Volgende aan die beurt is die Adjunkhoof van Abraham Kriel Kinderhuis. Op 29-jarige ouderdom is sy omtrent deur ‘n vuurdoop toe sy aangestel en by Huis Moria geplaas is om na 50 seuns om te sien. Gelukkig het sy haar staal gewys en 33 jaar later is Annelien Yzelle steeds by Abraham Kriel Kinderhuis.  Foto: Annelien Yzelle, Adjunkhoof van Abraham Kriel Kinderhuis Rol en verantwoordelikhede as Adjunkhoof Haar rol as Adjunkhoof sluit baie verantwoordelikheid “en baie admin” in. Die huis se kinderversorgers rapporteer aan haar en sy is ook verantwoordelik vir die dissipline van die kinders en alles wat daarmee gepaard gaan. Buite-organisasies soos skole en kerke se omsendbriewe, vrywaringsvorms en alles tussen-in word deur Annelien en Alec ingevul en geteken. Die kinderversorgers en ander personeel se doel is om vir die kinders minstens een keer ‘n dag iets te gee waarna hulle kan uitsien - soms in die vorm van ‘n verrassing of iets waarvan hul ‘n week lank reeds weet. 'n Dag in die lewe van... Foto (Facebook): NACCW Alhoewel sy haar beplanning opstel volgens roosters, word die daaglikse take hanteer soos dit op die tafel beland. Op die oomblik is hulle kinderversorgers besig met opleiding by die National Association of Child Care Workers (NACCW). Die avontuur begin Annelien se reis by Abraham Kriel het in 1991 begin toe sy as 29-jarige werk begin soek het, na haar kinders al 'n paar jaar oud was. Vriende het voorgestel dat sy aansoek doen by die kinderhuis, maar sy het vierkantig teen dié idee geskop, omdat “ek nie na ander mense se kinders kyk nie”, vertel sy laggend. Na ‘n paar mislukte aansoeke by ander besighede en instansies, was daar weer ‘n pos by Abraham Kriel beskikbaar en sy het ingegee en aansoek gedoen. Wat meer soos ‘n kruisverhoor gevoel het, was haar onderhoud met die hele adviesraad en sy vertel hoe sy lekker klei getrap het tydens die ondervraging; maar die huis was [moontlik] desperaat en die bestuur het sommer dieselfde dag vir haar die pos aangebied. "Dis al hoe jy leer swem" Sy was behoorlik in die diepkant gegooi en die volgende dag was daar alreeds ‘n atletiek byeenkoms in Langlaagte. Sy is saam met al die kinders op die bus op pad na die byeenkoms en na die terugkoms, is Annelien ingelig dat die senior seuns by Huis Moria haar verantwoordelikheid sou wees - 50 van hulle. Vroeër jare was daar verskillende sirenes vir verskillende ‘aankondigings’ by die kinderhuis, onderandere sirenes vir wanneer die kinders moes opstaan, wanneer ontbyt gereed is en wanneer hulle medikasie moet gaan afhaal. Aan die begin het Annelien na elke sirene by die trappe afgehardloop het om te vra ‘Wat gebeur nou?’. Maar mettertyd het sy meer selfvertroud geraak met die sisteme en roetines van die kinderhuis en hoe meer het sy besef dat die Here haar by Huis Moria spesifiek geplaas het. Natuurlik was daar ook báie trane en baie maal het sy gedreig om sommer 24 uur kennis te gee; gelukkig was haar man die stem van rede, haar klankbord en nadat sy so paar voor- en nadele neergeskryf het, is haar lont geblus. Grootste uitdagings Om meer as 230 kinders en hul afsonderlike probleme te hanteer en op te los, is die grootste uitdaging vir Annelien. Dit is soms baie oorweldigend as gevolg van die [moeilike] kind. Dit is ook uitdagend om objektief na ‘n situasie te kyk en nié emosioneel betrokke te raak nie, want die personeel weet dat dit wat die kind sopas gedoen het, nie ooreenstem met hul normale gedrag nie, maar eerder as gevolg van eksterne faktore. Kinderversorgers oor die algemeen het partymaal baie hoë verwagtinge van die kinders wat nuut ingeneem is; hulle vergeet soms dat hierdie kinders nie eers basiese take kan uitvoer nie. Annelien bevraagteken haarself nou nog en kasty haarself wanneer sy voel sy het nie reg teenoor ‘n kind opgetree nie; maar sy is terselfdetyd man genoeg om te wéét wanneer sy verkeerd opgetree het en vra persoonlik om verskoning - op die ou end van die dag is sy ook net mens.  Dit voel ook vir haar of sy soms te hard teenoor die kinders optree en noem dat dit moeilik is om nie jou emosies die oorhand te gee in die hitte van die oomblik nie, veral wanneer jy ‘n rowwe dag agter die rug het.  Hulpbronne en befondsing Alhoewel die terrein netjies gehou word en in ‘n goeie toestand is, kan ‘n mens sien daar is ‘n behoefte aan befondsing om volhoubare onderhoud te handhaaf. Huis Sameul en Huis Immanuel is twee van die huise wat oorgedoen móét word, maar die nodige fondse is eenvoudig nie beskikbaar nie. “Jy het geld nodig om te doen wat jy moet doen”, het Annelien genoem.  Eenvoudige uitstappies is finansieel uitdagend vir die kinderhuis in geheel. Annelien vertel van een voorval waar daar ‘n tweeling na haar toe gekom het om te vra of hulle The Lion King 2 in die fliek kan gaan kyk, maar sy moes vir hulle sê dat dit nie moontlik is nie; die kaartjies was te duur (vir daardie tyd) en hulle het nie afslag gekry nie - doen steeds nie. Sy het een van haar kollegas gevra om ‘n beroep op die gemeenskap te doen en om hulp te vra; binne ‘n dag kon hulle vir die hele kinderhuis se inwoners elkeen ‘n fliekkaartjie kry en die gemeenskap het ook gehelp met vervoer. As kinderhuis vra hul nie sommer nie, maar wanneer hul wel vra, oortref die Potchefstroom gemeenskap hulle verwagtinge keer op keer. Foto: Een van die sitkamers het juis The Lion King as tema, maar ook hier kort onderhoud Kinders en konflik Om konflik tussen kinders te hanteer is baie makliker as tussen personeel; kinders sien makliker ‘n situasie in. Dit is ook baie eenvoudiger om konflik tussen die seuns op te los - hulle skud wel mekaar se hande met ‘n dik mond, maar ‘n uur later het hulle reeds van die rusie vergeet. Die dogters aan die anderhand is meer van ‘n uitdaging, omdat die skoner geslag eerder wrokke koester as om van die situasie te vergeet of die een wat haar te na gekom het, te vergewe. “Jy kry altyd mense wat nie bereid is om die vinger na hulself te wys nie.” Annelien vertel dat dit belangrik is om een vir een met die dogters te praat en nie ‘n hele groepie aan te spreek nie, want dan is daar ‘n oor-en-weer vinger wysery.  Emosionele en fisiese behoeftes Hulle verseker dat daar aan die kinders se behoeftes voorsien word deur dit eenvoudig net te doen. Tydens hul eie ‘studies’ by die NACCW, het Annelien en Christie Saayman, Hoof van Abraham Kriel, baie geleer rakende basiese opvoeding asook beleide in en rondom kinderhuise spesifiek. Die personeel doen gereeld kursusse om op datum te bly van die nuutste bevindinge en metodes rakende kindersorg. Die kinderversorgers se pligstate word ook volgens die NACCW se riglyne opgetrek en Abraham Kriel het aftiklysies wat hul aan die kinderversorgers voorsien. Die bestuur is baie betrokke en besoek die verskillende afdelings en huise op ‘n gereelde basis. Hulle (die bestuur) vra en vereis baie van hul versorgers, maar Abraham Kriel handhaaf ‘n baie hoë standaard waarna elke personeellid streef.  Abraham Kriel en die Potchefstroom gemeenskap Vanaf graad 11 kan die kinders kom vra of hulle ‘n naweekwerk of ‘n werkie tydens vakansies mag kry - sommiges kry dan selfs ‘n werksaanbod na skool. Alhoewel kelner posisies moeilik is as gevolg van lang ure en vervoer, doen die personeel steeds alles in hul vermoë om dit te verwesenlik as hul sien dat dit regtig is wat die inwoner wil doen. Round Table en die Rotary Klub het gereelde skoonmaak sessies in die dorp waarby hul dan Abraham Kriel se kinders betrek. Intern het die kinderhuis vakansieprogramme vir dié kinders wat nie huis toe gaan nie; hulle bak dan koekies en gaan deel die pakkies uit by die ouetehuise of hulle maak hondekoekies en gaan lewer dit af by PAWS. Die belangrikheid van hierdie inisiatiewe is om die kinders te leer dat hulle nie heeltyd nét kry nie, maar ook moet gee.   'n Lyn in die sand Daar is wel perke gestel wanneer dit by die gemeenskap en die kinders kom. Annelien vertel dat hulle een jaar die uitsondering gemaak het om die publiek toegang tot die kinders en perseel gegee het, terwyl hul Kersgeskenke uitdeel en toe Annelien die aanmerkings hoor, het sy besluit nie weer nie. Alhoewel die publiek se intensies goed is, is die personeel se belange by dié van hul kinders. Altyd. Eerste. Dit is ‘n vernedering vir die kinders om soos goudvissies dopgehou te word en die personeel by Abraham Kriel wil graag hê die kinders moet trots wees op wie hulle is, “ons kinders het baie om voor dankbaar te wees.” Wanneer lede van die gemeenskap op die perseel is of wanneer hul met die kinders te doen kry, is hulle altyd verbaas om te sien hoe gelukkig die kinders is en hoe lekker hulle lag en speel - die publiek het ‘n groot wanpersepsie oor kinderhuis kinders en hoe hulle houdings en uitkyk op die lewe ‘behoort’ te wees. Daar was op ‘n kol Duitse vrywilligers by die kinderhuis en hulle het twee van die dogtershuise na Skuinsdrift in Groot Marico na ‘n plaasgemeenskap geneem, net sodat hulle so bietjie perspektief kon kry oor hoe swaar dit werklik met ander mense gaan. Daar is wel vrywilligers wat die kinders met hul huiswerk en studies help, maar daar is net drie van hulle en nie een is by die senior kinders nie. Die ander uitdaging rakende vrywilligers is dat die seniors op die oomblik gedurende die aand studeer as gevolg van die hoërskole wat later uitkom (studietyd is van 14h00 - 15h00 in die middae). Die voormalige skoolhoof van Potchefstroom Sentraal, Me. Daphne van Rensburg, het na haar aftrede as vrywilliger kom uithelp en daar is ook twee ouer dames wat hul tyd afstaan om die kinders te help - hulle doen dit uit en uit ten voordeel van die kinders.  Raak betrokke Foto (Facebook): AquaZone het swemlesse kom aanbied “Raak verseker betrokke, maar doen dit vir die regte redes. Doen dit met die intensie om 'n kind te help”, is Annelien se advies vir enigiemand wat as vrywilliger wil dien. Vrywilligers het ook die geleentheid en voorreg om te sien hoe die kinders groei - akademies en andersins. Sy sal dit ook aanraai om by ‘n kinderhuis te werk; dit is veeleisend, maar vervullend. Vir Annelien is dit die lekkerste om ‘n kind te sien terugkom. ‘n Voorbeeld: kinders wat as gevolg van wangedrag nie meer in die kinderhuis kan bly nie, ruk hul lewens reg en besef hoe gelukkig hulle werklik by die kinderhuis was en wil dan dié openbaring met huidige inwoners kom deel, asook die personeel bedank. Diegene wat terugkom, floreer in hul huidige omstandighede omdat die kinderhuis in geheel hul met die nodige vaardighede toegerus het om bo hul omstandighede uit te styg en ‘n sukses van hulself te maak.  'n Harde, duidelike boodskap aan die publiek "Hierdie is normale kinders, daar is niks fout met hulle nie." ‘n Bitter pil om te sluk, is die feit dat in die meeste gevalle word die kinders verwyder uit die omstandighede of situasie en nie die oortreder nie - volwassenes is die rede dat kinders in die kinderhuis is of hier eindig. Onkunde in die samelewing lei tot verdere ‘slegte’ gedrag teenoor kinders in die kinderhuis, veral onder skoolkinders. Daar is wel gevalle waar hul skole nooi om te sien hoe die lewe in die kinderhuis is en almal is gewoonlik verbaas oor hoe dit lyk en hoe goed hul funksioneer.  Elke personeellid by die kinderhuis speel ‘n integrale rol in die bestuur, onderhoud en vooruitgang van hierdie instansie en saam met Christie Saayman en die res van die personeel, is Annelien Yzelle nog lánk nie klaar met Abraham Kriel nie.
