Die kollig val vandag op nog ‘n plaaslike band - Hêppie Kêppie. Hendrik Coetzee is ‘n Potchefstromer en Werner Müller is tans in Manchester; maar tegnologie is ‘n fantastiese ding wat báie brûe oorskry.  Foto (verskaf): Hêppie Kêppie Die begin van ‘n hegte band Hendrik Coetzee en Werner Müller het in 2018 tydens sêr oudisies ontmoet en hulle stemme het mekaar goed gekomplimenteer. Met Werner as tenoor en Hendrik as bariton het hulle saam begin jam en besef dat hiérdie ‘n unieke klank is. Werner noem dat dit aan die begin uitdagend was om saam met iemand anders kitaar te speel, want dit was nog net altyd hy alleen - wat nog te praat van voor mense op te tree; dít was ‘n nuutjie vir hulle altwee. Gelukkig is Hendrik baie musikaal aanpasbaar en het maklik by Werner en sy ritme ingeval en hoe meer hul saam kitaar gespeel het, hoe meer het hul selfvertroue gegroei. Dit was nie tot en met 2022, terwyl hul kamermaats was, dat hulle besluit het om ‘n twee-man band te vorm en hul unieke klank met die sosiale sfeer te deel. Maar voordat hulle enigiets op Instagram geplaas het, het hulle ‘n naam benodig.  “Kry vir jou ‘n hêppie kêppie!”  Werner en van sy vriende was in Suid Korea so paar jaar gelede en gedurende ‘n aand uit, het iemand op hulle geskree. Een van die vriende het gedink dat dié man baie knorrig is en skree toe vir die einste knorpot: “Kry vir jou ‘n hêppie kêppie!”. En sedertien hy daardie storie gehoor het, het die woorde by Hendrik vasgesteek, “ek het gedink dit kan ‘n goeie band naam wees”. Hulle kry toe vir hul elkeen ‘n kleurvolle keppie, plaas hul eerste liedjie op Instagram en so is Hêppie Kêppie gebore. Alhoewel Werner deesdae in Manchester woon, verteenwoordig hy steeds Hêppie Kêppie en maak dié twee vriende steeds tyd om videos te maak en liedjies op te neem.  Musikale agtergrond en invloede  Werner het in 2015 deel van die PUK Koor gevorm, waar hy vir drie jaar deel was daarvan en het homself intussen leer kitaar speel. Hendrik, aan die ander kant, het op 13-jarige ouderdom begin kitaar speel en het in graad 10 Musiek as ‘n vak gekies. "Wanneer jy Musiek as vak het, hoef jy nie noodwendig te kan sing nie, maar jy moet ten minste ‘n noot kan hou." Sêr het vir Hendrik eintlik leer sing, asook hoe om te harmoniseer en ander stemme rondom jou te komplimenteer. John Mayer het as Werner se musikale inspirasie gedien en Hendrik het weer aanklank gevind by die Red Hot Chilli Peppers - en verbasend genoeg, komplimenteer hierdie twee uiteenlopende genres mekaar baie goed. Foto (verskaf): Werner en Hendrik Om in kerk bands te speel en om aan verskeie optredes deel te neem, soos by Snowflake of Potch Unplugged, is ook ervarings wat hierdie manne se stemme en klank vorm en beïnvloed - hoe meer jy optree en sing, hoe meer vind jy jou unieke stem.  'n Diverse musiekstyl “Ons het ‘n baie diverse musiekstyl”, het Werner genoem. Die vriende beskryf dit as alternatiewe, Indie en rock musiek, maar ook ligte, background music tot ‘n mate. Soos baie ander plaaslike groepe, is hulle hoof fokus op akoesties. Natuurlik inkorporeer hulle hul eie style en persoonlikhede by die vertonings in. “Jy leer naderhand hoe om ‘n gehoor te lees. Wanneer jy by ‘n mark optree, speel jy dalk ligte pop musiek of country, maar in ‘n lawaaierige kroeg sal jy ‘harder’, rock liedjies speel van plaaslike kunstenaars en bands soos FPK.   Grootste musikale inspirasies en invloede Werner se grootste musikale inspirasie is groot name soos Eric Clapton, George Ezra en John Mayer. “Alhoewel ek nie soos hulle kan speel nie, geniet ek hulle musiekstyl baie.” Hendrik is meer ‘old school’ en is gaande oor groepe soos Led Zeppelin en Dire Straits. Die twee manne kry hul gesamentlike inspirasie ook by kunstenaars soos Fleetwood Mac, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Guns ‘n Roses, Bob Dylan, Spoegwolf, Francois van Coke, Bok van Blerk en Rainbow Kitten Surprise.  Die kuns om liedjies te skryf “Jy kry ‘n lekker tune en dan begin jy woorde kry wat daarby pas en bou daarvolgens ‘n storie. In die meeste gevalle is die liedjie baseer op iets wat gebeur het, jy vul net die blanks in.” Soos enige kreatiewe persoon, is daar dae wat Hendrik baie inspirasie het, maar daar is ook dae waar jou brein net suf is en nie ‘n enkele gedagte kom by jou op nie. Werner is ook besig om sy kreatiewe tenk te vul en werk deurentyd aan sy skryf vermoë. Sommige dae kom die klanke eerste en ander dae kom die woorde eerste - jy moet aanhou om jou kreatiwiteit te ‘oefen’ en in daardie headspace probeer bly. Werner en Hendrik is ‘n gekombineerde balans wat wérk. Merkwaardige optredes en pre-show ritueel Die Dromersmark optrede in Julie 2023 is een van Werner se gunsteling optredes tot op hede. Die kwaliteit van die klank was fantasties en hy het dit baie geniet om daar te sing en met die gehoor te connect. Die Foo Fighters vat elkeen ‘n sluk Jägermeister terwyl hulle Michael Jackson se liedjie, Off The Wall , luister, terwyl Keith Richards van The Rolling Stones weier om op die verhoog te gaan, tensy hy ‘n herderspastei geëet het. Net so het hiérdie duo ook ‘n pre-show ‘ritueel’ - op pad na elke vertoning luister hul musiek en sing saam met die radio en in gevalle waar die senuwees erg knaag, sal hul elkeen ‘n knertsie tequilla neem. Wanneer daar moeilike dae is, moet jy jou hêppie kêppie opsit, dankbaar wees oor die geleenthede en fokus op die goeie dinge. Lewe met ‘n oop hart - laat die slegte tye wéés en voel wat jy voel, maar leer daaruit en lig jou ken.” Tydens hul optredes probeer hul ‘n goeie gevoel (deur hul verhoog teenwoordigheid) oordra en om moontlike swaar gemoedere te lig.  Grootste uitdaging wat julle al ervaar het en hoe het julle dit oorkom? Die grootste uitdaging tans is sekerlik om ‘by mekaar uit te kom’ via video opnames, veral met Werner in die buiteland. Buiten dit, is die grootste hekkie om deurentyd nuwe materiaal te skep en uit te staan tussen jou mededingers. “Dit is ‘n moeilike industrie om in te wees”, vertel Hendrik. Dit is nie maklik om ‘n naam vir jouself of jou groep te maak in vandag se bedryf nie. Maar deur al die struikelblokke, is die deursettingsvermoë en dryf steeds daar - hulle gryp elke geleentheid aan.  Watter prestasie is julle die trotsste op? Die feit dat hulle ‘n groep gevorm het en goed doen tydens optredes is vir Werner persoonlik ‘n groot prestasie. Hendrik het die groep alleen verteenwoordig en het homself verbaas toe hy tweede plek behaal het tydens 2023 se Potch Unplugged kompetisie wat jaarliks by deMilko gehou word. Die plekke waar hulle al opgetree het, dra ook by tot die trots van hul band. Werner behoort binne die volgende maand of twee sy eerste gig in Manchester te doen, waar hy dan op sy beurt Hêppie Kêppie gaan verteenwoordig. Foto (Instagram): Hendrik tydens 2023 Potch Unplugged Kompetisie Plaaslike kunstenaars Die voordeel wat plaaslike kunstenaars het, is die feit dat hulle weet wie in die ‘music scene’ is - en dit is gewoonlik individue of bands waarvan die plaaslike gemeenskap nog nie eens gehoor het nie. Beide manne sal graag die verhoog met Red Wine Acoustics wil deel in die toekoms en Hendrik het genoem dat hy graag saam met Glen, PB Laas en Die Piesangskille sal wil optree. “Eintlik enigiemand wat ‘n visie en droom het vir Potch en die behoefte het om Potch weer op die map te kry” [in terme van musiek en kuns].  Uitdagings in die plaaslike musiekbedryf Soos so baie dinge regoor die land, is finansies ‘n groot uitdaging en veral in die [plaaslike] musiekbedryf. Potchefstroom is ‘n baie kultuur-ryke dorp en baie mense het so baie om te wys en met die gemeenskap te deel. Meer publisiteit en bemarking is nodig om hiérdie talente ten toon te stel, “skep groter platforms vir plaaslike kunstenaars, kry KykNet betrokke of doen ‘n reality show oor musiek in Potch”, was die voorstel. Word-of-mouth bemarking bereik ook net soveel ore. Hendrik noem dat een van die 2024 doelwitte is om aan te hou musiek skryf, nuwe musiek uit te bring en meer ‘aanlyn optredes’ te hou. Hy wil ook so veel as moontlik gigs doen hierdie jaar, hetsy dit plaaslik of elders is. Hulle wil ‘n stabiele platform skep, so bietjie aandag skenk aan hulle hoedjie handelsmerk en hoe om dit te groei, asook om die Potch music scene aan die gang te hou. Vyf-jaar plan Oor vyf jaar wil hierdie duo kan terugkyk op hul musikale pad en wéét dat hulle nie opgegee het nie; dat hulle deur die moeilike tye gestoei het, maar steeds aan die anderkant uitgekom het. “Ek wil eendag in die ouetehuis sit en musiek maak”, het Hendrik glimlaggend vertel. Vir Hêppie Kêppie self wil hul graag ‘n gevestigde handelsmerk wees, ‘n mark in die ‘hoedjie industrie’ hê en hoop dat hulle naam intussen by die regte ore uitkom sodat hul horison verder as Noordwes strek. Inspirasie stasie Vir Hendrik persoonlik, word hy inspireer deur sy familie, sport en sy geloof. Verder motiveer die gedagte om ‘n goeie man te wees, om te kan voorsien en om vir iets en iemand te kan baklei (op ‘n goeie manier) hom. Asook enigiets wat Suid-Afrika connect of unite - selfs deur die sleg wat in die land aangaan, dit motiveer jou om 'n verskil te maak. “Suid-Afrika is ‘n ander tipe land en daar kan ‘n helder toekoms vir die land wees”, het Hendrik hoopvol vertel. Vir Werner is dit sy ouers wat hom inspireer, “hulle moedig my aan om iets te doen waarvan ek hou, maak nie saak wat dit is nie.” Drome en doelwitte Hiérdie manne droom groot en een doelwit wat hul het, is om lewens te beïnvloed deur hulle musiek. Hulle wil hê hulle musiek moet verskillende rasse en kulture bymekaar bring en bewys dat jy ‘n goeie tyd saam kan geniet ten spyte van verskillende agtergronde.  Gunsteling kunstenaars en musiek op die oomblik? “Dis soos om te vra wie jou gunsteling kind is”, het Hendrik laggend gesê. As dit goeie musiek is, kan jy verseker wees dat dit op sy speellys is. Dit sluit in Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Fleetwood Mac, Rainbow Kitten Surprise en Francois van Coke; selfs Mozart en Metallica. Sy gunsteling liedjie is Stairway to Heaven van Led Zeppelin. Werner het ook genoem dat dit moeilik is om ‘n gunsteling kunstenaar te kies, “maar vir die maand is dit sover Noah Kahan”.  'n Moet-luister liedjie as 'n first time luisteraar Hulle het al so baie liedjies gedoen, maar ‘n paar goeie covers sluit in Follow the Sun van Xavier Rudd, What’s Up van Four Non Blondes en Riptide van Vance Joy. ‘n Liedjie wat vir Hendrik uitstaan is ‘n mash-up van Aloe Blacc se liedjie, I need a dollar. Werner sekondeer laasgenoemde en stel voor dat luisteraars I need a dollar gaan luister, want “ek dink die meeste mense soek ‘n randjie of twee.” Hierdie is ook net ‘n paar van die liedjies waarna die gehore kan uitsien tydens hulle optredes - hetsy alleen of saam. This creature is none other than the Saddle - Billed Stork, a bird that not only captivates with its sheer size but also dazzles with its vibrant colors. As we embark on this journey to uncover the secrets of this magnificent bird, let's delve into the life of the Saddle - Billed Stork, a true gem of sub - Saharan Africa.
