My roots trace back to the mesmerising waters of Betty's Bay, nestled within the diverse ecosystems of South Africa. "Why the name Xenopus?", you might wonder. Well, "Xenos" translates to "strange" and "pous" means "foot" in Greek. This moniker aptly describes my distinctive clawed feet that set me apart in the amphibian realm. Oh, and speaking of relatives, while I have 17 cousins worldwide, only four of us have the honour of calling Southern Africa home. What Sets Me Apart? Now, I'm not your everyday amphibian. My kind, you see, are wholly aquatic; we spend our entire lives immersed in water, only gracing the land when we embark on migrations in search of new freshwater territories. We've evolved beautifully to suit our watery domain: our bodies are streamlined for fluid movement, and our hind legs? Oh, they pack quite the powerful push! While we might lack what some call a tympanum (that's an external ear drum to most), a tongue, and movable eyelids — features you'd find handy above the water surface — under the waves, they're not of much use. Instead, we've got something truly special: a well-developed lateral line system. Much like our fishy neighbours, this system equips us with the ability to detect even the slightest vibrations and movements underwater. In a pivotal turn of events, court documents have unveiled that Oscar Pistorius, the famed double-amputee Olympic and Paralympic runner, was wrongly denied parole and was, in fact, eligible for it in March. The background to this significant revelation revolves around Pistorius's incarceration following his conviction for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. In a case that riveted the world, Pistorius fatally shot Steenkamp through the bathroom door of his residence on Valentine’s Day in 2013. The athlete has always maintained that he mistook her for an intruder. This case saw multiple twists and turns, with appeals and sentence revisions, eventually leading to Pistorius receiving a 13-year sentence in 2017 Recent Developments However, the recent documents suggested a miscalculation concerning when Pistorius began his sentence. According to South African law, offenders with sentences exceeding two years must serve at least half of their term to qualify for parole. Pistorius's appeal asserts that he met this criterion by March 31, 2023. Contrarily, a parole board hearing in March ruled that he wouldn't be eligible until August next year. Critical Oversight A critical oversight, as highlighted by the documents, pertains to when Pistorius’s murder sentence officially started. The Supreme Court of Appeal, in what is now being termed an "obvious mistake," ruled that his sentence began on November 24, 2017, instead of the actual start in July 2016. This discrepancy left out 16 months where Pistorius was incarcerated. Although this court error seems evident, the Supreme Court of Appeal has not rectified it officially. Thus, the parole board, lacking a revised judgment, had no choice but to deem Pistorius ineligible for parole in March. These herds, sometimes hundreds strong, provide safety, particularly for their vulnerable members like the youngsters. Within this community lies a strict hierarchy, where bulls engage in fierce battles for dominance and mating rights, running into each other with their massive bosses and sharp edged horns. Females however especially the older ones are the more important members of the herds as they are the ones with the knowledge, staying with the same herd and their offspring as what they were born into. When engaging with a herd of Cape Buffalo one is immediately facinated by the way they care as a whole about the females, this is especially noticed when finding them early morning, still waking up, where females and their calves are situated in the middle of the sleepy herd and protected by some fierce big bulls facing outwards on the outskirts of the sleeping herd, acting as protection against any danger that might be lerking in the bush. The devastating rinderpest epidemic of the 1890s, introduced by Italian cattle, decimated millions and even impacted human populations. Yet, through resilience and global efforts, rinderpest was eradicated. It killed nearly 5.2 million cattle south of the Zambezi River. The epidemic was so bad that it wiped out a third of the Ethiopian population and two thirds of the Maasai people in Tanzania. But their battles persist. The specter of bovine tuberculosis (TB) looms large. Originating from interactions with cattle in the '90s, this contagious disease now threatens not just the buffalo but also their predators. As there's no cure, infected individuals often face a tragic end which ends in death. The Myth and Reality of Danger Contrary to their serene grazing scenes, Cape Buffalos are formidable adversaries. Their unpredictability, especially when wounded, has led them to account for more human fatalities than almost any other African animal. Yet, as a seasoned field guide, I can attest to their harmonious nature. Respect their space, and they exhibit nothing but tranquillity. They are adept swimmers, skilled fighters, and occasionally even lion slayers. • Their imposing stature, ranging from 600 - 800 kg, is paired with a surprisingly smooth tongue. • Despite their current grandeur, their ancestors were much smaller and ventured into Africa around 5-6 million years ago. • Life for them spans about 23 years, with their rank within herds determined by their combat skills. • They are not territorial because they are bulk grazers and need to find suitable grazing and water on an ongoing basis. • The African buffalo made its way into the Big 5 ranking because of their size, moody behaviour and their ability to charge with no warning, the African Buffalo has been said to be one of the most dangerous animals to hunt on foot.
