National flags waved proudly above the dust-filled air as competitors from all seven nations charged head-to-head through the 500-metre battlefield of obstacles built to the rigorous standards of the Interallied Confederation of Reserve Officers (CIOR)  competition format. The course included a brutal series of military-standard challenges: the Rope Ladder, Double Beam, Hurdles, Low Crawl, Elephant Steps, Swedish Rack, Assault Wall with Rope, Irish Table, Bear Pit, Chicken Ladder, Zigzag Balance Beams , and the final sequence of Assault Walls . Each element demanded total physical control and mental discipline. Spectators and fellow competitors alike cheered as soldiers conquered each barrier with grit and camaraderie, often sharing words of encouragement across national lines. The event concluded with a spirited group photo, a symbolic display of international unity forged through shared adversity and respect . The atmosphere crackled with anticipation as motorcyclists from the South African Army Specialised Infantry Capability (SAASIC)  guided the runners across the rugged veld terrain. The course, a mixture of flat plains, dry riverbeds, and hill climbs, demanded not only physical endurance but tactical awareness under strain. With boots striking rhythmically against the North West soil, the international competitors pressed forward, their faces marked by determination and exhaustion in equal measure. A family has been left with nothing after their home in Ikageng was completely destroyed by fire late on Friday night. The blaze, which occurred on 3 October , forced the family to escape through a window moments before the structure was engulfed in flames. Though no injuries were reported, the family lost all their belongings, including furniture, clothes, appliances, and personal documents. The South African United Community and Cultural Industry Federation (SAUCCIF), in partnership with the National Arts Council (NAC), recently hosted a PESP6 Workshop/Clinic aimed at assisting artists and arts organisations in navigating the NAC Grant Management System (GMS). The workshop was designed to ensure applicants are fully prepared for the PESP6 open call, which closes on 9 October 2025. Participants received hands-on guidance in checking compliance documents, strengthening their applications, and framing responses effectively to meet NAC requirements. Bridging the Gap for Rural and Township Creatives This initiative placed special emphasis on supporting artists from township and rural communities. The goal was to ensure that creatives from underrepresented areas have equal access to funding opportunities and institutional support. North West Province Session In the North West province, within the JB Marks Local Municipality, the session was facilitated by Mr. Yuhl Headman and Mr. Brian Ntombela of SAUCCIF. Both facilitators shared their extensive expertise and practical knowledge with attendees, helping them understand the essential elements of compliance and proposal development. Met vanjaar se tema het die Potch Geesfees span een doel voor oë gehad - om werklik terug te ploeg in die Potchefstroom gemeenskap. En nou, ses weke later, het die terugploeg eindelik begin.  Foto (Verskaf): Dié dames is nie bang om vuil te word nie Plan van aksie ‘n Hele paar organisasies het hande gevat met Potch Geesfees en op Vrydag, 3 Oktober, het vrywilligers, elk met ‘n swartsak in die hand, die middelmanne op die N12 begin skoonmaak. Dít was slegs stap een. Die volgende stap was om die grond voor te berei met die doel om vier tuine te skep. Die span het lekker saamgewerk en kort voor lank was die grond voorberei en het almal gehoop en bid vir ‘n goeie reënbui. Die volgende dag is die beddings verfraai en dié 'waterwise garden' is ‘n baie vriendeliker gesig wat besoekers nou in Potchefstroom verwelkom.  'n Woord van dank Hierdie projekte kan nie sonder die hulp van vrywilligers gedoen word nie en ‘n woord van dank gaan uit aan die volgende rolspelers:  Kooperasie Kroeg en Kos  Meerkat Online Auctions  Klinkies Potchefstroom  AfriForum Buurtspan  The Go-To Guy  Jonssons Workwear  Love Potch  OMV Cruisers Guanoboost het ook hand opgesteek, en hulle het 25L vloeibare kunsmis geskenk om die plante mooi aan te help nadat dit geplant is. ALS het ook natuurlik ingespring en het die watergeute langs die N12 skoongemaak. Hulle het ‘n ekstra span van 10 mense gehad wat Maandag (6 Oktober) papiere opgetel en verder skoongemaak het. Teen druktyd was dié span steeds besig om gras te sny op die N12 en ‘n tuinman was besig om die laaste beddings se vuilgoed uit te skoffel. According to the Minister, bakery and farm operations have already saved the department over R130 million in provisioning costs. By expanding agricultural production, DCS hopes to further shrink dependency on external suppliers and enhance rehabilitation through work and training. Foreign Nationals and Costs Groenewald has also reignited debate over foreign national inmates, arguing that roughly 26 000 foreign prisoners should serve their sentences in their home countries. He claims they cost South African taxpayers R11 million daily. While critics warn of diplomatic and human rights complications, the minister has urged cooperation with Home Affairs to explore legislative mechanisms enabling deportations. Challenges and Oversight Despite its promise, the plan faces major hurdles: ensuring land quality, infrastructure, and effective management; securing agricultural expertise; and safeguarding human rights. The Minister insists participation will remain voluntary and rehabilitative, but civil-society groups are expected to monitor the programme closely. South Africa’s prisons are already overcrowded, complicating new operational logistics. Allegations of corruption and weak oversight also raise concerns about implementation capacity. Groenewald says the department must innovate and generate its own revenue streams instead of relying solely on the Treasury. Implementation schedules, performance tracking, and transparency will be key to the programme’s credibility.
