It’s an organised but warm space where ideas are welcomed, and every contribution counts. Volunteers often help with: Packing donations before the event Setting up the tables and food stations Welcoming people as they arrive Explaining how the line works and guiding recipients Distributing meals, hygiene packs, and clothing Cleaning up and debriefing afterwards What to Expect on the Day When you arrive at the Vat Verniet Tafel event, you’ll be greeted by a welcoming team. Everyone gets involved with simple tasks and guidance is always available. The environment is warm and respectful. Volunteers work side-by-side to ensure every visitor leaves with something they need, and more importantly, with their dignity intact. There’s no judgment. No red tape. Sitting down with Paula Aucamp, Ciska Kruger, and Caitlyn Snyman , we uncovered the stories of school spirit, teamwork, and hidden talents that make ML Fick a beacon in Potch. From cultural activities to leadership initiatives, the conversation reminded us just how much energy and pride flows through the corridors of ML Fick. It’s not just about academics,it’s about creating a balanced space where learners thrive in every aspect of life. SportStroom 13 August - De Wet Grobler   Wednesday belonged to sport, and what better way than with our SportStroom spotlight on De Wet Grobler ? This Potch Gimmies 1st team player is not only making waves as an U/17 provincial star, but also balancing leadership roles at school and in the hostel. Hearing De Wet talk about his journey was nothing short of inspiring. He spoke about discipline, ambition, and the balance it takes to be both a top athlete and a respected leader. His path forward looks bright, and it’s clear Potchefstroom will be cheering him on every step of the way. Ikageng 15 August - Ikageng Nightlife – Bonang Royal Venue   Friday nights in Ikageng officially hit a new level at Bonang Royal Venue . Music, people, and energy collided in a space buzzing with life. Whether you went to dance, to meet friends, or just to soak in the vibe, it was one for the books. 16 August - Ikageng Street Culture   Saturday brought rhythm and energy to Ikageng as the basketball court became a stage . Street dance battles collided with the electric vibe of Black Saturday, and the result? Pure adrenaline. Music pumping, sneakers squeaking, and dancers giving it their all, it was a showcase of raw talent and community passion. Ikageng once again reminded us that culture doesn’t only live in theatres and halls; sometimes, it’s right there in the streets, under open skies. Our Eyes in The Field 12 August - Julia’s Restaurant Potch foodies, this one’s for you. On 12 August, we visited Julia’s Restaurant ,a little slice of Italy right in the heart of Potchefstroom. From creamy risotto to woodfired pizza and fresh handmade pasta, Julia’s is serving up experiences as much as meals. And don’t forget the drinks! Imported coffee beans and authentic Italian liqueurs round off the experience, making each visit feel like a mini European getaway. If you haven’t yet, make sure you drop by between Monday and Saturday, from lunchtime to late. 13 August - Environmental Alarm in Potch  - We couldn’t ignore the urgent issue affecting our beloved Mooi River . A sewage pipe has been spilling directly into the river for months, wreaking havoc on the ecosystem. This was reported to JB Marks Municipality as far back as 2024, but no action has been taken. The fish, plants, and future of the river are at stake. Potch, this is our call to raise our voices - our river deserves better! 13 August - Potch Gets Ready for Geesfees 2025  - On a more upbeat note, we sat down with Elbé  to talk about what’s in store for this year’s Geesfees . If you thought past festivals were big, 2025 is set to be MASSIVE. Think music, food, culture, and a chance to celebrate everything that makes Potch unique. Save the date,you don’t want to miss the heart of the town beating at full volume. 15 August - Pick n Pay Canal Crossing – Trolley Dash   The ever-popular Trolley Dash had another round of winners, and as always, it was pure chaos in the best way. Participants had just seconds to dash through the aisles and grab as much as they could,every item adding to the excitement. If you missed it, don’t worry. The next one is just around the corner, but you’ll want to make sure your entry slip is in that box! 15 August - Abraham Kriel Kinderhuis Goes Solar Perhaps the most heartwarming story of the day: thanks to Green & You , the Abraham Kriel Kinderhuis installed new solar panels. This isn’t just about saving on electricity, it’s about giving the kids a reliable source of light and warmth, even during load shedding. A small step toward sustainability, but a massive step in creating a safe and hopeful future for children who need it most. 17 August – Community Highlight We ended the week on a reflective note with a powerful video shared across social media (see link above). Whether it was about community upliftment, local pride, or simply a reminder of what connects us, the stories we tell and share online continue to spark conversations and inspire change. Looking Back at Week 33 From school pride at ML Fick to the fiery dance battles in Ikageng, from celebrating sport to exposing environmental issues, and from Italian flavours to solar-powered hope, Week 33 was a whirlwind of contrasts. It showed us that Potchefstroom and Ikageng are towns where joy, resilience, creativity, and responsibility all exist side by side. Die wedstryd is gekenmerk deur kragtige verdediging, kreatiewe spelpatrone en spanwerk wat keer op keer die teenstanders oorrompel het. Die seuns se fokus en vasberadenheid het duidelik gewys dat hulle gereed is vir die groot uitdaging wat voorlê. Afgetrede spelers, ouers en ondersteuners het die pawiljoen laat dreun met gejuig en die spelers se trots in die skoolkleure was tasbaar. Hierdie finaal beloof om ’n hoogtepunt van die seisoen te wees. O/14-span: Jong talent wat trots maak Die O/14-rugbyspan het ook ’n merkwaardige prestasie behaal deur tot in die semi-finaal van die Noordvaal, Groep 4, deur te dring. Ongelukkig het hulle in hul wedstryd teen Hoërskool Parys vasgeval, maar hul vasberadenheid en geesdrif deur die hele seisoen is niks minder as inspirerend nie. Hierdie jong span het ’n stewige fondament gelê en bewys dat hulle oor die potensiaal beskik om in die komende jare groot dinge te bereik. Ondersteuners kan uitsien na nog vele oorwinnings van hierdie talentvolle groep. Beide die seuns- en dogterspanne het hul groepwedstryde onoorwonne afgesluit en bo-aan hul groepe geëindig. Hierdie prestasie het beteken dat albei spanne deurdring het na die uitspeelrondes vir posisie 1–4, ’n bewys van hul konstante spel en vasberadenheid. Vrydag – Uitspeelrondes Seunspan: Ons Tokkie-seuns het in die semi-finaal teen Laerskool Saamtrek te staan gekom. Met uitstekende samewerking en taktiese spel kon hulle die wedstryd wen en sodoende deurdring na die finaal. Daar het hulle Hennopspark die stryd aangesê – en met vasberadenheid en ywer is die kampioenstitel  vir 2025 ingepalm! 🏆 Dogterspan: Ons dogters het ongelukkig in die semi-finaal ook teen Saamtrek te staan gekom, waar die wedstryd nie in hul guns verloop het nie. Hierdie wen het aan hulle die derde plek in die kompetisie besorg , ’n prestasie om op trots te wees. Reserwe-toernooi 🌟 Die Tokkie-reserwes het ook nie agtergebly nie. Hulle het aan die reserwe-toernooi deelgeneem en uitstekende resultate behaal: Div Kroon  het die kampioenstitel  in die reserwe-afdeling verower. Suné Enslin  het briljant gespeel en die derde plek  behaal. Hierdie prestasies wys dat die diepte van talent by Mooirivier sterk is en dat selfs ons reserwes ’n groot rol speel in die sukses van die skool se tennisprogram. Gesamentlike Trofee 🥇 As hoogtepunt van die week is dit bekendgemaak dat Mooirivier, saam met Hennopspark en Saamtrek, die gesamentlike eerste plek in die algehele ranglys van die kompetisie behaal het. Dit is ’n buitengewone prestasie wat die span se harde werk, goeie voorbereiding en die ondersteuning van hul afrigters en ouers weerspieël. The Build-Up: Donations and Anticipation In the days leading up to Saturday, 16 August 2025 , the offices of Mooirivier Beskerming no longer looked like offices at all. Boxes, bags and crates of donated goods filled every corner, visible proof of a community opening its heart. Image: Vat Verniet Tafel On Friday, 15 August , organisers expressed gratitude to generous contributors like Pieter Bester  and Okkie van der Westhuizen , who delivered large quantities of canned food, rice, cooldrinks and other essentials. The sense of expectation was palpable: neighbours knew something meaningful was about to unfold. Image: Vat Verniet Tafel The Big Day: Love in Action By early morning on Saturday, queues had already begun to form outside Mooirivier Beskerming. Families, young and old, waited patiently, and before long the street filled with people. Volunteers in bright spirits welcomed them, directing some to clothing rails, others to the food tables, and many to simple conversations of encouragement. There was more stock to distribute - clothing, shoes, toiletries, children’s toys, and Bibles in different languages and there were more hands to help . Volunteers poured their energy into ensuring the day ran smoothly, often working tirelessly without pause. Then came a rainbow arching over the scene, a striking reminder, organisers said, “ dat God self by ons is .” Image: Vat Verniet Tafel Tangible Impact The generosity translated into thousands of small but life-changing moments: A mother carrying home a bag of food staples. A child hugging a soft toy that once belonged to another family. Someone receiving their first Bible . And many leaving with not only full bags but also a warm, home-cooked meal  and the dignity of being cared for. Image: Vat Verniet Tafel “Toiletries like shampoo and soap may seem ordinary,” one volunteer noted, “but to someone who hasn’t had access for months, it’s priceless.” Words of Thanks Organisers extended heartfelt thanks to every volunteer: “As dit nie vir julle was nie, sou die Vat Verniet Tafel nooit kon gebeur het nie. Julle is die hande en voete wat die liefde sigbaar gemaak het.” Community supporters like The Go-To Guy  also celebrated the project’s journey from a single idea to a movement of visible impact, affirming: “Baie bly om hierdie projek van daai eerste boodskappie te sien tot waar dit nou is… dit gaan nog baie groei.” To this, the organisers warmly replied: “The Go-To Guy baie dankie, en dankie oom vir die hulp met die bewusmaking van die projek van julle kant af.” Image: Vat Verniet Tafel Looking Ahead The Vat Verniet Tafel is no longer just an event; it has become a Potchefstroom tradition of compassion . Thursday evening, 14 August 2025 , saw the NWU Eagles take to the field at the NWU Soccer Institute Stadium  for a high-energy Varsity Football showdown against the Central University of Technology (CUT). Backed by a passionate home crowd, the Eagles produced a disciplined and determined performance, sealing a narrow but crucial 1–0 victory . First Half: Balanced but Goalless ⚽ The opening half was tightly contested, with both teams creating opportunities but failing to find the net. The Eagles pressed high and looked to dominate possession, while CUT relied on quick counterattacks to test the NWU defense. Despite the intensity, the match remained deadlocked at 0–0  heading into the break. Second Half: Eagles Break Through 🦅 Just minutes after the restart, Eagles captain Aphelele Sibisi  rose to the occasion with a decisive strike that broke the deadlock and electrified the stadium. The goal shifted momentum firmly in NWU’s favour, forcing CUT to chase the game. Despite heavy pressure from CUT in the closing stages, the Eagles defense held strong, ensuring the lone goal was enough to secure all three points. Star Performers 🌟 While Sibisi’s leadership and match-winning goal stood out, it was Momelezi Mngati  who earned Player of the Match  honours. His tireless energy, creative link-up play, and commanding presence kept NWU on the front foot throughout the contest.
