  • The Financial Foundations – Why Every Business Needs an Accountant

Whether you're a solo entrepreneur in Ikageng, a retailer in the CBD, or a small manufacturer in Baillie Park, the success of your business hinges on financial clarity. Yet, many local businesses face mounting questions about compliance, tax, and cash flow, often without the guidance to answer them. In an increasingly regulated and competitive environment, professional accountants, like those at Wave Breaking Accountants , play a vital role in helping businesses not only stay afloat, but thrive. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations This article explores the essential foundations that every business needs: from record-keeping and cash flow, to taxes and VAT registration. These aren’t just administrative checkboxes, they are building blocks of financial stability. Financial Records: The Cornerstone of Compliance and Clarity In South Africa, businesses are legally required to maintain financial records for a minimum of five years . These records include invoices, receipts, cash books, payroll files, tax returns, and bank statements. The aim is not only to comply with SARS regulations, but to ensure that business owners have a clear understanding of their financial position at all times. Many Potchefstroom businesses still operate with a mix of manual and informal systems. This results in inconsistent records, missed expenses, and exposure during tax audits.  Accountants step in by: Setting up reliable record-keeping systems, Digitising and archiving historical documents, Reconciling monthly income and expenses, Ensuring all transactions have supporting documentation . Cash Flow Management: Understanding Money In vs. Money Out Cash flow  is the number one reason small businesses in South Africa fail. A 2023 Business Partners SME Confidence Index reported that 60% of local businesses face ongoing cash flow challenges, even when profitable on paper. Accountants help businesses develop real-time visibility into their cash flow through: Monthly cash flow forecasting, Scenario planning (e.g., impact of late payments or price increases), Advising on reserve building, Identifying spending leaks and inefficiencies. For example, a retail store in Potchefstroom might look profitable, but delayed supplier payments or slow-moving inventory could choke cash availability. An accountant can help model different solutions: faster invoicing cycles, price adjustments, or supplier renegotiations. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Tax Obligations: Avoiding Penalties and Gaining Peace of Mind Taxation for South African SMEs includes income tax , provisional tax , PAYE , UIF , and potentially SARS eFiling  admin, all of which come with strict deadlines and regulations. Many small businesses under-report or file late, leading to penalties of up to 200%  or frozen bank accounts. An accountant mitigates this risk by: Registering and updating all relevant tax profiles, Ensuring timely submissions of provisional and annual tax returns, Calculating deductions like home office, fuel, and depreciation, Claiming SBC (Small Business Corporation) tax relief when eligible. Wave Breaking Accountants also assist in reconciling PAYE and UIF, submitting EMP201 and EMP501 reports, and preparing IRP5 certificates for employees. Their tax services ensure business owners can focus on operations, not paperwork. VAT Registration: Knowing When It’s Time to Register Businesses in South Africa must register for VAT  once their annual turnover exceeds R1 million  in any 12-month period. However, many entrepreneurs are unaware that SARS can backdate registration  and apply penalties. Beyond compliance, VAT registration also brings potential financial benefits, including: Claiming back input VAT on expenses, Improving supplier credibility, Meeting procurement requirements with large buyers. Accountants assess whether voluntary VAT registration is beneficial for businesses under the threshold (minimum R50,000 turnover to apply). For instance, a Potchefstroom-based service provider buying equipment and paying rent may benefit from early registration. An accountant will handle: Registration with SARS, Structuring pricing models for VAT, Filing bi-monthly VAT201 returns, Reconciling VAT on purchases and sales. Without expert help, VAT mismanagement is common. Incorrect claims, missed deadlines, or duplicate submissions can trigger SARS audits. Wave Breaking Accountants ensures all filings are clean and audit-proof. In Summary: Why Every Local Business Needs Financial Guidance Business owners in Potchefstroom wear many hats. But financial management is too important to approach casually. With expert support from firms like Wave Breaking Accountants, businesses gain: Better decision-making through accurate records, Reliable cash flow forecasts, Penalty-free tax compliance, Strategic VAT planning. More than just number-crunchers, accountants are partners in sustainable growth. They translate financial complexity into clear, actionable advice tailored to your business size, sector, and goals. • Raising the Bar: Lenmed MooiMed Recognised for Bariatric Excellence

In a significant step forward for local healthcare, Lenmed MooiMed Private Hospital  has been recognised as an accredited bariatric centre . This achievement, shared with Lenmed Ahmed Kathrada Private Hospital, places both institutions among a select group in South Africa meeting the highest standards in metabolic and weight management care . 💡 What is Bariatric Care and Why Should It Matter to the Community? Bariatric care focuses on the treatment of obesity and related metabolic health challenges. This can involve anything from lifestyle changes and nutritional support to surgical interventions for long-term health improvement. In communities like Potchefstroom, where lifestyle-related health issues are on the rise, having an accredited centre nearby offers reassurance that residents have access to world-class, multidisciplinary care  without needing to travel far. ✅ What Accreditation Means for Patients The accreditation signals more than just quality infrastructure, it highlights strict adherence to ethical and medical best practices . According to healthcare standards, an accredited centre must demonstrate: Comprehensive patient care, from assessment to follow-up Evidence-based and holistic treatment approaches A team of skilled professionals across various medical disciplines Ongoing training and clinical audits to ensure up-to-date practices In essence, patients at an accredited facility can expect safe, informed, and coordinated care  tailored to their specific health needs. 👥 A Closer Look at the Team Approach While accreditation is awarded to the institution, it’s the people behind it who drive the standard forward. Lenmed MooiMed’s bariatric offering includes input from a multidisciplinary team  ,typically involving surgeons, physicians, dietitians, psychologists, and physiotherapists, all contributing to a fully rounded support system. This means patients are not left to navigate their weight-loss or health journey alone; instead, they receive ongoing guidance from a network of professionals , each playing a key role in long-term success. 📍 Why This Milestone Is Worth Noting For Potchefstroom and surrounding areas, this kind of recognition is not just a feather in the hospital’s cap — it’s a win for local healthcare access . Until now, many residents might have needed to travel to major cities for this level of specialised care. This development puts the region on the map when it comes to: Addressing chronic metabolic conditions Offering safe, local solutions to weight-related health issues Providing a care model that considers both physical and emotional well-being 🗣 Final Thoughts From an outsider's perspective, the accreditation of Lenmed MooiMed Private Hospital as a bariatric centre is a strong indication that local healthcare continues to grow in both quality and reach . It’s a promising sign for patients who may have struggled to access consistent, ethical, and expert metabolic care in the past. As more institutions in smaller cities rise to meet global standards, the hope is that healthcare becomes more accessible, more personal, and more effective  for everyone. • Potch Dorp Rugby Matches Cancelled – Turns Out The Players Aren’t Waterproof

We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but the highly anticipated rugby fixtures for Saturday, 5 April 2025  have officially been called off  due to expected heavy rain across the North West province . According to forecasts, up to 100mm of rain  could soak the region this weekend – and while we know the players are tough, they’re definitely not waterproof  (and unfortunately, none of them are trained in water polo either 🏉➡️🤿). • SportStroom: Friends of Ferdies: Investing in Pupils, Building a Stronger School Community

In episode 21 of SportStroom, host Drikus  sits down with Charles  and Stefan  to dive into the story of Friends of Ferdies , a community-powered initiative supporting Hoërskool Ferdinand Postma Highschool through practical, meaningful action. But this isn’t just about helping a school… it’s about uplifting learners, building lasting relationships, and ensuring every pupil has the opportunity to succeed. What Is Friends of Ferdies? Friends of Ferdies is an independent platform that identifies current, real needs at the school and then helps meet them through targeted, achievable two-month projects. The initiative is deeply learner-focused. It’s about removing barriers, creating opportunities, and adding value where it matters most, whether through academics, sport, infrastructure, or emotional well-being. One Project at a Time, With Purpose What makes this project different is its clear and focused approach: They look at what is most important right now, and they strive to complete that project fully before moving on to the next. This ensures real, visible impact, not just ideas or promises. Whether it's a new training facility, a safer environment, or upgraded cultural spaces, every project is realistic, goal-driven, and fully completed before starting the next. Transparency & Feedback Supporters are always kept in the loop. They receive updates on how their donations are used, and how the outcomes benefit the learners and the school. This openness builds trust and has already led to more and more individuals and companies reaching out on their own, asking how they can get involved. Anyone Can Be a Friend of Ferdies You don’t have to be a former student to help. This is open to everyone, parents, community members, former staff, local business owners, and even people who simply drive past the school every day and want to make a difference. Whether you're Afrikaans or English, alumni or outsider, young or old, if you care about learners, you're welcome here. Support Comes in All Forms Some donors give financially. Others give time, expertise, or connections. Some even prefer to stay anonymous, quietly doing their part behind the scenes. Every bit helps. Current and Future Projects Friends of Ferdies is currently: Upgrading the athletics field Handling maintenance across the school grounds Expanding their network of marketing boards These aren’t enormous projects on their own, but together, they add up to something truly significant. The team is busy with: Expand the shooting range Complete their next major cultural project: a small open-air theatre with Greek-style pillars, built on the square. This stage will serve drama productions and school plays — and they hope to have it ready before the upcoming open days so that Grade 7 learners can enjoy a show during their visit. Upcoming Open Days Everyone is invited to come and see what’s happening at Hoërskool / Highschool Ferdinand Postma: English Open Day: 19 May 2025 Afrikaans Open Day: 21 May 2025 More information can be found on the school’s Facebook page.   The Future: Stronger Together The team is working on merchandise, supporter gear, and growing online communities so that people can connect and show their pride. WhatsApp groups, updates, and live events will continue building the movement. This is more than just a school fundraiser. It’s a foundation for long-term impact, a legacy of upliftment that benefits learners, families, and the entire Potchefstroom community. Friends of Ferdies  isn’t just about projects, it’s about people, purpose, and pride in the place we all call home. • Donation Drive Brings Big Smiles at PAWS – March 2025

Community Support Rolls In The tail-wagging excitement at PAWS this March was hard to miss. Thanks to generous hearts and busy hands, the shelter has been showered with support, donations and visits – and the animals are lapping up every moment. From food supplies to toolkits, it's been a month of practical love. Donations poured in from every corner – and the team at PAWS couldn’t be more grateful (or covered in more pet hair). Image Facebook: PAWS - Potch Animal Welfare Society SPAR Vyfhoek Steps Up Again SPAR Vyfhoek came through yet again, making sure that bellies – both big and small – stay full. The shelves are now well-stocked with pet food, treats and essentials, allowing the team to focus on what they do best: caring for the furballs who call PAWS home. The team at PAWS gave a heartfelt thank you to SPAR for their continued faith in the mission and their consistent, reliable support. It’s clear this is more than just a once-off gesture – it’s a genuine community partnership. Image Facebook: PAWS - Potch Animal Welfare Society Puk Kandelaar Students Share the Love The students from Puk Kandelaar not only brought donations, but also gave of their time, energy and affection – the ultimate treat for any shelter animal. The visit was packed with pats, walks, tummy rubs and the kind of love only a group of enthusiastic students can deliver. PAWS says the students had such a good time, they’re welcome back any day. And judging by the grins on both the human and canine faces, it’s safe to say this won't be the last visit. Image Facebook: PAWS - Potch Animal Welfare Society PCS Learners Bring the Goods Another big thank you went to Potchefstroom Central School (PCS) for their generous delivery. The learners rolled in with piles of food and supplies – and even a few brave cats came to inspect the goods and sneak in some cuddles. According to PAWS, the compassion and effort from these young ones was both heartwarming and highly appreciated. The learners clearly understood the assignment – arrive with love, leave with fur on your clothes. Image Facebook: PAWS - Potch Animal Welfare Society Ebs Hardware Fixes More Than Just Shelters And then came the cherry on top: a seriously generous donation from Ebs Hardware. The massive tool combo kit is already proving its worth. For a shelter where maintenance is a never-ending job, this gift was pure gold (or at least, orange and black in colour). No more fiddling with half-broken tools or borrowing from the neighbour – the PAWS team can now make repairs and improvements properly, and most importantly, safely. Image Facebook: PAWS - Potch Animal Welfare Society Open Invitation to Join the Fun PAWS is extending an open invitation to schools, businesses and organisations to come by and get involved. Whether it’s donating goods, walking dogs, playing with kittens or just sitting for a while with an old dog who needs a friend – every bit counts. As one volunteer put it, “You come here thinking you’re doing a good thing. You leave feeling like they’ve done something for you.” To Everyone Who Donated or Helped – Dankie, Dankie, Dankie! PAWS wrapped up their March campaign with one message: an overflowing, sincere thank you. For every person who gave, adopted, fostered, or simply shared the word – you’ve made a difference. And if you're still wondering whether to get involved? Just ask the wagging tails and purring balls of fluff – they’ll convince you in no time.

  • Keeping Your Pet Healthy: Regular Check-ups Matter

When it comes to looking after pets, a little effort goes a long way. The Potchefstroom Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) is urging pet owners to prioritise regular health check-ups to keep their furry companions in top shape. Why Regular Check-Ups Are Important Just like humans, pets need routine check-ups to stay healthy. Regular visits to the vet can help catch potential health issues before they become serious. Whether it’s a dental check-up, vaccinations, or microchipping, keeping up with pet healthcare is the key to a long and happy life for your furry friend. What PAWS Offers PAWS provides a range of essential pet healthcare services, including: Teeth Cleaning – Because bad breath shouldn’t be the reason your pet gets left outside. Sterilisation – Essential for controlling the pet population and reducing health risks like certain cancers. General Check-ups – A quick visit can save you from bigger problems down the line. Vaccinations – Nobody wants their pet catching nasty diseases that could have been prevented. Microchipping – A tiny chip could make the difference between losing a pet and getting them safely home. Sterilisation: More Than Just Population Control Sterilisation is about more than just preventing unexpected litters. It significantly reduces the risk of certain cancers and infections, helping pets live longer, healthier lives. PAWS is encouraging all pet owners to get their pets sterilised – it’s one of the best things you can do for them. How to Book an Appointment Pet owners can schedule a check-up or sterilisation appointment by calling 071 681 9462. Taking care of a pet is a lifelong commitment, and a little preventative care now can save a lot of trouble later. PAWS is here to help ensure that pets stay healthy, happy, and very much a part of the family.

  • PAWS: Meet Layla- Tiekie and Doepie – In Need of a Home

Finding a new best friend isn't about scrolling through fancy breeders or browsing pet stores. Sometimes, the perfect companion is already waiting—tail wagging, eyes hopeful—at a shelter like Potchefstroom Animal Welfare Society (PAWS). This time, we’re introducing three characters looking for their second shot at a forever home. Layla – The Gentle German Shorthaired Pointer First up, meet Layla—a five-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer with a heart as big as her floppy ears. Already sterilised, this girl is all about love and loyalty. She’s the kind of dog who’ll sit by your side no matter what, whether you’re binge-watching rugby or braaing with mates. She’s affectionate, well past the puppy chaos phase, and ready to settle down in a home that will appreciate her sweet nature. Tiekie – Small Dog, Big Personality On the other end of the size spectrum, we’ve got Tiekie, a two-year-old Chihuahua mix who had to be left behind when his family moved. Small but mighty, Tiekie may be pocket-sized, but don’t let that fool you—he’s got all the charm and confidence of a much bigger dog. If you’re looking for a little companion with a big presence, Tiekie might just be your guy. Doepie – The Fluffy Mystery Man Then there’s Doepie, a two-year-old Poodle mix who was found wandering the streets and never claimed. That means he’s still waiting for someone to give him the love and care he deserves. With his curly coat and easygoing vibe, Doepie is a classic underdog story in the making. He’s got the looks, the charm, and the potential to be the best snuggle buddy around. How to Adopt or Foster Adopting a dog isn’t just about giving them a home—it’s about changing both their life and yours. These three legends are available through PAWS, and if you’re keen to meet them (or foster while they wait for a permanent home), give 071 681 9264 a call. They’re ready when you are. 🐾

  • It Won’t Be Easy, But It Will Be Worth It: A Christian’s Journey

Life is full of challenges, and as Christians, we often find ourselves walking paths that are anything but smooth. From dealing with daily struggles to facing major life changes, it's clear that our journey of faith won't always be easy. Yet, despite the difficulties, we hold on to the hope and promise that it will be worth it. The Struggle is Real Let's be honest: life can be tough. Whether it’s balancing work, family, and personal time, dealing with financial stress, or navigating through relationships, each day presents its own set of challenges. As Christians, we aren’t exempt from these struggles. In fact, sometimes it feels like our faith adds an extra layer of complexity. We’re called to live differently, to love our enemies, and to turn the other cheek – none of which are easy tasks. Finding Strength in Faith In the face of these challenges, we have a source of strength that the world often overlooks: our faith in Jesus Christ. Philippians 4:13 tells us, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." This isn’t just a comforting verse to recite; it’s a powerful truth to live by. When the going gets tough, we can lean on Jesus for the strength we need to keep moving forward. Community and Support One of the beautiful aspects of being a Christian is the sense of community we share. We’re not meant to walk this journey alone. Galatians 6:2 encourages us to "carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ." Whether it’s through prayer groups, church services, or simply sharing a coffee with a fellow believer, we find support and encouragement from our Christian family. Walking in His Footsteps As we navigate our journey, it's essential to remember that Jesus Himself faced immense challenges. He experienced rejection, betrayal, and immense suffering, yet He persevered out of love for us. By following His example, we can find the courage to face our own trials. Jesus said in John 16:33, "In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." This assurance gives us hope and strength, knowing that if Jesus overcame the world, we too can overcome our struggles through Him. Daily Surrender and Trust Each day, we are invited to surrender our worries and burdens to God. It’s not about having all the answers or being perfect; it’s about trusting God’s plan and His timing. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us to "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." By placing our trust in God, we allow Him to work in our lives in ways we might never have imagined. This daily act of surrender brings peace and aligns our hearts with His will, making even the toughest journey a testament to His grace and love. The Bigger Picture When we’re in the thick of it, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. We might wonder why God allows us to face such hardships. But as Romans 8:28 reminds us, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." God has a plan, even if we can’t see it in the moment.  Our struggles are not in vain; they’re part of a greater purpose that we may only understand fully in hindsight or perhaps not until we reach eternity. The Reward The ultimate reward of our faith journey is, of course, eternal life with God. But even here on earth, we experience the fruits of our perseverance. James 1:12 says, "Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him." The peace, joy, and fulfillment we gain from staying true to our faith, even when it’s hard, are immense. Embracing the Journey So, how do we embrace this journey with all its ups and downs? By keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). We need to trust that He is with us every step of the way, guiding us, supporting us, and loving us unconditionally.  It   won’t be easy, but it will be worth it. This mantra can carry us through the hardest times, reminding us that our labor in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). As Christians, we are called to a higher purpose, and while the road may be rocky, the destination is glorious. Let’s encourage one another to stay the course, to fight the good fight, and to finish the race with our faith intact. In the end, the challenges we face will pale in comparison to the joy we find in Christ.

  • Spiritual Talk Ep. 28 – The Heart of Missions with Pastor Ruaan Viljoen

In this powerful episode of Spiritual Talk , Pieter Conradie welcomes Pastor Ruaan Viljoen from Refresh Church Potchefstroom to share an extraordinary journey of faith, outreach, and real-life impact across Africa. The conversation takes viewers deep into the villages of Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique, places where modern comforts are few, but the spiritual hunger is immense. Into the Heart of Africa Pastor Ruaan describes his travels not as mere missions, but as heartfelt partnerships with local pastors and forgotten communities. Starting in 2019, his mission work has grown to include multiple visits per year. In these rural areas, basic resources are scarce, roads are nearly impassable, and in many places, the sight of a white visitor is still unfamiliar. Yet, in these very settings, Pastor Ruaan has witnessed some of the most profound encounters with God’s presence. “It’s not a performance. It’s not about comfort. It’s about meeting people exactly where they are—and showing them they are seen and loved.” Church Under Trees, Worship Without Walls One of the most touching parts of the episode is hearing how churches in remote areas are often nothing more than tree branches tied together and covered with grass. And yet, the worship is alive. Ruaan speaks of congregations with no instruments and no sound systems, yet the Spirit is tangible. He recounts moments where people walked over 30 kilometers  just to attend a service. Children cry at the unfamiliar sight of a foreigner, while adults are overwhelmed with gratitude just to be seen, prayed for, and visited. “These pastors are the true heroes. They remain when we leave. They lead, they care, and they often do it in total obscurity.” Witchcraft, Miracles & Redemption While visiting these communities, Ruaan has seen firsthand the battle between light and darkness. In one Mozambique village, a revival broke out after witch doctors had a supernatural encounter during a crusade, eventually leading them to lay down their charms and give their lives to Jesus. Today, many of those villagers are part of the local church, walking long distances every Sunday to worship together. He also shares healing testimonies: a woman sick for months, unable to find help through doctors, was completely healed after a prayer of faith. Living Among Them: Faith in Action Ruaan doesn’t stay in hotels. He sleeps in tents, cooks his own food, and bathes with bucket water, choosing to fully immerse himself in the village life. He brings not only the Word, but also clothing, school supplies, and farming support. Through donations from the Potchefstroom community and his church, they've helped establish a school for orphans, paid teachers’ salaries, and fed entire villages recovering from drought. “When you go, you're not just going to give. You're also going to be changed.” Building the Builders A key focus of the mission is to empower pastors, not just to host crusades, but to equip local leaders who remain after the teams leave. Ruaan hosts multi-day leadership retreats where pastors receive in-depth teaching, prayer, and spiritual strengthening. The results? Churches are growing. Communities are transforming. And new leaders are rising. Ready to Join the Journey? For those stirred by this mission, Ruaan shares that the next big outreach is planned for July . He invites anyone interested to connect through Refresh Church’s Facebook page or reach out via The Go-To Guy’s platforms. “It’s raw, it’s real, and it will wreck your heart in the best way.” 🟡 To get involved or support the mission, visit: 📌 www.facebook.com/RefreshChurchPotch   Or contact The Go-To Guy for more details. 📆 Tune in next week for Episode 29 #TheGoToGuy   #potchefstroom   #potchgazette   #stroomstories   #spiritualtalk   #MissionsInAfrica   #FaithInAction

  • Sportstroom Episode 18: Shaping the Future of Rugby with Bert Moolman

In this episode of Sportstroom, host Drikus welcomes Bert Moolman, the passionate chairperson behind Luiperd Welpie Rugby. With a decade of experience in Leopards rugby and the NWU Rugby Institute, Bert brings insightful reflections on grassroots development, child-friendly rugby structures, and how young players begin their rugby journey. From Rugbybal to Welpie Rugby The conversation kicks off with a nostalgic look at kids’ introductory rugby programs. Today, it's often called "Welpie Rugby," a name inspired by the Luiperd (leopard) mascot and other animal-themed youth teams in South Africa. Welpie Rugby is essentially the first step into the sport, where young children between ages 5 and 8 are introduced to the basic principles of rugby in a fun, non-contact environment. The game is based on tag rugby, where players wear belts with velcro tags that opponents must pull off instead of tackling. Keeping Tiny Players Focused Managing a field full of young children who’d rather pick grass than catch passes requires creativity. Bert explains that success lies in keeping groups small, making activities playful, and involving parents directly. “You’ll be amazed how a child can go from tying a shoelace to chasing the ball within seconds, it’s part of the magic.”   Parents play a key role not just in moral support, but also in coaching, organizing, and logistics. The more parents involved, the smaller the coaching groups, and the better the individual experience for the kids. “We often rotate parent-coaches between groups, so they’re not just coaching their own child and can learn alongside them.” Structure, Support & a Shared Coaching Vision Thanks to the foundations laid by NWU's Department of Sport Science, the Welpie program follows a structured coaching guide developed by professionals like Dr. Ratiff Broodryk and Pieter van den Berg in the early 2000s. This resource offers coaches a blueprint of age-appropriate drills focused on: ✔️ Listening to instructions (e.g. whistle = freeze) ✔️ Handling and passing skills ✔️ Understanding space and movement ✔️ Early teamwork principles “If you can teach a six-year-old to react to a whistle and follow a basic rule, you’ve already built a foundation for their entire sporting life.” 80 Kids, One Field, Unlimited Energy In Potchefstroom, Bert and his team currently manage a group of around 80 players, 40 Grade R and 40 Grade 1 children. These practices can feel like chaos, but with structure, creativity, and well-planned drills, every session turns into an opportunity for development. “You can’t arrive at practice and decide what to do on the fly, you need a plan, structure, and the flexibility to adapt to where the children are on the day.” Bert also emphasized that Welpie Rugby aligns with the winter school sports season, typically running from March to June, with about 5–6 practice or match days per year. The Goal: Fun, Learning, and Confidence The objective at this level isn’t winning, it’s creating a positive, confidence-building experience for every child. Games are short (5–7 minutes per half), with teams rotating to ensure all players get equal time on the field. Even though it’s tag rugby, some children instinctively want contact, often diving for a tag or trying to tackle. Coaches gently reinforce the rules and redirect their energy. “There’s always that one kid who wants to tackle, so we make it a learning moment. Because next year, they’ll transition into contact rugby anyway.” Community Spirit and Camaraderie Events like the rugby day at O’Lea Park or the Orifal Day in Viljoenskroon bring together schools from across Potchefstroom and surrounding towns like Klerksdorp and Zanddrift. These aren’t formal competitions, but rather opportunities for kids to play, parents to cheer, and communities to connect. “Seeing 80 barefoot kids on a frosty field at 7am… it reminds you why you do this.” Welpie rugby is also a gateway to future stars, helping children learn teamwork, movement, discipline, and focus—skills that stick with them even if they never play contact rugby later in life.  Developing Potential at Grassroots Level One of the most rewarding parts of coaching, Bert says, is watching the development unfold. “Some of these kids couldn’t catch a ball in February… by June, they’re passing, running, and smiling like champions.” Even if some players only bloom later in high school or beyond, early exposure to core rugby skills builds confidence and lays the foundation for growth, both on and off the field. The Life Lessons Hidden in Tag Rugby In closing, Bert highlights the mental and emotional growth  that Welpie Rugby instills: Listening skills  through whistle drills Emotional resilience  when things don’t go as planned Team values and respect  for coaches, opponents, and themselves Fun under structure , with rules that mimic the game they might grow into one day “Even the shy kid who hides behind mom’s leg on Day 1, by the fifth week, he’s the one shouting ‘pass the ball!’” Sportstroom – Your Weekly Sports Fix This episode of Sportstroom, presented by The Go-To Guy and hosted by Drikus, brings yet another heartfelt and informative look at local sports development in Potchefstroom. Stay tuned for the next episode where we dive into the journey of another inspiring sports figure  shaping the future of local athletes! #Sportstroom   #WelpieRugby   #GrassrootsRugby   #YouthDevelopment   #TagRugby   #Luiperds   #TheGoToGuy   #CommunitySport   #Potchefstroom
