The Vat Verniet Tafel recently executed a highly successful series of "Trolley Days,"  where volunteer teams stood at various supermarkets to fill shopping trolleys with community donations. During these events, which included a drive on Saturday, November 29th, teams were stationed at locations such as Pick 'n Pay Van der Hoffpark, Pick 'n Pay Canal Crossing, Mooirivier Junction Checkers, and Econo Foods. These days resulted in incredible collections of chips, toys, and essential food items. A video documenting the success of these Trolley Days is soon to be shared, serving as a powerful testament to the community's generosity. • The Bravery of Two Firefighters: Above and Beyond the Call of Duty

The Potchefstroom Fire Protection Association had embarked on a major 800-hectare block burn project, a meticulously planned two-week operation aimed at clearing old grass and preparing fire breaks. Image: Trauma First Responder Chaplaincy The Unexpected Turn On October 7, 2025, what began as a routine day of burning and fire break preparation took a sudden, dangerous turn. As the day progressed, unexpected high winds whipped up, causing a section of the prepared fire break to reignite. The fire rapidly gathered strength and began moving quickly toward the farm's boundary. The Incident Commander (IC) and several firefighters responded promptly, arriving on the scene. Their swift, coordinated action managed to extinguish the flare-up quickly, minimising the immediate threat to the surrounding area. An Invisible Danger Following standard operating procedures, all response vehicles were instructed to operate strictly within the already burnt sections of land. However, the density of the dormant grass in these areas was significant, generating intense, unseen heat . This extreme heat caused a catastrophic failure: the fuel line beneath the IC's response vehicle melted, allowing diesel to drip onto the scorched ground. In a matter of moments, the dripping fuel ignited, and flames began to engulf the underside of the vehicle. The IC was completely unaware of the raging fire growing directly beneath him. Image: Trauma First Responder Chaplaincy The Heroic Intervention It took the alertness and quick thinking  of two firefighters to spot the danger. They immediately began spraying water underneath the vehicle to suppress the flames, alerting the IC to the immediate threat. By this time, the fire had already begun to damage the vehicle's exterior. Without hesitation, these two firefighters acted decisively. They opened the vehicle door and, pulling the IC to safety through the flames , rescued their colleague. All the while, they continued to spray water, ensuring the fire was fully extinguished and preventing further destruction. Thanks to their decisive and courageous actions, the vehicle sustained only minor damage, and, most importantly, the Incident Commander's life was saved. Watch the Facebook video here: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/19tDYVdxAD/ The 2025 Bravery Award The professionalism, quick thinking, and willingness of these two firefighters to risk their own safety to protect a colleague and property are truly commendable. This heroic act perfectly exemplifies a dedication that goes above and beyond the call of duty. The Trauma First Responders Chaplaincy recognised this brave and courageous act, and proudly awarded them with the 2025 Bravery Award. #TheGoToGuy #BraveryAward2025 #FirefighterHeroes #BeyondTheCall #PotchefstroomFire 🔥👨‍🚒🏅🚨

Following a comprehensive press conference hosted by the Local Economic Development (LED) Directorate, the municipality confirmed that construction on large-scale solar projects, marking the city's most substantial investment wave in over a decade, is anticipated to begin in 2026 . Image: The Go-To Guy Creations The press briefing, held on Monday, November 24, 2025, convened local media and a municipal delegation to articulate a clear message: Matlosana is actively positioning itself for economic renewal, aiming to be a competitive and investment-friendly city. 💡 A New Dawn: Projects Offer Lifeline to Underdevelopment The Executive Mayor underscored the vital role of the projects, describing them as the city's largest in recent memory, with their timing being crucial. Facing significant challenges, including high unemployment, declining industrial activity, and chronic underdevelopment, the solar program represents a strategic pivot. It is framed not just as an electricity generation initiative but as a comprehensive strategy for economic revitalisation  and enhanced investor confidence. The developments, while strategically located near established infrastructure in areas like Stilfontein, Khuma, Orkney, Kanana, Hartbeesfontein, and Tigane , are intended to provide benefits across all ten regions of Matlosana. 🤝 Key Partnerships Driving the Green Transition The municipality confirmed formal partnerships with four major renewable energy developers, forming one of the North West Province’s most significant renewable energy portfolios: Scatec Solar Mulilo Battery Energy Storage Project OPEG Solar Project Naos PV Project (SOLA Group) These initiatives integrate both solar photovoltaic (PV) plants  and battery energy storage systems (BESS) , designed to ensure a stable, efficient, and climate-resilient power supply for the region. 💼 Economic Impact: Job Creation and SMME Opportunities The combined investment is forecast to generate at least 2,000 jobs  during the construction and operational phases, with potential for further expansion. A central focus is on ensuring local procurement, making opportunities accessible to local SMMEs, cooperatives, suppliers, and service providers . Key economic advantages highlighted by the municipality include: Local employment opportunities across multiple project phases. Training and skills development programs in partnership with tertiary and skills development institutions. Increased revenue generation for the municipality. Strengthened investor confidence and long-term socio-economic development initiatives. ⚖️ Governance and Transparency: Correcting Past Mistakes To ensure equitable access and accountability, the municipality has committed to a transparent approach, establishing a Project Stakeholder Steering Committee . This committee will oversee the project rollout and will include representatives from: The Office of the Executive Mayor The Municipal Manager The LED Directorate Town Planning The Local Business Forum Ward councillors and community representatives The energy developers The committee’s mandate is to ensure proper communication and fairness, signaling a commitment to correcting past governance challenges and ensuring open information sharing with the public. 🚀 The Future: Matlosana Open for Sustainable Business The city has emphasized its dedication to streamlining administrative processes and removing investment bottlenecks to establish Matlosana as a prime destination for renewable energy  and green industrialisation. The expected outcomes of the solar projects include: The addition of 600 or more Megawatts  to Matlosana’s electricity grid. A reduction in load-shedding  pressures across the region. Support for cleaner, more sustainable energy production. Attracting new green investors into the North West Province. An Era of Innovation and Shared Prosperity Begins The press conference concluded by affirming that the City of Matlosana is entering a new chapter defined by innovation, sustainability, and shared prosperity . The combined efforts of municipal teams, LED officials, business stakeholders, and development partners have culminated in a program designed to build a city that actively creates jobs, attracts essential investment, and delivers an enhanced quality of life for all its residents. #TheGoToGuy #MatlosanaSolar #CleanEnergyHub #NorthWestInvestment #EconomicRevitalisation 🌞🤝💰🚀

  • Community Gathers in Solidarity to Honour GBV Victims as Matlasenyane Case Moves Forward

Stakeholders, community members, and supporters from across Potchefstroom gathered this week in a powerful show of unity to honour the life of 17-year-old Kelebogile Matlasenyane and other victims of gender-based violence. The gathering formed part of a broader restorative justice initiative aimed at supporting affected families while reinforcing the community’s shared commitment to combating violence against women and children. Community Gathering Focused on Healing and Solidarity The event brought together residents, activists, faith leaders, government representatives, and institutions who stood alongside the Matlasenyane family during an emotional remembrance ceremony. Attendees reflected not only on Kelebogile’s life but also on other victims such as Nomsa Jass, whose body was discovered in August of the previous year. Organisers highlighted the importance of creating safe spaces for grieving families and emphasised that community solidarity remains a critical element in the fight against gender-based violence. Messages shared during the gathering centred on healing, remembrance, and a continued call for systemic accountability. Aganang FM played a notable role by giving the movement a platform, allowing voices from the community to be heard more widely. Representatives from the Office of the Mayor, the police, military, and various local departments attended as well, lending institutional support to the initiative. Speakers throughout the day noted that the community’s willingness to stand together, across age groups, wards, and backgrounds, demonstrated how shared strength can illuminate even the darkest moments. Background of the Case and Current Court Status Kelebogile Matlasenyane’s death remains central to the call for justice. According to police reports, 20-year-old Fuzile Besani turned himself in at the Potchefstroom Police Station on 2 October 2025. He later led officers, including Captain J. Pretorius, to his home in Promosa, where the body of the 17-year-old was discovered concealed inside a chicken coop at the back of the yard. Investigators believe that the teen died following an argument during September of the same year. It is further alleged that Besani, with the assistance of a friend, moved and hid the body the following day. The case has been postponed to 29 January 2026  to allow for further investigation as authorities finalise statements, forensic evidence, and additional supporting material required for the next stage of the legal process. Final Thought As the court prepares to continue its work early next year, the community remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting the Matlasenyane family and advocating for justice. The recent gathering underscored how collective compassion, awareness, and unity can drive meaningful change, serving as both a memorial for Kelebogile and a call to action against gender-based violence. #TheGoToGuy #JusticeForKelebogile #PotchefstroomCommunity #EndGBV #RestorativeJustice #CommunityUnity 🕯️💜🤝🏽📢⚖️

  • Holiday crafting, minus the screen time and sugar crash

Parents looking for something to keep grade 4 to 7 kids busy in the December holidays might want to pencil in a few mornings at Romy’s Habby and Crafter Soul Studio. The studio is running a December Holiday Program packed with hands on craft sessions that cost less than the price of a movie and snacks. The bonus is that the kids go home with something they actually made, not just a popcorn bucket and a vague memory of explosions. Sessions run from 10 to 12 and are suitable for learners in grades 4 to 7. Each workshop is two hours long, which is just enough time to make something cool without anyone melting into a glue puddle. Kids should bring their own snacks, because a hungry crafter is a grumpy crafter. Pre booking is required. What’s on the table this December Every session costs R200, and each one focuses on a specific project. There is also a three session option for R500 for families who want to book a few dates in one go. Here is the line up for December 2025: 8 December 2025: Kids journal, decorate your own. 9 December 2025: Bookmarks for Christmas gifts, paint. 10 December 2025: Sun catchers, beads and crystals. 11 December 2025: Button art, cats and dogs. 12 December 2025: Feather art, white charcoal on black paper. 15 December 2025: Paint a castle. 17 December 2025: Make a Christmas wreath with ribbon. 18 December 2025: Make a fidget toy. 19 December 2025: Paint elves or gnomes. 20 December 2025: Christmas tree decorations. 22 December 2025: Treasure tins (large). 23 December 2025: Make your own snow globe. 24 December 2025: Quilling art. If that sounds like a lot, it is. The variety means kids can pick what grabs their attention, whether that is quilling art creations, wooden bookmarks, a bright sun catcher, or even an upcycled wind charm. Gifts they can make themselves The programme is geared towards letting kids make personalised items that work well as gifts for family members. A handmade bookmark, decorated journal, snow globe or set of tree decorations has a lot more heart than another last minute dash for socks. It also keeps the “I didn’t know what to get you” panic safely in the adult lane where it belongs. Booking and contact details For bookings or more information, parents can WhatsApp: Dilyn on 083-571-3589 Aldi on 083-381-6222 The studio can also be found on Facebook at Crafter Soul Studio . In short, it is a holiday plan that keeps kids busy, making things they are proud of, and gives parents a break from hearing “I’m bored” on repeat. Everyone wins, including the family member who ends up with a very sparkly sun catcher.

  • Creative teens, here’s the December plan

Parents who are hearing the dreaded “I’m bored” on loop, and teenagers who have already scrolled through the entire internet twice, might want to take note. Romy’s Habby & Crafter Soul Studio is running a December holiday programme for teenagers, with hands on arts and crafts sessions most weekdays in the run up to Christmas. It’s informal, practical and aimed at keeping creative hands busy at a time of year when screens usually win by default. Pre bookings are required, so no last minute “drop and dash” missions. When and where Sessions run from 15:00 to 17:00. The studio reminds attendees to bring their own snacks, because nothing says “holiday workshop” like trying to hot glue something while running on empty. The programme takes place in Potchefstroom. What’s on the calendar Here’s the line up as advertised, with each session listing the project, duration and cost. 8 December 2025: Willow wreath or dream catcher, 2 hours, R200 9 December 2025: Sun catchers, beads and crystals, 2 hours, R220 10 December 2025: Button art, tree of life, 2 hours, R200 11 December 2025: Basic woodwork (10:00 to 12:00), 2 to 3 hours, R250 12 December 2025: Pinecone gnomes, 2 hours, R200 15 December 2025: Bag charms and keyrings, 2 hours, R200 17 December 2025: Basic woodwork (10:00 to 12:00), 2 to 3 hours, R250 18 December 2025: Personalise a journal, 2 hours, R200 19 December 2025: Dot art, coasters as gifts, 2 hours, R200 20 December 2025: Basic welding skills (09:00 to 11:00), 2 to 3 hours, R250 22 December 2025: Basic welding skills (10:00 to 12:00), 2 to 3 hours, R250 23 December 2025: Feather art, white charcoal on black paper, 2 hours, R200 24 December 2025: Funky paperclips, 2 hours, R200 Yes, that’s everything from dream catchers and sun catchers to pinecone gnomes and glass bottle lanterns. If a teenager comes home with a new journal, a welded masterpiece and possibly a small forest of gnomes, at least nobody can say they didn’t do something over the holidays. Costs and booking details Each session costs R200, except the sun catcher session at R220 and the woodwork and welding sessions at R250. There’s also a multi session option: three sessions for R500, which is handy for anyone looking to commit to a few afternoons of creative calm. Bookings can be made via WhatsApp. Contact Dilyn on 083-571-3589 or Aldi on 083-381-6222. • StroomCares Emergency Appeal: Potchefstroom Family of Six Needs Urgent Help After Four Knockdowns in One Year

The Go-To Guy Potchefstroom’s StroomCares initiative, dedicated to being "Potchefstroom's Giving Stream," today highlights a local family facing an urgent race against the clock. Image: The Go-To Guy Creations After a relentless year of unforeseen crises, this family of six finds themselves in a desperate situation, needing immediate community support to secure a roof over their heads and vital transport in less than ten days. Their story is a powerful reminder of why, in Potch, when one of us needs a hand, the rest of us bring the stream. 2025 Begins with Devastating Loss and Health Battles The year 2025 started with devastating setbacks. The family, who wishes to remain private while they rebuild, was unexpectedly forced out of their long-term rental home after it was sold. They had to vacate within 24 hours, losing not only their residence but also many of their personal belongings and furniture in the frantic move. They secured a temporary two-bedroom apartment, but the physical and emotional toll on the parents was immense. It was during this period that the mother also received difficult health news, including diagnoses of thyroid problems and anemia, adding serious medical strain to their already challenging financial and living situation. A Whirlwind of Change and Critical Deadlines Just as they began to settle and build a new life, a new development turned their world into a whirlwind: an unexpected, late-stage pregnancy. The mother is now seven months pregnant, adding an immediate and critical need for stability and space. Believing their luck had finally turned, they were offered a four-bedroom house to rent for the same amount as their small apartment. They thought, "Thank God, now things will start to go better." Tragically, that house has also now been sold, forcing the family back into the housing market with a non-negotiable deadline. The Urgent Need for Home and Transport The family must be out of their current residence by the end of November 2025. This immediate housing crisis is compounded by the loss of their borrowed transport. They have been relying on a vehicle they must now return, and with only one working parent and no debt, meaning they cannot access finance, the family has no way to move or transport their growing number of children. The pressure is on to find a new house, secure both the rental deposit and the first month’s rent, and somehow acquire a vehicle, all in under ten days. This desperate search comes as the husband has also recently been diagnosed with scoliosis and arthritis, further illustrating the severe challenges this resilient family is facing. How Potchefstroom Can Help: The StroomCares Call to Action The mother says they have been knocked down four times in one year, but they are determined to get back on their feet. They are appealing to the community for a simple chance at stability before their new baby arrives. Every rand truly makes a difference, every R10 helps to secure their future and provide a safe transition into a new home. Potchefstroom, let's show them the strength of StroomCares. Please consider sharing this story to broaden its reach and, if possible, contributing to their urgent cause. Let's help bring the stream of giving to this family today. • Silent Book Club wraps up the year in Potch - 6 December

Potchefstroom’s book lovers have one last date with quiet this year. The Silent Book Club is back for its final meet-up of 2025, and this time it comes with a festive tilt and a very low-pressure vibe. There’s no website to bookmark, no ticket link to panic-buy from, and no pricing to calculate. The only digital trail is on Facebook, for anyone who likes to double-check plans before leaving the house. When and where to pitch up The year-end session happens on 6 December 2025 at 13:00. The venue is Blank Canvas Café, 72 Thabo Mbeki Way, on the NWU campus. You’ll find it at Gate 6, in the same building as the Biokinetics, Bult. The address is Potchefstroom. How it works, in plain speak Silent Book Club is exactly what it sounds like: people gather, everyone reads their own book, and nobody is put on the spot to explain plot twists or defend their taste. No sign-ups, no due dates, no awkward “so what did you think?” circle unless you want one afterwards. It’s a read-in, not a book report. This last session of the year invites readers to bring something they’re keen to read and settle in for a calm, cosy hour or two. The theme is festive, but the main rule stays the same: read together, quietly. The Honesty Library angle There’s also a “Bring a book, take a book” Honesty Library running alongside the gathering. The idea is simple and refreshingly old-school: swap a book you’re done with for one you haven’t met yet, no forms, no tracking system, just trust and the hope that someone else will love what you’ve passed on. Stories move from one reader to the next, like a relay race where the baton is a paperback. The event is in collaboration with the second-hand bookshop in Baillie Park, which is basically a public service for anyone whose bookshelf is already bending but still somehow has space for “just one more”. With the school year done, the holiday buzz starting, and everyone’s social battery on a mixed schedule, a silent book club is a pretty sharp way to sign off. Show up, read, maybe swap a book, and head out feeling a little more human. No noise required.

  • Die Pienk Huis Does Christmas Lunch So You Don’t Have To

Christmas lunch is one of those traditions everyone loves right up until it’s their turn to cook. This year Die Pienk Huis in Potchefstroom is offering Christmas takeaways on 24 December 2025, aimed at people who would rather spend the day arguing about who hid the brandy than peeling potatoes. There’s no website and no ticket link to fuss with. Orders are handled the old-fashioned way through their Facebook page or directly with the team. If anyone needs to double-check details, they can phone 081-344-1822. What’s on the Menu Die Pienk Huis has put together a full spread that covers starters, mains, sides and dessert. In other words, the whole “proper Christmas meal” thing, without the sink full of pots afterwards. Starters set the tone as proudly South African. There’s biltong pâté with crostini, described as rich and creamy with crisp crostini on the side. Then come mini biltong quiches, light and buttery, and basically proof that biltong can improve just about anything. Mains give a few solid options for the main event: Traditional leg of lamb with rosemary, tomato and garlic, slow-roasted until someone’s uncle starts giving cooking tips even though he didn’t lift a finger. Chicken roll filled with feta, spinach, cream cheese and pepperdew, for the people who like their Christmas dinner with a bit of tang. Beef shin pie, slow-cooked with red wine and mushrooms, topped with buttery pastry. Smoked glazed gammon with ginger and honey glaze, tender and glossy without needing a second glaze job from whoever usually overdoes the oven. Sides read like the kind of list that makes people suddenly remember they “actually do like vegetables” at Christmas: Basmati rice, light and fragrant. Sweet potato caramel roll, creamy and sweet. Parmesan baby potatoes, golden and crispy. Pumpkin fritters with caramel sauce, soft and delightful. Green bean bundles in bacon, crisp and savoury. Oven-roasted vegetables with feta, colourful and flavourful. Italian tomato salad with mozzarella, basil and balsamic drizzle. Desserts finish things off properly: Pavlova with caramel, cream and berries. Black forest cherry pudding. Mini cheesecakes with fresh strawberries. No one is saying people must share dessert, but Die Pienk Huis is clearly giving enough reason to pretend they will. Price, Pre-Orders and Collection The takeaway package is R445 per person. Orders are pre-order and pre-pay, which should help avoid last-minute panic on Christmas Eve. Collection is at 12:00 on 24 December from Die Pienk Huis, at 190 Peter Mokaba Street, Central, Potchefstroom. Christmas is still Christmas, but at least this way someone else worries about the roast while everyone else worries about whether the ice will last and who’s on playlist duty.

  • Storm Halts Efforts to Restore Power in Potchefstroom

Large parts of Potchefstroom are currently experiencing a power outage, with the municipal electricity department confirming that efforts to restore supply are temporarily stalled due to severe weather conditions. 🛑 Restoration Efforts Delayed by Severe Weather The power outage was reported to municipal electricians around 14:30. While the fault has been identified and the department is aware of the situation, the ongoing storm has made working conditions unsafe for maintenance crews. Issue Awareness:  Municipal electricians have been notified of the fault and are prepared to address the issue. Current Delay:  Due to the current storm, crews are unable to safely commence work on the affected infrastructure. Plea for Patience:  Residents are kindly asked to be patient while awaiting safe weather conditions that will allow technicians to begin repair work. The DA Ward 7 Councillor issued the notification, assuring the community that the department will prioritize resolving the issue and restoring power as soon as the inclement weather subsides. Final Thought Severe weather, including thunderstorms, often leads to power disruptions in South African towns due to lightning strikes, high winds damaging lines, or localised flooding affecting substations. Municipal safety protocols dictate that maintenance and repair work on high-voltage electrical infrastructure cannot proceed until weather conditions improve, minimising risk to the technical staff. Residents should prepare for potential delays until the storm passes. #TheGoToGuy #PotchPowerOutage #StormDamage #Potchefstroom #ElectricityRestoration ⚡️⛈️🔌🙏

The morning wraps up with a light meal, because creativity is much easier when it’s not competing with hunger. • Potchefstroom High School for Boys Honours Sponsors at Annual Thanksgiving Dinner

Potchefstroom High School for Boys (PHSB) recently hosted its annual Sponsors' Thanksgiving Dinner, a special and meaningful evening dedicated to expressing profound gratitude to the businesses and community partners who have generously supported the school and its learners throughout the academic year. Image: Potchefstroom High School for Boys The dinner, held in an atmosphere of mutual appreciation and strong community spirit, was specifically aimed at highlighting the critical, enabling role played by sponsors in ensuring the school's ongoing success and the provision of quality opportunities for its students. The Foundation of Dreams and Opportunity In a statement released by the school, the fundamental impact of this external support was underscored. "Your donations and sponsorship are truly the foundation upon which the dreams and ambitions of our young learners are built," the school noted. "It is your unwavering commitment that empowers us to pursue not only academic excellence but also significant achievements in sports, culture, and extramural development." This selfless and vital support extends far beyond simple financial contributions. It is instrumental in enabling essential infrastructure upgrades, the acquisition of necessary teaching and sports equipment, and the provision of access to diverse opportunities that would otherwise be beyond the reach of many young men attending PHSB. These partnerships are key to fostering a holistic and supportive educational environment. Looking Ahead to a Vital 2026 Partnership During the dinner, attention was also focused on the future, with the school expressing a resolute commitment to expanding and strengthening these partnerships in the upcoming 2026 academic year. The school leadership affirmed that the continued success and growth of its learners are directly linked to the strength and longevity of these relationships with the broader business community. "We are deeply grateful for your continuous belief in our mission and our boys. We eagerly anticipate building upon these vital relationships in 2026 and collaboratively working to keep the dreams of our learners thriving and alive! Thank you for being such an integral and valued part of our extended school family," the PHSB team concluded. The Thanksgiving Dinner served as more than just a gesture of thanks; it was a critical networking event that reinforced the strong bonds between PHSB and its supportive stakeholders. It stands as a powerful testament to the fact that a strong school community's achievement is profoundly dependent on the goodwill, collaboration, and investment of its wider network. #PotchBoys #PHSB #SponsorsDinner #Thanksgiving #SchoolFamily #Potchefstroom
