Gebore op 21 Desember 1985 in die historiese dorp van Paarl, het sy sedertdien haar merk gemaak in die Afrikaanse musiekwereld en daarbuite. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Eerste tree in die musiekwêreld Karlien het haar musikale loopbaan begin as agtergrondsangeres en kitaarspeler vir haar broer, Bobby van Jaarsveld, 'n ander erkende sanger in die Afrikaanse musiekbedryf. Saam het hulle in 2005 opgetree, waar sy nie net sy vertroueling was nie, maar ook 'n saamsmelt van harmonieë op die verhoog. The Cunning Jackal and the Betrayed Lion In the ancestral tales of the indigenous Khoikhoi people, the Black - Backed Jackal shares the stage with the mighty Lion, but not as a subordinate. These cunning creatures, often outsmarting their feline companions, are celebrated for their intelligence and resourcefulness.  The stories depict a Jackal that can outwit the king of the savanna, painting a picture of a clever, wily protagonist. One intriguing legend even suggests that the Black - Backed Jackal's signature dark saddle came into being when it boldly offered to carry the sun on its back, a testament to its audacity. A rarity in the animal kingdom, Black - Backed Jackal couples embark on a shared journey, dedicating their lives to one another and their offspring.  Remarkably, the young from one year's litter often serve as 'helpers,' delaying their own breeding ambitions to assist in raising the next generation, an act that plays a pivotal role in pup survival, unlike any other jackal species. The Eerie Chorus of the Night Black - Backed Jackals are known for their spine-tingling calls that pierce the night's silence. In the early evening, they engage in a haunting exchange of wailing cries, building an otherworldly chorus.  These calls not only serve as a means of communication within their packs but also as a fascinating alarm system. When tailing a predator, the jackal's repeated yapping can often betray an irritated Lion or a watchful Leopard. The Ageless Canine Fossil records tell an astonishing tale of the Black - Backed Jackal. This species, among the oldest known dog species, has remained largely unchanged since the Pleistocene epoch, spanning up to 2.5 million years.  Their unaltered appearance throughout the ages is a testament to their ability to adapt and thrive in the African wilderness. They are among the most significant vectors of rabies in Southern Africa, with epidemics that appear in cyclic intervals.  Their role in disease transmission adds a layer of complexity to their existence, highlighting the interconnectedness of nature's delicate balance. Jackals as Nocturnal Predators Jackals are versatile hunters, equipped to prowl both day and night. Their omnivorous nature means that they scavenge for food, from the remnants of kills left by other predators to smaller mammals they capture themselves.  These resourceful creatures even challenge formidable predators such as Cheetahs for their prey. They are definitely not scared as personal experience showed me how they chase off vultures in large numbers to get to the prized carrion of leftover kills.  Jackal's Daytime Hideaway In the daytime, they retreat into the brush or down under into their densites, remaining hidden from the scorching African sun. While they often hunt alone or in pairs, larger groups may congregate around carcasses.  The sound of larger carnivores at a kill also draws them, as they anticipate the opportunity to scavenge a meal. They stake out specific regions and mark them with their telltale scent, warning other jackals to stay away.  When their territory is breached, they can become fiercely territorial and defend their domain vigorously. Scavengers and Opportunists Jackals are opportunistic feeders. Their diet spans from the remains of animals abandoned by other predators to the animals they capture themselves, including rodents, birds, fruits, and insects.  Their adaptability in securing sustenance is a testament to their resourcefulness. Areas with a lot of rain promise a lot of termite irruptions which in return brings food as Jackals make good use of termite protein during rainy seasons. Exploring the Leopard Tortoises In the heart of the African savannas, a remarkable creature often goes unnoticed, despite its striking appearance and intriguing behaviors.  The Leopard Tortoise (Stigmochelys pardalis) is a captivating resident of eastern and Southern Africa, from Sudan to the southern Cape Province. This Tortoise is a true gem in the animal kingdom with its distinctive markings and unique traits. Taxonomy and Etymology The Leopard Tortoise's journey through the world of taxonomy has been nothing short of an evolutionary odyssey. Initially placed in Geochelone, it later found its home in the genus Stigmochelys, a monotypic genus, signifying that it's the only member of its kind.  One debate that once raged in the scientific community concerned the existence of two subspecies, S. p. pardalis and S. p. babcocki. However, recent research has dissolved this distinction. The scientific name Stigmochelys derives from two Greek words: "stigma," meaning "mark" or "point," and "chelone," which means "tortoise." The specific name "pardalis" is a nod to its leopard-like spots adorning the tortoise's shell, with "pardos" meaning "spotted" in Greek. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Description The Leopard Tortoise is no ordinary reptile, it's the fourth-largest tortoise species globally, reaching an average length of 40 cm and a weight of 13 kg.  However, in the northern and southern regions of its habitat, individuals can grow up to 20 kg and, in exceptional cases, reach an astounding 70 cm and 40 kg. Juveniles and young adults sport vibrant black blotches, spots, and dashes on a yellow background, but these markings gradually fade in mature specimens. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Distribution and Habitat Leopard Tortoises are the true adventurers of the Tortoise world, inhabiting a vast range from South Sudan and Somalia to South Africa and Namibia. They steer clear of the humid forest regions of Central Africa and can be found at altitudes ranging from sea level to 2,900 meters.  This incredible adaptability to different habitats has earned them the title of the most versatile African tortoise. Feeding Behaviour Leopard Tortoises are herbivores with a diverse palate that includes forbs, thistles, grasses, and succulents. They even nibble on berries and fruits when available, and sometimes, astonishingly, gnaw on bones and Hyena feces to acquire calcium essential for their bones and eggshells.  These gentle grazers play a vital role in seed dispersal since seeds can pass undigested through their digestive systems. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Living Fossils Usually active during the day, Leopard Tortoises tend to slow down in hot weather or during dry seasons. They reach sexual maturity between 12 and 15 years of age and can live up to 80 to 100 years.  Mating Rituals of Leopard Tortoise During mating season, males engage in fierce battles for the affections of females, ramming and butting their rivals. They also produce grunting vocalizations during mating. Nesting occurs from May to October, and females lay clutches of five to 30 eggs.  Incubation lasts between 8 to 15 months, depending on temperature. Their eggs and hatchlings face various predators, including Monitor Lizards, Snakes, Jackals, and Crows. Adult Leopard Tortoises, though rarely, may fall victim to Leopards, Lions and Hyenas. Human activities such as agriculture, consumption, and the pet trade have the potential to impact them negatively but have not caused substantial declines yet.  In recent years, there has been a growing trend of breeding them in captivity, reducing the need for collecting them from the wild. The Leopard Tortoise has been listed in Appendix II of CITES since 1975, and the United States banned their import in 2000 due to concerns about heartwater disease carried by Tortoise ticks. Genetic studies have revealed that Stigmochelys is closely related to the Psammobates species in Southern Africa. Ongoing research may uncover more about the intriguing family tree of these slow and steady marvels. During a game drive in the Northern section of Zululand, we had the privilege of observing one of the continent's most formidable and awe-inspiring creatures: the Cape Buffalo. Cape Buffalo Cape Buffalo, also known as the African Buffalo, are renowned as one of the fiercest animals in the African bush. Surprisingly, they claim the unfortunate distinction of being the second-largest cause of human fatalities in Africa each year. Even the mighty Lions approach these imposing beasts with caution, as Cape Buffalos are not to be trifled with. Social Structure One of the most fascinating aspects of Cape Buffalo behavior is their intricate social structure. These robust creatures form herds with a hierarchical system that ensures their survival. During our game drive, we witnessed a large herd of Cape Buffalo congregating near a water source. This is a common sight, especially in the scorching summer days of Zululand, when water becomes a lifeline for these creatures. Captivating Spectacle As we watched, the Buffalo herd provided a captivating spectacle. Dust kicked up as they jostled for position at the watering hole, with mature bulls asserting their dominance, while the younger members learned the art of survival. This gathering around the water source is not only a necessity for quenching their thirst but also a crucial aspect of their social interactions and territorial dynamics. Experience Like No Other Encountering a herd of Cape Buffalo in the wilds of Southern Africa is an experience like no other. These powerful and majestic creatures, with their complex social structures and their unwavering demand for water during hot summer days, remind us of the unyielding beauty and harsh realities of the African wilderness. Awe Inspiring Moments As nature enthusiasts, we are privileged to witness these awe-inspiring moments on game drives, and they serve as a reminder of the importance of conserving the natural world we so deeply admire. African Savanna In the heart of the African savanna, I led my group of eager safari enthusiasts on an expedition to witness the remarkable beauty of the wild. As their nature guide, I promised them an experience they would cherish forever. Female Buffalo A female Buffalo, massive and majestic, was gracefully grazing on the lush, emerald green grass of the savanna. The region we were in was blessed with an abundance of high-nutrition panicum grasses, making it a paradise for herbivores like this Buffalo. Tranquil Moment Captured With my camera in hand, I captured the tranquil moment as the Buffalo leisurely moved through the tall grass, her mighty form a symbol of strength and resilience. She seemed to revel in the bountiful feast that nature had provided, for during this time of year, food was abundant and water sources flowed generously. Sense Of Contentment The Buffalo's every movement exuded a sense of contentment, a reminder of how the rhythm of life in the wild can ebb and flow with the seasons. As I shared this awe-inspiring sight with my group, the serenity of the moment washed over us, reinforcing the importance of preserving these pristine habitats and the incredible creatures that call them home. Left Without Disturbance With the video footage captured, we left the Buffalo to her feast, grateful for having witnessed a snapshot of the natural world at its finest, where the circle of life continued in perfect harmony. It was a safari experience none of us would soon forget, a reminder of the incredible beauty and grace that Mother Nature shares with those willing to seek it. Game Drive On a recent game drive, we were fortunate to witness an intense encounter between two majestic Cheetah brothers and a formidable herd of Buffalo. Tension In The Air As we approached the scene, the tension in the air was palpable. The two Cheetah brothers had their eyes fixed on the approaching herd of Buffalo. Cheetahs are known to primarily hunt smaller prey, but the Buffalo, a giant of the savanna, were no strangers to their presence. The Buffalo seemed to understand that they weren't the typical menu for these sleek predators, but they also knew that their newborn calves could be potential targets if separated from the safety of the herd. The Standoff The standoff continued, creating a heart-pounding moment as we watched these two remarkable species coexist. The Buffalo meandered by, and the Cheetahs remained still, fully aware of the potential consequences of their actions. Natures Dynamics This unique sighting serves as a reminder of the complex interactions that occur in the animal kingdom. Nature's dynamics are a constant source of wonder and fascination, and Southern Africa continues to be a sanctuary for unforgettable wildlife encounters. Delicate Harmony As we left the scene, the Cheetahs' choice to wait and the Buffalo's vigilance left us with a deep appreciation for the delicate harmony of life in the wild.
