- Committee Oversight Visit Highlights Urgent Preservation Needs at Potchefstroom Heritage Sites
The Sport, Arts and Culture Portfolio Committee of the JB Marks Local Municipality, led by Chairperson Cllr. Ivan Clarde Derbyshire , undertook an important oversight visit to several key heritage sites in Potchefstroom this week. The visit formed part of the municipality’s continued commitment to heritage conservation and cultural infrastructure oversight, ensuring that the region’s historical assets are preserved for future generations. Image: JB Marks Scope of the Inspection Committee members Ald. Abraham Albertus Le Roux and Cllr. Matthys Jacobus Van Tonder joined the Chairperson in visiting a series of heritage and museum properties, including: Main Museum Art Galleries Museum Archives Goetz-Fleischack House Old Museum Old Electrical Building Old Station Municipal Property Totius House President Pretorius House These locations, all of significant historical and cultural value, form the backbone of Potchefstroom’s heritage landscape and are central to understanding the city’s role in South African history. Findings: Challenges to Heritage Preservation The oversight revealed a number of pressing challenges affecting the structural integrity and preservation of these heritage sites. Among the most serious issues identified were: Widespread roof leaks , which threaten both the buildings and the artifacts housed within. General lack of routine maintenance , including deteriorating paintwork, cracked walls, and wood decay. Incidents of break-ins and theft , exposing weaknesses in security measures. Committee members expressed concern that without urgent intervention, continued neglect could lead to irreversible damage to some of the city’s most treasured historical landmarks. Signs of Progress and Commitment Despite the concerns, the committee also noted encouraging signs of progress and dedication among staff and management overseeing the museums and heritage facilities. Observations included: Plans in progress to expand existing historical collections and develop new exhibitions. Active exhibitions currently on display, with future showcases already planned. Evidence of professional artifact care , with several items well-preserved despite environmental challenges. Maintenance strategies being developed to address roof leaks, wall cracks, and wood repairs. Initiatives to promote heritage tourism , including revamping signage, improving accessibility, and enhancing public engagement. The committee commended the ongoing efforts of cultural staff and heritage curators who continue to protect and promote the city’s history despite limited resources. Balancing Urgency and Opportunity The oversight visit presented a balanced view , recognizing both the urgency of addressing infrastructure decay and the municipality’s proactive steps toward long-term sustainability. Chairperson Cllr. Derbyshire emphasised the dual responsibility of preserving heritage while ensuring that museums remain vibrant, educational spaces accessible to the public. The committee’s findings will inform further recommendations on budget allocations, security improvements, and maintenance programs aimed at preventing further degradation. Broader Significance Potchefstroom’s heritage sites are not only local assets but also part of a broader narrative that contributes to the cultural identity of the North West Province. Preserving these spaces safeguards a tangible link to the past, fostering civic pride and educational value for residents and visitors alike. The visit reinforced the importance of ongoing collaboration between government departments, cultural institutions, and the community to ensure that the city’s heritage infrastructure remains protected, relevant, and accessible. Image: JB Marks Wrap-Up The Sport, Arts and Culture Portfolio Committee’s oversight visit served as both a reality check and a reaffirmation of commitment. While serious infrastructure and security concerns persist across Potchefstroom’s heritage network, the committee acknowledged the dedication of museum staff and the progress made toward restoration and revitalisation. Preserving the city’s cultural history will require sustained investment, coordinated management, and community support, ensuring that these landmarks continue to tell Potchefstroom’s story for generations to come. #TheGoToGuy #potchefstroom #HeritagePreservation #PotchefstroomMuseums #JbMarksCulture #ArtsAndCulture #CulturalHeritage 🏛️📚🕰️🔧

- Nations Unite in Potchefstroom: Soldiers Conquer Obstacle and Endurance Fronts at MILCOMP 2025
Potchefstroom once again became the stage for extraordinary military excellence as the Chief of the South African National Defence Force’s Military Skills Competition (MILCOMP) 2025 entered its decisive final days. Soldiers from South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Zambia, and Zimbabwe pushed the limits of endurance, strength, and unity through two of the most demanding events of the week, the Land Obstacle Course and the 8km Combat Run . These consecutive challenges tested every element of soldiering skill, from agility and coordination to stamina, focus, and the unyielding will to persevere under pressure. The Land Obstacle Course: Precision Meets Power On Friday, 03 October 2025 , under the North West’s unforgiving spring sun, the Land Obstacle Course at the Kopanelo Military Sports Club , Army Support Base Potchefstroom, transformed into an arena of pure determination. National flags waved proudly above the dust-filled air as competitors from all seven nations charged head-to-head through the 500-metre battlefield of obstacles built to the rigorous standards of the Interallied Confederation of Reserve Officers (CIOR) competition format. The course included a brutal series of military-standard challenges: the Rope Ladder, Double Beam, Hurdles, Low Crawl, Elephant Steps, Swedish Rack, Assault Wall with Rope, Irish Table, Bear Pit, Chicken Ladder, Zigzag Balance Beams , and the final sequence of Assault Walls . Each element demanded total physical control and mental discipline. Spectators and fellow competitors alike cheered as soldiers conquered each barrier with grit and camaraderie, often sharing words of encouragement across national lines. The event concluded with a spirited group photo, a symbolic display of international unity forged through shared adversity and respect . As the day ended, attention turned toward the ultimate test , the Combat Run , where stamina and teamwork would decide the final standings of the competition. The 8km Combat Run: The Final Test of Endurance Saturday, 04 October 2025 , dawned crisp and clear over the 4 Artillery Regiment training grounds near Potchefstroom. Soldiers lined up for the 8km Combat Run , the final and most grueling event of MILCOMP 2025. Each competitor stood ready, representing their nation’s pride and their unit’s discipline. The atmosphere crackled with anticipation as motorcyclists from the South African Army Specialised Infantry Capability (SAASIC) guided the runners across the rugged veld terrain. The course, a mixture of flat plains, dry riverbeds, and hill climbs, demanded not only physical endurance but tactical awareness under strain. With boots striking rhythmically against the North West soil, the international competitors pressed forward, their faces marked by determination and exhaustion in equal measure. What unfolded was not merely a race against time but a shared journey of resilience, mutual respect, and solidarity in service . When the dust settled, Botswana’s team claimed the day’s honours, sweeping gold, silver, and bronze positions through the outstanding performances of Private Ntshabang, Corporal Waniwa, and Lance Corporal Habangana . The results reflected both individual dedication and the rigorous training that defines every participant in this multinational military showcase. Unity Through Strength and Shared Purpose The closing hours of the competition carried a tone of pride and reflection. Across languages and uniforms, soldiers exchanged congratulations, laughter, and firm handshakes. The events had tested their strength, but also revealed the deeper purpose of MILCOMP, to promote international cooperation, friendship, and excellence in the military profession . “This competition is about more than victory,” said one official. “It’s about strengthening the bonds between nations and building trust through skill, integrity, and teamwork.” The Prize Giving Ceremony , held later in the afternoon, celebrated every competitor’s contribution to the spirit of the event. For the soldiers of all seven nations, Potchefstroom had once again proven itself not only as a training ground but as a home of international military solidarity. Wrap-Up The Chief of the South African National Defence Force’s Military Skills Competition 2025 concluded with more than medals and accolades, it ended with lasting friendships and renewed professional respect among allies. Through grit, unity, and discipline, the participants showcased the best of military readiness and humanity’s shared strength under challenge. - Potch, Let's Help: Family Loses Everything in Devastating Ikageng House Fire
A family has been left with nothing after their home in Ikageng was completely destroyed by fire late on Friday night. The blaze, which occurred on 3 October , forced the family to escape through a window moments before the structure was engulfed in flames. The incident has prompted a compassionate local response as friends, colleagues, and community members rally to help them rebuild their lives. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations The Night of the Fire According to reports, Elias Hlaoli , his wife, and their two children were asleep when Elias woke up around 22:45 to the smell of smoke. He quickly discovered flames spreading through the kitchen and dining area. Acting swiftly, the family managed to escape through a bedroom window just before the fire consumed the entire house by 22:58 . Though no injuries were reported, the family lost all their belongings, including furniture, clothes, appliances, and personal documents. A Community Responds In the aftermath of the tragedy, Cathy Schoonwinel , Elias’s colleague of six years and supervisor at La Rose Ridge , has taken the lead in organising community assistance. She has been collecting donations to help the family secure temporary shelter and basic necessities. “The family has to start completely from scratch,” Cathy said. “We’re asking anyone who can help to donate building materials such as corrugated iron sheets and poles for a temporary structure, as well as household essentials like clothing, bedding, furniture, cutlery, and food.” Cathy added that donations can be dropped off at La Rose Ridge in Oudeburg Street , or she can be contacted directly at 076 392 5366 for coordination. Image: Potchefstroom First Responders Rebuilding From the Ashes For Elias and his family, the road ahead will be difficult. With their home reduced to ashes, community support will be essential in helping them regain stability. The family’s immediate needs include shelter, warm clothing, and food, but long-term recovery will also depend on sustained support as they work toward rebuilding their lives. Residents of Potchefstroom are encouraged to come together in the spirit of compassion and solidarity, a defining feature of this close-knit community. Wrap-Up The heartbreaking loss suffered by the Hlaoli family has touched the hearts of many in Potchefstroom. What began as a night of terror has evolved into a testament of community unity, as neighbors and strangers alike mobilize to help those in need. In moments like these, Potchefstroom once again shows its strength not through its structures, but through its people, ordinary citizens choosing empathy over indifference. #TheGoToGuy #PotchLetsHelp #IkagengFire #CommunitySupport #RebuildHope #PotchefstroomCares 🔥🏚️🤝💛

- Proteas Women’s World Cup: A Rough Start, Then Redemption
The Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 has already delivered sharp contrasts for South Africa . In their opening fixture, the Proteas were routed by a ruthless England side, only to bounce back memorably in match two with a dominant victory over New Zealand. Here’s how those two games unfolded and what they tell us. Image: Match against England Match 1: England Crush the Proteas by 10 Wickets South Africa’s campaign began on a dismal note in Guwahati , where England sealed a 10-wicket win within just 14.1 overs after bowling the Proteas out for 69 runs in only 20.4 overs. After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, South Africa’s top order crumbled early. Linsey Smith (3/7), Nat Sciver-Brunt (2/5), and Sophie Ecclestone (2/19) tore through the lineup, leaving the side reeling at 38/6 . Only Sinalo Jafta showed some fight with a 22-run knock, but the total was too small to defend. England’s openers, Tammy Beaumont and Amy Jones , cruised to victory without losing a wicket, reaching the target in the 14th over. It was a tough opener for the Proteas, a harsh reminder of the standard required on the global stage. Image: Match against England Match 2: South Africa Bounce Back – Win by 6 Wickets vs New Zealand A few days later in Indore , South Africa rewrote the script, and how! The Proteas produced a commanding six-wicket victory over New Zealand , chasing down 231 runs in just 40.5 overs . The standout performer was Tazmin Brits , who smashed a stunning 101 off 89 balls , her fifth ODI century of 2025 and first at a World Cup. Her innings, decorated with 15 fours and a six, was pure class , aggressive when needed, yet calm under pressure. Image: Match against New Zealand Together with Sune Luus (81 off 114) *, Brits built a 159-run second-wicket stand , the highest partnership by South Africa in Women’s World Cup history. By the time she walked off the field, the team was within touching distance of victory, which they sealed with 9.5 overs to spare. On the bowling front, Nonkululeko Mlaba (4/40) led the attack brilliantly, taking key wickets to restrict the White Ferns. The Proteas showed the perfect mix of discipline and aggression, a complete turnaround from their first match. For her century and match-winning influence, Tazmin Brits was named Player of the Match , proudly holding her medal after one of the most memorable performances of her career. Image: Match against New Zealand Key Takeaways and What’s Next Resilience and Response – From a crushing defeat to a confident win, South Africa proved their mental toughness. Brits in Brilliant Form – With her fifth ODI hundred of the year, Tazmin Brits continues to make history and inspire belief. Spin Dominance – Nonkululeko Mlaba’s control and accuracy highlight South Africa’s strength in adapting to subcontinental pitches. Momentum Matters – The New Zealand win brings renewed confidence as the Proteas look ahead to tougher opponents in the group stage. Image: Match against New Zealand After a shaky start, the Proteas Women have reminded everyone what they’re capable of: power, precision, and passion. This latest century not only powered the Proteas to a much-needed six-wicket victory, but also capped a record-breaking run of form for Brits in 2025. For context, the previous record for women’s ODI centuries in one year was four, a mark Brits has now surpassed with flair and consistency. Fittingly, her 101* vs New Zealand was Brits’ first-ever World Cup ton and earned her the Player of the Match award as South Africa reignited their World Cup campaign. Chasing 232, she reached her century in just 87 balls, unleashing a mix of elegance and aggression that left the New Zealand bowlers searching for answers. In partnership with Sune Luus , Brits put on a record 159-run stand for the second wicket , South Africa’s highest-ever partnership in a Women’s World Cup match. By the time Brits departed for 101 (15 fours, 1 six), the Proteas were cruising to victory. Luus (81* off 114) guided the team home with overs to spare, a powerful statement after their earlier loss. Her achievements include: Fastest ever (male or female) to seven ODI hundreds , reaching the milestone in just 41 innings. First woman to score five ODI tons in a single year. Three consecutive centuries , matching a record last set in 2017. Captain Laura Wolvaardt praised her teammate. Social media erupted after her latest ton, with fans calling 2025 the “ Year of Brits .” Former players, commentators, and teammates celebrated the achievement as a landmark moment for South African cricket and women’s sport as a whole.
- Minister Groenewald Secures 50 Farms for Prisoners in Drive Toward Self-Sufficiency
In a bold new plan that could reshape the operations and costs of South Africa’s correctional system, Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald has secured 50 farms to help South African prisons grow their own food, cut costs, and equip inmates with practical life skills. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations The farms form part of the Department of Correctional Services’ (DCS) Self-Sufficiency and Sustainability Strategy, aimed at reducing food procurement costs (currently close to R1 billion a year) while training inmates in agriculture, food processing, and related trades. Groenewald says the initiative will also reduce idle time that fuels gang activity and move prisons toward long-term self-reliance. According to the Minister, bakery and farm operations have already saved the department over R130 million in provisioning costs. By expanding agricultural production, DCS hopes to further shrink dependency on external suppliers and enhance rehabilitation through work and training. Foreign Nationals and Costs Groenewald has also reignited debate over foreign national inmates, arguing that roughly 26 000 foreign prisoners should serve their sentences in their home countries. He claims they cost South African taxpayers R11 million daily. While critics warn of diplomatic and human rights complications, the minister has urged cooperation with Home Affairs to explore legislative mechanisms enabling deportations. Challenges and Oversight Despite its promise, the plan faces major hurdles: ensuring land quality, infrastructure, and effective management; securing agricultural expertise; and safeguarding human rights. The Minister insists participation will remain voluntary and rehabilitative, but civil-society groups are expected to monitor the programme closely. South Africa’s prisons are already overcrowded, complicating new operational logistics. Allegations of corruption and weak oversight also raise concerns about implementation capacity. Opposition parties have questioned Groenewald’s visibility on recent oversight visits, adding to public skepticism. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations Early Progress and Next Steps DCS’s self-production drive is already under way, with prison bakeries in Westville and other facilities producing thousands of loaves daily. New bakeries are planned for Nigel, Brandvlei, Helderstroom, and Durban, complementing the new agricultural projects. Groenewald says the department must innovate and generate its own revenue streams instead of relying solely on the Treasury. Implementation schedules, performance tracking, and transparency will be key to the programme’s credibility. A Bold Gamble If successful, the 50-farm initiative could transform correctional operations - lowering food costs, improving rehabilitation, and promoting skills-based reintegration. But poor planning or oversight could turn it into another costly experiment. For now, the project represents a bold step toward reform, blending economic pragmatism with rehabilitation. Whether it becomes a model of sustainable incarceration (or a cautionary tale) will depend on execution and accountability in the years ahead.
