POTCHEFSTROOM — In a sweeping crime and safety operation on 17th August 2023, local authorities cracked down on criminal activities to enhance security measures for Potchefstroom residents. The operation, named "Operation Shanela / Vhuthu Hawe", took place from 07:30 to 16:00 and was spearheaded by the South African Police Service (SAPS) of Potchefstroom. The dedicated team of professionals involved in the operation included representatives from the North West Provincial Traffic, ICASA, Department Of Home Affairs (Immigration), and the Potchefstroom Community Police Forum (CPF). The meticulous planning and execution of the operation were under the leadership of Major General (Dr) R. Naidoo, with Colonel TJ Mahlangu, the SAPS Potchefstroom Visible Policing Commander, as the Operational Commander. The central message from the leadership was clear: intensify efforts against crime to ensure community safety. Major General Naidoo emphasized the need for a more significant police presence, advocating for "more boots on the ground". The primary areas of focus during the operation were the enforcement of the Second Hand Goods Act and the Road Traffic Act. An impressive sweep of the town led to the inspection of 28 cellphone stores by ICASA members. As a result of the operation's efforts, items with an estimated street value of R100,000 were confiscated from various stores in Wandelaan/Walter Sisulu. The seized items comprised: - 2 television sets - 41 wireless headsets - 30 digital speakers - 20 car chargers - 5 cellphones In addition, the team diligently conducted 1 Visible Crime Prevention (VCP), 22 ATM visits, 20 bank checks, 48 foot beats, 18 filling station inspections, 16 shopping mall patrols, and 6 taxi rank reviews. Waar dit alles begin het  Die Impala Hotel het in 1905 sy deure amptelik geopen en het in die afgelope 40 jaar van krag tot krag gegroei. In 1953 het Tertius se oupa die hotel gekoop en is dit nagelaat aan sy seuns. Na sy matriekjaar in 1990 het Tertius hier begin werk en na ses jaar het hy die hotel by sy ouers oorgekoop en is sedertien aan die stuur van sake. Die ou Potties Bar het na COVID ‘n hele opknapping ondergaan en ‘n nuwe naam, restaurant én handelsmerk gekry - Die Local Bar. "Dit is steeds die oudste kroeg in Potchefstroom en een van die mooistes", vertel Tertius trots. Die moeite en detail wat in die opknapping van die hele kroeg gegaan het, kan duidelik gesien word en daar heers ‘n atmosfeer van geselligheid. Met ‘n lekker Afrikaanse speellys in die agtergrond, wat nie oorverdowend hard is nie, en heerlike kosreuke wat uit die kombuis kom, is dit maklik om te sien hoekom gesinne en families hier 'n Saterdagaand of Sondagmiddag ete kom geniet. Die aanvraag vir sokkie [musiek] het afgeneem onder studente en dit is toe dat Tertius besluit het om die groot dansvloer te omskep dat dit meer ‘n klub gevoel het waar besoekers hul lywe kan rondswaai op polsende musiek. Daar is wel steeds voorsiening gemaak vir diegene wat sokkie verkies en dit is juis die projek waarmee hul op die oomblik besig is - om die sokkie dansvloer op te knap en groter te maak.
