Foto: EB's Hardware Facebook blad "First things first" Christie Lauwrens, neef van Charl Lauwrens wat Kwende Electrical Supplies in Klerksdorp besit en EB’s gedurende COVID oorgekoop het, is deesdae aan die stuur van sake en die vriendelike gesig van EB’s Hardware. Christie het sy senior posisie, wat hy vir 14 jaar beklee het, verruil vir ‘n kortbroek en kleurvolle kouse. “Dit was ‘n impulsiewe besluit, maar ek het ‘n leap of faith gevat.” En nou, drie jaar later, is hulle steeds die grootste hardeware winkel in Potchefstroom met sekerlik die grootste verskeidenheid. Aan die begin was dit redelik ‘n uitdaging omrede daar so baie was wat gedoen moes word en aandag moes geniet. Jorina Lombard, closely associated with the young star, recalls, "It was immediately clear that this wasn’t just a passing phase. Sebastian had genuine talent." First Team Selection and then Ireland Beckons By Grade 6, he was already a part of his school's first team. And 2023? Well, that’s turning out to be Sebastian’s year. He not only made it to the school's 1st rugby team for a consecutive year but was also selected for the prestigious KOSH Invitational team. Discovering the Tawny Eagle The Tawny Eagle, scientifically known as Aquila rapax, is a formidable and striking diurnal raptor that holds a significant presence in both African and Asian skies.  These birds of prey belong to the family Accipitridae and are characterized by their heavily feathered legs, a trait that places them in the subfamily Aquilinae, often referred to as booted eagles.  Tawny eagles are renowned for their impressive dimensions, which have long captivated bird enthusiasts and nature enthusiasts alike. Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Size Matters: The Dimensions of a Tawny Eagle When it comes to these magnificent raptors, size is undoubtedly a defining feature. Tawny eagles exhibit a remarkable range of sizes, with variations depending on the individual and the region they inhabit.  On average, they measure between 58 to 75 centimeters in total length. The typical length for a Tawny Eagle hovers around 65 centimeters, making them relatively compact for a raptor of their stature.  Yet, what truly sets them apart is their expansive wingspan, which can stretch from 157 to 190 centimeters. This generous wingspan empowers them with the necessary aerodynamics to dominate the open skies of their arid habitats. Tawny Eagles: Guardians of the Savannas and Deserts They are also found in pockets of Asia, stretching from southeastern Iran to eastern Pakistan, India, and even sporadically in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.  The Tawny Eagle's ability to adapt to diverse environments is truly remarkable, as they reside in semideserts, deserts, steppes, savanna plains, and even areas where trees are not entirely absent. Despite their preference for arid regions, these eagles often roost and breed in the crowns of trees, underscoring the significance of these scattered pockets of greenery in their habitat. Their nests are often constructed with sticks, and they typically lay one to three eggs. A Highly Opportunistic Predator One of the most intriguing aspects of Tawny Eagles is their remarkable adaptability in terms of diet. They are highly opportunistic, and equally comfortable hunting live prey or scavenging on carrion. Vultures, too, rely on Tawny Eagles, just like they rely on the Bateleur Eagle to help locate carcasses, highlighting their pivotal role in the ecosystem. These eagles are known to prey on a wide range of animals, often hunting relatively large and diverse prey, showcasing their bold and active predatory nature.  Tawny Eagles can even steal food from other raptors, a behaviour that has earned them the Afrikaans name "Roofarend" or the "Robber Eagle". Their aggressiveness during these piratical attacks sets them apart from their otherwise more reserved disposition. Unfortunately, nest losses are quite common, with eggs and young often falling prey to various predators. Sometimes, even the young eaglets themselves don't make it, occasionally due to sibling rivalry.  The quality of their habitats and the availability of food play a crucial role in determining nesting success. Rainfall plays a vital role in their breeding success, leading to more two-egg clutches and less restricted breeding periods during wetter years. Nesting success varies across regions, with higher success in Zambia, where each pair typically produces one fledgling per nest. Although tawny eagles can live up to at least 16 years in the wild, extensive lifespan studies are yet to be conducted. A Precarious Existence: Threats and Conservation While these remarkable birds have long been revered, their populations are facing a host of challenges that put them at risk. Habitat loss due to logging and climate change, persecution through poisoning, and other anthropogenic threats such as contact with man-made objects are driving the once numerous Tawny Eagles perilously close to the brink of extinction.  The Tawny Eagle's conservation status is a cause for concern. Currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, their population has experienced a significant decline. In Africa, their numbers have dwindled, and in India, they are facing strong declines, with sightings in some regions reduced by up to half. In the face of these challenges, the conservation of Tawny Eagles outside protected areas becomes of utmost importance. These remarkable birds, with their remarkable adaptability and crucial role in their ecosystems, deserve our attention and efforts for their protection. Discovering the Flamingos Flamingos, these magnificent avian wonders, have long captured the hearts and imaginations of nature enthusiasts and bird lovers around the world. These charismatic wading birds belong to the family Phoenicopteridae, and they represent the sole extant family in the order Phoenicopteriformes.  With their stunning pink plumage and distinctive characteristics, flamingos have enamoured people across the globe. Let's embark on a journey to understand their global distribution, etymology, taxonomy, and intriguing behaviours. Etymology: Unveiling the Origins The name "flamingo" has an intriguing etymology. It harks back to the Portuguese or Spanish word "flamengo", which means "flame-colored". This fiery hue resonates with the striking shades of pink that adorn these birds plumage.  Additionally, the word might have been influenced by the Spanish ethnonym "flamenco," signifying "Fleming" or "Flemish". Their genus name, Phoenicopterus, is derived from the Greek words "phoinikopteros", meaning "crimson" or "red-feathered."  Image: Kyle Grobler Photography Taxonomy and Systematics: Discovering Flamingos' Close Relatives Flamingos have perplexed scientists in the past regarding their closest relatives within the avian world. Traditionally, they were thought to be related to the long-legged Ciconiiformes, the order that includes Storks and Herons.  Alternatively, Ibises and Spoonbills from the Threskiornithidae family were considered their close kin. However, genetic studies and comprehensive research have provided new insights. A 2014 study revealed that Flamingos and Grebes do not fall under the waterfowl category but rather belong to the group called Columbea.  This group includes Doves, Sandgrouse, and Mesites. Recent molecular and morphological studies have emphasized a strong relationship between Flamingos and Grebes, further deepening our understanding of these elegant birds' place in the avian world. Description: Unraveling the Unique Traits Flamingos are well-known for their iconic behaviour of standing on one leg. While the exact reason for this stance remains a subject of debate, two primary theories have emerged. Some believe it helps conserve body heat, as flamingos often wade in cold waters.  Others suggest it minimizes energy expenditure for standing and balancing on one leg. Recent studies have even shown that living Flamingos can hold the one-legged pose without any muscle activity, highlighting the efficiency of this behaviour.  In addition to one-legged balancing, Flamingos are known to stir up food from the mud by stamping their webbed feet. These birds are also proficient fliers, though those in captivity may require wing clipping to prevent escapes. While young flamingos hatch with greyish-red plumage, adults display a spectrum ranging from light pink to bright red. This stunning coloration results from the consumption of aqueous bacteria and beta-carotene from their diet.  In essence, a well-fed Flamingo showcases a more vibrant hue, making it a desirable mate. Conversely, white or pale plumage may indicate poor health or malnourishment. Notably, captive flamingos may turn pale pink if they do not receive sufficient carotene in their diet. Global Distribution: The Six Species of Flamingos Flamingos are distributed across the globe, with four species inhabiting the Americas, including the Caribbean, and two species native to Afro-Eurasia. The Greater Flamingo, the tallest of the six species, is found in parts of Africa, Asia, and Europe also known as the most wide spread Flamingo.  It stands at about 118 centimeters with a weight of up to 3.5 kilgrams. In contrast, the Lesser Flamingo, the smallest of the species, has a height of about 79 centimeters and weighs 2.5 kilograms. Their wingspan can range from 94 centimeters to 150 centimeters, depending on the species. They are social birds, forming colonies that serve various purposes, such as avoiding predators, maximizing food intake, and using nesting sites efficiently.  The vibrant, synchronized displays of Flamingos, which include stretching their necks, head-flagging, and wing flapping, help in the formation of pair bonds and stimulate synchronous nesting. While Flamingos are strong pair bonders, they may change mates in larger colonies when more options are available. The chicks are raised with care and fed by both parents with specialized crop milk. Their journey from hatchlings to full-grown flamingos is nothing short of a miracle. Interestingly, Flamingo nests are made of mud, and both parents share the responsibility of incubation and chick-rearing.
