  • Johannesburg Hosts a Dramatic and Defining G20 Summit

South Africa made history this past weekend as it became the first African nation to host the Group of 20 (G20) Summit - a milestone moment that unfolded with both diplomatic triumphs and tensions. Held in Johannesburg from 22–23 November, the summit brought together leaders and representatives from the world’s largest economies to address the planet’s most urgent challenges, from climate change to global inequality. A Declaration Pushed Through Against the Odds South African President Cyril Ramaphosa described the final G20 declaration as a symbol of a “renewed commitment to multilateral cooperation,” even as the summit weathered significant objections from the United States, which boycotted the main engagements. Addressing the closing ceremony on Sunday, Ramaphosa emphasised that the declaration demonstrated how “shared goals outweigh our differences,” underscoring the collective commitment to concrete global action aimed at improving lives across the world. Despite U.S. resistance, South Africa succeeded in rallying broad support from G20 members (including major players such as China, Russia, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, and the United Kingdom) for a declaration that highlighted the needs of poorer nations. These included calls for: increased financial support after climate-related disasters, measures to ease unsustainable national debt, and assistance for transitions to green and renewable energy. Notably, South Africa broke with the long-standing tradition of releasing the leaders’ declaration at the end of the summit. Instead, it was issued on the opening day (another first in G20 history) reflecting both the urgency of global challenges and the determination of the host nation to set a decisive tone. Lula: “Multilateralism Is Alive” Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, whose country recently hosted COP30, praised the Johannesburg summit’s outcomes. He remarked that the success of both COP30 and the G20 Summit proved that multilateralism remains strong. He added that the next crucial step is turning the G20’s decisions into real, impactful action. A Diplomatic Rift with Washington While the summit succeeded in forging new consensus, it was also overshadowed by a tense diplomatic row with the United States. The dispute began when the U.S. declined to send a head-of-state representative, a requirement for the formal handover of the rotating G20 presidency. Former President Donald Trump, who is set to lead the U.S. again in 2026, boycotted the summit entirely, levelling debunked allegations that South Africa’s Black-majority government persecutes its white minority. South Africa refused to hand over the presidency to what it described as a junior U.S. representative, calling the decision disrespectful. Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola insisted that only a head of state, special presidential envoy, or minister would have been appropriate. The White House, however, denied claims that it sought last-minute participation. By Sunday, Ramaphosa confirmed that despite the aborted formal ceremony, the G20 presidency had nonetheless been passed on to the United States. Global Security, Gaza, and Erdogan’s Warning The crisis in Gaza also took centre stage in Johannesburg. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated his position that Israeli actions amounted to “genocide,” placing responsibility squarely on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Erdogan confirmed that Türkiye is still evaluating whether to deploy security forces as part of an international stabilisation mission being developed following recent ceasefire agreements signed in Egypt - negotiations in which Türkiye played a key mediating role. Argentina and the U.S. Stand Alone in Opposition Argentina, whose President Javier Milei skipped the summit, joined the U.S. in opposing the leaders’ declaration. Their refusal contrasted sharply with the rest of the G20, which supported the Africa-led agenda centering on climate justice and global wealth inequality. A Defining Moment for Africa on the World Stage As the first G20 summit ever hosted on African soil, Johannesburg’s moment in the global spotlight came with high expectations - and it delivered. South Africa showcased leadership in rallying strong support for vulnerable nations, challenging traditional power dynamics, and foregrounding the issues that matter most to the Global South. Despite diplomatic turbulence, the summit demonstrated that Africa’s place in global decision-making is growing, assertive, and impossible to ignore.

  • Hard-Working but Honest: A Closer Look at the 2019 Mahindra Pik Up 2.2 mHawk S4 Single Cab

In the rugged world of single-cab bakkies, the 2019 Mahindra Pik Up 2.2 mHawk S4 stands out for its simple, work-focused design and genuine diesel capability. With the 2.2-litre mHawk turbo-diesel engine, modest tech, and minimal luxuries, this vehicle isn’t about glamour, it’s about utility. In this article we take a detailed look at this offering (listed by our client Auto Trade in Klerksdorp), highlight the key specifications and real-world features, and discuss suitability and things to consider before buying. Background & What the Model Represents The Mahindra Pik Up (assembled in South Africa in later models) is designed for durability and practicality, especially in heavier-duty conditions or for commercial/utility use. According to the official specification brochure, the 2.2 mHawk diesel produces 103 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. The S4 single-cab variant is the base/utility version (rather than luxury-double-cab) which means you’re getting fewer frills, but more straightforward, robust hardware. Vehicle Overview – The Listing Details Here’s what the listing tells us about this particular vehicle: Year: 2019 Model: Mahindra Pik Up 2.2 mHawk S4 Single Cab Odometer: 149,900 km on the clock Colour: White Body type: Bakkie (Single Cab) Transmission: Manual Fuel: Diesel Service history: Partial service history only Additional features: Side steps, rubberised load-bed, tow bar, seat covers, aftermarket radio with AUX & USB Warranty: None These details indicate a vehicle that’s been used (as expected for a single-cab work type), maintained to some extent, and equipped with practical add-ons for work/utility use. Specifications – Engine & Performance Drawing from both the listing and official specs, here are the key figures: Engine & Performance Engine: 2.2 L turbo-diesel “mHawk” four-cylinder. Official spec shows 103 kW with 320 Nm torque. Fuel consumption (listed): Combined 7.7-7.9 L/100 km for this variant. The listing quotes 7.7-7.9/100km. Fuel tank capacity: ~80 L (official spec lists 80 L fuel tank). Theoretical fuel-range: ~1,000 km at listed consumption and full tank (listing indicates “~1000 km”). Drive train: Rear-wheel drive (4×2) in this listing. The official spec for single-cab S4 shows 4x2 in many cases. Tyres: 245/75 R16 front and rear (matching listing). Though 0-100 km/h and top speed are not explicitly listed in the standard spec, as this is a utility work-bakkie the focus is on torque and load capacity rather than sprint performance. Load & Utility Payload capacity: According to the brochure, the single-cab 4×2 version has payload ~1,195 kg. Towing capacity (braked): Official spec indicates up to ~2,500 kg. These numbers show that the vehicle is built to carry serious loads and serve in commercial roles rather than purely as a leisure bakkie. Features – Utility, Comfort & Tech Because this is a single-cab work-oriented model, the emphasis is on practicality over luxury. From the listing we have: Utility / Exterior Side steps (helpful for access when loading/unloading) Rubberised load-bed liner (protects the cargo area) Tow bar (enables trailer or equipment towing) Aftermarket radio with AUX/USB (adds some connectivity) Comfort / Tech Air-conditioning: Yes (the listing notes “Yes” under Air conditioning) 3 doors, 2 seats Power steering: Yes Bluetooth / Info display: None listed (tech is minimal) USB port: Yes (aftermarket) Navigation: None Safety ABS: Yes Airbags: 2 (driver & passenger) according to listing Traction control / Stability control: The listing shows “Traction control: Yes” but “Stability control: None” (this reflects the simpler spec) From the official spec brochure for the S4: features include power steering, USB/AUX, manual air-conditioning, dual front airbags, ABS with EBD. Practical Suitability & Real-World Considerations Who this vehicle suits Commercial/work-use buyer : Someone needing a straightforward, rugged single-cab bakkie for a job site, for hauling tools or equipment, or towing moderately heavy loads. Cost-conscious buyer : Because the spec is basic, you’re likely paying less than higher-trim double-cabs, yet still getting a solid diesel pick-up. Secondary/utility vehicle : If you already have a family car but need a tough “go-to” for work or outdoor gear, this could fit. What to check / consider before purchase Service history : The listing says “Partial Service History” — verify what exactly has been done, especially on the diesel engine (turbo, injectors, timing belt/chain etc). Mileage & usage : At ~149,900 km the vehicle has done substantial distance; inspect for wear on clutch, gearbox, suspension. Bed and tow-bar condition : Since it has load-bed use and tow-bar, inspect for structural damage, rust, misalignment. Tyres and consumables : 245/75 R16 tyres are big; check tread and age. Brakes, suspension bushes may have seen work. Tech & convenience : Accept that this is a basic bakkie; if you expect advanced infotainment or premium finishes you'll be disappointed. Resale / long-term support : Single-cab work bakkies may hold value for work-users rather than luxury buyers; parts for Mahindra are available, but availability and cost vary. Why This Listing Is Worth Considering The 2019 Mahindra Pik Up 2.2 mHawk S4 Single Cab offers a very direct, no-frills diesel pick-up experience. With an engine spec of 103 kW and 320 Nm, a large fuel tank and good theoretical fuel economy (~7.7-7.9 L/100km) this vehicle is tuned for work rather than show. The listing by Auto Trade appears honest: basic spec, practical add-ons, clear mileage, and realistic usage profile. If your daily needs involve hauling, towing or doing heavier-duty tasks, this vehicle delivers in the right set-up. On the flip side, if your use is more lifestyle or comfort-oriented, you might find the spec modest and lacking in refinement. But for its intended role, it stands up well. • “Enough Is Enough”: Thousands Join Women’s Shutdown in Pretoria Ahead of G20 Summit

On Thursday, 21 November, just a day before South Africa opened the first G20 Summit ever held on African soil, more than a thousand people gathered at the Union Buildings in Pretoria in a powerful display of unity. Their message was unmistakable and urgent: South Africa is in the grip of a gender-based violence crisis, and the world must not look away. Image (SABC News Facebook): Thousands of protestors lie down for 15 minutes The Women’s Shutdown, a nationwide call for women to withdraw their labour, their presence, and their economic participation, materialised into a massive physical demonstration as men, women, and children from every province converged on the country’s political heart. Their march, their silence, and their voices were intended not only for South African leaders but for G20 delegates arriving in the capital. For one day, they forced the world to confront what South Africa has long been living with. A Nation Standing Together in Grief and Defiance The atmosphere at the Union Buildings was a mix of mourning, outrage, and determination. Protestors carried placards, wore black, and shared messages demanding an end to Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) - a crisis that continues to claim the lives of South African women at some of the highest rates in the world. Men were among the most vocal participants, echoing the sentiment that ending GBV cannot be the burden of women alone. “The women birthed us as men, built societies through that… If we are to harm people that bring life to us, what future do we have?” — Kamohelo Metsing, protestor Another participant, Kegan Raea, voiced a sentiment shared by many at the march: “Why do they violate women? Men who violate women are not supposed to live in this society.” Their words were raw, painful, and reflective of a nation reaching breaking point. This year’s shutdown built on the momentum of previous actions, including the haunting #UnburyTheTruth campaign - symbolised by an oversized Zulu-beaded casket representing the 33.8% rise in femicide. That casket, still intentionally unburied, continues to stand as a memorial to thousands of women and children whose lives have been stolen. Image (Women for Change): The huge casket The Shutdown Meets the Global Stage With world leaders descending upon Johannesburg for the G20 Summit, activists used the timing to spotlight a devastating reality: South Africa cannot speak of economic growth while burying a woman every 2.5 hours. The Women’s Shutdown’s central demand remains unchanged and urgent: Declare Gender-Based Violence and Femicide a National Disaster. Not in another year. Not in another policy cycle. Not in another round of summits.  Now. Despite the adoption of the National Strategic Plan on GBVF (2020) and the passing of the GBVF Council Bill (2024), implementation has been slow and underfunded. The result? Unrelenting violence. Between April 2023 and March 2024 alone: 5,578 women were murdered 1,656 children were killed 42,569 rape cases were reported These figures exceed those of many recognised national disasters, yet GBVF has not been treated as one. A Movement Rooted in Action Organisers and protestors used the Shutdown to amplify key demands: 1. Immediate Judicial Reform No bail for suspects in rape, femicide, child sexual assault, or domestic violence cases Mandatory life sentences without parole for the worst forms of gender-based crimes Accountability for negligent police, court officials, and social workers 2. Funding for the National Strategic Plan on GBVF (2025–2030) Activists insist on immediate Treasury allocations to ensure the plan becomes more than a document. 3. Public Access to the Sex Offenders Register Parents, employers, and communities want transparency to protect women and children. 4. National Education and Awareness Campaigns Including GBV and consent education in all schools and sustained media campaigns. Image (Women for Change): Women's Shutdown A New Kind of Shutdown; One the World Cannot Ignore In many cities across the country, women stayed away from workplaces, campuses, homes, and digital platforms. They refused to cook, clean, care, teach, manage, or supervise. For one day, they withdrew from the economy and society to demand recognition of the unacknowledged labour that keeps the country functioning. The 12:00pm 15-minute national standstill  (where participants lay flat on the ground to honour the 15 women murdered daily) created a striking moment of silence and solidarity. Black clothing, purple profile pictures, and the hashtag #WomenShutdown  dominated streets and social media. “Without Women, South Africa Stops.” The Women’s Shutdown is more than a protest, it is a warning. It is a proclamation that women refuse to continue living in a country where safety is a privilege, not a guarantee. It is also a message to the G20 leaders meeting in Johannesburg: Global progress cannot be separated from the lives and safety of women. Economic growth means nothing if women are dying. Climate, trade, development, and diplomacy are empty without freedom from violence. A Future Women Deserve The movement reminds South Africa that GBVF is not inevitable. It is preventable. It is stoppable. And it requires immediate national action backed by political will, resources, and accountability. On 21 November, South African women (supported by men, children, and allies) stood at the Union Buildings to demand that the country finally confront the truth buried in thousands of unmarked graves. They shut down the nation to save its women. They raised their voices so no woman has to scream unheard. They mourned so future generations may not have to. And as the G20 unfolded, the world was forced to recognise a message South Africa has been shouting for years: If women are not safe, South Africa is not free.

Those involved claimed that no further tankers should enter the area until full supply is restored. The municipality strongly condemned these actions, stressing that they hinder emergency relief efforts and disadvantage vulnerable households who rely on tanker deliveries. Enforcing Compliance and Addressing Environmental Hazards The Town Planning section engaged directly with waste pickers, urging them not to store collected waste within the taxi-rank precinct due to health and safety concerns. Teams also addressed the presence of illegal workstations contributing to environmental pollution, particularly oil spillages that pose risks to pedestrians, businesses, and the surrounding ecosystem. 3. Tackling Illegal Business Practices Officials inspected informal business setups, including makeshift structures and containers converted into bedrooms. These activities violate municipal by-laws and raise concerns about safety, zoning, and overcrowding. Enforcement officers provided warnings and began corrective processes where necessary. Impact and Municipal Response Municipal leaders explained that the operation forms part of ongoing, routine interventions to maintain cleanliness, enhance safety, and ensure compliance at high-traffic areas. The Terminus Taxi Rank serves thousands of commuters daily, making it essential that the space remains well-organised, hygienic, and safe for taxi operators, informal traders, and travellers. Officials further emphasised that long-term improvements will require consistent collaboration between the municipality, businesses, and the community. Image: City of Matlosana Looking Forward The City of Matlosana plans to continue these joint operations as part of broader efforts to promote clean public spaces, responsible economic activity, and a more orderly urban environment. Ongoing engagement with traders, waste pickers, and commuters is expected to strengthen awareness and ensure more sustainable compliance. #TheGoToGuy #MatlosanaCleanUp #CommunitySafety #UrbanManagement #RespectOurCity 🧹🚧🚮🏙️

  • NWU Spreads Hope Through Retsa Tsela: Small Acts, Big Impact

💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 A heartwarming spirit of service filled Potchefstroom this week as North-West University (NWU) partnered with Retsa Tsela, a community-driven initiative founded by Peterson Sebati, to uplift local spaces and spark hope where it’s needed most. Image: NWU - North-West University What began as one person’s desire to restore and clean shared community areas has grown into a movement powered by purpose, compassion and the belief that small acts of kindness can create powerful waves of change. 🌱 “Be the Change in Your Community” — A Message in Action The Retsa Tsela team lives by a simple but meaningful motto: Be the change in your community. This vision aligns proudly with NWU’s values, making the partnership a natural and inspiring fit. Joined by NWU’s beloved mascot Eagi and members of the Student Campus Council (SCC), the university demonstrated its commitment to real, hands-on impact. In a generous gesture, Eagi and the SCC donated R30 000 to support the growth and sustainability of the Retsa Tsela initiative. This contribution will help expand their work, restoring spaces, uplifting schools, and reminding communities that they are seen, valued and supported. 🏫 Hope at Tshupane Primary School As part of the initiative, NWU students and Retsa Tsela leaders visited Tshupane Primary School  in Potchefstroom. The day was filled with storytelling, laughter and meaningful conversations, a moment where two groups of young changemakers connected through shared purpose. The school environment came alive with encouragement and inspiration as pupils interacted with role models who embody leadership, community spirit and kindness. For many learners, the visit served as a reminder that positive change is possible, starting right where they are. 💜 Building Tomorrow, Together The collaboration highlighted something NWU holds dear: the youth of today are building the tomorrow we all hope for. Through service, leadership and compassion, the university’s student leaders continue to shape a culture of unity and upliftment on and off campus.

  • Nature-I-Am Kids Club goes prehistoric for a morning - 29 November

If there’s one thing kids aged 4 to 12 tend to agree on, it’s that dinosaurs are still cool. The Nature-I-Am Kids Adventure Club is leaning into that universal truth with a Dino-themed morning outing on Saturday, 29 November 2025. The club’s next adventure runs from 09:00 to 11:30 at Lekwena Plaaskombuis, inside the Lekwena Private Game Reserve area on the N12 near Potchefstroom. Anyone planning to join should RSVP before 27 November by phoning Trudie on 082-459-7702. What’s happening on the day The plan is simple and happily prehistoric. Children will learn dinosaur facts, head out on a dino hunt, eat something nice, and earn a badge by the end of it all. In other words, it’s education with a side of running around, which is usually the best kind. It’s pitched as a “Dinosaur Adventure”, but the vibe is very much kids doing what kids do best: exploring, asking loud questions, and getting mildly competitive about who spotted the biggest imaginary T-Rex first. Costs and who can attend Costs work like this: club members pay according to their usual Kids Club fees, while non-members are welcome at R250 per child. For families looking to fill a Saturday morning with something a bit different and slightly Jurassic, this one offers a neat mix of learning, movement, and just enough dinosaur drama to keep everyone entertained. No meteor required.

  • Potchefstroom kry ’n Kersfees-koekie make-over 16 Desember

Op 16 Desember 2025 hou Tessie Kitchen and Crafts ’n Kersfees Koekie Versier Klas in Potchefstroom. Die klas vind plaas by Die Pienk Huis in Potchefstroom. Hoe werk besprekings? Daar is beperkte plekke, so mense wat lus is moet vroegtydig bespreek.
