth spokespeople addressed passing motorists and assembled spectators. They will recount the impact of road crashes on families and communities, urging peers to be advocates for safe driving among their circles. A short video featuring local young drivers recounting lessons learned from near-misses will also be played on mobile screens, capturing attention and sparking conversation. Data-Driven Focus on High-Risk Behaviors The Department of Transport highlighted recent statistics showing that long weekends historically register spikes in road fatalities, with the 18–25 age group disproportionately affected. Drink-driving, speeding, and driver fatigue were cited as leading contributing factors. Minister Creecy noted that the campaign is one element in a broader strategy combining enforcement blitzes, targeted education, and collaboration with provincial and local authorities to reduce casualties year-round. Looking Beyond the Weekend While the immediate focus is on the Youth Day long weekend, both Minister Creecy and Deputy Minister Hlengwa emphasized that road safety is an ongoing priority. They called for sustained community partnerships, enhanced driver training programs, and improved roadside assistance services. Plans were announced to engage with universities and youth organizations throughout the year to embed road safety advocacy in extracurricular and orientation programs. Image: Department of Transport Facebook Public Response and Next Steps Motorists who stop at the event would be able to commend the visible presence of authorities and the constructive tone of the engagements. Many will accept educational materials and pledged to share the messages on social media and among friends. Traffic officials will be focusing on raising awareness rather than penalizing minor infringements. The Department of Transport has scheduled follow-up discussions with local municipalities and traffic departments across provinces to replicate similar road safety days ahead of other long weekends, such as Heritage Day and Christmas. A digital toolkit, including posters, social media assets, and short videos, will be made available for community groups and schools to run their own mini-campaigns. Wrapping Up As South Africans prepare to observe Youth Day, the road safety awareness campaign led by Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa in Potchefstroom sends a clear message: safe travel choices save lives. By combining enforcement, education, and youth-led advocacy, the Department of Transport aims not only to reduce accidents over the upcoming long weekend but also to foster a lasting culture of responsible driving among the nation’s youth. Motorists are reminded to plan journeys in advance, ensure vehicles are properly maintained, avoid alcohol or substance use when driving, observe speed limits, and take regular breaks to prevent fatigue. Every stakeholder, government, communities, families, and young people themselves, plays a part in making South Africa’s roads safer for all. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #stroomstories #potchgazette #ArriveAlive

  • Protect Your Roofs & Pools: The Benefits of SUPA Rubber’s Latex-Based Waterproofing Paint in Potchefstroom

In Potchefstroom, intense sun and sudden thunderstorms can take a toll on buildings, causing roofs to leak and pools to crack if they’re not properly protected . Image : Facebook SUPA Rubber Water intrusion isn’t just an annoyance; it can lead to expensive damage like rotting wood, mold, and ruined interiors . Fortunately, modern solutions are at hand ,notably latex-based waterproofing paint that creates a flexible, rubberized seal to keep water out . SUPA Rubber Potchefstroom specializes in this technology, offering an eco-friendly latex coating that forms a durable barrier on roofs, swimming pools, and other surfaces . Protecting Your Roof from Leaks   Applying a latex-based rubber coating to a roof.   Roofs  are one of the most vulnerable parts of any building when it comes to water damage. Over time, sun exposure and rain can cause tiny cracks, gaps around screws, or deteriorating sealant on a roof ,all of which lead to leaks. A coat of latex-based rubber paint effectively seals the roof by filling in hairline cracks and covering seams . Once cured, the rubber layer forms a continuous waterproof membrane with no gaps for water to sneak through . This protective membrane stays intact through Potchefstroom’s blazing sun, heavy rain, and temperature swings. Unlike ordinary roof coatings that might become brittle, the SUPA Rubber layer remains tough and flexible even in extreme weather . It’s highly UV-resistant and formulated for South Africa’s climate, so the highveld sun won’t break it down easily . In fact, applying this latex-based paint is like adding a 10+ year shield to your roof , it prevents leaks season after season with minimal upkeep . Homeowners have reported that even after years of punishing sun and storms, their SUPA Rubber coating stays waterproof and intact . Thanks to its elasticity, the coating can flex with the roof during daily temperature changes while maintaining a watertight bond . Image : Facebook SUPA Rubber Waterproofing Swimming Pools and Ponds Just as roofs keep water out, swimming pools (and garden ponds) need to keep water in . Even a small leak in a pool can lead to surprising water loss (and higher bills) over time. Latex-based waterproofing paint is a fantastic solution here because it creates a 100% waterproof, seamless liner inside the pool . It’s like adding a flexible new skin that adheres to the pool’s concrete or fiberglass surface, sealing up any hairline cracks or tiny holes. The rubberized coating handles the constant pressure of water and slight ground movements without splitting or coming loose . It’s also formulated to resist pool chemicals ,even chlorine won’t cause it to peel or degrade . Another advantage for pools and ponds is that the solution is safe. Once cured, the latex is non-toxic (no VOCs), which means it’s fish-friendly for pond life. The rubber finish is smooth with no rough seams, so algae has trouble clinging and the pool is easier to keep clean. And just like a roof, you can choose a coating color that suits your style for example, a calming blue for a pool or an earthy tone for a pond. With this latex-based coating, your pool essentially gains a durable inner shell that keeps the water where it belongs. Say goodbye to constantly refilling or patching leaks, the rubber seal holds water in place season after season. In the long run, that saves water (and money) and ensures your pool or water feature stays in top condition. Image : Facebook SUPA Rubber Key Technical Features of SUPA Rubber’s Waterproofing Paint Easy Application & Fast Drying:  SUPA Rubber’s coating goes on like regular paint (brush, roller, or spray) and typically dries within a few hours (fully cured in 24 - 48 hours). Long Lifespan & Durability:  A proper application creates a tough membrane that often lasts over a decade before needing major upkeep . (For best results, a refresher coat at around 5 years is recommended .) The rubber layer also resists cracking or peeling, so you won’t be re-waterproofing every season. UV & Weather Resistant:  The latex-based formula is UV-stabilized and built to endure tough weather conditions . Intense sun, heavy rains, and temperature extremes won’t easily degrade the coating, so it remains effective through hot summers and cold, wet winters. Your Local Waterproofing Experts in Potchefstroom A big benefit of choosing SUPA Rubber Potchefstroom  is getting cutting-edge waterproofing with hometown convenience. You don’t need to search far for a fix, advanced leak-proofing technology is available right here in town . If you have a leaky roof or a damp pool, the solution is practically around the corner, with local experts ready to help . The team provides not just the paint, but also expert guidance on how to use it effectively for your specific project . They can advise on surface preparation, application techniques, and more to ensure you get the best results. And if you’re not keen on DIY, they have trusted local contractors who can apply it for you and make sure every inch is sealed correctly . This combination of an advanced product and hands-on support means you’re truly in good hands ,it’s no surprise they’re seen as a reliable partner for waterproofing needs in the community . By choosing SUPA Rubber, you’ll not only extend the life of your roof and pool, but also support a local business that’s keeping Potchefstroom dry, one roof and  pool at a time

  • Bringing Sweet Nostalgia to Life – The Homemade Magic of Le Floss Candy Floss

In a world saturated with high-tech entertainment and fast-moving trends, there’s something timelessly comforting about the simple joy of candy floss. For many of us, the pastel swirls of sugary fluff are tied to the laughter of childhood, school carnivals, and the giddy excitement of funfairs. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations If you've been in the area and spotted colourful tubs of candy floss at an event, or perhaps seen the delight of kids crowding around a spinning machine at a birthday party, chances are Le Floss was behind it. Their motto may not be written out in lights, but it's clearly spun into every batch: homemade joy, sweet and simple. A Home-Based Brand with a Whimsical Twist Le Floss isn’t a corporate name or a franchise operation. It’s a home-based business  with over three years of dedication to the sweet craft of candy floss. The woman behind the fluff, Jolandi, has quietly built a reputation for delivering top-quality, freshly made candy floss that’s both delicious and visually delightful. She prepares every order from scratch, ensuring each unit is spun fresh, packaged with care, and if requested, fitted with custom labels that match your theme or brand. Not Just for Kids One of the most surprising things about Le Floss is how widely appealing candy floss remains. Of course, kids love it, there’s no denying the thrill of watching sugar spin into colourful clouds right before your eyes. But adults, too, seem to gravitate toward the nostalgic comfort of it. Whether it's a community market, a school fundraiser, or even a baby shower, Le Floss has become a familiar and welcome presence across Potchefstroom. “I saw people of all ages queuing up for candy floss at a local flea market,” one event-goer remarked. “The kids couldn’t wait, but what stood out was how many grown-ups were just as eager. It brings back memories. And honestly, it tastes even better than I remember.” That reaction isn't unusual. Candy floss may be simple in ingredients, essentially just sugar and air, but it’s complex in emotion. It triggers nostalgia, wonder, and joy , all wrapped up in a swirl of pastel sweetness. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations From Live Spinning to Custom-Packed Tubs Le Floss offers two main services that cater to different types of clients and events. First, there's the machine rental option . Whether you're hosting a child’s birthday party or a school fun day, Le Floss can set up a live candy floss spinning station. It’s entertainment and a treat all in one, the machine becomes a magnet for curious eyes and excited smiles. The process is interactive, theatrical, and fun to watch. It becomes an experience rather than just a snack. Then, for those looking for convenience or resale options, there’s the pre-packed tub . Each tub is sealed for freshness, available in a variety of colours and flavours, and can be fitted with personalised labels for birthdays, corporate branding, or themed events. According to the latest Le Floss ad, the contactless convenience of ordering via WhatsApp has made this option especially popular with businesses, parents, and party planners. Why Local Matters Supporting local businesses like Le Floss isn't just about shopping small, it’s about investing in the character and culture of the community . While big brands can ship generic goods, there's something incredibly special about a product that’s made with heart, tailored to your needs, and backed by real people who care about your event. Le Floss doesn't operate out of a factory. It operates out of a home, in a town where word-of-mouth still matters and smiles are part of the product. That’s not just a business model, it’s a value system. And for Potchefstroom residents, it’s a sweet reminder that small businesses often offer the biggest flavour and the warmest service. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations A Treat That’s Always in Season Candy floss might once have been reserved for funfairs and circuses, but Le Floss is proving that it has a place at modern events of all shapes and sizes. It’s now showing up at baby showers, holiday markets, corporate functions, family photo shoots, and wedding candy tables . The versatility of the product, combined with its nostalgic charm, makes it an easy win for planners and parents alike. And let’s face it: in a world where social media loves anything pastel and photogenic, candy floss fits right in. Whether it’s pink vanilla on a stick or a layered tub of blue raspberry and lime, it’s bound to attract attention (and more than a few Instagram posts). So next time you’re planning a celebration, looking for a local gift idea, or just craving a soft bite of childhood, consider reaching out to Le Floss. It’s a treat that doesn’t just taste good, it feels good too. 📞 Orders & Bookings via WhatsApp: 061 308 0946 📍 Based in Potchefstroom Webbie Link: https://www.thegotoguy.co.za/potchefstroom/le-floss #TheGoToGy #potchefstroom #potchgazette #stroomstories

  • Balancing Academics and Athletics: A Closer Look at Soetdorings Residence

Soetdorings is one of the residences at NWU Potchefstroom that has, over the past five years, integrated rugby athletes into the broader student community through a flat-style living arrangement. Within walking distance of the Fanie du Toit Sports Centre, the HPI gymnasium, and core campus facilities, Soetdorings provides an environment where rugby players balance training demands with academic responsibilities and everyday student life. This article offers an informative look at Soetdorings: its location and atmosphere, accommodation layout, admission requirements, communal dynamics, support services, and how shared sports facilities tie into daily routines. Location & Context Situated within easy walking distance of major training venues, particularly the Fanie du Toit Sports Centre and HPI gymnasium, Soetdorings occupies a strategic spot on the NWU Potchefstroom campus. Beyond proximity to sports facilities, its location also allows residents quick access to lecture halls, library resources, the student centre, and common social spaces. In the evenings, the neighborhood around Soetdorings is generally calm, offering quieter study conditions, while daytime foot traffic reflects the rhythm of campus life: students moving between classes, training sessions, and weekend events. Because Soetdorings participates in the standard hostel life of NWU, rugby players living here experience the routines and rituals common to many students, shared meals, social gatherings, RAG initiatives, cultural nights, while also accommodating the unique schedule of athlete life. This blending of athlete-specific and general student experiences creates a context where sporting commitments coexist with the broader demands of university life. Accommodation Features Soetdorings offers a range of flat configurations designed for small groups of residents: Four-bedroom flats Three-bedroom flats Two-bedroom flats Each flat is self-contained, featuring a private kitchen and bathroom. Within a flat: Kitchen and Dining Area : Equipped for basic meal preparation and storage. Residents plan and prepare meals together or individually, fostering life skills in cooking and nutrition suited to athletic needs. Private Bedrooms : Each resident has a dedicated room furnished with a bed, a study desk, wardrobe/storage, and sufficient lighting. This private space supports rest and focused study, essential when training schedules include early mornings or late evenings. Shared Living Space : A small living/dining area serves as a communal spot for relaxation, informal discussions, study sessions, or flat meetings. Its presence encourages cooperation in chores and planning. Bathroom Facilities : Each flat’s private bathroom reduces congestion compared to larger shared-bath arrangements, making it easier to coordinate around training times. Laundry Arrangements : While each flat lacks its own washing machines, Soetdorings offers accessible on-site or nearby laundry facilities. Systems for scheduling use help manage peak periods (e.g., weekends or after matches) . This flat-style setup emphasizes independence and practical skills, residents learn budgeting for groceries, meal planning aligned with athletic requirements, and living cooperatively with flatmates, while remaining within a structured campus environment. Daily Life & Community Integration Because Soetdorings has been part of NWU hostel life for several years, residents partake in the customary activities of the wider student community: RAG and Cultural Events : Rugby players join RAG (Residence Affairs Group) initiatives, charity drives, fundraising events, campus festivals and cultural nights where students showcase talents and traditions. Participation in these events is part of the admission criteria and fosters a sense of belonging across residences. Study and Training Balance : A typical weekday for a rugby athlete residing at Soetdorings might begin with an early breakfast prepared in the flat kitchen, followed by a walk to morning training at nearby fields or the gym. After training and recovery, residents attend lectures or labs, perhaps meeting flatmates in study sessions in the afternoon. Evening recovery routines (stretching, ice-bath visits) blend into communal downtime, watching match replays together or group dinners. Flat Responsibilities : Residents share tasks such as kitchen cleaning, shopping coordination, and maintaining living spaces. These chores teach collaboration and time management, skills that parallel teamwork on the field. Peer Support : Living alongside fellow athletes (and sometimes non-athlete students) creates informal support networks: training partners emerge naturally among flatmates or neighbors, study buddies form across flat boundaries, and advice on nutrition or injury prevention circulates within the community. Over weekends, when matches or tournaments occur, flatmates coordinate logistics (transport, post-match meals, rest strategies), and during quieter academic periods, they adjust group routines to focus on assignments and exam preparation. Image: NWU Support Services & Shared Facilities Soetdorings residents benefit from NWU’s comprehensive sports infrastructure and support network, integrated into daily routines: Rugby Fields : Seven floodlit fields nearby allow flexible training schedules, accommodating early mornings or late-evening practice when academic timetables demand daytime attention. Sport Science Laboratory : Accessible for performance testing, research-driven training adjustments, and monitoring of physical metrics. Athletes can schedule sessions without extensive travel. Sport-Medical Consultation Rooms : On-campus access to sports physicians, physiotherapists, biokineticists, sports psychologists, and nutritionists. Proximity reduces downtime when addressing injuries or planning nutrition strategies. Computerised Sport Information Centre : Central hub for data on training loads, match analysis, and performance tracking. Residents often review findings together to inform personal training plans. Rehabilitation Facilities : A swimming pool and ice-bath near Soetdorings support recovery routines. After intense sessions, athletes walk back to the residence or to communal recovery areas, reinforcing habits of timely rest and rehabilitation. Gymnasium : Equipped with a Hammer Strength Super Circuit for strength training and apparatus suitable for injury rehabilitation. Cardio machines, cycle ergometers, rowing machines, treadmills, are readily available for conditioning work. The closeness to Soetdorings means athletes can fit in short gym sessions between classes. Conference Facilities : Meeting rooms serve for team strategy discussions, workshops on tactics or nutrition seminars, and occasionally for study groups or residence meetings. Soetdorings exemplifies an informative case study of how university residences can accommodate the rigorous demands of rugby athletes while preserving the essence of broader student life. Through its flat-style accommodation, strategic location near training and academic facilities, clear admission criteria, and integration with NWU’s extensive sports infrastructure, Soetdorings allows residents to navigate training, studies, and social engagement in tandem. • Invictus Residence: A New Chapter in NWU’s Support for High-Performance Athletes

In February 2025, NWU Potchefstroom formally unveiled Invictus Residence, a purpose-built home for high-performance student-athletes. Unveiled by Dr Rassie Erasmus, the strategist behind South Africa’s back-to-back Rugby World Cup victories, the residence draws on the Latin term “Invictus,” meaning “unconquered.” This symbolic naming underscores a commitment to nurturing sporting potential across disciplines, providing an environment where athletes can integrate rigorous training, academic responsibilities, and everyday campus life. Image: NWU Historical Context and Naming Invictus Residence, established in 2023 under the working name Dennepark-North, gained its official title in early 2025. The unveiling by Dr Erasmus highlighted both his role in South African rugby and the broader ethos behind the residence: spotting and developing talent that might otherwise go unnoticed. By invoking “Invictus,” the residence positions itself as a place where student-athletes, from track and field to hockey, cricket, and beyond, are empowered to pursue excellence without compromise. Image: NWU Location & Campus Integration Campus Placement : Invictus sits approximately a 10–15 minute walk from NWU Potchefstroom’s main academic buildings. This distance strikes a balance between proximity and a degree of separation, allowing residents to transition smoothly between training, classes, and rest. Proximity to Sports Facilities : All major NWU sports venues lie within easy reach: rugby and soccer fields, athletics track, Fanie du Toit Sports Centre, HPI gymnasium, and rehabilitation facilities. Early-morning workouts or late-night practice sessions are feasible without lengthy commutes. Surrounding Environment : The residential zone around Invictus offers a relatively calm atmosphere in the evenings, useful for study and recovery, while daytime foot traffic reflects the rhythms of campus life. Its position encourages athletes to feel part of the wider student community while maintaining focused routines. Image: NWU Accommodation & Layout Structure and Capacity : Mirroring the model of earlier sport-focused residences, Invictus comprises four blocks, each housing 25 single rooms. Launched in 2023 to meet growing demand, its layout emphasizes private living spaces for rest and study alongside shared communal areas. Room Features : Each single room includes basic but functional furnishings: a bed, study desk with adequate lighting, storage or wardrobe space, and windows for natural light. Residents thus have a dedicated environment for rest after training and concentrated academic work. Communal Facilities : Bathrooms : Each block contains communal bathroom areas (multiple shower stalls and separate toilet cubicles) designed to accommodate the schedules of many athletes. Kitchens : Shared kitchens in each block equip residents to prepare meals that meet nutritional requirements, with sink, countertop, storage cupboards, and refrigerator space. Laundry Rooms : Washing areas feature a basin, washing machine, and tumble dryer; usage schedules help prevent conflicts during peak times. Common Lounges or Study Halls : Blocks may include a small lounge or study hall, offering space for group study, informal team meetings, or relaxation between training and classes. Modern Touches : As a newer facility, Invictus may incorporate energy-efficient fixtures and recently furnished common areas. Any additional amenities, outdoor seating, enhanced Wi-Fi, or specialized study pods, can be highlighted once details are confirmed. Community-Building Spaces : Intentional design elements (e.g., notice boards for training schedules, communal whiteboards for team tactics discussions) help integrate academic and athletic life. Outdoor seating areas, if available, support informal gatherings and recovery routines. Image: NWU Daily Life & Community Dynamics Integration with Other Residences : While Invictus is exclusively dedicated to high-performance athletes, it remains part of the broader residence network (including Siya Kolisi and Soetdorings). Joint events, inter-residence sports or social gatherings, and mentorship pairings encourage cross-residence connections. Typical Routine : A resident’s day might begin with an early run or gym session, followed by lectures in central campus buildings. Between classes, study groups may meet in block lounges. Evenings often involve recovery sessions, visiting the pool or ice-bath, before returning to the room or a communal area for rest or light social interaction. Multisport Cohort : Unlike rugby-specific residences, Invictus houses athletes from diverse disciplines, track and field, hockey, cricket, swimming, and more. This diversity fosters cross-disciplinary learning: for instance, a sprinter and a swimmer might share insights on conditioning or recovery. Cultural and Social Activities : Residents participate in RAG events, cultural nights, and community service initiatives alongside non-athlete students, ensuring that athletic commitments do not isolate them from broader campus life. Such involvement reinforces time-management skills and broadens perspectives. Image: NWU Support Services & Shared Facilities Invictus residents benefit from NWU’s centralized sports infrastructure and academic support: Rugby and Sports Fields : Seven floodlit fields and various sport-specific venues allow flexible practice schedules. Sport Science Laboratory : On-campus facilities for performance analysis, research-informed training adjustments, and monitoring of physical metrics. Medical Consultation Rooms : Ready access to sports physicians, physiotherapists, biokineticists, sports psychologists, and nutritionists minimizes downtime for injury treatment or preventive care. Computerised Sport Information Centre : Hub for data-driven insights, training loads, match/video analysis, and performance tracking, encouraging evidence-based improvements. Rehabilitation Facilities : Swimming pool, ice bath, and recovery areas located nearby support consistent recovery routines. Gymnasium : Equipped with Hammer Strength Super Circuit, strength and conditioning apparatus, and cardio machines (cycle ergometers, rowing machines, treadmills) suited for both general fitness and injury rehabilitation. Conference and Meeting Rooms : Spaces for strategy sessions, workshops on tactics or sports science topics, group study sessions, or residence meetings. Academic and Wellness Resources : Campus study spaces, tutoring programmes, and wellness seminars (mental health, time management) complement residence-based support. Innovative Programming : As a newer residence, Invictus may pilot programs such as wearable-tech integration for training monitoring or dedicated workshops on emerging sports science topics; these initiatives often originate from feedback by early residents and staff collaboration. Image: NWU Invictus Residence, bearing a name unveiled by Dr Rassie Erasmus in February 2025, represents NWU Potchefstroom’s evolving approach to supporting high-performance student-athletes across multiple disciplines. Since its establishment in 2023, the residence has offered single-room accommodation within a community designed for balancing early-morning training, academic workloads, and active campus engagement. With access to NWU’s comprehensive sports, medical, and academic facilities, plus a culture shaped by inaugural cohorts, Invictus serves as an informative example of how universities can foster holistic development in student-athletes. As the residence continues to mature, its ongoing integration of innovative support and community-building initiatives promises to benefit future generations of athletes striving for success both on the field and in their studies. • Friday the 13th: Unraveling the Myth of the Unluckiest Day

Friday the 13th has earned a reputation as a day of dread, even earning the title of “the most feared date in history” by some experts en.wikipedia.org . From horror movie villains to everyday folks changing their plans, this date carries an eerie aura. But how did an ordinary day on the calendar become synonymous with bad luck? In this lighthearted dive, we explore the history behind the Friday the 13th superstition, how different cultures view the number 13, some modern pop-culture fun, and other classic bad-luck omens that give us the heebie-jeebies. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations The Unlucky Origins of Friday the 13th A Norse Myth and a Biblical Tale:  One origin story traces back to Norse mythology. In a famous tale, 12 gods were enjoying a dinner party in Valhalla when Loki, the trickster god, crashed the gathering as the 13th guest. Chaos ensued and the beloved god Balder was killed during the scuffle, casting a dark shadow over the number 13 livescience.com . This idea of “13 at the table”  being unlucky later spread to Christian lore: at the Last Supper, Jesus dined with his 12 apostles, and it was the 13th guest, Judas, the betrayer, who set tragedy in motion. Ever since, thirteen  at a table or in a group has been viewed by many as a bad omen, essentially “courting death” history.com . Why Friday?  The day Friday  itself has some gloomy traditions in Western culture. For Christians, Good Friday was the day of Jesus’s crucifixion, not exactly a cheerful anniversary. Some legends even claim other biblical disasters happened on Fridays (from Eve handing Adam that fateful apple to Cain committing the first murder) history.com . Whether or not those claims hold water, Fridays developed a bit of a “bad luck” reputation in folklore (sailors, for example, long considered it unlucky to begin voyages on a Friday). When you pair an inauspicious day like Friday with an unlucky number like 13, you get a double-whammy of superstition! The Knights Templar Connection:  One popular (though murky)  theory for the Friday–13th superstition’s origin involves the Knights Templar . On Friday, October 13, 1307, the French king ordered a mass arrest of the Knights Templar, a wealthy medieval military order. Many Templars were imprisoned or executed, and the date gained infamy history.com . Some storytellers later linked this event to the notion that Friday the 13th = disaster , but historians note that this connection didn’t actually become part of superstition lore until much later. In fact, there’s no record of Friday the 13th being singled out as especially unlucky before the 1800s en.wikipedia.org , it seems the fear really caught on in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Unlucky (and Lucky) 13 Around the World Superstition is a global phenomenon, but not everyone shares the Friday the 13th  jitters. Different cultures attach bad luck to different numbers and days: Tuesday the 13th?  In many Spanish-speaking countries, as well as in Greece, the unlucky day isn’t Friday but Tuesday the 13th  ( Martes 13  in Spanish) en.wikipedia.org . Tuesday is tied to Mars (the god of war), and indeed in Greek history some awful events, like the fall of Constantinople, happened on a Tuesday, cementing its ill omen . A common proverb even warns, “On Tuesdays, don’t get married or embark on a journey.” Friday the 17th in Italy:  In Italy, the number 13 is usually considered lucky , it’s 17  that gives people the creeps! en.wikipedia.org   Why 17? When written as the Roman numeral XVII, it can be rearranged to spell “VIXI,”  which in Latin means “I have lived”  , implying one’s life is over . Thus, venerdì 17  (Friday the 17th) is viewed as a bad luck day in Italian culture. Ironically, Friday the 13th is not a big deal there, and some Italians even embrace 13 as a good-luck number . Other Cultures:  In many East Asian  countries, the number 13 isn’t feared much at all, instead it’s the number 4  that’s avoided (because the word for “four” sounds like the word for “death” in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean). Many tall buildings in China skip the 4th floor the way Western hotels skip the 13th en.wikipedia.org . And funnily enough, in some traditions 13 can be lucky : for example, a baker’s dozen (13) was considered a generous bonus loaf, and in Wiccan practice a full coven is ideally 13 members strong. All this goes to show that “unlucky 13”  is far from a universal truth, it really depends on which folklore you follow. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Modern Myth-Making and Pop Culture Friday the 13th may have spooky roots, but today it’s also a pop culture star. The superstition exploded into the modern mainstream in the 1900s, evolving from whispers to world-famous meme. Here are a few ways this unlucky  day has left its mark on modern culture: Scary Stories and Silver Screen:  An early milestone was the 1907 novel Friday, the Thirteenth , in which author Thomas Lawson crafted a tale of a stockbroker who uses the date’s ominous reputation to spark chaos on Wall Street history.com . But the superstition truly slashed its way into pop culture with the 1980 horror film Friday the 13th , introducing us to the hockey-masked villain Jason Voorhees. The low-budget slasher became a blockbuster hit and spawned numerous sequels, turning Friday the 13th into a household name synonymous with spooky fun. Now, every time the calendar aligns, you can expect movie marathons and tongue-in-cheek references to Camp Crystal Lake. Social Media and Memes:  In the age of the internet, Friday the 13th has become a trending topic for jokes and memes . You’ll see people tweeting things like “I’m not superstitious, but I’m staying in bed today , just in case!”  or sharing GIFs of black cats and Jason’s mask. It’s practically a mini-holiday for horror fans and meme-lovers alike. Far from cowering in fear, many folks now lean into the day’s mystique  to have a little fun. (There’s even a tradition of $13 tattoo specials  at some tattoo parlors on Friday the 13th, catering to those who want a lucky  ink on an unlucky  day.) Fear and Business Myths:  Of course, some people do take the fear seriously. There’s actually a clinical name for extreme fear of Friday the 13th: paraskevidekatriaphobia  (try saying that three times fast!). In fact, there are two  equally tongue-twisting terms for this phobia history.com . It’s been estimated that 17–21 million Americans  are affected by Friday-the-13th anxiety, with some so paralyzed by fear they avoid travel, work, or even getting out of bed. Urban legend claims this costs businesses up to nearly a billion dollars  in lost activity each Friday the 13th en.wikipedia.org , though airlines have noted no significant dip in passengers on these Fridays . So, while the “Friday 13 effect”  may be exaggerated, it’s true that this age-old superstition still gives plenty of people pause. Other Bad-Luck Superstitions and Their Origins   A black cat calmly stares from the corner of a cozy room, depending on where you are in the world, you might either grin or cringe at this sight. Humans have a long history of assigning luck (good or bad) to random things. We’ve already seen how one spooky date on the calendar can cause a stir, but it’s far from the only superstition in town. Here are a few other common bad-luck omens and the surprisingly rich origins behind them. Black Cats:  In much of Europe and America, a black cat crossing your path is thought to herald bad luck. This age-old notion dates back to medieval times when black cats became linked to witchcraft and the devil . In 1233 AD , Pope Gregory IX issued a papal decree (Vox in Rama) that denounced black cats as incarnations of Satan, spurring witch hunts across Europe history.com . Folklore evolved such that people believed a black cat might be a witch’s familiar or even a witch in disguise. If one crossed your path, it could be on a dark mission , possibly the devil himself paying you a visit. No wonder folks were wary! (Ironically, in other parts of the world black cats are seen as good  luck, the ancient Egyptians  revered them, and even in Britain a black cat can be considered a lucky charm for brides or sailors.) Broken Mirrors:   “Seven years’ bad luck”  follows if you break a mirror, or so the superstition says. This belief was born with the ancient Romans , who were among the first to use glass mirrors. The Romans believed that people’s health and fortunes renewed every seven years , so if you shattered a mirror (and with it, presumably, your reflection/essence), you were in for seven tough years until luck rebuilt itself livescience.com . Another explanation is the idea that a mirror doesn’t just reflect your face, it reflects your soul . To break a mirror was to harm the soul, leaving it in pieces and unable to protect you from misfortune people.howstuffworks.com . Either way, our ancestors clearly took mirrors seriously! (On the bright side, superstition offers escape clauses: e.g. carefully burying the broken pieces or throwing salt over your shoulder to nullify the curse.) Walking Under Ladders:  Most of us walk around an open ladder instinctively, partly for safety, but partly thanks to this classic superstition. It originates about 5,000 years ago in ancient Egypt : a ladder leaning against a wall forms a triangular shape, and to the Egyptians the triangle was sacred  (representing the trio of gods, much like the pyramid shape) livescience.com . Walking through  that triangle was seen as violating its sanctity and courting bad luck. Centuries later, Christians added their own twist: a ladder had rested against the Cross during Jesus’s crucifixion, so the ladder came to symbolize betrayal and death, passing beneath it was like inviting wickedness or fate’s fury upon yourself. In old England, people even forced condemned prisoners to walk under a ladder on their way to the gallows, driving home the omen. Today, we mostly avoid walking under ladders to prevent a bucket of paint (or a clumsy painter) from falling on our heads, but hey, a little extra superstition doesn’t hurt! Spilled Salt:  Ever notice someone toss a pinch of salt over their shoulder after knocking over the salt shaker? This quirky response comes from a very old belief that spilling salt is bad luck . Salt has been prized by humans for millennia (the word “salary”  even derives from the Latin for salt, reflecting its value). So in ancient times, wasting salt was frowned upon and people thought it might invite evil spirits  or misfortune. Records show that around 3,500 B.C., the Sumerians  would counteract bad luck from spilled salt by tossing a pinch over their left shoulder livescience.com . Why the left shoulder? That’s where those sneaky evil spirits are said to lurk, a pinch of salt in the eye drives them away (and “blinds the devil”). This practice spread through the Egyptians, Romans, and beyond, persisting into the superstition we still casually perform at dinner tables today. Superstitions and Smiles Superstitions like Friday the 13th  and its quirky cousins (beware that cat! mind the mirror shards!) have endured not because they’re based in fact, spoiler: they aren’t, but because they add a dash of mystery and fun to our lives. There’s something oddly comforting about sharing the same little irrational fears and rituals as our ancestors. Whether we genuinely shiver at the thought of an unlucky day or just play along for laughs, these myths bind us through culture and time. In the end, Friday the 13th  is what we make of it. It can be a day of paranoia, sure… or an excuse to throw a costume party and binge-watch horror flicks. So the next time the 13th falls on a Friday, you might double-check your ladder footing and handle that mirror with care, or you might just chuckle, “Ha, it’s Friday the 13th!”  and carry on as usual. After all, as any rational black cat would tell you, it’s all in good fun and a little luck never hurt anyone . Stay lucky, and watch out for those ladder triangles! #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #potchgazette #stroomstories #Superstitions

  • From Students to Stars – Matric Farewell Memories Captured Right

👗🕴️👗🕴️👗🕴️👗🕴️👗🕴️👗🕴️👗🕴️ In South Africa the matric dance (matric farewell) marks the end of high school, a milestone. It is celebrated with great fanfare, as students and families acknowledge the challenges of getting this far. One education charity notes the matric ball “marks the end of a long and arduous journey” and celebrates “the next step” in a student’s life . In fact, only about two‑thirds of South African students complete Grade 12 , so those who make it to matric are especially celebrated. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Communities often extend resources so graduates can attend in style: families save for months to buy ballgowns, tuxedos and even limousines for the big night . Neighbours and relatives turn out on red carpets to cheer as matriculants in formal wear arrive, a “monumental moment” of pride . The matric ball is “far more than just a school dance”, it represents all the commitments and hard work to date, and the decisive steps toward a better future . Even the chance to dress up and take photos is part of the celebration, making graduation photoshoots and keepsakes an important tradition. Embedding these moments in pictures helps families remember the milestone. In Potchefstroom, like many South African towns, matric farewells bring friends and family together to honor the graduates. Students often arrange formal photoshoots and step onto limousines or mock red carpets for snapshots. These images become lifelong reminders of completing this phase of life and entering adulthood. Providing fun, high-tech photo opportunities can make the day even more memorable. SelfieBox North West: Capturing Matric Memories SelfieBox North West (SelfieBox NW) is a Potchefstroom–based photo booth company that brings modern, interactive imaging to events. It offers a wide range of selfie stations and booths, from classic photo kiosks to video and 360° platforms, designed to make parties more fun and memorable . Image: Selfie Box SelfieBox NW’s photo booth experiences blend technology and fun: matrics can strike poses and instantly share creative photos . The company’s booths use AI‑powered filters and custom backdrops, so guests can become red-carpet icons or even comic‑book heroes for a moment . By combining high-tech photography with personalized themes, SelfieBox NW helps capture each matric dance’s unique spirit. 360° Spin Video Booths:  These rotating platforms create dynamic videos from every angle. SelfieBox NW offers various spin setups (from small curved rigs to large aerial platforms) that let students dance and record lively clips. In low light the Infinity LED 360° booth even uses color-changing lights for dazzling effects . AI-Powered Photo Booths:  The latest SelfieBox NW booths use AI filters so every picture is creative. Teens can instantly transform into movie stars or fantasy characters, and a matching digital backdrop can tie in any matric theme . Drone 360° Booth:  In this setup a small drone with a camera flies around the guests, capturing a full 360° video without a platform. Students can jump and dance freely while the drone films; the result is an exciting aerial video perfect for sharing on social media . Instant Social Sharing:  Every SelfieBox station is built for fun online. Guests can print photos on the spot or send them via SMS and social apps. Features like animated GIFs, face‑morphing, hashtag printing and even lip‑sync karaoke booths keep everyone entertained and ready to share their matric moments online.  Retro Pod photo booths add a vintage flair to matric celebrations. SelfieBox NW’s wooden “Retro Pod” offers high‑quality prints with a nostalgic look, complete with old‑school flash and wireless printing, so students can instantly share or keep a classic keepsake . Among its offerings, SelfieBox NW includes nostalgic Retro Pod booths (shown above) that look like antique cameras. These portable wooden booths produce high-quality prints with a vintage style; they even have a real flash and wireless printers so students can hold physical photos moments after snapping them . Whether graduates pose solo or in groups, the Retro Pod creates charming, old‑fashioned snapshots that complement the modern digital fun. Another highlight is the Live Mosaic Wall. Throughout the evening, every photo taken by a guest is instantly added to a giant digital mosaic. The screen compiles individual selfies and group shots into one evolving collage, symbolizing how all the students’ memories fit together . By the end of the night the mosaic shows hundreds of images, a colorful digital keepsake of the entire matric class. These interactive photo experiences fit the spirit of matric farewells perfectly. They let students and families play and pose with creativity, then immediately share or save the results. In Potchefstroom’s matric dances, SelfieBox NW’s booths become part of the entertainment – encouraging laughter, surprises and big smiles. In the words of their own brochure, “each product is thoughtfully designed to engage attendees, capture memories, and boost event engagement”. In practice, this means Potchefstroom matrics can look back on their final school dance with vivid photos and videos, each one a reminder of that special night. By blending fun technology with the deep meaning of the matric dance, SelfieBox North West helps make these milestone celebrations even more unforgettable. As students transition from teens to graduates, they gain not only memories of the night itself, but digital keepsakes, photos, GIFs and videos, that capture their achievement and their joy. SelfieBox NW’s interactive booths ensure that Potchefstroom’s matric farewells are remembered for years to come .
