  • NWU Snatch Last-Minute Equaliser to Hold Wits 2–2 in Soweto

The Eagles of North-West University (NWU) showed remarkable resilience in Round 3 of the Varsity Women’s Football tournament, coming from behind to claim a dramatic 2–2 draw against Wits University. The clash, played on 7 September at the UJ Soweto Stadium, kept fans on the edge of their seats as NWU battled back with a stoppage-time equaliser. Early Breakthroughs for Wits Wits, known as the Educated Footballers, started the brighter of the two sides and broke the deadlock through Aliyaah Allie , whose long-range strike in the opening stages stunned the NWU defence. Their momentum continued, and Lusanda Nyathi  doubled the advantage before halftime, leaving the Eagles with plenty of work to do. NWU Fight Back Before the Break Just when it seemed Wits would head into the interval comfortably in front, NWU found a way back. Pushing forward with intent, they pulled a goal back before the whistle to reduce the deficit to 2–1 at halftime. Second-Half Determination The Eagles returned for the second half with renewed purpose, pressing higher and creating opportunities. Despite Wits holding their ground, NWU refused to give up. Their persistence was rewarded in the dying moments of added time when they struck the equaliser that secured a share of the spoils. Starting XI – NWU Eagles Goalkeeper : Mmabatho Tladi (#26) Defenders : Neo Montshosi (#3), Veronicca Maswanganyi (#18), Vuyokazi Thambe (#4), Londeka Mabeba (#12) Midfielders : Kelebogile Dondolo (#8), Mbalentle Dlikilili (#16), Lethabo Molefe (#15), Naledi Mooketsi (#22) Forwards : Tshiamo Phiri (#11), Bokamoso Skosana (#21) Group B Standings (After Round 3) Pos Group B Teams PL W D L GF GA GD PTS 1 UJ Women’s Football 3 3 0 0 10 0 +10 9 2 NWU Women’s Football 3 1 1 1 7 10 -3 4 3 Wits Women’s Football 2 1 0 1 2 3 -1 3 4 CPUT Women’s Football 3 0 0 3 1 7 -6 0 Closing Thoughts It was a night of grit and determination for NWU, who showed their fighting spirit by refusing to surrender even in the dying moments. The project is part of the Business-in-a-Box (BIB) initiative , a public-private partnership between Dunlop and DEDECT designed to modernize township and rural tyre businesses across the province. The MEC acknowledged that the project faced administrative delays  that stalled progress. Following direct intervention and coordination with JB Marks Local Municipality, the obstacles were cleared, and the site handover is scheduled for next week  to enable infrastructure installation. MEC Lenkopane directed the project team to engage local communities, taxi operators, and nearby businesses , ensuring inclusive consultation. She also encouraged the site’s expansion into a broader trade market , giving space for other community members to participate in economic activities and generate additional business opportunities. Kgolo GC Trading Enterprise At Kgolo GC Trading Enterprise , MEC Lenkopane held discussions with the business owner to identify growth barriers. The major concern raised was financial management , which has limited expansion and job creation. In response, DEDECT committed to deploying a specialist financial assessment team  to review the enterprise’s operations. • First Quarter Wobbles Condemn Boks to Painful Defeat in Auckland, Team Reset for Wellington Rematch

The Springboks’ long drought at Eden Park continues following a harsh 24–17 loss to the All Blacks in Auckland on Saturday, 6 September 2025. Costly early errors under wet conditions proved decisive, though a fierce comeback in the second half gave them hope. Now, attention turns to Wellington, where the Boks have named a refreshed lineup in search of redemption this Saturday, 13 September. Analysis: A Tale of Two Halves This match epitomised contrasting fortunes. The opening 17 minutes, marred by poor execution, were costly. Conversely, the Boks’ third-quarter resurgence showed what they can offer when precision, physicality, and composure align. Their forward pack impressed, but lineout frailties and sloppy handling in slippery conditions proved fatal. Team Changes: Building for Wellington In the aftermath, coach Rassie Erasmus has overhauled the lineup ahead of the rematch in Wellington. The new starting XV and bench aim to blend power, precision, and fresh energy. Starting XV : 15. Aphelele Fassi (fullback)14. Cheslin Kolbe (wing)13. Canan Moodie (outside centre)12. Damian Willemse (inside centre)11. Ethan Hooker (wing)10. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (fly-half)9. Cobus Reinach (scrum-half)8. Jasper Wiese (number eight, returning from suspension)7. Pieter-Steph du Toit (flanker)6. Siya Kolisi (blindside flanker & captain)5. Ruan Nortje (lock)4. Lood de Jager (lock, returns for lineout strength)3. Thomas du Toit (prop)2. Malcolm Marx (hooker)1. Andre Esterhuizen This reshuffle reflects Erasmus’s dual priorities: address the shortcomings seen in Auckland and continue building squad depth  amid long-term plans toward the 2027 World Cup . The Final Word Eden Park remains as elusive as ever, but Wellington offers South Africa a vital reset. The late scraps in Auckland revealed the team's gumption; now, the challenge is combining that resolve with clinical execution for a full 80-minute performance . The new-look side carries renewed energy, cohesion, and purpose. This Saturday, they have a chance not only to reclaim pride but also to step closer to Rugby Championship ambitions. • Caring for Your Potchefstroom Garden in the Spring and Summer Heat

Potchefstroom’s spring and summer months bring intense heat and strong sunshine, creating challenges for local gardens. On the hottest days, temperatures here can soar to around 37°C, and while summer rains provide relief, the intervals of harsh sun can quickly dry out lawns, vegetable patches, and flower beds. Image : Facebook Build It To help your garden thrive through Potch’s hot spring and summer, here are practical tips on watering, soil care, shading, and smart use of resources, including local products from Build It Potchefstroom - all tailored to our North West climate. Watering Schedules: When and How to Water Wisely Water early in the day:  Timing is everything. Plan to water during the cool early morning hours (around 4–6am), before the sun is high . This allows moisture to soak deeply into the soil before the day’s heat causes rapid evaporation. Early watering also helps prevent fungal issues that can arise if plants stay damp overnight . If mornings are not possible, late evening after sunset is second best but avoid wetting foliage at night to keep fungus at bay. Water deeply, but infrequently:  Instead of daily light sprinklings, give your lawn and garden a thorough, deep soak a couple of times per week. The “deep and infrequent” approach trains roots to grow deeper into the soil, making plants more drought-resistant . Aim to apply about 25 mm (2.5 cm)  of water per session (that’s roughly the amount needed to wet the soil to a depth of 20–30 cm) for lawns and flowerbeds . In practice, this might mean watering once or twice a week if there’s no rain. Deep watering encourages robust root systems so your grass and plants become “athletes” that withstand heat, rather than shallow-rooted “weaklings” prone to wilting . Image : Facebook Build It Adapt for lawns vs. veggies:  Lawns typically do well with a deep weekly watering, you can even measure 2–3 cm of water by placing a cup under your sprinkler. For vegetable gardens, check soil moisture more frequently; shallow-rooted veggies may need water 2–3 times a week, but still focus on deep soaking the root zone rather than surface spraying. Using a soaker hose or drip irrigation system in veggie beds is ideal, as it delivers water right to the roots without waste . Build It Potchefstroom stocks hoses, sprinklers and even basic drip irrigation kits to help you set up an efficient watering system , a smart move to ensure every drop counts in the summer heat. Conserve water with smart tech:  Consider investing in water-saving irrigation tools. Simple hose timers, drip lines, or spray nozzles with adjustable flow can cut down on water use by ensuring you only water as needed. In fact, modern smart irrigation systems (like drip systems with timers or rain sensors) can reduce water usage by up to 50% while keeping plants healthy . Also take advantage of any summer showers, set out a rain barrel or JoJo tank to collect rainwater which you can reuse on dry days. With Potchefstroom’s summer thunderstorms, a properly placed water tank can harvest hundreds of liters of free water for your garden. Conditioning Your Soil with Compost and Mulch Hot weather can wreak havoc on soil moisture. The key to resilience is improving your soil’s water-holding capacity and fertility: Add compost for healthy soil:  Work organic compost into your garden beds and even top-dress your lawn in spring. Compost enriches the soil with nutrients and improves its structure, helping sandy soils hold moisture and clay soils drain better . Healthier soil means roots can grow deeper and access water more readily, which is vital in hot conditions. You can pick up bags of quality compost or lawn dressing at Build It Potchefstroom to give your soil a boost . The store’s garden section carries rich potting soil and fertilizers too, so you can feed your flowers and veggies for strong growth . Just remember not to over-fertilize in peak heat, a slow-release fertiliser applied in early spring is gentler, letting compost do the work of feeding plants over time . Image : Facebook Build It Mulch to lock in moisture:  Mulch is your garden’s best friend in summer. A thick layer of organic mulch (such as bark chips, straw, dry grass clippings or even wood compost) spread on top of your soil acts like a protective blanket. It dramatically reduces evaporation , a 5–7 cm layer of mulch can cut water loss by up to 70% , and insulates the soil from extreme heat. By shading the soil, mulch keeps plant roots cooler and prevents the sun from baking the ground. It also suppresses weeds (which compete for water) and slowly adds organic matter to the soil as it breaks down. Spread mulch around the base of plants in flower beds and veggie gardens, being careful to keep it a few centimeters away from stems to avoid rot . For lawns, you can even leave finely cut grass clippings on the lawn (“grasscycling”) as a light mulch to retain moisture. And if you need mulch materials, Build It Potch often has bark chips or wood mulch in stock, as well as garden tools like rakes and wheelbarrows to help you apply it. Shade and Protect Your Plants from Scorching Sun When the African sun  beats down in mid-summer, providing some relief from direct sunlight can save your plants from heat stress. Potchefstroom enjoys over 12 hours of intense sunshine per summer day , and UV levels can be extreme , so thoughtful shading is a must. Use shade netting or cloth:  Erecting a simple shade cloth can drop the temperature for sun-sensitive plants by several degrees. Shade netting (available from local hardware suppliers) can be draped over veggie gardens or young flower beds during heatwaves. For example, a 40–50% shade cloth still lets through enough light for growth but protects tender leaves from scorching. Build It Potchefstroom can supply shade cloth by the meter - set it up on poles or a DIY frame over your vegetables like tomatoes, lettuce, and spinach to shield them during the harsh midday sun. Even a temporary structure with stakes and cloth during a heatwave can make the difference between wilting and thriving veggies. Remove or roll up the shade cloth in late afternoon to let plants enjoy cooler evening sun. Strategic planting for shade: Plan your garden layout to naturally protect more delicate plants. Group taller or bushy plants such as sunflowers or corn on the west/north side of lower-growing veggies so they provide a “living shade corridor” and break the force of the afternoon sun . Similarly, use trellised vines or climbers (like granadillas or climbing beans) to cast dappled shade on beds below. Over time, consider planting a hardy shade tree or two in your yard for long-term relief (just be mindful of root competition). In containers, simply move potted plants to a shaded patio or under an overhang during heatwaves , a little break from direct sun can prevent leaf scorch. Protect the lawn from extreme sun:  Grass loves sun, but in extreme heat your lawn can get patchy “burn” spots. If possible, provide occasional shade for lawn areas during peak sun – even a portable gazebo or market umbrella on the worst afternoons can help a prized patch of grass recover. More practically, keep your mower on a higher setting in summer so the grass blades are a bit taller . Taller grass shades its own roots and soil, keeping them cooler and more moist. For Kikuyu or other common grasses, aim for about 5–7 cm height in summer . Also avoid mowing in the heat of midday; cutting grass in cooler morning/evening hours is gentler on the turf. Choose Heat-Tolerant, Water-Wise Plants One of the best strategies for a low-maintenance summer garden is to grow plants suited to our climate . Indigenous and drought-tolerant species naturally withstand heat and need less water. Water-wise lawn and flowers:  If you are planting or re-seeding a lawn, opt for heat-resilient grass varieties like Kikuyu, Buffalo, or Bermuda grass, which are well adapted to South Africa’s hot summers . These grasses tolerate high temperatures and bounce back better from drought, reducing the risk of brown lawns. For flower beds, incorporate hardy perennials and natives. Many South African indigenous flowers and shrubs have evolved to thrive with minimal water . For example, aloes (with their fleshy, water-storing leaves) and succulents like Spekboom ( Portulacaria afra ) add beauty and greenery while shrugging off heat . Indigenous wildflowers such as Gazania or Pelargoniums (geraniums) deliver bright blooms and are built for our climate . These local heroes know how to make the most of every drop of water, and as a bonus, they often attract birds and butterflies to your garden . Hardy veggies and herbs:  Summer veggies that can handle heat include crops like cherry tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, squashes, sweet potatoes, and amaranth (tebbe spinach), which generally tolerate strong sun if kept watered. Plant herbs like rosemary, thyme, or oregano which love sun and dry conditions. Leafy greens and lettuce will need more coddling; try planting them in partial shade or under shade cloth to prevent bolting. Always check seed packets or nursery info for heat tolerance and consider planting a little earlier or later in the season for the most sensitive crops. Build It Potchefstroom often carries seasonal seeds and seedlings suited for the Potch climate , so you can ask their staff for recommendations on heat-tolerant varieties. By choosing resilient plants, you’ll spend less time watering and worrying, and more time enjoying a vibrant, hardy garden that withstands the summer sun. Image : Facebook Build It Eco-Friendly, Local Solutions for Garden Care Keeping your garden happy in the heat doesn’t mean you have to use tons of water or harmful chemicals. Potchefstroom gardeners can adopt eco-friendly practices and find what they need close to home. Mulching and composting are natural ways to conserve water and improve soil without chemical additives. Using a drip irrigation instead of a sprinkler, or a simple rain-harvesting tank, helps reuse and save water sustainably. Even fertilizing can be done the green way for instance, adding organic compost or manure improves soil gradually, and using organic fertilisers (like locally-made GuanoBoost or slow-release pellets) avoids the risk of “burning” plants in extreme heat. The good news is you can find all the supplies for these practices right here in town. • Helping Hands, Healing Hearts: Sanitary Pads and Toiletries Drive in Ikageng

Restoring Dignity Through Giving Many young girls in Ikageng face a heartbreaking challenge: missing school simply because they cannot afford sanitary pads or basic toiletries. This reality not only disrupts their education but also strips them of their dignity, confidence, and equal opportunity to learn. The Bophelo Ba Batho Community Group, through its Helping Hands, Healing Hearts  initiative, is stepping up to change this. With the support of kind-hearted donors, the group is running a Sanitary Pads and Toiletries Drive aimed at ensuring that no girl misses school due to lack of these essential items. Why This Matters Education is the key to breaking cycles of poverty, and for young girls, access to sanitary products is directly tied to their ability to attend school consistently. Missing classes every month because of period poverty puts them at a disadvantage, academically and socially. By donating sanitary pads and toiletries, community members can give these girls more than just products. They are giving them: Dignity: the ability to manage their personal hygiene with confidence. Confidence: the courage to participate fully in school and social activities. Opportunity: the chance to learn, grow, and pursue their dreams. How You Can Help Every donation makes a difference. For now, individuals are encouraged to give any sanitary pads or toiletries they can spare to their house parent. Collection boxes will soon be placed in accessible locations to make donating even easier. The campaign also provides a direct line for inquiries and contributions: 065 050 1246. Community Support This noble initiative is supported by Neste Homes, a local partner that embodies the values of being welcoming, safe, and cozy . Their involvement demonstrates the power of collaboration between community organizations and local businesses in driving positive change. A Call to Action The need is urgent, but so is the spirit of compassion that runs deep within the Ikageng community. By uniting under the banner of Helping Hands, Healing Hearts , every contribution, big or small, brings hope closer to the girls who need it most. Together, we can ensure that sanitary pads and toiletries are not a luxury, but a basic right for all young girls.

  • NWU Secure First Win with Hard-Fought 2–1 Victory Over CPUT

After a difficult start to the Varsity Women’s Football tournament, North-West University (NWU) bounced back in style, edging past Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) with a 2–1 win in Round 2. The match, played on 6 September 2025 at the UJ Soweto Stadium B-Field, showcased NWU’s resilience and determination to get their season back on track. Strong Start and Early Pressure Both teams opened with intensity, trading attacks in the opening stages. NWU created one of the first clear chances in the 10th minute when Veronicca Maswanganyi  struck a powerful free kick, but her effort sailed narrowly wide. The breakthrough arrived in the 23rd minute following NWU’s aggressive pressing. A misplaced CPUT pass deflected off Neo Montshosi , and Nontobeko Gumede  reacted quickly to finish from close range, giving the Eagles a deserved 1–0 lead. CPUT Fight Back CPUT were forced into an early setback when starting goalkeeper Nonhle Ngema  was substituted with an injury in the 25th minute, replaced by Cassidy Primo . Despite the disruption, the Cape side struck back before halftime. In the 38th minute, Mosetsanagape Leepile  produced a moment of brilliance with a long-range strike that caught NWU’s defence off guard, levelling the match at 1–1 going into the break. Second-Half Decider NWU began the second half with renewed urgency, creating multiple chances but failing to convert. Their persistence finally paid off in the 54th minute. From a well-worked throw-in, Tshiamo Gosiame Phiri  found space inside the box and calmly slotted the ball home, restoring NWU’s lead. The Eagles defended with composure in the closing stages, denying CPUT a way back into the contest and sealing their first three points of the campaign. • Planned Water Interruptions Affect Tigane and Khuma Communities

The Matlosana Local Municipality has issued critical notices to residents in Tigane and Khuma regarding water supply interruptions linked to maintenance and infrastructure repair. With service disruptions spanning early and mid-September, residents are urged to make advance preparations to minimize inconvenience. Tigane: Scheduled Maintenance on Pressure Tower Residents of Tigane will face a planned water supply interruption  from 10 to 12 September 2025 , as the municipality undertakes scheduled maintenance on the Tigane Pressure Tower . According to the municipality, full water supply restoration is expected on Saturday, 13 September 2025, at 06:00 am . The disruption will affect the entire Tigane area , impacting households, schools, and businesses dependent on a steady water flow. To cushion the impact, water tankers will be deployed  to provide temporary relief. However, officials have strongly advised residents to store enough water in advance  for essential daily use during the maintenance period. This scheduled intervention is part of ongoing efforts to ensure reliable water infrastructure and long-term service stability for Tigane’s growing population. Khuma: Faulty Pipeline Disruption On Friday, 5 September 2025 , residents of Khuma experienced water supply challenges due to a faulty air valve on the main pipeline . The technical fault affected several extensions, with communities in Khuma Ext 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7  reporting low water pressure or a complete lack of supply between 09:00 and 16:00 . The municipality dispatched teams to conduct urgent repair work on the pipeline. To provide relief during the outage, water tankers were made available  at strategic points. While services have since been restored, officials acknowledged the disruption’s impact on households and businesses that rely heavily on uninterrupted water access. Ensuring Long-Term Water Security Both interruptions, planned and unplanned, highlight the fragile balance between infrastructure maintenance  and service delivery demands  in Matlosana. Municipal officials emphasized the need for patience and cooperation, assuring residents that upgrades and repairs are essential to reduce recurring breakdowns. With Tigane residents now preparing for several days without tap water, and Khuma residents still recovering from their recent disruption, the municipality reiterated its apology for the inconvenience and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring reliable, sustainable water supply systems  in the long term. #TheGoToGuy #Klerksdorp #WaterSupplyUpdate #InfrastructureMaintenance #MatlosanaCommunity #ServiceDelivery 💧🛠️🚰🤝

  • French Firepower Overwhelms Bok Women as Quarter-Final Awaits

On Sunday, September 7, 2025, the Springbok Women encountered their toughest challenge yet in the Women’s Rugby World Cup. Facing a well-drilled and physical French side at Franklin’s Gardens in Northampton, South Africa were outclassed 57–10 in their final Pool D clash. The defeat, though heavy, does not end their campaign. Instead, it sets up a historic quarter-final showdown against defending champions New Zealand at Sandy Park in Exeter on Saturday, September 13. First-Half Struggles From the opening whistle, France imposed their dominance. Their mixture of power in the forwards and precision in the backline proved too much for the Springbok Women to contain. Four tries in the first half put South Africa firmly on the back foot, and with France clinical at converting territory into points, the contest was essentially decided before the break. The Boks’ situation worsened when centre Chumisa Qawe  received a 20-minute red card. Although South Africa eventually returned to full strength, the absence had already tilted momentum even further toward France. By halftime, the gap between the two sides reflected both French efficiency and South African struggles to hold possession. Second-Half Dominance by France If the first 40 minutes were punishing, the second half brought little respite. France added five more tries, showcasing their speed, accuracy, and ruthless finishing ability. South Africa’s attempts to counterattack were repeatedly broken down by unforced errors and turnovers. Still, the Bok Women refused to capitulate. In the closing moments, Nadine Roos , who had been South Africa’s standout performer throughout the contest, found space and sprinted clear to dot down under the posts. The try was symbolic of the team’s spirit, wounded but not defeated, and it ensured the Boks left Northampton with at least one bright note to carry forward. Coach’s Perspective: Learning Through Pain Head coach Swys de Bruin  was candid in his post-match reflections. “France played very well today and we did not,” he admitted, noting the gulf in quality between world number four France and his side. He emphasized, however, that the heavy defeat had to be viewed in perspective. De Bruin revealed that South Africa had rested nine frontline players  for the clash, prioritizing freshness for the quarter-final against New Zealand. The result, he argued, was twofold: a chance to keep key players ready for the knockouts, and an invaluable, if painful, exposure for nine others to the intensity of World Cup rugby. “There are positives though,” De Bruin insisted. “Today also exposed players to the harsh realities of what World Cups are all about. One can look at that as an investment into the future.” Identifying the Gaps The coach highlighted areas that will demand urgent attention before facing the Black Ferns. Foremost was the scrum and set-piece battle , where France’s pack dictated terms. In addition, South Africa’s inability to protect their own ball gifted France opportunities to pile on points. “The red card did not help,” De Bruin admitted, “but the real difference lay in France’s ability to capitalize on every chance. That kind of clinical play is what separates the world’s top four sides from the chasing pack.” Looking Ahead: The Black Ferns Challenge While acknowledging the disappointment, the Bok Women are already shifting focus to their quarter-final encounter. Their opponents, New Zealand, have looked formidable, sealing their pool campaign with a 40–0 victory over Ireland . De Bruin stressed respect for the reigning champions but pointed to lessons learned from last month’s clash in Cape Town against a New Zealand ‘next best’ side. That experience, he believes, provides a measure of preparation. Fighting Spirit Remains Even amid defeat, one constant shines through for the Springbok Women: their refusal to surrender. The late try against France encapsulated their resilience, and their journey to the quarter-finals, a first in the team’s history , is proof of steady progress. Their training week in Exeter will focus on tactical discipline, mental strength, and maximizing the energy of rested senior players. For a squad striving to narrow the gap with the world’s elite, the quarter-final against New Zealand represents both a daunting challenge and a golden opportunity. Final Word The Springbok Women’s defeat to France underscored the scale of the task that still lies ahead. Yet, in reaching the quarter-finals, they have already broken new ground. As they prepare to face the Black Ferns, the Boks will rely on the grit that carried them this far, while drawing on the lessons from Northampton. Whether they advance further or not, their presence in the last eight is a step forward for women’s rugby in South Africa, a moment of pride, reflection, and possibility.
