Op 19 April 1922 het die geskiedenis van Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom begin met net 38 leerders, almal in Gr8, en twee tydelike onderwysers, mnr J.D. Grundlingh en me Nellie Chessworth. Onder die waaksaamheid van inspekteur Van der Lingen, wat voorlopig as hoof opgetree het, is die skool aanvanklik bekend as die “Afrikaanse Medium Hoërskool,” kortweg “Die Medium” genoem. Die skool was geleë in 'n ou kerkie op die hoek van Potgieter- en Van Riebeeckstraat. Pioniers wat Grondslag Gelê het Die eerste permanente hoof, mnr J.C. (Jack) Pauw, het op 11 Oktober 1922 diens aanvaar, met mnr A.J.P. Burger (ook bekend as oom Koos) wat kort daarna as die eerste permanente onderwyser aangestel is. Hierdie twee pioniers het die fondamente gelê waarop die skool se toekomstige sukses gebou is. Teen die begin van 1923 het die skool na 'n herstelde sinkgebou op die terrein van die Landbougenootskap verhuis, met die leerdertal wat gegroei het tot tussen 130 en 140 in Gr 9 en 10. 'n Nuwe Tuiste en Groei Die hoeksteen van die permanente skoolgebou is op 10 Junie 1927 gelê, en op 23 Februarie 1928 is die gebou amptelik in gebruik geneem met die Administrateur van Transvaal, “Sy Edele” Jan H. Hofmeyer, as hoofspreker. Die skool het van krag tot krag gegroei, en teen 2010 was die leerdertal reeds op 1184, wat gelykop tussen seuns en dogters verdeel was. Die Naam, Skoolkleure en Wapen Op 30 Oktober 1923 het die Beheerliggaam besluit dat die skool bekend sal staan as “Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom”. In 1925 is die skoolkleure—swart, rooi, en goud vas gestel. Die swart is gekies na aanleiding van die swart “kleurbaadjie” wat mnr Pauw graag gedra het; goud verteenwoordig die goudstreek waarin Potchefstroom geleë is; en rooi is bygevoeg om 'n harmonieuse geheel te vorm. Die huidige ontwerp van die skoolwapen, wat in November 1926 aanvaar is, dien as 'n simbool van krag en is veral bekend vir die leuse: “Sapientia vis vera” – wysheid is ware krag. Hierdie leuse, voorgestel deur mnr P.M. van der Lingen, die medestigter van die skool, vang die essensie van Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom se waardes en tradisies perfek vas. Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom is nie net 'n plek van onderrig nie, maar 'n instelling wat diep gewortel is in die gemeenskap en tradisies van Potchefstroom. In our town, PAWS and Free Range Cat Colony (Vee's) play an essential role in rescuing, rehabilitating, and finding loving homes for stray and abandoned pets. Whether through donations, volunteering, or adoption, you too can be a part of their mission. However, this important work cannot be done alone. PAWS relies on the kindness and generosity of the community to continue their mission. Ways to Help PAWS • Donations: PAWS is always in need of pet food, blankets, and monetary contributions to assist with veterinary bills and various projects. • Sponsor a Kennel: For R240 per month, individuals and companies can sponsor a kennel. Sponsors can even visit PAWS, choose a kennel, and have their name or company logo placed on it. • Volunteer Opportunities: Love animals? PAWS welcomes volunteers to help walk dogs, brush cats, and assist in other areas. • The “I Walk a Dog” initiative allows individuals over 18 years old to choose a dog, fill out a form, and provide much-needed exercise and companionship. • Children under 18 can also participate with parental consent, with parents required to fill in the necessary forms. Visit PAWS and walk through the kennels to select a pet. 2. Fill out an adoption pack at the office. 3. A PAWS manager will conduct a home inspection to ensure the environment is suitable. 4. Once approved and sterilization is complete, you can welcome your new pet home! • Foster a Pet: Similar to adoption, fostering includes a home check and allows families to temporarily care for a pet for at least two weeks. If the family decides to adopt the pet permanently (a “foster fail”), a formal adoption process follows. PAWS covers medical expenses during the fostering period. The process is as follows: • Interested individuals can contact Vee, who will arrange a time for them to meet the cats. • During this visit, potential adopters can interact with the cats to find one that connects best with them. • Vee will then guide them through the entire adoption process, which includes sterilization and necessary vaccinations. • Support Vee’s Efforts: Volunteer Vee visits three times a week to care for the cats. Extra hands and resources can go a long way in ensuring these felines are well-fed and cared for. • Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers are also welcome to contact Vee and inquire about what assistance is needed. • Monetary Donations: Financial contributions are also welcome. A separate bank account is maintained for these funds, and each month, receipts for purchases such as dry cat food and veterinary bills, along with a bank statement, are submitted to PAWS to ensure transparency and accurate record-keeping.
